I really wasn't too sure what to make of this place, but I'm almost always willing to try. I'm glad I did. The mocca cruffin and the twice baked pistachio white chocolate croissant were delicious. The loaf of sourdough that I also got is one of the tops in my books. Flourist and Bread Culture in Vancouver are my other two faves. If you come through Courtnay, pay a visit. Smallish store, friendly staff. Prices are reasonable, and parking in the adjacent lot is available.

There is no skimping on fresh ingredients. Blueberry muffins are chock-full of juicy blueberries, the lemon tarts are so lemony and you could not imagine a better cinnamon bun. I'm addicted to their vegan sandwich which is bursting with flavourful yams, caramelized onions, sun-dried tomatoes, humus, lettuce, and cukes on homemade focaccia. I suggest you try it even if you are not vegan. The staff are lovely and the venu is casual, clean and uncluttered. It's a no muss, no fuss place with the focus on exceptional food prepared by someone who loves what they do and really cares about you.

Apparently, Cakebread do a mean garlic loaf - with a whole bulb baked into the center. What is there not to love about that? Anyway, I didn't get to try it, so I can't review it - I just will dream about that instead. Rather, I tried out a chocolate brownie. I've been a little disappointed with brownies since I moved to the states, so I thought I would try out a Canadian version, to see if it could compare to the wonder of the brownies sold in London's Borough Market. Well, it didn't - but it was incredibly luscious. Chocolate icing on top and a surprise of biscuit (cookie) threaded through the brownie itself. I do like a bit of texture when I am chowing down. One brownie was probably a bit too rich for one person - but, I was alone - and I do hate seeing food go to waste. It's called taking one for the team, ok?

The only possible negative aspect is the limited hours of operation and that there is always a line up.
