A bunch of us went to Apis for a friend's birthday. There's a pretty spacious inside along with a large outside area with a small fire pit. You order at the bar and they have an extensive menu. As a fair warning, if mead is not your thing you probably won't love it here. Otherwise, it's great! If you can't choose from their large selection they have a mead flight option. I thought that their pricing was very reasonable. I visited Apis for the first time a couple weeks ago, and was so pleasantly surprised. Who knew the nation's third highest-selling meadery is in Carnegie, and that they ship bottles to 41 states across the country! The amount of different flavors shocked me. Jabanero strawberry and blueberry cheesecake are a couple that I remember the best. I'd recommend a sampler tray on your first visit, so you can test out a few before your commit. The bar service was attentive and the server was very helpful! I was lucky to connect with the owner, Dave, while there that night, too. He ensured that everything was running smoothly and that we were all satisfied. If you're in the mood for video games or board games, this is the place for you! The ambiance is relaxed... you're on your own time. Nobody is going to rush you out the door. I can't believe I didn't know this existed! The servers were so friendly! We got a flight and it was everything a millennial who wants an experience in being transported to Flavortown could ask for. After hearing rave reviews from friends, I met up with one of those friends at Apis to catch up. To complement my dinner from Cafe Delhi across the street (separate review for them on their page), I got a flight of the Blueberry Chai, Blueberry Cobbler, Sleepover, Knotweed Honey and Lemon Bourbon Meads. The flavor notes were amazing and literally everything in my flight was great. The "Sleepover" is a hidden gem for sure, a peanut butter mead that has notes of a peanut butter and honey sandwich with and undercurrent of jelly. So good! I'll be back for sure. Loved this space! It is located in a very convenient location in Carnegie. We were the only patrons there, but it is expected that patrons wear masks when walking around. I really love Apis Mead. What a great addition to the little town of Carnegie! Once a ghost town, turned into a bustling stretch of small local owned shops, eateries, and this great Meadery! Outside, there are fire pits, the weekend food trucks and games to play. Laid back, modern, somewhat hipster vibe, but also down to earth. I'm in love! I got to stop in at Apis a couple weekends ago, and what a treat it was. The atmosphere here is wonderful - the staff are welcoming, the tables and decor cute and cozy, and the collection of board games that live in the building make it easy to turn your night out with friends into a game night. Drinking games are optional, but hey, if you're going to play one... As if a great set-up wasn't delightful enough, the drink options here are fantastic. You can buy cups or full bottles of mead here; but if you're not sure what to get, you can also order a couple "flights" - sample trays of six different meads. If you come in a large enough group, this strategy lets you easily taste most of the drinks offered here in one visit. Case in point: my group ordered and shared a number of flights, so I was able to sample most of the menu during my visit. Personally, I found the fruit based meads to be the best, but I tend to like and/or dry beverages, so that's just as much my taste talking as the brew. Although no one at our table liked the coffee-infused drink...but I think that was the biggest and one of the only disappointments at the table. Out of all the flavors I tried, I recommend the apricot peach the most. If you like either of those fruits, this drink is a must - it's utterly delightful. I would absolutely spend some time here with friends again in the future. You're allowed to bring your own meals here, so during my last visit a different group of people was actually hosting a potluck. I'm thinking of bringing a pizza with me next time...pizza and mead: oh yum! Add in the board games and you have a lovely night out, I'd say! P.S. I came here with my wife during second Fridays in Carnegie. This is a really cool event if you can find parking for it! I wish I would have known ahead of time that Apis allows dogs as I would have brought ours. The inside is kind of cool, mostly wood with a little bit of hipster vibe. They have a few different tables, high and low, as well as a standing bar and a plethora of board games in the back to break out. My wife and I ended up each doing a sample flight while playing connect four and checkers. We also ended up having a glass of the new tap, Sloe Torri, as well and bought 3 bottles to go. I haven't drank much mead in my life. It's mostly been from wineries who also make mead and not a meadery itself. With that being said, Apis has by far the smoothest mead! It wasn't thick and syrupy and it wasn't biting either. The flavors really shined as well. My favorites were peanut butter, mango habanero, and a green apple one. Very cool place with some great mead. I ended up spending way too much here but will be back to probably do the same thing. My husband and I came down here on a Carnegie Crawl night, where most restaurants and shops stay open late on the second Friday of the month. We have heard great things about it and knew there would be more going on in Carnegie than usual, so we decided to check it out! When you first walk into the building, it is dimly lit, with a few booths and high tops for seating. A long sit up bar was against one wall. The first thing I noticed was a couple sitting in a booth playing a game! I knew I liked this place already as there were several games to choose from to play with the people you come with. We walked up to the small counter and decided to each get a sampler - since my husband and I have different tastes and we wanted to try multiple flavors, this made the most sense. Plus we were able to try a total of 10 different flavors which was awesome and made it easy to eliminate which flavors we may enjoy enough to take home at the end of the evening. One of the employees to the time to describe every flavor on the menu which was very helpful when deciding what to get. I ended up enjoying the Pomegranate Rose and the Dorsata the best although I can't say I disliked any of them! The Mango Habanero stood out because it truly began with the mango flavor with a nice kick at the end - naturally one of my husband's favorites! Because it was a Carnegie Crawl night and the meadery does not serve food, we were able to order from a food truck and bring it into the building to enjoy while we sipped on our drinks and played games. My husband and I stopped by while picking up or lunch from a restaurant nearby. They let us sample several different meads, even after we had decided on what we were purchasing. The server was knowledgeable and helped us try several varieties that were all very good in their own unique ways. Looking forward to going back and trying more sometime. What an awesome Friday night spot! This meadery is a small (very very small) cozy spot to have drinks with friends or a fun date night - it is enjoyed by locals and out-of-towners. Every Friday night they have live music and a food truck right outside to give you some local food to munch on while enjoying your evening. They have about 10 mead options on rotation: you can buy a glass, a sample flight, or a bottle. My favorite is the Sangria drink and I also enjoyed the lavender mead. I would suggest a sample flight if you've never had mead before so you can decide on a favorite. Also, they have a wall of board games and group games- we like to grab the Cards Against Humanity or Scrabble depending on the size of our group that night! A great place to hang out with some great mead and board games! There's always a lot of flavors to choose from, so their flight option (pick 5 meads for $15) is great for trying several types. I've tried most of their mead at this point, so I tend to go with the flight if a) bringing first time visitors or b) they've just released new seasonal flavors to try :) A couple of my favorites are the Blueberry Chai, Mango Habanero, Lemon Bourbon, and any of the "hopped" flavors. My friend turned me on to this place. We walked over after having a few drinks at Quantum Spirits. I know this is a review for Apis, but really, go to both places. You won't be disappointed. There's everything from the light and refreshing summer taste of Peach Apricot to the bold Sangiovese Dorsata, which has a more powerful and rich flavor. Dave is so sincere and ready to share the process of starting this business and the fine art of mead-making. We had a lovely time just chatting. I love the aesthetic of this location, too. They have mixed rustic and contemporary to make the space warm and inviting. Plenty of places to sit and relax, and you are encouraged to bring your own food to enjoy! I cannot wait to come back! Large variety of flavors, great tasting mead and awesome laid-back atmosphere. I've only had mead once before, which I fell in love with so I really wanted to try more. I read about Apis in an article and knew immediately that I had to stop here asap. The environment is really casual with a blackboard menu in the back. Its kind of like coffee shop meets a bar but not quite like a bar either; you just order at the counter and they pour it and bring it to your table. Since this was our first time here, my husband and I each ordered a Sampler Flight. There is a pre-selected flight variety and one you can create yourself, both $15 each. This is probably the best way to go so you can sample many of their flavors. Without going into the exact selections, my favorite was the Mellifera (their house mead) and my husband's favorite was the Raspberry Blackberry. The house mead is their basic mead with a strong honey flavor. The other flavors are the basic mead with extra herbs and/or fruits. They make everything in-house and you can see all the barrels in which they're stored. The atmosphere encourages you to take your time and stay a while because they have a large selection of games and books for you to play or read while you sip on your mead. After attending a play at the Off The Wall Theater, my girlfriend and I did as we always do when it's theater night for us in Carnegie, we stop and have a beer at Riley's then go across the street and visit Dave at the Apis Meadery. This place is such a welcome addition for the Pittsburgh libation indulging community. Dave, the brewer and owner, puts out a constantly good product. The meads even look pretty. The colors are bright and the mead is clear. But it's the flavors that will bring you back for more. Last Saturday I got a glass of the Blueberry Chai and a glass of the Hopped Passionfruit. My girl started with the Pomegranate Rose and finished off with a glass of the Cranberry Clove. Of course we sampled each other's too. All four were outstanding. There are a few places in Pittsburgh that carry Apis Meade on tap: The Brew Gentlemen in Braddock and Pipers Pub on the Southside are two establishments that come to mind. But what really makes the trip to East Main Street worthwhile is the atmosphere inside. I've noticed that every time I go there I end up having a pleasant conversation with a total stranger. I don't plan it or even try, it just happens. Another cool thing is that there are board games available that you can pull out and play with the crowd that you're with at one of the tables if the mood strikes. This place is a gem I've had two flights of different combos and enjoyed everything but you can't beat the original of course!

Once again, the Pittsburgh alcohol craft scene surprises me with a meadery that went above and beyond my expectations. Every time I go to one of these places, I meet passionate, kind brewers who are all part of a supportive community: everyone speaks highly of the other brewers. The mead flavors are unique: strawberry kiwi, hopped passionfruit (which gave a tropical vibe from the lychee-like flavors of the hops), blueberry chai, pina colada, etc. The flavors were pronounced and vibrant. My favorite was the hopped passionfruit. Flights are $15 bucks. Alcohol content ranges from 9%-15%. In addition to the fantastic mead, there is a gigantic wall with an assortment of board games, card games, and books. So while we drank, we were able to play an awkward game of miniature pool. We laughed and had a memorable time. This game wall totally brought the place from being awesome to awesome-er. I had a great time. Good drinks and a fun atmosphere. I have been a longtime and loyal customer to Apis. The mead and other drinks they offer are really good, the atmosphere is relaxing and fun, and the game selection never disappoints. Pricing is pretty fair as well. I recommend the flight of mead if you go because it allows you to try all of their unique flavors. Every time I go, there are usually one or two new flavors to try. Overall, I highly recommend this establishment for a night out with friends, ladies night, date night, or birthday. All of that being said, I would have happily given a 5-star review if it weren't for my last couple of recent experiences at the new location. My experience was a little tarnished both times by one employee in particular. The first of these experiences was about a month ago when I was asking questions about the mead flavors I hadn't tried. The male employee made me feel like it was a chore to talk to me and answer my questions, which was annoying from a customer standpoint. Each time I went up for a refill, he wasn't very friendly which was unusual for this business and it's employees. Then fast-forward to this past weekend. It was my best friend's birthday and we had a group of 10 people walking around Carnegie to check out all of the cool locations. A lot of the people with us had never been to Apis and I was was raving about how good it was. We get there and the same male employee with glasses, a Pittsburgh Pirates hat, and goatee waited on us. My friend asked for recommendations on the most popular mead flavors. She asked for a sample of one before committing to a glass and found the one she tasted to be more sweet than what she was looking for in that moment. She asked to sample one other flavor she had her eye on. This bartender wouldn't allow her to and asked her to make a selection in a really rude tone. A few minutes later a few of us had decided we all wanted to the same kind and opted to get a bottle to split of that particular flavor in addition to a couple of us wanting a second glass of another kind. I hadn't tried to buy an entire bottle since Apis was in the old location, and I was unaware that they stopped providing that service to open a bottle in the store space to have. This same employee sternly told me that "that hadn't been a thing since they moved to the new location." I nodded and relayed to my friend that we couldn't split the bottle there and added that it was a good value when you could at the old location. Even though I wasn't talking to this employee, he felt the need to chime in and say "Well WE like to make money, too!" in a very unapologetic way. Needless to say after that, we had our one drink pretty quickly - some of us didn't even order - and left. I was really disappointed by the experience and even more disappointed that we didn't stay longer to help support - what I have always known as a very friendly place to go hang out. I'm really hoping my next experience there is better than the last two have been. If management is seeing this and looking for ways to improve the business, it may be a good idea to revisit hospitality and customer service staples with certain employees. read more

If you enjoy wine or craft beer, you must try mead! It's a classy and delicious way to enjoy your alcohol and get buzzed, and Apis Mead is a great place to imbibe it. The ambiance is classy, service is friendly, and the mead is delicious! Before I came here, I'd never tried mead before, but now I'm totally hooked. In order to try as many flavors and versions as possible, I ordered the sampler, which I'd recommend to anyone unfamiliar with mead. It came with six types of mead, ordered by alcohol content/strength: Peach apricot, melliflora, blackberry-raspberry, tangerine-ginger, blueberry-chai, and cranberry. Quite frankly, I found all of them delicious, to the point that I had difficulty deciding which one was my favorite! My friends, who came with me, ordered samplers of the remaining types of mead not included in the sampler (florea, dorsata, and sangiovese), and I ended up liking the dorsata best, which I never would have guessed! It was complex--both dry and semi-sweet at once, with a distinct honey-like flavor that I loved. My other favorites were the florea and blackberry-raspberry, so if I return (which I'm sure I will), I'll be sure to order a bottle of one of those next time! Just to be clear, the flavored meads were each based on one of the basic meads (florea, melliflora, or dorsata). In my opinion, the melliflora was the least distinctive (it tasted like a standard chardonnay to me), which surprised me, since I thought this was the version I'd like best. Having said that, I think the flavors added to this version the most, since the flavored meads based on it were my favorites. Aside from the mead itself, I was very favorably impressed with the service and ambience. Since we came relatively early, we called ahead and asked if we could bring in some food (so we had something to absorb the alcohol), and the owner, Dave, said it was fine, since they don't offer any food aside from cheese and crackers. So, we hit up Don-Don Chinese next door, and enjoyed some General Tso's chicken with our mead. I'd highly recommend Apis Mead to anyone who hasn't tried mead before, as well as to seasoned mead aficionados. Based on my experience, I'm sure I'll be back soon--I'm hooked! read more

Mead, Norse mythology tells us the poet Mead drank the wine and was suddenly the Einstein of his time. I was unaware of Mead but decided to have my first here at Apis.... In Carnegie of all places. It's very neutral and inviting inside. A nice sit down environment to enjoy tingling your taste buds and chatting with friends. It looks restaurant like but only cheese and crackers are served so don't come looking for food. The wines range from 7% to 14% alcohol they can be a traditional flavoring which is a tad more bitter and dry. Or meads which are brewed for shorter periods may have fruit flavors or even grape added. I tried the blackberry-raspberry mead and apricot peach. I was looking to stick with lower alcohol content. Both were light and delicious. But I taste tested the dryer meads and they reminded more of champagnes and whit dry wines. Still nice but a different feel on the tongue. You can buy by the bottle glass, or after doing my research drop in and have bottles filled. The owner was a penn brewery employee branching off and doing this now. So great to see this addition. Pricing was decent, honestly not anymore then you'd be paying for a half glass of box wine or cheap bottle wine at a restaurant. It all depends what kind of experience you're up for. This is a fun spot and the staff is friendly. While the operation is small now I'm looking forward to when they move and expand. I think the passion for what they are doing is apparent and it makes for a great experience. Things stay fresh as they are working on new flavors all the time and they seem to keep in mind seasonality concerning ingredients. The interior is also spot on. It has a hip feel and is a comfortable setting. I like that they offer glasses and bottles for most of their drinks. Altogether I like how simple and good this place is. read more

My first visit to Apis was for a Beer Share, but I was definitely impressed by Apis itself and will be back. Warm inviting hip little place that is BYOF(ood). The meads are really good, especially their coffee mead, holy cold brew was it good! Friendly staff and cool artwork seal the deal. read more
