There are many Applebee's but after visiting this one today I discovered the special qualities that make it one of my favorites. First of all it has ample complimentary parking all around the building of the restaurant.The building itself has a very modern and beautiful exterior red brick architectural design, as well as an elegant yet comfortable interior design. The interior was very clean with comfortable booths and dining tables and chairs. It has a wonderful menu, very well designed and organized with photos of some of its most popular item. But what really makes a restaurant shine are its people, and its food. And here I was very impressed with both. When I arrived, a young and friendly gentleman opened the door for me at the entrance. This gesture would be normal in a high end restaurant, but here it definitely stood out. He then asked me if I preferred a booth or a table, and then he took me to the one of my preference, and asked me if that one was to my liking. It is in these attention to details that provide by actions a welcoming environment and the stage for an extraordinary dining experience. Then came into the scene, my server, Tiarra, a very friendly lady who immediately gave me a warm welcome and friendly greeting. She was very knowledgeable about the.menu and was able to help me in choosing the menu items for my meal. I started off with a Mango Smoothie to drink, that was listed under the Non-alcoholic Drinks menu page. For my main entrée I ordered the Whole Lotta Bacon Burger. The large size and generous amounts of ingredients clearly justified the high price of the item, that came with nicely cut fries. Everything was amazingly delicious, and the burger had a juicy all-beef patty with three extra slices of Applewood-smoked bacon. While I was eating another gentleman came around to see if everything was to my satisfaction as well as the Host. To culminate this amazing meal I ordered the new sizzlin' Cookie Dough Pie on a skillet. It came with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream. My server brought me a glass of iced water when I finished my Mango Smoothie. What a relaxing and great dining experience. I definitely highly recommend this place and look forward to returning in the near future. read more

Probably the last remaining Applebees in the Roanoke area. We love the restaurant chain, but this one is the worst. Cranky wait staff, orders take at least 20 min. to be filled. Don't think it will be around much longer - don't waste your time and money. Sad. read more

Came to this Applebees for the first time my meal was brought to me I order the lime fiesta chicken, the rice was hard and circled shaped n the form of a bowl the rice did not and I repeat did not break it's form i literally picked it up off my plate like it was a bowl.. the chicken was undercooked and rubbery and my silverware came to me dirty aswell definitely will not return very upsetting visit. read more

This applebee's was the worst one we have ever visited. We were not greeted promptly even though only a couple tables had customers and half the staff was standing around talking. Once seated we had to wait even longer to get service. I did try the new quesadilla chicken salad and would try again. I just really feel bad for this business owner to see so many staff available and not doing anything. If the waitress hadn't been friendly we probably would have left, but when she came around she was super nice. If in this area, next time I'll try another place. read more

Inwant to first than our server Jason who was great. He anticipated our needs and kept a close check up on us at all times. His service alone warranted a 5 star rating. I had a classic bacon cheeseburger with fries. I remember a time when food was so much better at Applebee's. My burger came out and was as I had ordered and fries, though unsalted, we good. Not great. Serving was smaller than I remembered. My son opted for cheese sticks - standard US Food service truck line item. My wife had the Bourbon street chicken and mashed potatoes - looked okay. The shrimp that came with it were cold - seasoning was sufficient. It was correctly served and server was great but food was "meh." I'm not sure what happened to the WOW that Applebee's once had but it seems to have died hard. I left feeling cheated knowing they were my favorite place to eat at one time. But its not a location problem - its a brand problem. I sincerely hope they find their soul and passion again soon. read more

Unfortunately this Salem restaurant is the absolute worst!!! Service is horrible and the food that normally is great is the worst. My final attempt to do another call curbside order was a disaster!! I did the app order as I had a number of times! I had orders 3 entrées, one being a strawberry chicken salad! That alone was 14.00 so my total bill was well over 45 bucks with a 20 tip!! I pulled up called and spoke with Sabrina she delivered my order and I proceeded to drive the 35 min back to my house. My family set the table and as I opened my salad surprise. No chicken!! Called Sabrina and told her about it, she giggled and asked if I could drive back and get another salad!!! Are you kidding. No offer to refund or anything else. We were seated at the big booth in the corner, off to the right of the front entrance. The seat was nauseatingly filthy ... A grotesque shriveled-up lemon wedge, a dried up piece of brown bread, straw wrappers shoved down in the cracks of the seat cushions ... disgusting! The food was actually delicious, but I couldn't help wondering "If the seating area looks like this, what does the kitchen look like?". The men's restroom was clean. Relatively speaking, it was certainly cleaner than the dining room, but I'm not suggesting you eat in there. My favorite waiter, Ryan, was working, but my waitress was good. read more

They usually knock things out of the ballpark, but today they really struck out. It was well after lunchtime when we decided to stop and grab a bite to eat before we returned home. We and at least 2 other parties of people had to wait for several minutes before anyone approached the host stand --yes, they were busy and we were rather patient and willing to wait since we have always had a good experience here. We got seated and more than enough time to browse the menu before the waitress even arrived at our table to take our orders. Things were slow coming out of the kitchen and getting drink refills was even slower --can you put a waitress on a milk carton, asking for a friend. The rice on my plate was dry, hard and in clumps --as if it had been sitting for some time before landing on my plate. I love you Applebee's and I know that you can do better! I am more than willing to drive all the way to Salem to enjoy your tasty food, it's my go-to place when in Salem. But today I was rather disappointed. read more

It has gone downhill over the years. First clue - it used to be that you had to wait in line to get a seat; apparently not any more. My wife grumbled when I suggested we eat there - and after our meal Mar. 2 she won't go back. She ordered wings - while not 'dry', the meat certainly wasn't moist. The waitress asked if she wanted the wings tossed in the sauce or the sauce on the side - she asked for tossed, however when the plate came the sauce was 'glopped' in the middle of the wings - they weren't coated like they would have been if tossed. My order was OK, but there was a small error that wasn't worth correcting. As indicated, this restaurant has gone downhill - I remember when it was much better. Did you ever have one of those days where you're trying to outrun a lousy headache, had a challenging day at work, try to ignor the symptoms of earache and all you want to do is have some comfort food? Well, that's me today as I wandered into Applebee's in Salem. Imagine my chagrin as I walked into a gulag- like atmosphere because of the darkness only to be seated in the corner of the restaurant beneath an annoying flickering light... I felt like I was teeing up to have a seizure or was going to interrogated and water boarded. I ordered my usual - three cheese chicken penne and some mozzarella sticks for an appetizer, appetizer being the operative word here. I'm waiting for the mozzarella sticks to come out so I can focus on eating and this flickering light that threatens to do me in at any moment- just how long do mozzarella sticks take to make? Did my server quit? And as long as I'm on a roll, am I the only person on the planet who is highly offended when a server or hostess refers to me as a guy? "Hi guys!" and "how are you guys tonight?" Unfortunately Applebee's does not hold an exclusive one this one. Is there not another way to casually address a group of people? I bet there is. Where are my mozzarella sticks? Are they aging the cheese in the back room? Several more minutes of punishment pass. Between the flickering light and the insipid music blaring from the speakers above, I think I feel I'm slipping into a semi-conscious state. Someone please tell my husband I love him.... Wait! Can it be? My server approaches....and sets down both the appetizer AND the entree at the same time. Consciousnesses slowly muscles it's way forward and forces me to eat, lucious mozzarella sticks and my penne, which was equally as good. A nice finish to a very rocky experience at a far too familiar establishment like Applebee's. The food was good and predictable, but the housekeeping issues like the $?@$& flickering light, sticky tables, and the New Age music they insist on playing made for not such a pleasurable dining experience. I'll be back, but no time soon. Maybe the next time I'll wear dark glasses and bring my own music. read more

Stop in for a quick dinner while traveling solo, had the chicken and shrimp bourbon street. Food was order and at the table in 10 minutes (Thursday night however) they had me in and out fast and back in the road. My wife and I have always been a fan of Applebee's. We ate here while staying in Salem and I had the fish/chips which I can say was very good and my wife had a steak which whe ordered medium rare-when it arrived it was well done and it had to be sent back. When she got it it was just an "OK" steak, nothing to brag about and I would have used A-1 or some other steak sauce on it myself. The cocktails were good, - nothing great. The waitress who I can't remember her name was great, she was very upbeat and professional. We asked to see the manager and told her what a great job the girl was doing. We also left a 25% tip based on the waitress. We will go back again when in town I'm sure. read more

Let me start by saying they got a 1 because that's the minimum. If I could I would give them a 0 or a negative star value. "See you tomorrow"--- thats their new ad campaign. It should be "You will never see me again." The food we received was incredibly sub par. I ordered the Peppercorn-crusted sirloin with whole grains mostly based on the amazing menu photo. What O actually received had ABSOLUTELY NO RESEMBLANCE to that picture! I have uploaded a comparison for you to be the judge. I should have sent this disgusting dish back but I was hungry and hoped the flavor was at least edible. Nope! Everything on the salad was ICE cold and the steak tasted like Applebees approach to seasoning is dump as much salt in it an hope it turns out. It was charred poorly and had the taste of a leathery shoe. I will NEVER return to Applebees! If you want to "Eat great in the neighborhood," --go somewhere else! The restaurant was not busy. There was no wait or line to be seated. Hostess was pleasant got seated right away. Server took like 15 minutes to take our order. We opted for the highly advertised all you can eat shrimp, riblets, and chicken strips. We also ordered drinks. Everyone around us was complaining about not getting their food served. We finally each got a plate of food after 45 minutes one plate of 10 shrimp with fries, and a plate of 6 riblets with fries. We reordered 5 minutes later. 45 minutes later two plates came. One with 5 shrimp and one with 3 riblets. I told the waitress that was ridiculous. She said replacement orders had to be 1/2 portions so as not to waste food. I told her to please bring a normal plate so I did not have to reorder every 2 minutes for all you can eat! 30 minutes later she brought out 2 plates of 5 shrimp each. The waitress was apologetic to us and the customers around us. We tipped 15% because we felt sorry for her. It also took forever to get our drinks. 2 hours after arrival I had recieved 20 shrimp and 2 drinks. All you can eat is a myth at this place. I would have had to spend the day there just to get served a normal portion. My father and I have been customers here for years but it has deteriorated to the point neither of us plan to go back. If this is there best they deserve to close. There are many other establishments close by that are cheaper, have better food and much better service. My advice go somewhere else in the neighborhood. Totally disappointed. We felt like we had been robbed. Not worth $70 dollars for what we got! Management must be out to lunch or on vacation at this place. read more

This is your typical Applebee's located on Busy West Main Street. I usually have lunch here a couple of times a month and have always been impressed with the staff, who is always friendly. The food is well prepared and is promptly served when it comes out of the kitchen. The Lunch Special are always a good choice and reasonably priced. If you are in a hurry or have limit time they are quickly served. I haven't experienced this Applebee's for dinner, but lunch is a very good option for me. The restaurant is very clean and appears to be well managed, the food is good and the employees have good customer service skills. read more

If I could give a "0" I would. 4 minths ago, took forever for carside to go. Last week, SAME PROBLEM. Took 20 minutes to prepare fod, told ready in 10 minutes. (No cooking required). Called mgmt, was told GM would call. Mgr said would send gift card for next visit. Did not receive card or call from GM. Careside customers helped last. Paying inside customers come first. Server was nice & helpful, but when asked for more lemon for tea she brought back two paper thin slivers (give me a break!). I had a new item on the menu - pepper crusted sirloin steak over granular vegetables. To my surprise it was good. Meat was tasty & tender & the vegetables were a good mix of greens, small peas, & mushrooms. Another bonus was it was a low calorie meal! I would order again. My wife had fried shrimp which the server said was good. It's obvious she doesn't know good fried shrimp. I can go to any grocery store & buy the same frozen shrimp & fry it myself for a lot less. Nice employees. Food had to be sent back and was still not adequate. Service was a bit slow as well. French fries were cooked well. Drinks were nice and cold. I enjoyed the mango tea. Service is awful at this place. We were there on a Thursday evening and they were not very busy. It took 45 min. to get our food and the server never refilled our drinks. I had to get up and go to the bar to get my water refilled. The hamburger I had ordered was RAW. Did not eat it and did not pay for our meals. Just walked out. This was easily the worst restaurant I have ever been too. If I had my choice I would not even give this so called restaurant one star. The hostess was unbelievably rude. Between dirty looks, and muffled comments as we started to walk away, she was unnecessary. The music is loud, and if you wish to talk to one of the waiters about a birthday they will most likely ignore you. The food was terrible and easily over cooked. Sat at the bar a couple days ago and had an appetizer and a beer. Pretty decent. My bartender was Jenna and she was really nice and attentive. However, I thought it was incredibly unprofessional that the general manager stood behind the bar loudly talking politics with other bar guests. As a former bar owner myself I know that politics and religion have no place at the bar. There were other people that looked visibly uncomfortable. I was going to ask to speak with him but changed my mind, he didn't seem like the type who would take constructive criticism well with the way he was yelling "bullshit!" behind the bar.
