A friend of mine recommended this location for lunch, I was apprehensive since my last multiple experiences with this chain left a lot to be desired. The Waterloo location is a hidden gem in plain sight, I had one of the best cheeseburgers in quite a while, juicy, fresh toppings and soft brioche bun and the fries where also perfectly cooked. I live in Belleville so I was curious if Applebees had changed in my area. I stopped at the Swansea location for the same menu item and guess what? It sucked... dry overcooked patty with a stale bun, just as I remembered from my past experiences, do yourself a favor and drive to Waterloo....!!! The general manager of this location is incredible. I don't know her name but I know she's been there for at least several years. I've seen her handle an unruly, borderline psychotic couple while keeping her staff calm and focused and causing as little of a disruption as possible for the other customers. Just last week a large party (10+ people) sent their food back twice (once because the coleslaw on their food cooled it down...if your coleslaw is NOT cold wth are you even doing) and she was so polite the whole time and took over waiting on this table in place of a much newer server. As far as the food goes it's applebees, I consistently feel I get what I pay for and what is promised on the menu and staff members are most always very courteous and polite. Drinks are rather weak but I've always found this to be the case for this chain and the drinks here are stronger than some locations I've visited. It isn't gourmet but it's certainly above fast food, if you feel differently I bet the staff will do their best to fix whatever the problem may be. read more

This place has went downhill rapidly within the past few months. We went there this evening, what a horrible experience. I ordered the steak which looked like it could of been eaten with one bite. We had the boneless wings for an appetizer, they looked like the bagged Tyson anytizers you can get from your local grocery store. We have given this place several chances but tonight was it, we'll not return. Don't waste your money, pay a little more and go to Gallagher's. I've given this restaurant another chance and to my surprise, it was the right decision. They have very much improved their staff and quality of food. Not only was our waitress, Ashley, completely unprofessional with multiple hickeys on her neck with she did not even try to cover up with a jacket or make up but she also got my wife's order wrong and was not apologetic about it. Rude and horrible customer service. Went there and asked about a dish. I can't have spicy food. They told me it wasn't spicy at all so I went ahead and got it..it was! They didn't point out the flaming Apple next to it (I didn't realize that meant dishes were spicy). I told them I couldn't eat it and they wouldn't replace it. Went in with a party of 6 was quoted 30 minutes. Asked how much longer after being there an hour and was told 10 more minutes. We left after not being seated an hour and a half (3x as long as we were quoted). I've managed several restaurants and what was apparent to me was the lack of management and organization. As a chain restaurant, Applebee's seem to be pretty much the same most anywhere you go. I don't really have high expectations at chains, just decent food at a fair price. That's what we have had whenever we have gone here in the past. On the plus side, our waitress was friendly, helpful, and got our order correct; food came out promptly save for the dessert which seemed to take longer than the other courses. On the other hand, some of the food left a lot to be desired. We decided to try the new Pot Sticker appetizer. They were deep fried crispy little things served on top of a plate of undressed salad greens and assorted cabbages etc. with a dipping sauce. There is nothing wrong with deep fried crispy little things, however Pot Stickers are not supposed to be deep fried or crispy!! They should be cooked in a pot or pan and are a form of a dumpling; they should be moist not potato-chip-crispy. Please change the description in the menu or something so that people know they will be getting deep fried junk. I was thoroughly disappointed by them mainly because they were nothing like what I was expecting. My caesar salad was under dressed, but the waitress quickly brought more dressing which rectified the problem. The fries and riblets were great as usual. I confess, I do enjoy those what-the-heck-part-of-the-animal-is-this "riblets"; it's a weakness of mine, I'm a sucker for food slathered in sauce, especially spicy sweet Asian sauce. The disappointment of the night however was the dessert. We tried the S'mores Churros. The chocolate sauce with toasted melty mini marshmallows was fine, but the churros themselves were NOT. They were extremely greasy, to the point of dripping grease onto the plate when you held one up; there was at least a teaspoon full of grease on the plate underneath them. Besides being overly greasy, they were dense and chewy/tough; the absolute worst churros I have ever eaten. I don't know if it was the chain's fault, or just this location, but they were horrible. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT order the churros, and If you are in the mood for pot stickers, you will find them better at even the worst of the strip mall Chinese dive restaurants than at Applebee's. I guess Applebee's needs to stick with American fare, as they seem to bomb out with Asian and Mexican.... read more

Wow where do I begin.....went in last night with a rather large group by Applebee's standards (13). Our server Kris (older female), and Kaylyn (who I believe was a manager) were both great, even with the incompetence of the kitchen. Most of our party had the 2 for $20. We had to send 2 steaks back several times to get them done medium well. (1 steak 4 times, and another 3 times.) Seriously how hard is it to cook a steak? Normally I'd say it isn't but I guess some people are just that lazy/crappy at their job that they cannot do it. The Men's bathroom was trashed....soap all over the counter, a overflowing trashcan, and the paper towel dispensers were both barely working. A group of 5-6 employees at the corner station next to the bathrooms seemed more concerned with socializing than doing their jobs. I wouldn't recommend going there unless they get some new cooks, well at least do not go on a Saturday night. Obviously this hasn't been a bad Applebee's over all since they've been open in this location for 6 years. And normally I'm pretty impressed with the service and food at every other Applebee's I've been to. read more

Ok. I will tell you a story about a rather unpleasant and frankly rediculous experience I had at this location. It doesn't even involve any food. So I go in with my fiancee to eat some dinner. We go in and get seated. The waitress, Amy, asks us what kind of drinks we would like. I wasn't planning on ordering any alcohol but she tells me the drink specials so I figured what the heck, a drink sounds good. So I order the drink special. I proceed to hand her my ID. She looks at it and says "uh I don't know about the Missouri IDs, let me ask my manager." They rejected it because a little bit of laminate was tearing on the corner of my ID. Now I understand that there are certain ID standards that they have to abide by, but what really ticks me off is that I am 32 years with a beard down to my chest. I really look like a 19 year old let me tell you. Also my ID was accepted at the casino of all places just a few days ago. I guess it's ok for the state gaming commission but not the ID police at Crapplebees haha. This was beyond stupid. I guess Applebee's logic is torn laminate = fake ID. It really made me feel like a child. That is one of my biggest peeves especially when im 32 and a veteran. I think the manager needed something to complain about. Guess what being an Applebee's manager does not make you hot crap like you think it does. Needless to say I didn't order any food and walked out. Management didn't care and didn't try to stop me. They really care about their customers don't they? I know it really doesn't seem like a big deal, but it is a matter of principle for me.
