I love bread in all forms. So long as you are crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside (somewhat…read morelike a baked armadillo - for ex-pat British reviewers, this may make some semblance of sense) - I am all yours. Apparently, Cakebread do a mean garlic loaf - with a whole bulb baked into the center. What is there not to love about that? Anyway, I didn't get to try it, so I can't review it - I just will dream about that instead. Rather, I tried out a chocolate brownie. I've been a little disappointed with brownies since I moved to the states, so I thought I would try out a Canadian version, to see if it could compare to the wonder of the brownies sold in London's Borough Market. Well, it didn't - but it was incredibly luscious. Chocolate icing on top and a surprise of biscuit (cookie) threaded through the brownie itself. I do like a bit of texture when I am chowing down. One brownie was probably a bit too rich for one person - but, I was alone - and I do hate seeing food go to waste. It's called taking one for the team, ok?

I really enjoyed the ready to eat sandwiches from here. We were heading out to visit Strathcona…read morePark for a day hike and looking for some tasty sandwiches to eat mid hike for lunch. Cakebread had just what we were looking for. I wish we had more opportunities to come back as they also had a delicious looking selection of baked goods. Highly recommend the turkey croissant sandwich or the prosciutto sandwich on baguette. Both came with a delicious roasted pepper tapenade and carmelozed onion spread.

On a trip to Courtney, The Yellow Deli was highly recommended to us. We thought it looked…read moreinteresting from the outside, and decided to give it a try for brunch. An enchanting little restaurant is apparently known for its sandwiches and deserts. Interesting and home cabin style décor, we received a warm welcome when we arrived and were taken to our table. A couple of minutes after being seated. We waited no time for our server to take our order and had hot coffee within a minute or two. The service was friendly and efficient. The food didn't take long and was superb! The breakfast sandwich was excellent. The bread was made in house, the bacon was divine, and the home-made blueberry muffin was fresh and warm. It was a great experience and live in the Fraser Valley, we have since learned there is a Yellow Deli in Chilliwack.

The Most Charming Breakfast Place in Courtenay…read more I believe whoever was in charge of this location's look and feel was at least partially inspired by Hobbit architecture. It was delightful dining here and the food was pretty good too! My wife ordered the Two Poached Eggs with Whole Wheat Toast & Jelly breakfast, while I created my own sandwich (Montreal Smoked Meat on an Onion Roll with lettuce, tomato, and avocado). I also got a cup of their soup of the day (Cream of Butternut Squash). Everything was delicious. Service was prompt and friendly. And we got to experience what eating breakfast for Frodo & Bilbo Baggins must've been like. Highly recommend if you're in Courtenay and want to get away from the typical run-of-the-mill diner or cafe experience for breakfast.
