We were either hungry or the bagels were that good. It's probably a combination of both. Now, let's talk about the kindness of the staff and the vibe of the place. I forgot to request alternative milk. We were just going to purchase another cup with almond milk. They made me a cup without charge. How sweet is that. Today I had their Mayan Mocha with Almond milk and only half sweetened. It was pretty delicious but I do wish I left it sweetened haha I wanted to taste more of the mocha. How did I immediately know their quality was still great? Their line never goes down. I ordered the cortado, the Kentucky Smoke, and a sausage and cheese kolache. The cortado was pretty much perfect - one of the best in the city. The Kentucky Smoke was also a delight. It's not too sweet, so if you want to change up your latte but not go tooth-achingly sweet, this flavor is a must. The kolache was great. It had croissant-like dough, was salty in the best ways, and overall very satisfying. Staff continues to be unfailingly nice. I was tempted to buy a bag of coffee, but since I haven't been making much coffee at home, I decided another time. They were nice enough to warm the cookie for me, and it had that "fresh out of the oven" smell and gooeyness. They asked me if I wanted my drinks for here or to-go and I said for here and they still served me in to-go cups, which I thought was weird. The cortado was not my favorite. It was bitter and acidic and the foam was looking a little yeasty. The mocha latte also had very little flavor to it, tasting like hot milk. I had difficulty finishing both drinks. Later I noticed they were using What's Brewing beans, and it made sense. I know many folks love WB? coffee beans, as it's a bit of a local darling, but more often than not I don't enjoy cortados made with their beans. Dirty dishes and cutlery sat on a couple of tables long after folks had left. I don't want to make assumptions, because there WAS a designated staff member for cleaning/wiping things down, but maybe those two evaded her. There's a sign on the wall that says, "I'm not for everyone," and boy are they right. They also stopped playing one of my favorite Radiohead songs (right in the middle of it!) to play Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. Now while I'm not deducting stars for THAT (because that's just downright petty), I can't help but feel unimpressed by my most recent visit. At least the cookie was delicious. Perhaps a third visit is in order. As they say, third time's a charm, right?

The shop is small but cozy, with a smattering of outdoor seats to compensate for the scant seating inside (though no less cozy, I really enjoyed my cushy window seat). I ordered a pistachio lemon bar, a cortado, and asked for a recommendation for a second drink. Angela, who took my order, said the South-EE is their most popular beverage, so I opted for that, hot. The lemon bar was very sweet with a puckering tartness in the frosting, but it paired beautifully with my cortado. The cortado was a little foamy but the flavor was robust and comforting, like being hugged by a lumberjack. The South-EE (espresso, brown sugar, cinnamon) - it took everything in me to not immediately chug this down. It was the perfect temperature by the time I was ready to drink it, and it was overall a yummy treat. The two staff holding down the fort that day were incredibly nice. Good folks, great drinks.
