It seems like I've been hearing rave reviews for the Atlanta location for years, so the husband and I were stoked to learn that Antico was opening a second location literally minutes from our house. Although we hope to make it downtown someday, the proximity of this location honestly made it worth the wait. And tonight we finally got to try it out.
I'll admit that we proceeded to Avalon with more than a hint of trepidation after reading the other less-than-stellar Yelp reviews that have been left thus far. But at 38 weeks pregnant, after talking about having this pizza all day long, I decided we had to just bite the bullet. Nonetheless, being 38 weeks pregnant and having a toddler, we also opted to take the pizza home rather than battle the horde of families already crowded inside. So take this review for what it's worth -- an assessment of Antico Pizza Avalon for its takeout quality. I cannot speak to the ambiance, though my unwillingness to search for a highchair and table might give you some indication of the level of crowd you can expect on a Sunday night. (Bonus points that they were open on Sunday though. We couldn't find hours on the website and expected that they would be closed, seeing as how the Atlanta location appears to be closed on Sundays).
So despite the mass of people crowded inside, we had zero wait in line, ordered our pizzas from a pleasant cashier, and then waited all of five minutes while they were prepared before our eyes and then baked in 90 seconds. Literally, the pizzas were baked in 90 seconds. And to be fair, I missed seeing most of this process because I had a longer wait for a bathroom stall (what's up with only having two stalls?) than my husband and son waited for our pizzas. By the time I emerged from the ladies' room, a young man was boxing up our pies for transport home. I will say that while he was polite and friendly to me, he made two comments about how he couldn't wait to go home. I'll chalk that up to his youth but it stuck with me as we trekked back to the car.
As for the pizzas themselves, we had the Margherita DOP (San Marzano tomato, buffalo mozzarella, basil, and garlic) with pepperoni and the Pomodorini (cherry Vesuvian tomato, buffalo mozzarella, basil, and garlic). While what others have said about a soggy inner crust tended to be true for the Margherita, it was less true for the Pomodorini. I think perhaps the addition of pepperoni, which added a bit of oil to the pizza, and the sauce on the Margherita overwhelmed the thin inner crust, but the sogginess was something I can 100% live with because the ingredients are so stellar. This was not a grease-pit pizza by any means, and you can tell that the dough is premium. It's no wonder they shut down when they run out of dough. They're using dough made with love.
So how much did we enjoy it? Well they sell one size pizza, which I would characterize as large, and out of 16 pieces on our two pizzas, between my husband and myself, only four pieces were left. Our toddler helped a little, too. How I managed to fit that much pizza into a body that's nearly filled to capacity with another human being is beyond me, but the baby approved. read more
