After visiting the Hearthfire Grill many times over the years, last April I visited for a meal with a dear friend and gave a 1-star review of my experience. It was horrible. I am happy to report, after a year of avoiding this restaurant, i am able to give a 5-star review. The service was excellent, the food was delicious and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the atmosphere was ... well, being by the water on a sunny day in Olympia = what more can I say.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Thank you Hearthfire for stepping up and making the changes necessary. TL;DR - Great views with mediocre food and subpar service. Me and my colleagues were in town for business and wanted to go somewhere upscale after a week of daily overtime. We made the 45 minute drive from Dupont. We had a reservation for 5:00 pm and were seated after only a few minutes. We had water poured for us and our server brought bread to the table. The bread wasn't anything special, could have used some oil to dip it in. After a bit of a wait, our waiter was knowledgeable when asked about the fish on the menu, he did a good job explaining the options etc. I opted for the flank steak 3 course meal with Caesar salad, flank steak and jar of key lime desert. I got an additional coup of tomato soup and a beer. One coworker got blackened halibut with peach salsa and a beer, the other coworker got corn chowder, blackened halibut with the lemon orgeno seasonsing with an unsweetened tea. He also ordered the calamari as an appetizer. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The views were awesome -- the reason you come to this place and not somewhere else. It was a rainy, drizzly day but the views still did not disappoint[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Our drinks were brought out pretty quickly. My soup and salad were brought out quickly. The Caesar salad was lightly dressed (one of my coworkers commented on it as well) but I thought it was good -- they added real chunks of bacon that made for a good night. Tomato soup was just decent. I traded spoons fulls of soup with my coworker -- we both agreed that the corn chowder tasted like nothing with a slight corn aftertaste. It required salt and pepper to impart any flavor. Service wasn't great. Our server was nice enough, and made sure we had waters but never asked us if we wanted another beer and never refilled the unsweetened tea. The appetizer we put in never came out - we told him not to worry about it after the dessert came out. Checkins were very infrequent for the hour and twenty minutes we were at the restaurant. The food was plated very well - it looked appetizing, aided by the huge windows and lots of natural light. The flavor just wasn't there though. Food was chronically underseasoned -- all three at our table agreed. When I went to add salt to my steak, the salt was clumpy due to moisture and when I shook it the plug on the bottom came off and showered salt all over me, the table and my food. My companions thought it was hilarious; I was a little bit salty about the whole affair. When I examined the shaked it was obvious that the plug at the bottom was stripped out and didn't grip well but that didn't stop it from being put out for service. My server helpfully offered to replace the salt shaker- I told him I thought I had enough to last for a lifetime. The cornbread pudding tasted better than I thought it would - I was expecting a soupy mess but it was actually very similar to stuffing. It wasn't that great however. The green beans we all had seemed undercooked a bit. The peach salsa was diced a little coarsely and the lemon oregeno seasoning added little flavor. The fish was advertised as blackened but appeared much lighter. When the dessert came out I was a little disappointed at the portion size. I offered my companions a bite and both declined: "That's looks like it only have two spoon fulls, I don't want to eat all your dessert." The texture was closer to a thick pudding vs a key lime pie and the ratio of graham cracker crust to pie filling was off - it needed more crust. For price, I was OK with the three course early dinner option for $33 -- I felt that was a strong value. My companions who paid quite a bit more weren't as satisfied with the value for the money. I don't like giving out two star reviews but this went from a questionable 3 star to a solid 2 star with the service faux pas and the lack of flavor. Moral of the story: a nice place to see but I wouldn't want to eat there. read more

Was seated pretty quickly after arriving. Asked the waiter about the fish selection and he was pretty well versed in explaining the selections which sold me on the Wild Alaskan Halibut. One of my coworkers ordered the calamari for a starter which never arrived to the table. Bummer.. The starters for my coworkers came out. Tomato basil soup - was decent, nothing special to me or any of my coworkers. Caesar salad - looked pretty light on the dressing to me but my coworker liked it. Crab & corn chowder - had no flavor per my coworker. Entrees came out. I had the Blackened Wild Alaskan Halibut with peach salsa. There wasn't enough char of the fish for my liking the salsa was okay but I felt the peaches could've been diced a little finer. The veggies had no flavor. One coworker got Wild Alaskan Halibut with oregano butter sauce and his take was he didn't taste the butter sauce at all and felt his veggies were undercooked. The last entree was the Double R Ranch Flank Steak and his take was the steak was okay. Didn't like the cranberry jalapeño relish it was topped with and felt his veggies were undercooked as well. The key lime pie far was pretty bland per my coworker as well and he didn't like the texture of the pie nor the pie to crust ratio. Overall the experience wasn't the best and the service was as mediocre as the food. read more

I came here on a work dinner with a few clients. They were able to seat us on time and had a good round table which was appreciated. The food was good, we had the crab dip and I had a surf and turf option with crab and steak. The restaurant was nice and was good for an elevated client dinner. I am dropping a star for two reasons. The first was our server was quite slow, we had to flag down a different server to order bottles of wine. Additionally our server did not write down any of the orders for a table of 6. My coworker made a joking comment that she wasn't writing anything down and the server said not to worry, she would remember it. I was a server previously, so I know it is possible for servers to not need to write down orders, however, I think that is you aren't going to write it down, it needs to be correct. I ordered my filet to be cooked medium rare, and my client ordered hers medium. In fact, when I ordered mine medium rare, she made a face and joked with me that it isn't cooked enough for her liking. Once we got our food, I noticed that my steak was medium and hers was medium rare, and my client proceeded to only eat the shrimp on her plate. She was a client and didn't want to make a big deal out of it, so she didn't say anything. Therefore my only comment is if you aren't going to write it down, even if it was the kitchen's mistake, it looks like an easily avoided mistake by the server. I'm always apprehensive when a restaurant has a gorgeous view... because they never really have to try very hard. The service here was non existent, and the food was absolutely not worth the trip or the price. Ordered calamari, got a plate with a mound of lettuce and some fried calamari crumbs on top; ridiculous. Ordered the grilled steelhead, excellent flavor, perfectly cooked. Veggies were cold, and the corn bread pudding tasted like stove top stuffing. Halibut- cooked and seasoned well, small portion. Rice was dry and flavorless, veggies were cold. Mac & Cheese was the saving grace believe it or not, pasta cooked al dente, good cheese sauce, lots of chicken and crispy prosciutto bits. Smoked Salmon Chowder wasn't a chowder, it was a Bisque, not chunky or hearty at all, only soup, no salmon, no chunks of potato or anything. Dessert- Bread pudding had no structure really, very mushy and undercooked, yet somehow burnt on the bottom, same for the Brookie? For $200 it was offensively poor quality. I want to give them a good review, I really do but I just can't. It was my birthday and we saved up for a celebration meal. We both ordered an appetizer that was delicious. For our main course, we both ordered the BBQ garlic shrimp, one of the higher priced menu items. We never got served bread with our meal, all of the tables around us did, but not us. Why? For our main course, we got a bunch of potatoes and a little asparagus with 4 measily shrimp, both of us. For a dish that cost $26 each, I expected better and complained. The waitress was awesome. Anthony's ended up comp'ing my meal, so that's nice. But the problem is bigger. I get that in this economy food costs are higher. My brother in law runs a fine dining restaurant in Grays Harbor, so I get it. But if your quality reduction or your price increase strategy is based on pretentiousness, that is not OK. Any restaurant with Anthony's reputation should never serve chintzy portions. read more

So we come here a few times a year. And always on New Year's Eve. We ordered the our drink & fried calamari. We get our drinks maybe 10 minutes later. We ordered our main meals. I had the steak with dungeons crab, my husband ordered the steak and lobster & my mom ordered the steak and scallops. No calamari after 30 minutes. Then we got our meals. There was barely any crab on top of my steak and my mom's little bitty scallops four of them. The mashed potatoes were gummy and cold. Oh yeah, we never got the calamari. We had family in town and went on a drive and ended up here right before they opened for lunch on a Saturday. We were sat by the large windows looking over the water and got to watch seal tv while we snacked on the delicious garlic bread and waited for our food.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Two of us ordered the bacon and blue cheeseburger, two of us ordered the crispy cod burger. I personally really liked the bacon and blue, it had some type of sticky bbq sauce on it that was really good. The other person who ordered the same agreed it was good but way overpriced. The two that ordered the cod burger agreed about their meal saying it was overcooked and overpriced. I thought our server was great, she was kind and accommodating but busy so it took some time to get the check. Excellent value for money: the early bird menu for $29 for each 3 course dinner. The shrimp cocktail was good. I didn't expect the tiny shrimp in it. The cocktail sauce was perfect for it. The salmon was moist and just slightly overcooked. The topping on it was excellent and complimented the rice pilaf. The green beans were aldente, perfectly done. The desert was cheese cake covered with a berry sauce. Delicious!!! Our guests had cod which also was perfect. Same rice pilaf and green beans. Tonight we decided on a spur of the moment and even though we didn't have a reservation they were still able to seat us. Man, we got the best seats in the house! Right on the water, right at high tide, right as the sun set! Who could ask for a better location? Menu here is a bit different than other Anthony's, simple but still plenty to choose from. I thought that the food was really hood, and the lobster specials were a good deal. They gave us just the right portion size, considering we also enjoyed crab, shrimp, artichoke dip with flat bread, and dessert. We had no left overs which was fine! The service was excellent, very professional. The only thing slightly slow was the cocktails, but it didn't matter. The list of drinks was very good, and we really enjoyed dessert cocktails with Amaretto, Khalua , over an ice cream type smoothy, delicious!! It's a very nice place for friends, family and business people to enjoy a special occasion. Nice and warm in a stormy night with beautiful glass lamp lighting that made me think of Chihuly glass. My first sit down meal since the pandemic. I was disappointed in the food that was served today. For a twenty five dollar meal the size of the fish was very small. Also the fries were greasy and should not have been served. They looked like scraps left from other fries that were cooked. We dropped one hundred and twenty five dollars for our food and tip. The food alone was one hundred dollars. I did not make a fuss because of my family being there with me. This use to be my favorite restaurant not anymore. We arrived at this location for dinner at high tide. The ambiance and the views are amazing. This is the perfect location to celebrate a special occasion. The food is cooked fresh to order and it tastes delicious. Our steaks were served at the perfect temperature. The prices are reasonable and competitive for the quality of food and service. It's hard to honestly decide how many stars. Our experience was very up and down. Started nicely with a gorgeous scene right next to the bay with harbor seals playing about. The server was friendly enough and we were helped quickly. We ordered the calamari and it was a very hefty portion. It was tasty enough but wish it had been cooked a little longer. I then had the lobster corn chowder. I personally feel it was over priced for $14 for a cup and very lacking in flavor. Had to salt and pepper quiet a bit and I don't usually add salt to my dishes. My husband had the sirloin steak. It was extremely disappointing how small a cut. They never offered the size in the menu but for the price it was not worth it. It was maybe 6oz. For $34 dollars that's hard to appreciate. It was cooked well and great flavor. The broccoli was undercooked. I had the Alaskan halibut. It was cooked very well and the pistachio pilaf was very nice. Again the broccoli was very hard and under cooked. Both of our portions were quiet small. Wish I had taken more pictures as the food itself was plated well and beautifully cooked. Lastly we had a little issue with the bill our server made and it was fixed and they were very kind. We were not upset as mistakes happen and they handled it very well. I wasn't however a fan of the cleaner, dirty rag two tables down from us that sat the entire time. For as "nice" of a restaurant it is supposed to be with the prices of dishes I feel those small details are important. read more

I have eaten here many times over the last 14 years, yet tonight it was a huge disappointment. I was excited for the advertised April Halibut Early Dinner special. I arrived with a friend before 5pm, there were a few people at tables and we were seated fairly quickly. That was the good part. When I attempted to order a happy hour drink along with my dinner I was informed they do not serve happy hour beverages in the dining area. (Could I have purchased one at the bar and brought it to the table? I'll never know) So we ordered our 3 course meals. It took quite a long time for the cold appetizers to arrive. Then there was more wait time for the entree - which, by the way, included a small piece of halibut - and more wait time for the dessert. A simple "Early Dinner" took more than 2 hours and involved asking the water girl to get our dessert (we were told "it is not ready." - it was a sorbet and a crème brûlée, neither requiring that much time to plate.) Our waiter never checked back with us re: the meal. Our waiter did finally show up and brought the bill - never asked if one bill or two, had to ask for that - and that was the quickest part of the experience. He never returned to collect the payment - I was ready to walk out. Chose to ask another staff member to run our credit cards. Sad and tedious experience, not sure I will return. read more

We had a beautiful spot in the corner by the window, but after sitting down I noticed the dust on the window sills and the crumbs all over the floor from the previous guests. It just wasn't clean. My husband and I have worked at fine dining restaurants so we have an eye for these kinds of things. Our server finally greeted us 10 minutes after being seated, which was also another turn off for me. He did however serve our drinks quickly. We ordered the calamari to start. And for our mains: the Wagyu burger and IPA beer for my husband, and the Alaskan Habliut and Nojito mocktail for me. The calamari was below average in my opinion. We've tried calamari from many restaurants and this didn't make the cut. It was overly breaded, lacking flavor and a lemony punch (even with the lemon wedge on the side), and the calamari pieces were so small. My husband requested a medium temp. patty and his burger came back well done. If you're going to ask for the temp. at least be sure to cook it at the customer's request. The burger was just a burger. Nothing special with no homemade sauce just ketchup and mayo (really?). The only thing fancy was that the patty was wagyu. The way it was presented looked like a burger you could get at Denny's. My food on the other hand was not too bad, but not great either. The Halibut was cooked perfectly but the sauce they put on top was sweet, almost jam-like. They also put the sauce on top of the rice pilaf so I felt like I was eating dessert. It was lacking balance. Needed some salt to cut through the sweetness of the dish. After eating our server didn't check up on us. My husband got up to pay our bill and a few minutes before my husband came back to our table, our waiter finally came to buss our dishes. Service could be better. All I can say is our entire experience was not worth over $100. The view is beautiful but I think that is the only selling point of this restaurant. I'll give it 2 stars for the view. My husband said the best thing he tried that night was my Nojito mocktail and I couldn't agree more. read more

We stopped in with some friends tonight. Last time, we ate outside. It was clean and staff were friendly. We sat and enjoyed a sunny winter sunset with amazing views while eating the delicious dinner. They have an early dinner menu. Local IPA Top Rung Brewery and a great Moscow Mule. Early dinner was yummy, and dessert was great. So good.... I forgot to take pictures since I was in a food coma. It has been a while since I returned, but it will now be one of my favorite places to eat. Masks and cleaning supplies when checking in, guests, and staff all wore masks. Ample parking and handicap parking are available. Bathrooms were clean and with individual sinks in every stall. Overall, this is a hidden gem that we were glad we stopped in. Reason for 5 Star is due to wonderful food, great staff, beautiful views and cleanliness. During these times, safety should be a priority. We can't wait to return again. read more
