Had five different pizza types. All were very good. Prices are reasonable. Server was exceptionally nice but completely overloaded and the kitchen seemed very behind. It's obvious it's tough to find and keep enough good staff just about everywhere in the area. And wow, the outdoor patio with live music is a hidden gem. read more

Great spot! And dare I say a hidden gem in the Northwoods! Fantastic outdoor patio with a fire pit, lots of shade, and a fun vibe. Great beer selection. Cool bar space inside. And excellent service. It's definitely not your "typical" Northwoods pub. No burgers. No cheese curds. Coke in a can. More eclectic menu. But they executed what they do have on the menu extremely well. Had the mushroom barley, tasted like water. I was super excited to come here it's been on my list forever. Soup was so flat, seriously water. Also got the meat lovers pizza. Meh. May as well make one at home. I want to like this place so much but wow was not good. Not for food. I didn't take pics. My mushroom soup was literally watery looking and the pizza not great. This is fun spot with solid food, great beer, a nice atmosphere inside and out, and nice people. We sat outside and there were plenty of clean tables where you could have some privacy or form a large group. The inside was a rustic cottage style, but modern, clean and organized. Our server, Alex, was great: helpful and full of personality. Well done. Food was good - Walleye sandwich and a pizza. Just casual and good. The Musky Spit brown ale was excellent. A very cute little place. Pizza and grilled cheese were delicious. Kids chicken tenders were a hit. Kids mac and cheese a disappointment clearly kraft when menu made it seem homemade when stating elbow pasta and cheese sauce. Service was slow due to low staffing. read more

A good friend from college was in town for a few days so I took advantage his visit to try a few local places, like the Ale House, that I've heard about but hadn't tried yet -- I travel a lot and look for good places to eat when I'm on the road but I rarely go out when I'm home. When we arrived close to 1:00pm on a Wednesday in October, the parking lot in front of the restaurant was full (and we had to find a parking place across the highway) but when we entered the dining room was less than half-full and we were seated right away. (It looks like there may be some other business in the same building.) Because we are beer aficionados we immediately began to study the beer list. Fortunately they offered flights so we could try several of their many offerings from a number of regional craft breweries. The selection process was pretty low tech -- the server provided us with a couple of pens and a sticky note to write down our choices. A few minutes later the four, four ounce pours were delivered, arranged in the order we wrote our selections on the sticky note. I enjoyed then all -- but if I didn't that would be on the brewery and not the Ale House. The lunch menu features wood fired pizzas and sandwiches along with some appetizers (one of which is technically a salad), a few more salads, and several sides. There is also a "Kid's Menu," which can be a huge plus for families. I decided to try the prime rib sandwich and my friend ordered the walleye sandwich. The prime rib sandwich was excellent. A crusty hoagie was stuffed full of tender beef with just enough au jus to keep it moist and just enough mozzarella to add both flavor and creaminess. A small cup of au jus and a generous handful of kettle chips rounded out the plate. My friend went with the walleye sandwich. He too enjoyed every bite. Of particular note -- the two large fillets are baked -- not breaded and deep fried like you find at many north wood's establishments. This really puts the focus on the fish -- and not a gob of greasy breading. Two thumbs up for this. Between the generous portions and a pint's worth of beer we left fully sated. Though their menu is safe and predictable it is well suited to the tastes of the hoards of tourists that migrate northwards during the summer and winter vacation seasons. And though the food is also prepared and served in a safe and predictable manner it was properly cooked and seasoned and should satisfy the majority of those who choose to eat at the Ale House. read more

Shared a warm pretzel with jalapeno cheese sauce and honey mustard. Next up, shared a perfectly prepared, 3 cheese - grilled cheese. Wonderful lunch at this cute little place. We came for a late lunch after a kayak on a local lake! The beer I had was a dark brew- called Deshutes Obsidian Stout Nitro! So creamy and rich and good. One of my friends had a tart raspberry ale- and when the bartender combined the two for us for a taste-!WOW!! We arrived in mid afternoon and had the place almost all to ourselves. We sat at the bar and had a very attentive bartender. He was a lot of fun. We ordered off the lunch menu and there was a couple things for the vegetarians among us. :) I had a vegetarian quesapizza which had an artichoke dip sauce on it with plenty of veggies and cheese. really good crust, very good taste. If you are in the area, you need to stop here! This is such a gem in the north woods and I hope it never leaves. First, they have a top notch craft beer selection for a rural area. They also brew a few beers which is fun and you can get a fight. Second, their boulder bakery pretzels (you can pick two from plain, garlic, jalapeño) with mustard and cheese dip are phenomenal!!!! Third, they have a delicious menu of sandwiches and wood fired pizzas. When we go up north we always come here twice because I can never decide between a wrap or pizza! All of my friends and family that have visited here love this spot too. It's an unexpected high quality given the small town, but it pays great tribute to its roots in boulder junction. The big surprise for me was the salmon entree salad - beautiful leafy greens, irresistible bits of walnut and blue cheese, a commendably un-timid lemony dressing, and a faultlessly grilled filet. The outdoor seating is delightful, and the servers are terrific. It's practically walking distance from the center of Boulder Junction, one of the nicest small towns I've ever visited. (Frankly, I hope it steals residents from Minocqua, which now seems overrated as a town despite the handsome lakes.) read more

A Gastropub feel in the north woods! Our large group (12) had a wonderful experience at dinner. Mariah did an excellent job managing all of our orders and even separated checks. The food was great. Keep in mind it's not a full bar, just wine and beer. (Lots of good options though!) The menu is simple with sandwiches, pizza, and apps. The night we were there, they had a shrimp special that was spectacular with rice and basil slaw. We loved the walleye sandwich and the special. They don't take reservations, so we got there right when they opened and were immediately seated. In the past, we have been there for the live music. The back area is beautiful and the perfect spot to listen to music and enjoy a tasty beverage! read more

If you are tired of the same Northern Wisconsin fried pub food that many restaurants serve here, this is the place to go. Excellent selection of craft beers, delicious pizzas (try the Steakhouse or Mediterranean), sandwiches (try the Walleye or Pulled Pork), salads (try the Lemon-Caper Salmon or Harvest salad), a non-fried fish option every Friday night, and a bbq rib special on Saturday nights. You can ask for workarounds if you are gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan. Their staff is excellent and friendly. The indoor dining space and bar is beautiful and there is a spacious outdoor patio, which is perfect for listening to the live music they have throughout the summer. This is my favorite Northwoods restaurant. I grew up in the Northwoods and most restaurants are either diners, pizza, or burger places--which, don't get me wrong, are great when that's what you are in the mood for, but it's so nice to have an option that is so much more--both menu-wise and ambiance-wise. I live in a super foodie city now, and I have to say, the Ale House measures up to any place where I currently live! I go with my family every time I'm back home! Their beer selection is great and so are their pizzas (especially the margherita), soups, salads, and anything else I've tried. The outdoor area with the firepit and chairs is a perfect spot to sip a beer while you wait for a table. read more

Delicious new find! Was told to come here by a family friend and skipped breakfast because of how much they raved about it! We had the Boulder Bakery Pretzels (Plain and Garlic), Porketta pizza (very good and filling) as well as the Prime Rib Sandwich! I think what struck us most was that they let us sit outside even though they weren't serving outside. We had our dog with us and were able to have him with us on the back patio. We ordered our food and drinks from the bar and the gentleman behind the bar helped us carry it out! Perfect way to spend our Friday lunch!!! We will definitely be coming back read more

This is the best place to eat up north bar none. Beautiful restaurant, amazing food and great service. I feel like I'm family there! Try their hot soft pretzels, amazing beers and yummy desserts. Everything I've tried there is good. My only wish is that they had more specials! Came in for supper on a Wednesday evening. Fortunately we called ahead for reservations, because the place was packed. Our server was good, the beer was good, and the food was good. We shared a pretzel for an app. It was huge and hot, and came with two dipping sauces. The honey mustard was loaded with horseradish, which I loved. The other was a Chipotle cheese sauce. Both were excellent. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. It had so much pork on it that I gave up after one bite and used a knife and fork. My wife had the cheese steak, which also had an abundance of meat. I will definitely come back next time I'm in Boulder Junction. read more
