My friend's coffee came with a layer of highly sweetened dust, possibly chocolate, not requested. Coffee? No flavor of coffee at all. What the heck, something has dropped-off from quality, since our last visit a few months ago. We didn't hear fresh coffee being grounded. Was it out of a tin? Even though the breakfast bagel was ok, we don't plan on visiting any time soon. Blah, to the so called coffee, after taste.

The order counter is at the back. It can be confusing if people are waiting for orders, the coffee comes up in the right side but I find people are kind of jostling/waiting and it's hard to tell who's in line when they're busy. Some people stand in front of the condiment/napkin station to by then you've had to say excuse me a couple of times. The Cortado is my go to and this one is strong and also quite substantial compared to say Parallel 49, which is tiny. I like that they ask you what strength of beans you'd prefer. They have a fresh sheet with menu items. I ordered the first thing on the list which was a Rosemary Rock Salt bagel with lox and arugula. The counter person told me it may take 15-20 mins to make the bagel. Almost like she didn't want me to order it?Fine I'm in no rush. Maybe the toasting takes time? The bagel was either not toasted or barely toasted with a very thin schmear of cream cheese, some fresh smoked salmon, lots of arugula and some small chopped red onion and a sprinkle of feta. The whole thing ate kind of 'dry' like it needed a spritz of olive oil and some acid, maybe a squeeze of lemon. The arugula was dry as a bone. Didn't offer any of the pepperiness you'd normally expect. For 15$ it was ok but def with a few tweaks it could've been delicious. I didn't try any baked goods. The inside ambiance is very friendly as lots of locals here and chatting, and due to the size of the space it was quite loud. Lots of seating at tables and some comfy seats as well.

I love bread in all forms. So long as you are crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside (somewhat…read morelike a baked armadillo - for ex-pat British reviewers, this may make some semblance of sense) - I am all yours. Apparently, Cakebread do a mean garlic loaf - with a whole bulb baked into the center. What is there not to love about that? Anyway, I didn't get to try it, so I can't review it - I just will dream about that instead. Rather, I tried out a chocolate brownie. I've been a little disappointed with brownies since I moved to the states, so I thought I would try out a Canadian version, to see if it could compare to the wonder of the brownies sold in London's Borough Market. Well, it didn't - but it was incredibly luscious. Chocolate icing on top and a surprise of biscuit (cookie) threaded through the brownie itself. I do like a bit of texture when I am chowing down. One brownie was probably a bit too rich for one person - but, I was alone - and I do hate seeing food go to waste. It's called taking one for the team, ok?

Cakebread had just what we were looking for. I wish we had more opportunities to come back as they also had a delicious looking selection of baked goods. Highly recommend the turkey croissant sandwich or the prosciutto sandwich on baguette. Both came with a delicious roasted pepper tapenade and carmelozed onion spread.
