I love bread in all forms. So long as you are crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside (somewhat like a baked armadillo - for ex-pat British reviewers, this may make some semblance of sense) - I am all yours. Apparently, Cakebread do a mean garlic loaf - with a whole bulb baked into the center. What is there not to love about that? Anyway, I didn't get to try it, so I can't review it - I just will dream about that instead. Rather, I tried out a chocolate brownie. I've been a little disappointed with brownies since I moved to the states, so I thought I would try out a Canadian version, to see if it could compare to the wonder of the brownies sold in London's Borough Market. Well, it didn't - but it was incredibly luscious. Chocolate icing on top and a surprise of biscuit (cookie) threaded through the brownie itself. I do like a bit of texture when I am chowing down. I really enjoyed the ready to eat sandwiches from here. We were heading out to visit Strathcona Park for a day hike and looking for some tasty sandwiches to eat mid hike for lunch. Cakebread had just what we were looking for. I wish we had more opportunities to come back as they also had a delicious looking selection of baked goods. Highly recommend the turkey croissant sandwich or the prosciutto sandwich on baguette. Both came with a delicious roasted pepper tapenade and carmelozed onion spread. read more

I'm attracted to bakeries like a moth to light so, being in Courtenay for an afternoon, I stopped by Cakebread. They have a rather small display of cookies/cakes to the left and a long display of chocolates running down the length of the store to the right. I bought some items to bring to somebody's house later that evening: lemon love cookies cranberry spelt cookies pecan bars The lemon love cookies were delicate and soft with a nice lemon flavour that wasn't overpowering. I didn't try the cranberry spelt cookies but they were all gone so I assume they were really good :) The hit for me was the pecan bar... YUMM, there was a shortbread base topped with caramel and topped with lots of pecans. I love pecan pie but I think I'd choose this pecan bar over a full out pecan pie anyday. There was just the right amount of caramel to keep it all together, not too much where it's all gooey and messy. I could have eaten more for sure. Too bad you're so far away, Cakebread! read more

Okay, I ordered a Raspberry Peach Melba cake for our dear friends birthday. Because we were having lunch at the Black Fin in Comox I was told that the delivery would be $7.50, no problem. I asked that they ensure that the cake arrived by NOON on that day as we were eating early at 12:30p.m. My husband and I arrived at 12:10 and after being seated I asked if the cake had arrived. The supervisor came out and said that no cake had been delivered...I said that perhaps due to being a Friday and lots of traffic slowed us down that they were probably on their way. Our friends arrived at 12:30 and we started our lunch with appetizers. Lost track of time and looked and it was 12:50, I thought I had better ensure that the cake had arrived....NO! Had to call the bakery and ask where our cake was....put on hold then told that the delivery girl arrived late to pick up the cake and it SHOULD arrive anytime now.....20 minutes later our waiter indicated that the cake was in the kitchen cooler. I was so embarrassed because I kept jumping up to check arrival.....our friends of course pretty much figured out what I was up to but I was not happy. The cake is delicious and the decorating was perfect. Too bad there wasn't a reliable delivery person handling it....after all it was $7.50. We ordered our wedding cake/cupcakes and they turned out amazing! The head baker understood exactly the ideas we were looking for and he was so easy to work with. It only took two meetings to produce the exact product we wanted and the price was great! So happy and the caked were delicious! No complaints. read more

This bakery shares the same room/space as Hot Chocolate. I was confused the first few times I have been here until it clicked in. They have amazing cakes, breads and syrups. This place is always busy. The customer service could be better, however, I understand that there were busy. read more

WOW !!! If you are "foodies" like we are, you MUST add this to your "to do's list" in Courtenay, BC!!! A fantastic find nestled with in the fabulous shopping on 5th St..... What drew our attention first when entering was the store was the bakery. The selection of cakes, cookies, brownies & squares was magnetic and if that wasn't enough, to the right was Gelato & chocolates... I've loved gelato ever since spending a summer in Italy & I had yet to enjoy the same freshness & flavor since... I have finally found it ..... I promise you will not be disappointed when trying the Chocolate/orange gelato!!...... We also enjoyed a chocolate brownie, so moist, rich and heavy like fudge it would definitely please any chocoholic, hands down! Tried the sticky buns and the artisan strudel. The sticky bun was tough and tasteless...the strudel...hmm..I think the artisan who made it must have been a leather worker...because the pastry had the consistency of that product. The apple filling... also not a fave...too many cloves for my taste. Busy place though...some people must like their products. read more

Was killing time in Courtenay today and had to stop in here just based on the smell outside. I ended up getting a latte and an oatmeal cookie. They were both delicious and I stayed to order 4 more cookies to go. They have amazing looking breads and cakes and other goodies. They also have a tasting station for their own vinegars and oils. Delicious. I will probably be stopping here every time I'm in town. read more
