    Apple Pie Mimosa

Of course, this wasn't my first time here but I did try some new things off of their seasonal menu. For our drink we decided to try a picture of the apple pie mimosa. It was a tangy but sweet drink that we finished with our meals. I ordered the Apple Crunch French Toast and my bf ordered the Abe Hot Chicken and Biscuits. Both meals were delicious but the French toast was amazing! I'm currently trying to find a recipe to replicate it. Everything complemented each other so well. My server was very helpful and sweet. I was brought out the wrong meal and she made sure that I was brought the correct one and that we were well taken care of. It surprisingly wasn't that busy when we went but it's usually flowing with people. It was perfect for a brunch date. Will return!

Amazing service, drinks and food. Best cheese grits I've ever had. Menu selection was vast and server's knowledge was most appreciated.

First time here and did not disappoint! Brunch was absolutely delicious! Very clean and our server Kate was so sweet. We had Abe Cyclone's to drink and I had the lobster and Brie omelette and my friend had the apple fritter French toast. Both cooked to perfection and are highly recommended. And the loaded grits made with Gouda, bacon and green onion were AMAZING!!! Will be back to try more!!

Love this place! The service was really good and everything came out fast. My only complaints were that the potatoes didn't taste fresh and the gumbo had a slight fishy taste. Other than that, everything else was great and I would still come back!

Another Broken Egg is a place I constantly forget about because I just don't see them often anymore. I was in the area and decided to stop by for pancakes and their lunch duo with fried chicken salad and jambalaya. The pancakes were good, fried chicken salad was nothing special, jambalaya was a pool of oil (the oil was covered by the egg). My server Stacy was sweet, however, she was inattentive, made no table touches, was more concerned about if she was closing today. My issue could have been resolved long before it was if she had checked in. There were tables and floors that needed attention. A server almost slipped on a butter packet that was dropped by a previous server who just left it. Salt and pepper grinders need to be wiped. The server waiting tables directly across from me (black young lady with a long braided ponytail) was great though. I witnessed her constantly check in with her tables, she was personable, smiling, quick on her feet. A couple of people who she checked out complimented her service as well. Should you go here? Maybe. Everyone else appeared to enjoy their visits.

The shrimp n grits is definitely my go to at ABE! My group and I were able to be seated quickly early on a Saturday morning. Our server wasn't good but everything else was. Not my favorite brunch spot anymore but still a good pick.

Our server today was Alex. He was very attentive and also suggested entrées to us. My brunch date had never been here before, but he was very impressed with the shrimp and grits. He got a bloody Mary that he really liked I got an apple mimosa that was delicious. I got the eggs Benedict. Not sure if I would get them again. The ham was very thick but other than that, it was delicious. The breakfast potatoes were a little dry, but I got a ranch on the side. I've been coming here for years and I've never had a bad experience. It's kind of hidden and if you're not familiar with it, you probably would never go. But I encourage you to try out this brunch place. It's so delicious.

For French toast with side of fruits and grits - there two sides were substitutes to meat options

Excellent food and service Love this place - best thing is to get on wait list Their coffee is amazing - they even have a decaf option

Had an overall okay experience -- it wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible either. It was half empty when we went for brunch, but our waitress was awfully slow and we sat there waiting for a bit to order. She also wasn't friendly either. My water glass came with food stains so I asked for a new water, but the waitress didn't take the old glass with the stain away. The food was alright -- the hash brown benedict was too salty, but I did appreciate how crispy it was. The poached eggs were very dense in texture and had no flavor. The side potatoes weren't even remotely warm, just cold. The soft shell scrambler was alright, nothing special. The apricot streusel pancakes were insanely sweet, and the eggs and sausage that came with it were also cold. Given our experience, we're not too inclined to come back. Maybe it was because it was a slower day that the quality of the food wasn't that great, but also it was a Friday afternoon. This place wasn't the worst, but I feel like there are better brunch places around.

Excellent morning cocktails and rotating seasonal menu make this one of our favorite brunch spots in Birmingham!

Carmel iced coffee. We ordered two. They were two different colors, but good.

Today was a bit of an off day. Hubby ordered lobster has with hollandaise. The roasted tomato sauce was just okay. Really soupy and heavy mushroom in the hash. The potatoes were mushy. My chicken and waffles was as expected. The coffee was good, and the server worked to try to compensate the food quality being off.

I went on a Saturday morning when they first opened. It's a fantastic location; the staff offers excellent suggestions. The omelet is very light and delicious, and it is cooked fresh. The building has very good natural lighting. Please stop by and see the staff soon to try the coffee. This was a good visit.

Tiramisu French Toast, very solid seasonal dish! Get it while it last!

Wooden City is located off Morris Avenue in a shared row of older buildings. There's a private parking lot behind the building, and you can have your parking ticket validated at the restaurant. The location and vibe on Morris Avenue are really neat and uniquely Birmingham. It's a great addition to the city's dining scene. Our party of four started with drinks and shared three appetizers: the Bread and Butter, Heirloom Tomatoes, and Steak Tartare. My favorite was the Bread and Butter. It's house-made focaccia served with a sun-dried tomato spread and an oil dipping sauce. The bread was amazing. For my entrée, I ordered the Peel-and-Eat Shrimp from the appetizer menu. It was fabulous--a generous portion of large shrimp that were perfectly seasoned and grilled. For dessert, we shared the Chocolate Mousse and Blueberry/Blackberry Crisp. The crisp was my favorite. It was served hot with a scoop of vanilla ice cream--an excellent way to finish the meal. While Wooden City doesn't have a large menu, everything we tried was very well done. I definitely recommend giving it a try, but don't be in a hurry. The service was a little slow during our visit.

We snagged some seats at the bar and had some drinks and shortly after that, our table was ready. And they were able to keep everything on one check, which was nice. No need to settle the tab and start a new one at the table. And the old fashioned I had was delicious. For food, we started with the Hungarian Hot Stuffed Peppers. These were pretty good and the heat gradually snuck up on you as you ate them. I don't know if it was because the heat was more intense as you worked your way towards the stem or just a gradual burn. Either way, these were good and worth the heartburn later. The thick focaccia helped with the burn a little. Speaking of heartburn, the pepperoni pizza may have contributed a bit to that too, but again, totally worth it. The cup-and-char pepperoni was charred nicely as were the edges and bottom! I love a nice bottom! These were easy to share between two of us. Service was amazing from the bartender to the waiter to the uber driver (who didn't really count, but nice job, man). We felt welcomed and I can see why the place was crowded on a Tuesday evening.

I ordered the seafood pasta, and you could immediately tell the pasta was homemade. It was fresh, perfectly cooked, and the seafood was beautifully prepared. My daughter had the spaghetti, and my husband ordered the Waldorf salad, which was just as thoughtfully put together. Our waitress also recommended the hummus and house pickles, and I'm so glad we listened. Both were fresh, unique, and the perfect way to start the meal. From the food to the service, everything felt polished without being pretentious. It was one of those meals where every dish was executed with care and attention to detail. Overall, The Essential was such a pleasant surprise and proof that you can find five star dining experiences in the most unexpected places. The interior has a nostalgic, warm vibe and would be a great setting for a date night. Our server was awesome! He was friendly, attentive, and recommended some great food and drink options. I also really enjoyed the open-kitchen concept, as I always like being able to see the food being prepared. My only concern was with a couple of things I noticed in the kitchen. Since the kitchen is completely open and visible to guests, I think extra attention should be given to sanitation and overall presentation. I noticed one of the cooks drinking while preparing food, and another wiped his nose with his arm while working. Although he didn't use his hand, it still left me feeling a little uneasy. When guests can see directly into the kitchen, those small details really matter. Aside from that, we enjoyed our experience, and I do think this is a place worth trying at least once. The atmosphere, service, and recommendations from our server were definitely highlights of our visit.

We were told the tables were reservation-only, which was completely understandable, so we sat at the bar. Shortly after sitting down, we were told we were in the wrong barstools and needed to move so there wouldn't be an empty seat between customers. Not a huge deal on its own, but it set the tone for a night where the service felt more overbearing than welcoming. I ordered a nonalcoholic Heineken, and when I finished it and declined another, the bartender jokingly called me a "little bitch." He laughed and was clearly trying to be funny, but we didn't have that kind of rapport and it just came across as uncomfortable and unprofessional. My wife wasn't feeling well that evening, so she ordered chicken and was only able to eat a few bites. When the bartender noticed she wasn't finishing it, he joked that he could take it home as scraps for his dogs. Again, probably intended as humor, but it didn't land well at all. I ordered the burger, which was around $20. I wasn't asked how I wanted it cooked, and unfortunately it came out extremely overcooked, to the point that parts of it tasted burnt. Any one of these things individually probably wouldn't have bothered us enough to write a review, but altogether the experience felt uncomfortable, and not particularly hospitable. We were hungry, on a time crunch before a concert, and mostly just wanted a good, relaxed meal. For the price and reputation, we expected a much better experience.
