Apericena is a classy and intimate wine bar. The decor is sleek and trendy, with a bit of a romantic vibe. They offer any kind of wine you could ever want - served by the glass or by the bottle. They even have a couple beer options if wine isn't your thing. We decided to get the wine flight with four pours, so that we could try a few different wines. We chose 2 whites and 2 reds and enjoyed them all! Some of the wine options are more pricey, but they also have more affordable options, too. There's truly something for every taste and every budget. The only down side is their hours. As other reviews have mentioned, they have strange hours that are very limited. I have long been awaiting trying Apericena since my friend moved to the area, and last night did not disappoint! We were there when they opened at 5 and were the only ones there. It was such a lovely experience. We started with wine flights. I did red and she did white. We both loved our respective flights, and then we ended the evening with a glass of Prosecco. We also ordered the signature charcuterie board and the Italian flatbread. I really enjoyed both of those, but they weren't as good as the wine. What I loved is that when we wanted to order dessert, although they don't offer dessert, they let us go grab from Everything Bundt Cakes and Duck Donuts (in the same plaza) and bring it back to the restaurant!! How fun. We will definitely be making this a new staple spot. read more

My wife and I have been looking for a good date spot in the South Hills, and we were so happy with Apericena for our date night! The ambiance is amazing...it's exactly what you'd want a wine bar to be. We did not feel at all like we were in the middle of the suburbs. We tried both of their featured wine flights and their signature charcuterie board. Every wine featured on the flights was approachable, with a nice variety. The charcuterie was just what we were looking for. As expected, it was not a cheap date. Apericena is wonderful! They have great selections, offer light food (the vegetable flatbread is very good), wine flights, wine by the glass and the bottle. Really enjoyed the patio. A waitress came out immediately with water and menu's. The inside and patio was full and it looked like only two wait staff so we expected slower service but when at a wine bar we prefer it to be slow and relaxed. Our waitress was great. She answered a few questions on a couple of wines and our wine came out in a short time. We asked her to come back when she had time and we would order some food. Once she returned, we ordered the signature charcuterie and she did tell us one of the cheeses had be changed. The other waitress delivered the food and refilled our water. When one of our glasses were empty, the second waitress stopped by to see if we wanted a refill. We decided to try different wine since the selection was large and why not! Shortly after our waitress stopped back and we told her of our order with the other waitress. Well in a few minutes our order arrived. At that point we decided to get the vegetable flatbread. Tonight I was at the wine bar for their Halloween event. My wife and I go regularly ever few weeks. But now things might change. The tall blonde that has waited on us several times In the past and is always fantastic, she was screamed and sworn at in front of many paying customers by an grown man. Who I assumed is the current manager. It made us physically uncomfortable. No matter the circumstance, that should have been dealt with in the back. Seeing a superior in this establishment treat a young girl like that is enough for us not to return. It was so bad, that after it happened some bar patrons seemed so angry they paid there tab and left in a haste. Shacking there heads in the process and saying stuff to the bar tender "That's not ok" etc. I hope the management gets there acted together and corrects this. Disgusting behavior. read more

I'm really struggling with this review, as I kind of love it, yet I always get frustrated with this place when I'm there. I love it because Apericena and its wine bar concept is a great addition to the area. Where there are nothing but chain restaurants, I really appreciate that Apericena offers something different. The space is intimate and well decorated. Wine selection is large, they have a full bar, and offer some light bites. However, every time I'm here, I always experience something slightly annoying with the service. The first time, our check was wrong, which was just frustrating because we only got two wines and they were exactly the same. We were charged two different prices. Ok, whatever. The second time, I ordered a dirty martini and I waited almost a half hour to get it! Not sure if they prioritize wine orders because they're easier to prepare or if they were short handed. Despite the shortcomings with service, I still see myself coming here often as it's the only of its kind in this area. And being only a few minutes from my house, it's easy to get to! I hope that with time, the service is perfected and their ratings improve. read more

Saturday was our first and last time here. The glasses smelled like dirty wash clothes. When we asked for our check, they gave it to us and we noticed it was wrong. They charged us $15 instead of the $9 drink we ordered (4 times) When we asked about it, the bartender got an attitude and said they were out of the $9 one. But no one told us that .... we asked her to fix it and she snatched the bill from my hand. She gave it back to us and was not pleasant at all. They seemed understaffed that night, we were barely paid any attention. We had to keep saying excuse me to order drinks. saturday, stop #5, apericena. i've been wanting to check these guys put since they opened. as it was stop #5, we were wearing thin, so we figured a quick glass of wine would revive us! besides, it was right across the street from whole foods! how convenient! the bar is nicely styled. nice, comfy seating. not a big place, but big enough. they have music certain nights. bathrooms were very nice. we looked over the menu. they have some snacks to eat, not a bad selection. wines, i really thought there'd be more to choose from, but decent enough. i ordered a glass of folie a deux zinfindel. tom got a glass of chateau la bourlee bordeaux. his was nice, but i like 'em thick & heavy, like molasses! i didn't notice, but tom said my glass came from an opened bottle that had an aerator. do you see where this is going? i took a sip, expecting sheer deliciousness. i got sheer disappointment! it had turned! in a wine bar! for $17! what a shame! we HAD considered going back. now, idk! we drank a little more & just left. we headed home. read more

Can be so much more when it's open! This place has the worst hours! It seems to be always closed. It doesn't open until 5 most night and it's closed some weeknights. When it is opened the staff is very nice and accommodating. They really know their stuff abt wine. Their charcuterie boards are very good as well. Apericena was still under its "soft opening" and only open for a few weeks, which allowed for some grace, but I was still a bit disappointed. I think first and foremost was the fact the kitchen was completely closed -- and they didn't even have cheese or charcuterie to offer. I originally spotted this place leaving Whole Foods, so I looked it up online to see they also had some light bites. I came in looking for wine and some light evening bites, but left disappointed and hungry -- heading to another restaurant at 10pm, when Apericena closed. (Which seems a bit too early of a closing time for a wine bar.) Again, soft opening... Second frustration was their lack of wine stock. I asked for a small tasting of their top Cab. While bringing out the tasting, the wait staff politely warned me that there was only a few glasses left before serving me a full glass. I really appreciated that, so I asked for their top Tempranillo instead. Only downside, this was also out of stock. All of my friends, who ordered wine flights, had to have this Tempranillo replaced as well. The replacement Tempranillo offered was a pretty decent wine for the price, so I ended up ordering a bottle for the table -- but unfortunately again, they were now out of it. They offered another bottle that no one had tasted, but we wanted to order another wine that my friends had liked from their tasting. Unfortunately we had to spend twice as much to do that. Bit annoying. The third slight frustration was the way the tastings were delivered. My friends had a hard time determining which wine was which. They were given a card with the names of wines, but didn't receive much more direction. The flight rack actually had an elevation aspect to it, which wouldn't make it hard to present white to red, bottom to top, and number on the card accordingly. With all of this said, I have high hopes for this place. This is needed in the area. I also really enjoyed the ambiance. I found it to be quite cozy and comfortable for a winter night, and hope they can expand to serving on the outdoor plaza during the spring/summer. I just think they need to work out the kinks and make sure they're properly staffed/properly stocked. The staff was still being trained on wines, billing systems, etc -- and was very honest about it. They certainly didn't lack any personal skills and were kind throughout the night. I'll be back for another shot, but hope for better. read more

Overpriced!!! The atmosphere is definitely cool. It's dark and really pretty. However, the staff is rude and the prices are INSANE. I was drinking Riesling, (which was $17.00 a glass-on what planet is Riesling EVER $17.00 a glass)? My third glass was not the same as the first 2 glasses. I'm pretty sure it was a Chardonnay. So I took it to the bar and just said "I don't think this is Riesling". The manager said it was, but that they just opened a new bottle and that was why it tasted different. Which was the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. A new bottle would not make sweet wine taste like Chardonnay. Regardless, the bartender then poured me a new glass of wine-which, coincidentally was a completely different color than the one I said was wrong. We ordered cheese plates and a flatbread. Everything tasted good, but again-OVERPRICED. My check was 71.00 for 3 glasses of wine and 1/3 of 2 cheese plates and a pizza. 100% not worth it. (Disclaimer: I am not cheap when it comes to dining out. I love the whole dining experience and am working my way through the top restaurants in Pgh. This could be a wonderful gathering place if they will just pay attention to customer service and retention. They supposedly don't take reservations, so our group of 7 sat at tables bunched together by our friendly waitress. There is a large table that we were told was "reserved" for later - and they don't take reservations? The owner/manager and his g/f were sitting at the large table and remained there the whole time we were there; we thought the gracious thing for him to do would be to offer us the table since the "reservation" was for much later. Happy hour drink selection was limited to bottles already opened - something we had never experienced. We ordered 2 charcuteries, a flatbread, and several small appetizers. We received a bowl of approx. 4 crackers accompanying for our cheese and other foods - 4 crackers for 7 people. We had to ask for more a couple of times and were finally told that we would be charged for an additional bowl of 6 crackers (again, there were 7 of us). Our first waitress was friendly and knowledgeable, but for some reason, the waitresses traded off and our 2nd one was not so personable. When paying the bill, which was substantial, our hostess was charged $3 for the damn crackers and the waitress would not yield. While they need to be cost-conscious in order to keep the business going, they seem to put that above service. And having more than one nice waitress would be a good thing too. read more

We love learning about wine (and love drinking it ). Brooke was curt and not attentive. We have been to a few wine bars, not many, but a few, and all of the wine stewards had given descriptions of wines we are interested in with great pairings as well. They love talking about the regions the wines come from, the tannins, body, and things like the acidity too. Not Brooke. She just seemed like she couldn't be bothered. We tried asking questions. She gave the most basic answers possible, like "it's red" or nothing at all. She did, however, bring over the book "Wine Folly" to show me about a wine I was curious about. I didn't know, because I am by no means a wine connoisseur, that Montepulciano was a grape; I thought it was the region. So instead of describing the wine I was interested in, she got the book, brought it over, and left it there, open to, you guessed it, the grape variety Montepulciano. I felt like she was trying to make me look stupid instead of interacting and being informative. I felt out of place and I've never been made to feel that way when trying something new. So, we finished up, bought a bottle of wine to go from the other wine steward (but that doesn't matter because they pool their tips) and left. PS, I have worked as a server for more than half my life and I would have never treated someone who didn't have knowledge about types of craft beers, food, liquors, or otherwise. I love sharing my knowledge. It gets people to want to learn more....and spend more money. We would've been more than happy to keep drinking and learning about new wines and spend more than our $133 bill. But she turned us off of ever going back and that's so unfortunate. I've been coming here since this place opened and have never had a bad experience. IMHO, it has only improved over time. It's a beautiful, classy wine bar with a lovely, attentive staff. I've visited on numerous occasions on different days of the week and have always been pleased with my experience. The wine selection and food items are wonderful, and the place is well-kept and clean. I've also noticed that the patrons are of various age groups, so I've never felt out of place. This is one of my favorite places to go for a glass of wine in the South Hills. Their wine selections are really good and I've never had a bad wine there. I really like going for their Happy Hour (5-6 every day), but I wish they would make it a little bit longer as it's hard to get there by 5 on a work night. I've been there when they have their wine tastings and I really enjoyed it! You get to try some great wines from all over, and there isn't a tasting fee, which was great! They also offer a few beer selections and cocktails, if you prefer. The cheese board and flatbreads are really good too, and just perfect with a glass of wine. It's really great in the spring/summer when they open up the doors and you can sit outside on the little patio. They also have live music once a week, I believe on Thursdays. I really wanted to love this place, but was disappointed. The decor is beautiful, just a lovely place to meet friends and have some wine. However, I was disappointed in the service, pricing, and portions. I met 2 friends there, two of us ordered a wine flight, 4 2-oz pours for $25. The third friend ordered a glass of ice wine which ended up being a bit less than 2-oz for $18, really too much. Our server knew about the wines they carried, but did not have extensive wine experience. We also ordered 2 charcuterie boards, $18, and a flatbread, $15. It took some time for the food to arrive and it came slowly. The first charcuterie board did not contain everything it was supposed to have. Our server never came back to check. The next board came out and was missing something, but I'm not sure which item because we had to try to figure out what the items were. Disappointed to pay for something that wasn't provided. Our flatbread didn't arrive until another server came over to see if we needed anything. The flatbread was good, so were the charcuterie boards. We never got our water refilled. And the 3 servers were not out on the floor most of the time we were there. A lot of money to spend on mediocre service and tiny pours of wine. Their hours are limited too. Below my expectations. The glass of wine I had was, in my opinion, overpriced ($13) given how stingy I felt they were with their pour - only poured me (and my friend) what seemed more like the equivalent of a sample size glass of wine. Live music was so loud to me that my eardrums crackled and I couldn't hear two words my friend was saying without asking him to repeat himself - and we even sat at the far back of the bar. Bartenders (or sommliers I guess you can call them) were, in my opinion, a bit needy and annoying - it felt like they were hovering over us and even "harrassed" us (saying "are you done with this?") to take our food plate away while we were still eating and there was still food on it. I guess since my friend and I were trying to talk (we hadn't seen eachother in 4 years) and neither of us had taken a bite of food from the plate in over a minute she thought we were done.
