Canandaigua is kind of a swanky Rochester summertime place..in the late fall/edge of winter walking…read moredown to our French bistro...it has the charm but a bit of the desolation of downtown Akron at 7pm (certainly not in the throes of the tourist season..) . Fortunately...this Finger Lakes head-of-the-lake town is very pleasant. We shook up the routine from our usual B and B and stayed here.. a very cool old Victorian place with a very cool Innkeeper (Karen and I talked the merits of Pink Floyd and also the local music venue CMAC). The Innkeeper swapped out her life in Hawaii for a very different kind of winter...but she kept her good island spirit along with the eclectic sense of these Inns. Good DVD selection if you are staying in for the night (along with Roku/cable TV)...including some decent indy movies. Room was charming... nice themes of the Women's Freedom trail on the wall as well. Breakfast was excellent along with some really fine house baked cookies. Easy parking in front.. The downstairs is a nice wood floored living room with the dining area. Will definitely be back..

Bed bugs! As I write this, I am completely and utterly revolted. I stayed here for a bachelorette…read moreparty, it was great until I thought I found a tick on my pillow. I was wrong it was a bed bug. My friend and I who stayed in the bottom bunk have quarter sized welts all over our extremities. I have had to take off from work, was put on antibiotics and steroids and now am going to have to call an exterminator to check that I didn't bring them back that may home in Long Island. They have denied any responsibility even though I have never had bed bugs and this is the only place I've stayed other than my home in 6 months. Also my husband and my friends husband who were at home have not had any bites, thus the only place we could have gotten them was in this bed that we shared here. They refuse to refund me my money. DO NOT STAY HERE IF YOU DON'T WANT BED

We have been going to the Finger Lakes region for the last few years, but never stay close to the…read morelake. This time we decided to find a rental closer to Seneca Lake, and this cabin was. The location, was great. Close to many wineries and not too far from Geneva's local town to go out to eat and to Wegmans. Our main concerns are actually with the home specifically. The grounds are beautiful. It looks a little colt like, with the way the houses are set up but well maintained and a very welcoming space for our two small dogs to run. What was problematic for us was the inside or structure. The water smelled horrific. It actually smelt like rotten eggs and it was apparent the water had not been treated in a very long time. We actually went and bought gallons of water to cook with, wash our hands, drink and brush our teeth. Only two of us stayed in the home, thankfully, otherwise the smell would have been even worse with more guests. Next, the grill was filthy and had not been cleaned in quite some time. The directions clearly state the renter is responsible to clean the grill and/or the cleaning crew and neither have happened in a while. It was filled with grease and made us apprehensive to even use it with foil. Another major concern was the front step was loose and rocky. When entering, I almost fell a few times. This needs to be fixed for everyone's safety. The cabin was well equipped with all necessary household essentials, but there are several cob webs that need to be cleaned and the bug zapper is filled with bugs (inside the house) which really grossed us out. We appreciate the zapper there to catch bugs inside the house, but the ceilings and zapper need to regularly be cleaned. Finally, the dishwasher is extremely loud/broken and needs to be repaired so we were unable to use that. What is really upsetting is we emailed the owners and expressed all of our concerns and how the above really impacted our stay and we felt the price was not fair in conjunction with what we paid for (over $1200 for 3 nights) Their response confirmed they would be fixing everything we notated and also made mention they planned to sell their property so they were not really worried about what review I would write. While I understand they are going to be moving on, I took that as quite a smack in the face. Basically saying well, we are retiring and selling so we do not care what you have to say. So conclusively, I felt it was necessary to share a true and candid review. ***changed from 2 to 1 stars because now I'm getting nasty emails from the owner. Unreal I'm being harassed because I told the truth. I tried to work with him via email but they weren't even sorry nor cared and claimed I was "bitching". Oh I'm sorry all we wanted was clean non contaminated water, that must be asking way too much from a $400 per night rental. I edited to add that he's now sending harassing emails with lies because he's upset that we told the truth! He's claiming his house was messy and another claiming we left dog poop - all lies! Unreal he would treat people this way. See the photos for his nasty comments. Also, after all of the harassing emails and nasty comments I decided to look up the owners and found out he was sentenced in a pedophile ring!! Omg- how horrific and now I'm worried for my safety. Makes more sense now especially since he was so rude, nasty and demeaning to us. BEWARE do not stay here!! Just look up the owner, Robert Lawty and you'll read some really disturbing news!! Wow, I'm so bothered by this.

We went as a group of 4 for my sister's 30th birthday. While the rooms were very nice and the staff…read morewere friendly, the resort is very spaced out and there aren't actually any staff in the hotel buildings themselves so if anything was needed we had to call to have it brought to us instead of just asking at a front desk. This happened when the bottle of wine my brother in law ordered for our room for my sister's birthday was no there and we waited about an hour before it was finally brought over. Then came our spa experience: I am currently going through cancer treatments and filled out my medical form at least a week in advance and at the time of making my reservation a month ago and it was not until I got into the room for my treatment that I was told that they weren't able to accommodate me for it. I wouldn't have minded picking something different if I knew this before hand but I did not. The tech offered a facial instead which was actually really nice and relaxing, but significantly more expensive the treatment I had originally selected and they were going to charge me the price of the facial instead. They did end up changing the price to match the original treatment but that was after I had asked and explained the situation. Then my sisters treatment (the birthday girl) was "running behind" and they kept pushing the treatment back by 5 mins for a good 30 mins. We explained that we had reservations at the 1833 Restaurant and were afraid of missing it due to her treatment being 80 mins long. They called the restaurant and let them know for us. Come to find out that they took another person with the same name in place of my sister and when my sisters time came they were no longer able to accommodate an 80 min treatment so she had to get a 50 minute treatment. They did apologize profusely and gifted my sister some spa products but it did not make for a very relaxing experience and was definitely not the experience we wanted to have that day. THEN CAME THE RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE! We were able to make our reservation just 15 mins late, and at first the service was fine, they even brought us extra bread after we raved about how good it was. My sister has a severe shellfish allergy along with a dairy intolerance and we informed them of this before we even ordered. Some how the staff thought this meant she was allergic to gluten and brought her out gluten free bread. We explained again the seriousness of her shellfish allergy and the dairy intolerance, they still kept trying to offer her gluten free bread throughout the meal. The meals itself were good, my pork chop was very thick and the middle of it was pretty undercooked which I would have pointed out to the waiter if he came at all during our meal but he did not. Once we were finished with our meal we waited for over 45 mins for our bills after we went to the host table to ask because we kept trying to flag down someone to get our bills and then another 15 mins for the waiter to run our credit card. About an hour later my sister broke out in hives and was up vomiting during the night which makes us believe there was some type of cross contamination. Overall, we didn't have a very great experience. It was not the relaxation and peaceful experience that we all hoped it would have been, especially given how much we paid for everything.

As indicated above, the packwood house is literally, a rooms only space. There is absolutely nothing on site. Guests who want coffee or to just check in/out must do so at the Sherwood inn up the road. This might be ok in most seasons, but in the middle of February when the city is having a polar vortex and the wind chills are -40, it's not ok at all. The rooms are old and not at all worth the per night price point (and there is a two night stay minimum). The bedding is not soft, towels are thin and scratchy. Toilet paper is single ply. You only get two coffee k cups even though they know you're staying a minimum of two night. No complimentary water bottles. The TV is as old as the furniture and no premium channels. It's a big ol NOPE for me. I'd recommend a cute Airbnb or even a holiday inn express room over this place. Save your money this is not the vibe.

My late partner loved the finger lakes, and she often told me that we needed to come up to see them…read moretogether. Unfortunately, we never made it together, so since I was taking care of some business down in the city, I decided to come up and spend a few days exploring the area. Also today is her birthday, so it made not only this trip, but especially today, extra special.... There are 11 lakes in all each with its own charm. You could easily spend a few days, just exploring one lake or two. I took three days to explore as much of the region as possible, so it gave me a little "taste of the whole thing", so I will remember special places that I can come back to. This welcome center is in the town of Geneva, which is at the very top of Seneca Lake. It's pretty much the middle of the entire finger Lakes region. Geneva, or the town of Watkins Glen, about 45 minutes south of here, at the other end of Seneca Lake, are both great "jumping off spots" for the entire region. This welcome center is beautiful. It sits right next to Seneca Lake, and is a great place to stop and get some information, or even stop and relax for a little while. Just outside the back of the center is the Lake, it's peaceful and has gorgeous views. They even have Adirondack chairs where you can just sit and relax for a little while. They have information about the lakes in the visitor center. There is also a "taste NY" store, which features finger Lakes products. You can get breakfast and lunch items, snacks, bakery items, souvenirs, beer, cider, , and wine. Definitely wine. The finger Lakes is a very large wine region, with between 130 to 150 wineries, the majority of which you can visit. They also have several different designated "wine trails", where you can visit wineries close to each other. (with that many wineries to visit, please make sure you have a designated driver...) This is definitely the right place to stop while you are exploring the region. I enjoyed my visit Thank you.

NOTE: this was…read morenot a rest stop visitor center off the road, but one 6 miles from the thruway....i recommend that the state notate the distance on the highway sign as well as have signage once off the thruway. Why this place doesn't get 5 stars). However, once there it was a beautiful center on gorgeous Seneca Lake. They sell food, drinks, NY state wines, NY state products, etc. There are several brochures ( what I prefer even though I do lots of online research as well), and a tasting counter which is relatively inexpensive ($4). We had a lovely conversation with Don and his wife Marie, who were at an information booth. There is also a cool children's play structure outside. The photos don't do this center justice, but make sure you stop here before you plan anything!!!

The sleeping room was small, very dusty, full of cobwebs, and uncomfortably hot, 83 degrees, (the window AC unit did not work properly). The refrigerator was located in the closet and was unplugged upon arrival as was one of the only two lamps in the room. I had to crawl behind the bed (very dusty and dirty) to plug-in the lamp for marginal room illumination. How anyone could report that the place was clean leaves me wondering how some people live. The double size bed was situated up against the wall, making it necessary for the second bed occupant to crawl over the other bed occupant to exit the bed (very thoughtless design layout). This room should have been designated for single person use only. The parking area that was designated for the house guests only was extremely inadequate (tight and dotted with large stones that one had to navigate to exit the vehicle. The main driveway open area was restricted to the proprietors use only. This is slightly short sited and selfish. Speaking about the proprietor, she was missing in action, intentionally avoiding the obligatory social contact that is expected and necessary for a B & B hostess. The minimal breakfast was set out on a small serving table in the front living room and you were expected to share your meal with the numerous bees on the front porch while balancing a plate on your lap. The website pictured dining table was completely unavailable and behind closed doors. We never set eyes on the dining table. All I could think of was a bait and switch game during our entire stay. The swimming pool exhibited a closed sign for the entire period with no access on both 90 degree days. After thirty years of operating a B & B establishment (as is posted on the website), I would expect that the commonly written criticisms would have been improved and corrected by this time. I visited Waterloo, New York a few months back during an ice storm between Rochester and Syracuse…read morewhen it was no longer safe to drive. I pulled off Interstate 90 after my friend looked up a Microtel nearby. However, The Lux was before said hotel and looked nice, so I decided to stop there. The receptionist was friendly and helpful and welcomed my highly trained service dog. She helped me find a room on the first floor near an exit, so he could do his business easily. The room was clean and smelled good unlike some hotels. Also, the furniture and decor were modern. I noticed they had a seasonal outdoor pool, which is always a welcome treat and preferred, because who wants to go swimming inside without sun and reeking of chlorine? Lastly, the continental breakfast the next morning was the best I've ever had! Seriously-- They had made-to-order Belgian waffles, mini omelettes with onions and bell peppers, sausage patties, bacon, cheddar and Swiss cheese, bagels, cereal options, fresh fruit, juice, and coffee. I made a few trips to the buffet and grabbed some sausage for the road for my dog. I appreciated that there was an attendant at the breakfast station keeping everything both clean and well-stocked. If I'm ever in the area again, I most definitely will be back!

No hot water from sink when we first arrived, 10:30 at nite. Girl at the desk told us there was no hot water anywhere in the hotel, which turned out to be a complete fabrication. I mean, WTF???? Why in the world would she have told us that?? Other than those things, ok. Of course that's a little like asking Mrs Lincoln how she liked the play after that one problem
