Classic Tonkotsu Ramen
Caitlin R.

This was my second visit, as today was cold and a perfect day for some Ramen. My first visit was a special night with Yelp, where we enjoyed three appetizers, the Tonkatsu Ramen, and some mochi. Everything was great! It must have been an off day or a mistake, because the Tonkatsu I had today lacked flavor and salt. (This is coming from someone who doesn't like overly salty foods, btw) Since I knew how it was previously, I felt I had to tell my server and opted for the Sho-Yu Ramen, which I had never had, but it was much better. They were happy to swap out my Ramen for the other one, and they also offered to try again with the Tonkatsu. All in all, this is a solid Ramen experience with fantastic staff. Not the best I've ever had, but definitely still good. Combined with the other menu items I've tried and the most friendly staff, I hope they will continue to succeed, as the reviews indicate that many people enjoy the menu.

This was my second time at Aoyama and, once again, it did not disappoint! The service is consistently good, the place clean and lively, and the food is so good. This time, I ordered the chicken tacos from the specials menu. I know that Aoyama's thing is ramen, but these tacos were AMAZING. The balance of flavors was absolutely perfect in my opinion, and the sauce was to die for. I can't speak for the other location, but this place is well-worth the commute from KC.

The service here is great, they were helpful from the moment we stepped through the door. I got the spicy ramen and it was at the table fast! The flavor blend was awesome! The noodles were cooked well and the spice lever was spot on! It had a little heat, but not enough to cover up the great flavors. The servings were huge! Plan on bringing some home! Great ramen, great service!

Delish. We arrived around 6:15 pm on a Friday and there were 2 tables available. Normally they're pretty busy and it's a small seating area. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The hubby got spicy ramen and I got the classic. The hard boiled egg is SO good in the ramen. And the gyoza and dipping sauce is . Love this spot!

I was able to get a table right away, staff was quick to take drink and food order. This pork bun was delicious and a good size for an appetizer. The bowl was absolutely delicious and a great size. It was perfect on the chilly that when I was there.

The vibes of this restaurant are amazing! I love the decor and painting along the wall - it adds to the experience! We got the takoyaki and tonkatsu ramen. It came out timely and servers checked in with us often as well. Overall, the ramen was a bit underwhelming. The broth was not as flavorful and the chashu meat did not taste the freshest. However, the takoyaki was amazing. They added egg salad at the bottom and this was such a wonderful addition! I highly recommend this appetizer.

Delicious ramen! I tried the tonkotsu ramen. The broth was so rich and creamy with incredible flavor. The chashu wasn't my favorite as I had some pretty fatty pieces, but the noodles and broth more than made up for it. Not to mention they have delicious gyoza and onigiri!

Went here because I was craving some sort of hearty soup for dinner. I was happy to see this location was so close to home. I honestly didn't know what to order, about six of the ramen options sounded so good. After speaking with the waiter, he assured me that the spicy ramen was about a mild-to-medium level, so I gave it a try. It has so much flavor!! I loved it. I would say it is closer to medium, but probably still just a hint below. I also had a taste of my fiancé's ramen, and that broth was very tasty as well. I think I overheard a nearby table subbing their pork for chicken, an option I wish I knew about since that's what I prefer. We also didn't receive a drink menu and didn't realize there were beer and sake options until we saw them on other tables. Not a big deal, we plan on coming back soon.

TL;DR: If you're looking for the best ramen in town, it's at KC Craft Ramen. Aoyama used to be my go-to ramen spot in Kansas City, but I recently returned after a long time and it can't compare to what's being served these days at KC Craft Ramen. KCCR opened a year ago and has an awesomely rich but balanced broth with tons of veggies and chewy noodles made fresh onsite with a noodle machine brought from Japan. Aoyama's broth isn't nearly as complex and any added veggies are an additional cost. The noodles were also much more disappointing than I remembered. Aoyama also doesn't offer the wide range of snacks, desserts, and drinks that KCCR has, and KCCR offers popups with ramen restaurants from Japan through their partnerships with those restaurants. Bottom line - Aoyama isn't terrible for a rainy weeknight if it's close by but isn't my first pick by a long shot.

We were greeted quickly. The waitstaff were very friendly and helpful. It was dark inside the restaurant. After ordering it only took a few minutes before our food started arriving at the table. We started off with the dumplings. They came out warm. They had a good texture and very tasty! I got the shrimp and pork bun. The shrimp was perfect! The pork bun was chewy but it was good. We would recommend trying this restaurant out.

We came in early around 11 and it was mostly empty. They had very quick service and were also very friendly. I started with the Gyoza which was very good. It was soft, warm and full of flavor. Then I got a ramen bowl with chicken broth, garlic, and green onions. It was very hearty, and soothing. I really enjoyed it.

Yikes. What has happened to this place? Why has it gone downhill so badly? I ordered a bowl of the ramen I had in my previous review, which has a spicy soup base. Because I like things really spicy, I asked for an extra cup of the spicy sauce on the side to add in to increase the heat level. When they brought my order, my ramen had a non spicy base, and the side of spicy less than a teaspoon and not enough to make it hot. Additionally, the soup was room temperature. I told the waiter about this, and he said they used a non spicy broth so I could adjust the spice myself, which is not what I asked for. He didn't fix the issue or give me what I actually ordered. He also didn't even give me more of the spicy mixture to add in. He just left me there with a bowl of cold, bland, unspicy, subpar soup. To add to this mess, I then discovered I was upcharged for the side of spicy, even though it was only the amount that should have been included in my bowl in the first place. To make matters worse, if you come here alone and say you would prefer to sit at a table rather than at the bar, elbow to elbow with men you don't know, the servers treat you like absolute garbage and rush you as fast as they can so they can turn your table over. I was there less than 15 min total, with other tables open, and they treated me like I was the biggest inconvenience on the planet. This is a place I used to love, but it's only going to stay a memory moving forward. Horrible treatment with subpar food. Yuck.

I have a gluten allergy, if I bring my own shirataki noodles, will the chef add them into the ramen broth for me?

Yes they will they have to cater to the customer expeciallu with a allergy they will accommodate! Been there multiple times I always see people bringing things in for a personalized meal!

What is takoyaki? Looks interesting, but what is it?

Octopus balls. Its like a doughy ball with chewy pieces inside. sounds weird i know, u just gotta try it.

How long is the soft opening for? I just came across your page and so excited

I think I heard the soft opening was this week and the grand opening will be next week?

Very excited about this! Any idea when is it expected to open?

We are holding a soft opening on next Monday the 14th.

Their ramen bowls come with standard ingredients and anything else you want is à la carte to add including an egg. Now that surprised me. My ramen had spicy chicken, spinach, bean sprouts and green onion. Both the spicy creamy shrimp and our table shared crispy chicken had flavors that met expectations. Both were crunchy and seasoned well. My ramen had very creamy broth with immense flavor. It wasn't very spicy so I added in some of the complimentary sauces in little jars on the table: seasoning sauce , gyoza sauce and hot sauce

Khop Jai Der is a very small place with tables crowded together that made it difficult to navigate with my current and temporary situation of using crutches. I ordered the Papaya Salad and asked for moderate spice level. What I received looked nothing like my last fantastic salad. Very little sauce, a skimpy amount of papaya, pieces of cabbage that were way too large and a spice level that was way over-board. The female that brought my dish ignored me for the rest of my lunch even though she was sitting at the table next to me talking to her friends. I never got a water refill that I desperately needed and had to get up and maneuver my way to the restroom for napkins after deleting the two at the table because of severe sinus drain. I finally took 70% of my meal to the register and asked for a to-go box. I showed my Hmong co-worker the next day and he agreed that this was not the place to get what I craved. He brought me a homemade bowl of the greatest papaya salad for my lunch today so I finally did find redemption, but it wasn't from KJD. With an almost inedible $20+ lunch, inadequate and dismissive service while my digestive tract was on fire and a claustrophobic environment, I can't find a reason to recommend this place. The biggest let down that I've had in a very long time.
