Amazing! The BEST 90 minute massage I've had. Dena is so knowledgeable and so welcoming. Probably shouldn't write a review so close to my massage high, but after 2 "meh" massages from the massage chains around town, I'm happy to spread the word. Dena was incredible. My visit was prompted by my neck and shoulders, barking from the deadlifting I did the day before. ACL Fest was the very next day and I needed some relief pronto. Dena had availability the same day, thankfully. The place is a bit tough to find with limited signage. Just look for the address on the building and stroll right in. Parking's available on the street (2 hour) or in the driveway, and either option is free. Dena welcomed me in and got right down to business. We talked initially and throughout on my fitness routine and what I was favoring that day. Dena paid attention and hit the spots I was looking to get at the pressure I wanted, but also managed to find a few bumps I didn't even know I had. At certain points I actually started hallucinating, which happens to me anytime it's a great massage. The hour zipped by with just the perfect balance of conversation and silence...a very friendly, caring atmosphere. Being an endurance athlete who's very hard on my body, I've had my fair share of visits with massage therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, and physical therapists here in Austin. Many bad ones and a few good ones. Sometimes I walk out feeling better but most of the time I walk out feeling like all I did was waste my money and an hour of my life. But of all my experiences in Austin, I have never been more satisfied than my experiences with Dena Kinate! The way I stumbled onto her is actually kind of a funny story. It was an average morning at work and I randomly struck up a conversation with a customer about health and nutrition. She mentioned that she was visiting from Germany and was in town to visit family and friends. "What are some of your favorite things to do when you visit?" I asked. She listed off a few of the usual things to do in Austin, but the last one she mentioned was, "I'm on my way from here to get a massage from a woman named Dena Kinate. She is hands down the best massage therapist in Austin! Every time I visit, I make sure to make an appointment with her!" I was intrigued. I told her about how my right hip had been bothering me and causing me to have to cut back on my training. "You have to see Dena!" She immediately said. She seemed so enthusiastic and confident in Dena's abilities that I decided to call and make an appointment. A few days later I arrived at Dena's office which is conveniently located in central Austin and a familiar building to me since I've run past it countless times. Her office is a very calming environment that is clean and welcoming. We went over what had been ailing me and she said confidently, "I'm gonna spend most of the hour on that hip and we'll get it loosened up." I agreed with the hope that I'd be able to get back into the training I was so desperately missing. I let her know that she didn't have to worry about hurting me and she could do whatever she needed to do. As I mentioned, I've been to many massage therapists and p.t.s and I can pretty quickly tell when one knows what they're doing and when one is just kind of poking around and doing the basics. I was immediately impressed with Dena's ability, knowledge, and thoroughness.She filled me in on what she was doing and why, and really pinpointed the causes of my tightness and pain. She's also extremely easy to talk to and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation. I have now been back for two more visits and I'm happy to say that I'm back out pounding the pavement in the morning sun. I can't recommend Dena enough! I was in Austin this week to do some cycling and enjoy a bit of R&R. I happened to see the sign for Applied Pressure at the building where I was staying. Intrigued, I stopped in to see if there were any openings while I was in town. Unfortunately, Dena was completely booked. I asked to get on her waiting list incase she had any cancellations. As fate would have it, someone cancelled and a day later I was experiencing Dena's 'magical touch'. I'm a huge proponent of massage. My experience here was the best that I've had in Austin. Dena is clearly very knowledgeable about the body and understands how to work in a way that will create more balance. I get massages for the purpose of addressing my body's imbalances, and for once I found someone who listened to me and gave me what I wanted. From my experience, most therapists are only skilled in one technique and tend to see the body from a somewhat narrow viewpoint.
