This review is for Randy Vaughan, who is a wonderful driving instructor! I have my license but it had been years since I last drove, so I purchased 5 refresher lessons with AP Driving School. Randy was patient, tailored lessons to the skills that I wanted to work on (e.g., parking, driving on freeways, etc.), and taught me great techniques for parallel parking and parking in parking lots. The two hour lessons flew by as we had good conversations and I became more accustomed to driving. Randy is the best driving instructor ever! I've always been very scared of driving but decided to learn when I was 23 years old. With the help of Randy, I was able to pass on my first try! He took things at my own pace (starting at quiet neighborhoods) and only ramped things up (busy streets & eventually highways & freeways) when he saw that I was getting more comfortable. We ramped up gradually each week. I left each lesson always feeling confident and proud. He encourages and compliments you while also giving constructive feedback when needed. I was never afraid to ask any questions. He was also never late to pick me up. Couldn't have passed my behind the wheel test in a short amount of time without Randy! He's very patient, understanding, and such a great conversationalist! I've been putting off driving for the longest time, but my recommended AP Driving lessons with Randy and I'm glad I started driving with him. After a few years off the road I decided to trust the online reviews on AP driving school and specifically with Randy. My experience with him started off well, he was friendly, and very talkative. The first session was basically an evaluation, I was told. We spent 2 whole hours of what could've taken max 30 minutes driving around the outskirts of Davis and with his incessant ramblings about anything but my driving skills or any advice for navigating the road. I understand the chatting to be a way to alleviate stress on new drivers, but I was not a new driver and even then I felt like I could not get a word in when he went on tangents. It was very frustrating at some points. On my second session, we went on a windy route and it was about halfway through that I noticed a slight snore and lull in breathing on his end. I'm led to believe he snoozed off for a quick minute. If he were a regular passenger this would be okay. For a driving instructor, thats unacceptable. I decided right then I would no longer be following through with a third session. When I called the customer representative, he was rude, short, and disbelieving of my dissatisfaction with Randy. This experience left me pretty upset and I wish I had asked for a better compensation for my time. read more

I took 6 lessons, including a refresher lesson before the test, with Randy. My lessons covered basic subjects on the behind-the-wheel test as well as freeway driving. Not only did I improve as a driver rapidly in 2 months, but I also had plenty of fun with Randy during our lessons. He manages to make time fly by quickly during what is one of the most universally stressful learning experiences in life. He is calm, clear, and extremely well-versed in the law. His explanations are clear and make even difficult to learn concepts like backing up 100ft easy with little tips and tricks. Now, he emphasizes clearly that practice between lessons is essential to improve. I took his advice after each lesson and incorporated them into my practice with my parents. I passed my test on my first try, despite waiting to take my test as a 20-year old and rushing my training in two months. Randy was an amazing teacher. I couldn't have had a better instructor. I took three lessons with Nicole to prepare for the behind the wheel test in Davis after getting my permit from the DMV and she was the best instructor I could ask for. She was very clear, precise, and detailed when explaining the functions of the car; how to make turns, park, drive at a consistent speed; and how to pass the test for the DMV. She was very easy to speak to and made each of the two 3 hour lessons fly by. After the lessons, I took the behind the wheel test and passed! I would highly recommend using AP Driving School to learn how to drive! read more

Randy is the best. He has extensive experience behind the wheel, and is able to communicate these concepts so well. Nice person to talk to overall as well. Randy teaches you more than just how to pass the test - he teaches you how to drive safely in the streets, which I argue is way more important. The 20 hour package is the sweet spot for most people. You don't go completely overkill on price, yet it is more than enough practice to ace the driving test (if you need to do it). This place rocks, plain and simple. read more

I selected AP Driving (specifically, Lindsey Brooks) because of the near flawless yelp reviews they had. As it turned out I couldn't take one of the lessons with Lindsey for some reason, so he said that I could either wait a couple of weeks to have a lesson with him (he's super booked! that's how good he is) or just have a lesson with one of their newer instructors, Matthew Miller. Which brings me to the purpose of this review specifically; there are enough reviews for Lindsey, but there are barely any for Matthew owing to the fact that he is relatively new to AP Driving (as of May 1st 2017). Matthew is an amazing instructor. He gives you just the right amount of freedom for you to get the hang of things while guiding you in a way that doesn't seem too intrusive or critical in a way that hurts your confidence. I made mistakes, and Matt didn't make me feel bad about it, rather he told me what I could do to prevent those mistakes in the future, again, in a way that didn't hurt my confidence in driving. When teaching you something new, for example a parking maneuver, Matt first talks about how to do the maneuver in theory, then does it himself while outlining the important things, and will then let you take the wheel; thus eliciting a form of structure that's needed in these kinds of lessons. He's also really funny and the lessons are actually fun so that's another plus. That's basically it, if I were to suggest improvements to their lessons, I would just say that the theory in the first lesson can be condensed into half an hour or so, instead of a full hour, other than that, AP Driving is worth your money. read more

His Instructions were clear, concise and succinct to the point which made it easy to understand the rules of driving in the US as an international student. The first thing I should say is that I was so impressed with the driving instructor Lindsay Brooks, I felt compelled to open a Yelp account. Amidst all the commercial transactions we tend to make in even a week, interactions between people can often feel rote. My experience with Mr. Brooks was certainly anything but. Mr. Brooks not only possesses all the qualities that make for an extremely effective and competent driving instructor--automobile expertize, knowledge of the law, patience, and general skill--as true teacher, he also brings so much more into the lesson. Whereas I imagine that a driving lesson could easily be conducted as a mechanical and rather cold exercise, Mr. Brooks makes it clear that he approaches driving as an art--he was even keen to discuss the aesthetics of graceful driving, showing how awareness of aesthetics is often connected to safe driving practices. But if any of this sounds overly complex, rest assured that the results are real-world, everyday, and practical. Combining visual aids, heuristics, and great practical advice, Mr. Brooks is able to breakdown complex driving maneuvers into series of simple, easy to remember procedures. A personal anecdote: I am an adult who, for various reasons (living out of the country, etc.), until recently did not have driver's license. A situation arose where I needed to obtain one in a very short amount of time, as I was going to be spending a month in a place with no public transportation. Due to poor planning on my part, I was slated to take my test only days before I would be in the aforementioned situation. I had failed the test already and was quite nervous--a feeling was compounded by the fact that it seemed too late to book any time with a driving instructor. However--Mr. Brooks was so kind that, though he too had a full schedule, he gave me an impromptu driving lesson over the phone the evening before my test--off the clock and pro bono I might add! As if this wasn't kind enough, he got in touch with me the morning of my test; he had rearranged his schedule to accommodate me. I took a condensed hour and a half lesson with him right before my test and--I passed! I honestly feel that without this lesson, I would not have been adequately prepared--not only in terms of the mechanics, but also mindset. Lindsey Brooks was a friendly, patient instructor. However, I was disappointed by the lack of professionalism of this operation. The car we drove in had no company logos at all and was often very untidy on the inside. It was dusty and had personal objects (baby seats etc.) everywhere. While this may not bother other people, it made me feel as if I was not receiving the professional treatment one would expect from such a service. Had these improvements been made, I would have had a more satisfying experience. read more

Lindsay Brooks is an excellent instructor. He uses stories to teach and remind you about and gives important cues, pointers and techniques for what needs to be done while driving. Lindsay Brooks is an absolutely fabulous driving instructor! On my first driving lesson I was quite nervous of course but with Lindsay's calm attitude, I was able to feel confident and safe when driving. We bonded over our musicianship and talked philosophy. At one point during my first driving lesson, I was freaking out and extremely anxious. But Lindsay just told me stories about his kids and taught me about the Right of Way which helped calm me down and drive back home safe and sound. I would highly recommend Lindsay Brooks if you are a nervous wreck (like me) or have high anxiety issues. Lindsay's soothing voice and calm attitude will help tremendously. Happy Driving! read more
