Free Lunch Friday from my employer was from Antonelli's Deli in El Cajon. I brought my lunch but took advantage of the offer and ordered a sando knowing it was going to feed me at home over the weekend. It was a phenomenal sandwich! I mean, easily one of the best I've ever had. The #12: Capocollo & Provolone Sandwich on Marble Rye. I asked for mayo and mustard only. The capocollo was sliced wafer thin and piled high. The provolone was thick sliced. Both were of excellent quality. The capocollo was like butter, it just melted in my mouth. It was peppery and had a superb rich flavor. If you're looking for a true deli style sandwich that's both high quality and huge, look no further! I had to try the the #1 as it's the house special and a true hero/sub.... whatever you call it where you're from. I decided on the 8" since I wasn't "hungry enough" for a footlong. Well, it turns out I wasn't hungry enough for an 8" either. These things are huge! The bread is as fresh as it gets, spongy with just enough pull. Stays together without getting soggy and turning into a mess. The meats and cheeses are fresh as well and it's just an all around great sandwich. The interior is simple with a few tables and a big enough area to wait for your freshly made food. Be patient, they get busy and for good reason. It's not fast food, but it's good food! Even the seating was typical. Be there before the rush because lunch time gets packed. I would definitely come back. Iconic deli in El Cajon located in an industrial area of town off the 67 freeway. Plentiful parking. Outstanding service - very welcoming and articulate. I've been coming to Antonelli's for a couple decades now and my father has been going for many more before me. He knew and would chat with Andy before he passed away. Antonelli's has remained the gold-standard Italian-style sub sandwich for as long as I can remember, from grabbing them on the way to the beach as a child to popping in to grab one while I'm in town as an adult. They even let us stay past their official closing time to finish our meal. They gave us great recommendations from the menu. Def family oriented business you feel the love as you walk in! Big Menu! Lots of options they even have breakfast! It was hard to choose one but I was in the mood for comfort and went with a hot one - the meatball sub, the man went with a cold Meaty one #1 which was packed with greatness! The best sandwich I've ever had! I got the pastrami and the pastreuben and both were amazingly juicy and delicious! The pastrami is my favorite though because it has more vegetables and the fluffy bread makes it a really well balanced sandwich that I can eat all of. The pastreuben was a lot heavier and I wasn't able to eat the whole thing, but it is still good I would just split it with someone. There's plenty of parking and outdoor seating which is nice. I was introduced to Antonelli's Deli by my husband and quickly became a regular customer, visiting once or twice a week. Unfortunately, my most recent experience was disappointing. I ordered a sandwich and received the wrong meat. While I understand that mistakes can happen, I was only offered either a refund or a replacement sandwich. This did not take into account the inconvenience of having to return to the store, including the additional time and expense. As a loyal customer, I would have appreciated a resolution that acknowledged this inconvenience more thoughtfully. Customer service is not only about correcting errors, but also about valuing a customer's time and continued support. Because of this experience, I have decided to take my business elsewhere. I was so excited to try this place because I've heard great things! But I think I messed up on my first experience. I ordered a pastrami sandwich because it looked delicious. So delicious, but hear me out. Deducting one star because of grease. Asked for my sandwiches to be toasted (dry- not grilled with butter) and dang were they soooo greasy. The sandwiches are amazing. They are big and flavorful. I have tried different ones over the years and have never been disappointed. The only drawback is the customer service. I usually get some items on the side since I take some to work and they give less tomatoes and onions vs if you get it on the sandwich. We went to try out this place for lunch. I ordered the grilled pastrami on sourdough and my friend got the 8" vegetarian. The pastrami was delicious. It was perfectly grilled and had a lot of meat. Next time, I'll add onion and hold the lettuce. My friend said the vegetarian sub was delicious, but it was just too much food. IlNext time she would definitely order the 4". I also ordered the number one sub to go. Later, when we went to eat it, we realized it was too much bread and was so dry. We took off the whole bottom bread and then added some mayo and Italian dressing to it and ate it open-faced, and it was delicious. Next time we will order it on sourdough or squaw bread. When my husband and I want a deli sandwich we will only go to Antonelli's. We have mistakenly tried a couple of other deli's one in Santee and one big chain shop (yes we cheated). Since we were introduced to Antonelli's some 20 years ago we are definitely spoiled so all others pale in comparison. True, Antonelli's is a premium price (the others aren't inexpensive either) but as the commercial says, "you're worth it." Pro tip because Antonelli's is so very good don't plan on a quick trip unless you order ahead and pick up around 11 a.m. Otherwise, go for a more leisurely lunch. sit, chat and enjoy-you might need to share the table.
