They were about a 50 minute drive from me but it didn't matter to me at all. It was good to go out on a Saturday morning once a month to get my meals. The first time I went, they were still open for assembly sessions. Everyone was very friendly and Jackie (the only employee I can remember chatting with) was grateful that I looked them up. Subsequent months later, I picked up my meals as they were closed for assembly sessions. I would pull up, open my trunk, and give them a call. They would bring out my meals in bags and I would be ready to go. I really appreciate them keeping open even though they have to put in extra work just so I could have my great, easy to cook meals. I'm not a good cook and I don't really like to cook so Dream Dinners has been a lifesaver for me these past 5ish years. The Flemington location is top-notch and I would recommend to anybody who wants meal kits but doesn't want to pay the high prices that places like Blue Apron charge to deliver to your house. Not the easiest to find or to park. The team at Grape Escape prepared some very nice appetizers and buffet dinner complimented by their various wines. I enjoyed their Cabernet Savnignon which took a bit to get used to. Ed Ventura is the owner and wine master. He knows what he's doing and was able to answer questions from a very inquisitive group. Basically they don't sell bottles of wine. What they do is provide training and classes for wine making as well as the opportunity to make your OWN wine using their facility and grapes. The grapes are mostly imported from different regions including South America. The grapes are crushed there and fermented into different types of barrels including American Oak. You can purchase an entire barrel or as little as an 1/8 of a barrel. I don't know the cost, but apparently they have a loyal repeat customer base. You can then bottle off your own brand of wine for social events or private use. I found the entire event to be educational and inspiring.

At the start, i was reserved about committing to a large batch of wine, having received diy wines in the past as gifts that were fit for cooking, at best... So we shared a quarter barrel. I knew when we got to the bottling and tasted some of the rich old vine zin that we had barrel stored for the past 7-8 months, that we didn't order enough. The wine, only in its youthful state, was outstanding, comparable to zins you'd pay $75+ per bottle for in a wine store. And it will only get better with some age and stable storing. We'll begin to enjoy more around the Fall/Winter holidays. We were were going to give this wine as a holiday gift, but decided its better that we serve it and drink it ourselves! We are signing up again for this fall's red crushing and will try some other varietal next, i tasted their cab at the bottling and it was also delicious!

People asked about fat and calorie content, and she told us to take each ingredient and look up the calories for the amount used and add it all up...thanks real helpful. Seems like the sort of thing you should know if you're teaching a low fat cooking class. She then hands out the recipes: they were incomplete with missing ingredients and didn't even put how much you need to use. Then we are served the dishes - bland, and the mango rice definitely did not have any mango in it. But here's the kicker - she announces that she forgot to bring the food. Seriously. So she says she is going to tell us how to make it and will email us a video of her cooking this crappy bland food. She's also got a real thing with Trader Joe's and most of the ingredients can only be bought there (i.e., a special Trader Joe's brand of dressing). Needless to say I walked out and I will be demanding my money back. I feel sorry for the others who wasted this money buying the groupon.

Joe, the owner, will talk your ears off and give you step by step directions for how to make beer. He's very friendly and knowledgable, and if you wanted to do it on the cheap, you could, or you could be like us and buy both the brewing kit ($75) and whichever beer ingredients you wanted as a kit (Russian Imperial Stout--$55). Most of the beers, btw, aren't so pricey, but we're fans of dark, rich, knock you on your butt beers. As a bonus, we found out that if we let the second fermentation go for 2 months, it will be smoother. And in 2 months I'll be able to drink again--YEAH! Perfect timing! All of the raw ingredients and supplies are sold here too, from buckets and bottles to bins of hops for your own special blend. And if you have any questions during the process, Joe will give you his email in order to answer your questions. It's nice to have an expert on hand who will let you know where the process is flexible and where it isn't, and how to use the measuring instruments so that you aren't completely overwhelmed once you unpack everything at home. Tons of cheap Chinese American dishes like found in most corner take out shops, plus for dinner the addition of a few higher end items like steamed crayfish, shrimp, crab and fresh fish fillets in various spicy or sweet/sour sauces. These last ones are only available after the lunch service is over and the crowd rushes in for supper. Very large dining room accommodates several hundred people at once, and the buy in is only $13.99 for lunch and $18.99 for dinner. Price is right. Beyond all that, there is also more traditional American fare like chicken wings and fries for the cuisine challenged. Too, plenty of sushi and desserts from jello to cheesecake, not to mention a chocolate fountain when it is working. Problem is that almost everything is cool when eaten from sitting around on the serving tables so long, and the quality of the kitchen is about the same as found in most corner Chinois Americano houses; which is to say, mediocre at best. However, if you focus on the seafood and shellfish, you may feel satisfied. I saw many people with plate fulls of crab and cray or shrimp, up to their elbows in breaking shells and sucking out the meat with abandon. Those folks really got their money's worth. The rest of us, well, it was a closer proposition. But, witnessing how into it my lady was (at least three plates piled high with broken and crushed crab shells), I suspect we will be visiting this old joint with some frequency, along with the thousands of others who can't get enough of too much.
