When we first moved to this area a few years ago, Joe's was our go to after a day swimming and catching sun out on City Beach. It's roughly walking distance from the beach (maybe a brisk quarter mile or so from the sand), and is THE best kept secret in downtown Sandpoint. This place defines "hole in the wall" restaurant, and even if you're on foot, if you blink at the wrong moment, you'd likely miss it. Don't do that. This place is excellent. I've never been to Philadelphia, so I can't say with any accuracy or certainty how Joe's sandwiches hold up to the real deals, but I will say that the sandwiches and their burgers are indeed the Real Deal. Their sandwiches come in 8" and 12" lengths and burgers from 1-2 quarter pound patties. They have a fairly standard soda fountain equipped with Pepsi product, a few bottled beverages, and a mindblowing milk shake menu. A few years ago they even offered a buffalo sauce flavored milk shake. Full stop. Anyway, I can attest that their huckleberry shake and Hershey's chocolate malt are out of this world awesome. My wife and I went here for date night last night, our first time in in quite some time. Service was very friendly and attentive, and everything was made to order. Whereas I've usually gone for the Philly cheese steak or French dip, this time I did the bacon burger with pepper jack (they have a good variety of cheese available, I should add) and left with zero regrets. My wife did the standard cheeseburger with everything and we split a side of onion rings which were ambrosial (delicious, amazing, what have you). Parking can be a little iffy, but there are some spots on the street right out front. Worst case scenario, they're a very short walking distance from the big (free) public parking lot on Church street, which is where I parked. You might even need the walk if you're eating there. Inside seating is limited, but clean and comfortable. The AC wasn't the greatest, and I can't imagine the heat from the kitchen does the interior temps any favors. My wife and I rarely if ever get a date night anymore, so the whole thing was a great treat, and something I'd gladly do again anytime. Highly, highly recommended. read more

If you enjoy a good Philly Cheesesteak please stop by. Plus there is an 85 year old woman that was working the counter. She made my day chatting with her. What a wonderful woman. Enjoyed my whole dine in experience with her. I hugged her when I left. Hope she did enjoy her dip in the lake that day. Thank you for the Philly Cheesesteak! Love the onion rings too! read more

While visiting Sandpoint, my boyfriend and I decided to try Joe's as he is a big Philly Cheesesteak fan and is always on the search for the next best sandwich. This shop is located in downtown Sandpoint, just off of the main street. There are a few tables inside, however it seems like most people opt for grab and go. We were greeted by a friendly server and grabbed a table after placing our order at the counter. There were quite a few to-go orders ahead of us, so there was a bit of a wait, but nothing unreasonable. The server brought our food to the table and we dug in as we were starving. The highlight was definitely the garlic fries, they were crisp and had a hearty amount of garlic- delicious! I had the 8 inch turkey sandwich and it was good, nothing mind blowing but definitely a good amount of turkey and veggies. My boyfriend was unfortunately disappointed with the cheesesteak as he felt it was really small and lacked flavor. That's just his personal opinion, however. Each sandwich came with a Dove chocolate in the basket, which was a cute touch. I love to support and to see local restaurants thrive, so it's worth trying Joe's for yourself if in the area. read more

Food was absolutely amazing, we had two really picky eaters and both raved about the food. Honestly the best cheesesteak sandwich I've had, I wasn't the only one who thought that in our group! Very over priced and misleading. Menu prices online don't reflect the real price in the store. Very misleading. Not worth it! read more

Great service and fantastic food. Every time I am in town I swing by for a Philly and they never disappoint.

Their sandwiches are very mediocre and extremely overpriced. After we spent $60 with a great tip by the way, we took our food to go and realized she didn't give us one of our fries. Instead of apologizing and quickly getting the fries, she asked for our receipt and took a full minute scanning the receipt to see if we were lying or not and she never apologized. We had to wait 10 full mins for the fries. Our other food was cold by the time we got them. We've never been back since. I do not recommend this place. read more

Owners / Staff are rude and insulting. Food was overpriced and small portions. It's a small town place that used to be good, but has really gone down the drain. read more

out of date info. regular cheesesteak + sweet potato fries was close to 30$... okay quality, not much customer service

Found this cute little cheesesteak joint while driving around town looking for something to eat and man this place was so delicious. There are 3 tables in this place but the staff were awesome, super nice and cheerful. This place is a must try, get the 12in though we definitely wished we did. Also even though it's made to order it didn't take very long for our food to come out. We will be going back a few times before we leave town we have more things to try. read more

Just Alright cheese steaks.. was not blown away.. at all.. not sure what everyone is raving on and on about... Very, Very, very pricey!! My girlfriend & I were downtown and hadn't seen each other in awhile and so we met up for lunch and ended up eating here... if that's what u call it... lol.. .... we couldn't even afford our own sandwiches.. given, we are college age, broke young adults, but cmon... we had to share a cheese steak sammy, the peppers on the samich cost EXTRA... like a lot extra.. I mean that shiat should come on there already... Shared 1large fry, 2 large drinks...soda...& it came to $41 and something... I miss JOE... The Original Owner from PHILADELPHIA... MAN OH MAN - Now... He could make a MEAN PHILLY.... Now some older couple owns it... and they are like the third ones since Joe owned it.. so yeah.. they should have just burnt the place down when he left.. . .or AT least call it by another name. . Cuz it ain't Joe from Phillys shop no more :'( REST IN PEACE read more

Really fantastic place. Recently moved to Washington and I brought my husband here who's from Philly, and he was so happy. Best cheesesteak he's had since we've moved to the west coast. Absolutely delicious and the woman at the counter was so nice and friendly, asking us all the right questions for the best cheesesteaks. I would 100% return. Great place all around. read more

Great Phillys, better they the ones I just had IN Philadelphia this Summer! Also love their chili and hot dogs! Friendly and fast service. Feels like I'm in Chicago at one of their Chicago Dog places! It's small and decorated just like you'd see in Philly or Chicago. read more

LJ and Scott are so welcoming and it feels like I'm getting a home cooked Philly cheese steak when I get from them. A+! Horse radish is super tasty but hot! I enjoyed the experience, but my fiance didn't kiss me for a day and a half. Said it was coming out of my pores, hahaa! Try this place out, it's real good. The original and the buffalo chicken Philly are the one's I've tried. read more

Being from Kansas City (barbecue heaven), my expectations of barbecue outside of KC are pretty rigid. This guy could compete head on with the best of them. Had the pulled pork sandwich which was nothing short of amazing. Wife had cheeseburger which she bragged about as well. The entire menu is priced Right and environment is very family friendly. Also, the sweet potato fries were cooked just right and not overly salty. High recommendation. read more

They have really good sandwiches and they help out the community in a lot of ways and for that I give them a five star review great job guys keep up the good work read more

So I think Yelpers have it right, 4.5 Stars. First off lovely little place reminiscent of a mom-and-pop shop in any big city in America. 4 tables, girl behind the bar and the guy who's name is on the door cooking in the back and if you're walking too fast, you will totally blow right past the front door. Menu was a tad confusing, and although other reviews tout their Chicago hot dogs, they don't actually have Vienna dogs. But what I came for was the philly cheesesteak, and that didn't disappoint. And they even had Whiz! The mouthfeel on the bread was excellent, just spongy enough to soak up the juice but not chewy. The sandwich was a well-proportioned ratio of meat to cheese to onions peppers and mushrooms. No stringy fat, good hearty portion size. The only thing it said it was missing was just a little bit of the grease that you find in a typical Philly cheesesteak. But it was still a very very good cheesesteak. I would gladly come back. read more

From a native Philadelphian (born and raised in the suburbs of Northeast Philly), these are legit Philly cheesesteaks! We were visiting friends who moved to Sandpoint and they wanted us to try this place with them for the first time to get our honest opinion. These were made just as well as I can get them back home. We just wished we had ordered more. read more

Great french dip and au jus sandwiches! We appreciated that grilled cheese for the kids was affordable ($3), yet tasty enough that the adults enjoyed the kids' leftovers. Would have rated 5 stars, except that we waited over 30 minutes for our order, with 4 kids in the car waiting. If the wait was going to be that long, it would have been nice to be told upfront so we knew what to expect. There were only a couple people ahead of us, so that surprised us. We will be back, though! Very tasty! read more

Solid sandy and steak place. Garlic fries are a must. Affordable. Menu could be formatted a bit better, when I was there there were extra whiteboards and some clutter which was a bit confusing. I would like to note, this is an "old" review, I was here in January, but forgot to write the review at the time. read more

Excellent service, the milkshakes can't be beat, the best Philly I've had in years and the garlic fries dipped in fry sauce are pure heaven.

Do not let the outside fool you, this is one of those hidden gems. The cheesesteaks are very reminiscent of the great ones I had in Chicago. The star of the show however has to be the burgers. Made from scratch: big, thick, and juicy. Me, I'm a mushroom and Swiss kinda guy and they did not disappoint. Big fat juicy burger with plenty of shrooms, nice drippy cheese, and no scrimping on the lettuce and tomatoes. Standard sides of fries or rings, order either one and receive plenty (if you have any room in the tummy after the burger). read more

Great Philly cheesesteak sandwiches. Super friendly service. We have been coming for many years. We stop by 3-4 times a month.

Stop looking for places to eat at. This is it! This place has unique phillys, burgers, hotdogs, sandwiches and more. My family loved everything we ate (philly, burger, dog, fries, soup, milkshake). The couple that runs the little hole in the wall is super nice and has fun doing it. If what you want isn't on the menu they will make if for you if they have the ingredients. I wish that there were more places like this around. read more

I stopped into Joe's Philly Cheesesteaks for a late lunch on a road trip from Montana to Seattle. The cheesesteak was cooked to order which took about 10 minutes and it was delicious! The bread roll was warm and very soft. I chatted with a woman who was one of the owners and she was very friendly, kind, and welcoming. This is exactly the kind of small business I love to support! Nice folks! Good lunch fare, lots of choices, and at a great price. I definitely recommend Joe's!

This place = Love. Let me tell you, I called about 5 minutes before they closed asking if it would be okay to order 3 sandwiches to go (I know, I'm an as$hole but seriously everything closes early on Saturday which being from California is UNHEARD OF!! WTH IDAHO?). Not only was the lady/owner? a total sweetheart, she was cheerful and remembered me when we got there.https://www.yelp.com/ They don't rush you out, they don't lock you in. They served an additional 6 or 7 customers after their posted closing time, and eventually the cook/owner? came out and talked to our table to make sure everything was good! :D The place itself has an interesting vibe, all oak and a little obvious they haven't had any kind of professional assistance on the layout/signage but just know you're coming here for the food/service and NOT the Ambiance...otherwise it'd be 5 Stars! Joe I guess has since moved on, and this is the 3rd generation, but I say they're doing great and if you need a bite to eat, not only were they FANTASTIC as far as flavor, they were also one of the few places open past 6pm on a Saturday!! WHAT?!?!? read more

Not sure why there are so many 5 star reviews. The food was all just ok. I like that they have so many shake flavors but still not worthy of extra stars. The order was super slow and the burgers we're over cooked and the Philly was nothing special. All in all it was just ok. read more

I have been going there since it opened with the original owners.. which were amazing. This last time we went snappy attitudes and all of the employees paid attention to their own conversation.. I my self will not go back. They took down the memorial of the original owners.. that in its self is enough not to go back. Besides the higher prices, less food, and the customer service since the passing of the owner is NOT GOOD. read more

Excellent grub made by some most excellent folk. You're going here for a quick bite, not to look at the decor. But those quick bites are going to be very happy ones for your tummy.
