Wow, I have been coming here for six plus years! I was informed by the employee, that this cute like cidery/ meadery has been open for at least nine years. How time flies.....Its has been wonderful to see this location grow with the diversity of their offerings and the quality of their products. I am a traditionist with it comes to ciders so I like it dry and apply forward- but I branched out this time, at the suggestion of the employee, and was surprised to find out that I can enjoy mead and Kombucha just as much. At Apiary, they offered some non sweet mead and Kombucha drinks. The flavors of the offering were spot on and not fake tasting due to the natural ingredients. I am a carp local and I absolutely love coming to the apiary. The drinks are really good always changing in a good way. The bartenders are always really nice and happy. It's really comfortable and I love the ambiance of the place. Also there is a empanada place close by and often a yummy Thai food truck with super nice people. I'll write a separate review for both food spots. Great place if you have kids also they have e a back alley that cars don't drive through and connects a brewery and the empanada place. The staff was so nice and went over the flavors of the drinks and his recommendation. The flight was $22 for six very generous pours. My friend and I each got a flight but we could've shared one. This place was amazing! The girl working was so nice and helpful and knowledgable. The decor is super cute and relaxing. They have plenty of seating inside and outside. We came after a storm on a weekday so it was fairly empty which we didnt mind at all. We tried a flight to get a better feel for all the meads, ciders and kombucha. We got the: Darkest Flower 4/5 Wild FLower 4/5 Self Care 5/5 Under the Sun 4/5 and two others I cant remember. The one memorable one was a cider I think that tasted like sake we didnt like but everything else was amazing. I ended up buying a growler of Self Care to take home and all their packaging is so cute I am definitely reusing it for a water bottle. I am back home and out of the dozen or so breweries and tap rooms we stopped during our road trip this was my favorite. All hail The Apiary! If you've ever wanted to try mead, this is the place! With the guidance of Sir Miles, I sampled a few varieties. Both were delicious and had a fragrant aroma. I went with a few Darkest Flower/Avocado Blossom, and enjoyed them back in my hotel room by the sea. They have other "botanical beverages" (including cider and hard kombucha) here also, and you can hang out and interact in a patio area in the back. Mead- the most underrated alcoholic beverage on the planet and one of my faves. This "drink of the Gods" can be misunderstood as being cloyingly sweet when in fact it can be anything but. If you haven't tried it yet, The Apiary is a great place to get a $22 flight. Plus, they're one of the few places that also offer alcoholic kombucha. I had a great time trying a combination of their classical meads, botanical meads, ciders, and hard kombuchas (jun). It was also my first time trying alcoholic kombucha and I think I liked it better than the store-bought non-alcoholic kinds. To my surprise, I liked the elderberry echinacea jun the best out of everything we tried in our flight. Of the meads, I liked the Gold Rush and Beespoke. Okay let me try my hardest to explain mead: Mead can be dry A little bit sweet Or cloyingly sweet as FUCK Mead can be bitter and hoppy like an IPA Mead can be still Mead can be carbonated Mead can be heavy, sweet and thick Or light/crisp/dry Mead can be super fruity And mead can vary based on the type of honey/flowers/herbs/botanicals you use And the mead here...It's all very good, but most of it had very similar flavor profiles instead of the diversity I was seeking. And though I LOVE dry and I LOVE floral/botanical flavors to my drinks, I feel that they could have flexed their muscles more to be diverse with the potential combinations of mead. Let's do some super sweets and some semi-sweets. Let's do some still ones with no hops/no carbonation. Some thick ones. Let's have more of the rainbow Flex your mead muscles and do it all. Let each mead be an individual. I want the tasting menu to feel like a progression of flavor...however you want that progression to be. But it seemed like more of swimming in the same pool. I first tried Apiary mead (Drink your Flowers) at Third Window brewing in SB and loved it so much so I knew I had to come for a visit. Since COVID, they have expanded their space into a nice little patio outside in the back, which is a great spot to have a drink. They have new meads and kombuchas often, especially in different seasons, and I love going to get a flight and try the different ones they have that day. You can also get some to go from their fridge! They're a small family business, and I really loved supporting them through the pandemic. Their drinks are a little pricier than just a beer but it's worth it. My favorite is definitely the Elderberry Echinacea- it's so good. Honeys and apples and oranges, oh my! As soon as I took my first few sips I was transported to a scene in the animated woods with friendly fawns prancing through the tall grass and birds singing songs as they flutter around in the cool Spring breeze. Yes, tasting at the Apiary is like the end of the Splash Mountain ride when all the critters are singing Yip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah and a wave of happiness flows through your soul. I visited this adorable tasting room for the first time this evening and kicked myself for not making the effort to come sooner. Friends, it's amazing. The second I walked in someone greeted me with a smile, the manager was playing beautiful piano tunes in the background, and the all customers were smiling and laughing. I kid you not, I had entered a Utopia. After being told the difference between meads and ciders (honey and apple bases) I decided to order a flight of all Meads and one cider, the Heirloom Wild which is made with 100% Organic pippin and golden russet apples. I can honestly tell you there was not one flavor I did not like. Yes the Jun was a little on the light side and the Lemon Farm was slightly more bitter than the others, but they all had their own unique and delicious touch to them. My favorites, and the ones I will be back for in the very near future, were the Echinacea and the Centennial Sage meads. Both had very unique flavor as you sipped and left you with a soft and sweet honey flavored after taste that makes you smile feeling refreshed and enlightened. I also would love to try the empanadas they sell via food cart and maybe visit for some like folk music sometime. Great spot, ample amounts of parking in front and back, right off the freeway if you're coming south from SB, right next door to a craft beer spot (Brewlab) and a chocolate shop (Chocolats du Calibressan), inviting environment with genuine heartfelt service, and a nice open area in the back to chat with friends in the wonderful Carpinteria sun. Been meaning to try this place out. So glad I did. Mead is a fairly new concept to me and I'd only ever tried it once before. The variation I'd tasted had come out of a can and just wasn't that great. A friend of mine raved about the mead served here so naturally had to give 'em a go. Apiary is located in a Carp warehouse suite which has completely been transformed to a cozy, uniquely-decorated oasis. It feels like a neat old home with the eclectic kitsch and there were a number of seating options. I ordered the Drink Your Flowers flavor and I've gotta say, this place has won me over. It had a complex flavor structure and was so refreshing on the warm afternoon I was there. Their patio was the perfect sunny spot to enjoy the beverage. I don't have mead often and since I was in the area, I wanted to give this place a try for their meads. They are locally made (as I'm told) and offer a classical mead as well as experimental meads with botanical flavors. Aside from meads, they have Jun Hard Kombucha and ciders. There were two specialties on draft, but we didn't get them in the end as we ended up getting a flight of six to taste. In total, we got gold rush (beespoke was out), dark n dandy on nitro, drink your flowers jun, pink lady, royale, and darkest flower. The two I liked the most was gold rush and dark n dandy on nitro. Gold rush was very easy to go down and subtly sweet due to the vanilla and honey it has. The dark n dandy was nice, because it has a strong honey taste to it (perhaps the caramelization part?) and I'm a sucker for anything nitro. Even my partner, who doesn't like nitro or any dark beers, was okay with this drink. The rest was kind of ambivalent or downright I won't try again either because 1) nothing special or similar to another one or 2) not to my preference. The drink your flowers was not to my preference as the botanical taste is very strong. Definitely up to one's preference on that one. The royale and pink lady weren't bad, but very similar to each other. Instead of a light and refreshing aftertaste, it was more on the dry side, which we were both okay with, but not amazed with. We were okay with the darkest flower, but gold rush beats it by miles in our opinion. While worth a try, I would stick with their meads more than cider or kombucha next time. While fun to try, I personally didn't see much amaze with trying out their cider or hard kombucha. In regards to the drinks, there are some variants that are worth a try. Majority of their drinks are on the dry side and very few are on the sweet side. Gold rush was the only one that resembled the closest to classic mead I've had elsewhere. These brewers are creative in creating new mead tastes and I'm glad they still offer something close to classic mead. However, I would drink mead for the purpose of something sweat instead of something hoppy or too dry - personal preference. Store-front-wise. It's a pretty small site with some parking around. I wouldn't say it's kids-friendly. Not much space for them to run around. If they go outside, it's a parking lot right outside, which can be dangerous for a child to run around in. They have other seating areas as well, which might be a reason why it's kids friendly. All in all, a good experience to have and I wouldn't mind giving them another try for other options. Perhaps beespoke will be available next time. Maybe I'll get a growler of Gold Rush if I anticipate a party at my house. Note 1: They have a few games you can play such as connect 4, guess who, and even find waldo. Note 2: we tried the Che empanada. While nice to have something to munch on, our empanadas were on the burnt side of things. The chimichurri sauce was nice, but the empanadas weren't on par. A bit on the dry side and while decent quantity, quality is a bit subpar. We had the criolla and portuguesa. The criolla's tri-tip was overly dried and overcooked. The Portuguesa's capers overpowered pretty much everything inside the empanada. Perhaps it is our selections or the rush of everyone ordering some empanadas as the same time. However, if I'm in the area, I would be hesitant to giving them a try again. read more

I feel completely left in the dark! It took me a year to finally venture out to Carpinteria for The Apiary after multiple invites. In part, it's probably because I'm not into beer. Yet, in retrospect, I now naïvely realize that this is a different ballgame all together: mead, jun and cider. All similar to cider but with the influence of local, organic Santa Barbara County honey and apples that are fermented in house. I've always thought mead was extremely sweet, yet their selection varies from dry to semi-sweet with moderate to higher alcohol content (1-8%). Many have botanical or herbal hints to add some funk or pizzazz. From the minute my crew walked in the door, I thought I was transported to Portland, Oregon. The decor is super rustic as if you are in a well-maintained farm shed or botanist's laboratory with flowers hanging to dry, canned items and plant anatomy posters. We immediately hit it off with the lovely Kristen. She is not only fun to chat with and a fellow Midwesterner, but also extremely knowledgeable. If you're a newbie like me, I recommend taking on the Sampler with 6 meads/ciders of your choice ($18). If you're driving or do not drink often, be sure to share it between two or three people since they're large pours. My go-to choices are the medicinal Curcumin (pronounces ker-cue-min; careful with the pronunciation or it can turn into a naughty sexual conversation really quickly), the tart Elderberry Echinecea Jun (similar to a kombucha) and well-balanced Pure Gold Cider (careful because it'll sneak up on you given its 8.8% alcohol content!). I consistently get the munchies when I drink alcohol. Thankfully there's the Pizza Phone to the rescue. A rotary phone (yes, one still exists and works!) with local pizza joints to dial your order in for delivery. The Apiary is BYOFood, yet they often have food trucks out back to completely satisfy your tastebuds. The Apiary is open 7 days a week, so there's no reason to not check it out. Just get a baby sitter since it's not ideal for kids given the small space. read more

I have wanted to come to Carpinteria and check out The Apiary for some time. I had heard the ciders and mead are good and was not disappointed with my own experience! The space is small but the selection of ciders, meads, and [alcoholic] kombucha is impressive. Between my wife and I, we liked pretty much liked everything. She was a fan of the kombuchas and ciders and I enjoyed the meads as well as the ciders. We had a flight and couldn't leave without trying a couple more bonus samples before we were satisfied. We also had to take a refillable growler of the 'Dark Cider of the Earth' to share with others back home. It is next door to a brewery, which I missed this time (really!) as we were enjoying The Apiary so much. The kids were thoroughly entertained by the word magnets on the metal wall, chalkboard, patron dogs, and some crafts we brought (long enough for us to enjoy a flight plus of tastings).
