Bobby Brown made a few good points but what was the Whitney Point?
    Fox E.

I can understand why Bobby Brown is disliked by many, but what's the point of hating his late ex wife? I don't see the Whitney point. Really nice rest area and take one of my favorites on the way down to Binghamton. It has nice amenities, and even though there are no restaurants, it really is just a bathroom break and some toilets, and should be judged as such. But as far as these kinds of places go this one is really nice and I appreciate it. It's directly off the highway without any "faffing around." Speaking of faffing are you free later.

It is an ok stop with restroom facilities, vending machines and plenty of travel information literature to pick up. Extremely clean and there is always an attendant on duty. A plus when traveling solo at night. On this occasion there were tables spread out full of goodies, coffee, juices free for the take from the Boys Scouts. Of, course donations accepted. They were wonderful, with plenty of goods to offer for all tastes. I think they do offer free WiFi.

This is a nice rest area on 81 South. Around exit 10 I think. Nice views. Easy on and off the road. Nice picnic area. You can park here for a few minuets to stretch your legs or for a longer time to take a nap. And that text can wait until you stop here.

I cannot begin to explain my pleasure in this rest stop! The bathroom was absolutely so clean!! I have never been in a rest stop so clean. I actually saw a staff member come into the rest room after leaving with cleaning equipment, ready to sanitize before the next guest! If you're on a long ride I suggest waiting for this stop! A plus for the staff here!! It is rare to see such a clean facility!

I personally just didn't have a great experience at this stop. The inside looks lovely but it had an unpleasant odor that is hard to describe. it's possible my stop was affected by the other people who were there, so take this review with a grain of salt, but the vibes were just off. It looked clean, but felt very dirty. I don't know how else to explain it. All of the people I encountered were rude; not just one person, but multiple people. I wanted to get a photo of the sign before we headed out and there were two different families just letting their kids play and climb on the sign while myself and another person were trying to snap a photo. I had to wait a good 8-10 minutes for them to leave to snap one photo of the sign without random children on it. I have nothing against kids playing and waited patiently, but there was a literal playground for children right across from the sign. It's more just that people didn't seem to be very kind or considerate here. Again, this is a fine stop if you need to get off the road and there are things to see here, I just purse didn't personally feel this welcome center was very welcoming.

It has just a Dunkin and a Green Apple convenience store inside and a Mobil gas station outside. The bathroom was clean and looked pretty new, which led me to a curious observation. The men's room had none of the hot air hand dryers that have been common for the last decade or so. They didn't even have a paper towel dispenser on the wall. The only option for drying my hands was a roll of paper towels standing upright on a sink. Kind of bizarre, don't you think?

This is yet another example of absolutely awful price hikes and upcharging and price gouging at rest areas. Every Fast Food Outlet in here is massively overpriced, some more than others. Coffee is almost twice the price it is supposed to be. The gas here is anywhere from $0.10 to $0.40 more expensive than it would be off the highway, but off-highway gas is kind of a no-go because you have to pay extra in tolls to get off and on the highway again, nearly negating the difference. Not to mention waiting at the toll booth oftentimes, costing you several minutes. They know the majority aren't going to do that and they upcharge you accordingly. Grr. So they really screw you over with this toll road and these plazas. Now they are good for stopping and resting and sleeping, pretty safe with all the trucks around, and they have pretty decent facilities, but having said that, the service at a lot of these little places is awful. And perhaps worst of all, if you nap for too long, then when you try to get off and pay your toll, you could well get the third degree about being on the Thruway for too long and they could accuse you of trying to cheat the system. Good times all around.

So I guess you could say I was introduced to Port by Ron. The problem with the service plazas along the Thruway is the same as it ever was, if you'll forgive me for paraphrasing the Talking Heads, or directly quoting them I should say. The problem is that they are very stingy and penny-pinching, so all the chain stores here charge more than their regular franchise menus. Add to that a set of generally very disgruntled employees, and that the gas here is $20.30 more than it should be. I find this kind of thing pretty appalling to be honest. And don't nap for too long at this relatively safe rest area. If you do, when you get off the highway they may give you a hard time and claim you're scamming them. My previous review said.. What I really don't like about these travel plazas are the prices and the really annoying selection of chain type eats and drinks. It's so corporate and it just drives me crazy. The gas prices are anywhere from 10 cents to $0.30 more expensive than off the highway. The single solitary reason that they do not get one star for me is that it's so convenient. So many rest stops make you twist and turn and zig zag and spend a couple of minutes driving to the rest site. Or cross the highway or even walk to an island in the middle of the road. Looking at you Angola. But anyway - this remains the only travel plaza owned by Lord Byron himself. I can prove it. And I will do so. Exactly 10 years from tonight. Give or take.
