Verified Untappd venue (iykyk), with what seems like endless taps and an even more impressive selection of cans/bottles. Bartenders are pretty damn knowledgeable about the product as well, which as a beer nerd is perfect. The food is fantastic. From appetizers (the fried vegetables are heaven) to entrees, it's the perfect amalgamation of classic bar food and Indian cuisine. Today when I was in I had the Taphouse (Lamb) Burger with fries and a side of their Makhani sauce (Pic attached). If a place has a lamb burger it's my immediate go to every time, and I have to say Taphouse has the best I've ever had. The lamb was cooked and seasoned perfectly, the vegetables were fresh, and that feta is that perfect accompaniment to round it off. The Makhani sauce is just good on everything. Could drink it. Not kidding. The venue offers a welcoming outdoor area and a semi-private indoor space perfect for events. I've booked Taphouse for both corporate and personal gatherings, and it's the easiest, most reliable spot in the County for hosting by far. Beyond the food and drink, Taphouse, and especially Sunny (the owner) are one of the most community engaged businesses in Southern Maryland. They have put on countless events supporting all types of local organizations, and always work with nonprofits when they need anything. Taphouse and Sunny himself really serve as one of the best ambassadors of St. Mary's County, especially since a large portion of the customers are transient. "What are you talking about, Sam? Explain yourself!" "Stands t' reason, ever since we've known her, Dani's had a special fear of a spirit bear she said murdered her parents. None of us really really gave the story much credit, after all who believes in magic?" Sam paused oh so slightly before continuing. "Illyana tells me Dani spent the last week or so in the Danger Room fighting bears! T'night, she walked out into a [winter] storm, alone, armed with a bow an' arrows an' wearing war paint! And got mauled. We were wrong t' doubt her. We should'a listened, we should'a seen the signs." Whenever my wife and I visit a restaurant or bar for the first time, whether we are there by ourselves or--in this case--treated to a meal by our favorite neighbors--I can count on her to sort through, heed, and pick up on every nuance in every aspect of culinary service that is there to be sensed. In this case, at the Dockside Restaurant & Sports Bar at 421 Deale Road in Maryland, the food was mostly wonderful, and the prices were more than reasonable for this economy. What prevents Dockside from receiving at least four stars was primarily the service. Two orders of fries, one sweet potato and one regular, weren't hot; and although our waitress reluctantly brought one of the orders back to exchange it for a new batch, the fries didn't taste any warmer. Our other host ordered his crabcake lightly-fried, only for it to be brought out broiled. He still enjoyed it, but it wasn't exactly what he wanted or ordered. By the end of the meal, it became obvious that, if we return, we need to ask for Sarah, who, although she was tending the bar and wasn't even our waitress, still brought one of our neighbors a fresh cup of Pepsi Zero that she could take on our return trip home. Sarah also exhibited a great sense of humor, an attentiveness and an attention to detail, and, most importantly, remembered with pleasure our hosts, who have dined there frequently. Apart from the pumpkin cheesecake, which was so infused with nutmeg and pumpkin spice that even Linus from Peanuts couldn't have tasted the pumpkin, and the lukewarm fries, our meals were terrific. I devoured the perfectly-seasoned shrimp from the fried shrimp platter; everyone loved their onion rings and their cream of crab and Maryland crab soups; and we all agreed that the crabcakes, boiled and fried, were scrumptious.

I really appreciated that the bartender checked in on us a few times to ensure our food was fine and to see if we needed more refills. The vibe is really laid back, which was perfect after spending a few hours at the beach. The menu is more like comfort-style food with plenty of burger and sandwiches options. For our meals, we went with a crab cake sandwich and a fish sandwich, both of which included a side. I thought the food was pretty good, and I have no major or minor complaints. Also, I thought the crab cake had a decent amount of lump crab (for the price). It was interesting (in a good way) that the sweet potato fries had a bit of cinnamon and sugar. While the fries were a bit sweet for me, I did not find them to be overly sugary. Also, Big Bats Cafe has plenty of speciality cocktails include an assortment of Crushes. We pulled up to this very pleasant looking building with some dogs painted on it. We walked in and it was just this nice place with pool tables, some tables to sit at and of course a bar. They were meaty, and the sauce was sticking to the wing, not laying all over the basket. Very impressed with the taste. Our veggie crab soup was so tasty, and where restaurants usually over-salt, this one was perfect. Then there were the crab cakes with a tad of our no-no Canola mayo, we succumbed because it was mostly amazing lump crabmeat. It's our rule and ours to break! My lump crabmeat appetizer was layered with avocado and mango with wasabi drizzle and was outstanding. I want it every day! I'm not kidding. Even my small garden salad with balsamic and olive oil on the side was fresh and garden good. Our server Craig listened, reported answers to all of our oil questions, and even brought me warmed rolls since I wouldn't go so far as eating crackers which were likely laced with "vegetable" oil. It IS our rule, and we can't break it for crackers. Our second night Rodger cheerfully served us, even introducing Chef Jeff, who assured me no veggie oils and all butter. His rockfish Imperial featured tender fish topped with crabmeat and his amazing all-butter remoulade with sides of creamy garlic mash and asparagus. So good I can't see why there isn't a wait line to enjoy this very caring gifted chef's culinary delights. The disco and pop rock offered enhanced ambiance and we were even tempted to do Al fresco patio seating but stayed comfy in our booth Dinner 3, why not, it's that good, was the creamy crab soup (a bit salty), and the oysters Rockefeller, which I last had at Bookbinders in Philadelphia. Chef Jeff did it again and surpassed my expectations, making these less salty than some--maybe still a tad too salty, but cut by a generous wedge of lemon. And speaking of generous, FIVE oysters filled to the top with spinach and buttered breadcrumbs. Rodger again was superb serving with attentiveness. On this visit, we sat at the bar to watch the playoff game. The bar had only a handful of guests, yet we waited nearly 15 minutes before being acknowledged. The bartender walked past us twice without making eye contact or offering so much as a greeting. Eventually, I had to raise my hand to get his attention. The food was equally underwhelming. The pub chips were neither crisp nor tender--just bland, thin potato rounds were lukewarm warm if that virtually no seasoning or texture, resembling cardboard more than a house-made side. My friend ordered the Buffalo chicken sandwich, and the chicken lacked flavor entirely the coleslaw competed with the buffalo sauce . The roll was hard, dry, and difficult to eat. The one bright spot was the crab and artichoke dip, which was tasty and well-prepared. What ultimately soured the evening, however, was the lack of hospitality. We originally came for the game and dessert and decided to stay for dinner. After our meal, I requested a dessert menu. The bartender handed me one and then casually informed me that the kitchen had already closed. There was no apology, no effort to accommodate us, and no prior warning that the kitchen would be closing. Had we been informed while ordering dinner, we would have happily ordered dessert at the same time. Instead, we were left looking at a menu for items that were no longer available. Good hospitality is about anticipation and communication. Telling paying guests after the fact that they can no longer order dessert because the kitchen has closed reflects a lack of attentiveness and customer care. Four visits were enough. There are too many restaurants that value both food quality and guest experience for me to give this one a fifth chance.

It took quite a while for someone to answer, but I eventually placed the order and went inside to pick it up. While I stood there waiting, five or six employees walked past me as though I were invisible. Not one person greeted me, acknowledged me, or asked if I needed assistance. Finally, an employee who had already walked past me twice asked, "May I help you?" I explained what had happened and asked to speak with a manager. After telling the manager that multiple employees had ignored me, I informed him that I would be writing a review. His only response was, "Okay." No apology, no concern, and no attempt to address the problem. The employees' behavior was rude, but the manager's complete indifference made the experience even worse. When management is this dismissive, it is easy to understand why the staff believes ignoring customers is acceptable. Maggiano's promotes hospitality, but there was absolutely nothing hospitable about this experience.
