The soda fountain did not mix enough carbonated water into the soda syrup. Food was good. Dude at the front register was duh!

This place and I go back, way back when I was a student at SIU in the mid 70's ( yes I helped…read moreinvent dirt I'm that old, ha!). Anyhow I loved it then and I love it now - after all these years. The interior has been redone except for the old wooden bar at the very front. They used to have high back wooden booths along the south wall and east windows, with some additional small tables in the middle. The wooden booths are now gone and there's more of an open air setting with tables along the south wall with wooden bench style seats and high top tables in the center. They're still some pinball machines at the back that bring back fun memories. I found an old favorite on the menu, and ordered it - The Mcbide Special! It's a turkey, ham, and Swiss sandwich and comes with lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, oregano, vinaigrette, a pickle, and chips ($11.95). It was just as good as I remembered it!. I sat at the bar where I was waited on by a friendly and polite employee. I enjoyed my visit, and reminded myself I shouldn't take so long to return. 5 stars for great service, sandwiches, and some fond nostalgia! Check them out!

Service today was great - freshly made. They have a lot of the original sandwich recipes - and the McBride Special is my absolute favorite.

I was interested in trying their baked treats, and upon my visit, I found exactly what I wanted to get. The menu variety was good. They offer cookies, pastries, breakfast meals, lunch meals like sandwiches, etc. The pricing was reasonable. I got a Pink Cookie (Southern IL specialty), a Chocolate Chunk Walnut cookie, a Date Walnut cookie, something called an Orange Chipper (a type of cookie), as well as an Italian sandwich (called Bakery Sub on the menu). The Date Walnut cookie was my top favorite. It was soft and also crunchy where the walnuts were. The Orange Chipper was my next favorite, followed by the Pink Cookie (iced frosting shortbread cookie). The sandwich was loaded and had a good flavor. The deli meats (ham, and salami) were fresh. The service was good. This was a gem of a find for me and I would go back there again when visiting Carbondale. Definitely recommended.

No manners when serving drinks and seemed to have an attitude. The restaurant had a nice vibe, but sadly I would not return here due to the poor service and quality of the drinks.

Let's start with the chips and salsa, standard free appetizer fare at every Mexican restaurant in…read moreAmerica. These chips are fresh and crunchy and amazing. So good in fact that I needed to ask, "are these made fresh?" They are and the difference is noticeable. The salsa fresca is awesome. If you're brain washed into thinking that thin flaky chips and thick pasty salsa is good, you're in for a shock. After lunch, my wife and I went back for dinner because of the chips and salsa. Other bonuses: The margaritas were good. Strong. A** kickingly strong. The food was tasty, but I don't know if it was exceptional. The service was a little slow. I wish they brought more than 2 flour tortillas per meal. Candidly, the chips and salsa are so good that everything else came in second.

Checked out this family friendly Mexican restaurant in Carbondale. Don Sol is like your standard…read morestrip mall place with margaritas, burritos, and more. It hardly is that authentic, but it's not trying to be though. Honestly it's better than it looks. The prices are kind of expensive unfortunately. Basically this is classic Mexican American food. It's got a few locations, including this one. This has the feel of a big chain to it, though. Anyway, the drinks and food are okay if not expecting much. The high prices make it hard to be satisfied. It's about $12 for a margarita. The Blue Lagoon is made with Blue Curaçao and it got us lit for sure. Food is even more expensive. It's about $15 for the Taco Salad Veggie. This comes in a crispy tortilla bowl, and is filled with broccoli, cheese dip and sour cream which I left off, guacamole, lettuce, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, and zucchini. Good stuff but certainly not worth the charge. The rest of the menu has typical Americanized stuff like fajitas and tacos. For sure it's not bad food. It's located on Giant City Road by University Mall. There's some things okay for vegetarians.
