Terrible call center, who make the appointments, and have no accountability. I made an appointment three months ago (today was the soonest I could get in) for the MedStar Shah Medical Group at Annapolis Endocrinology Medical Center. I called a month ago to confirm my appointment (and they had it then), but when I called yesterday to double-check, I was told they did not have an appointment for me. The lady at the call center I spoke to put me on hold for over ten minutes saying there was a problem and she needed help. When she came back on the phone I was told that it was their error-someone there started a chart for me but never put the appointment in the system. Strange that I was able to confirm my appointment back in June. The call center sent a note to the actual office manager asking her to call me back. I called back to the call center to try to talk to someone higher up. I was then told that the office manager would not be calling me back because it wasn't her problem. When I asked to talk to the call center leader I was put on hold and then told they were in a meeting. I was furious and told them that I better hear back from them before they left for the day, but, surprise, I never received a call. The next appointment available isn't until December. So, because of their error, they expect me to wait another four months. This lack of accountability is unacceptable. read more

Dr. Makonnen has no respect for women. He diagnosed me with a condition and refused to explain what the condition was. Basically told me to just accept his diagnosis without question because he was the doctor and I am not. I was warned by others but decided to give the office a chance anyway, that was a BIG mistake. I am shocked at the negative reviews of this practice! I have nothing but good things to say about it. Dr. Cantero was THE BEST! I was NEVER berated or "yelled at" by her! There must be an imposter! The only negative comment is that the patients were not informed that the group was sold to MedStar Health (Shah Medical Group). For a big corporation, the website is LACKING! Cannot schedule an appt. or contact anyone in my specific practice, cannot refill prescriptions, etc. They need to invest some of that money in a web designer to get their act together. That being said, I am very happy with Dr. Makonnen. Very personable and professional. The office staff didn't seem to change so that's good. My wait is never long. And, again, if it was easier to contact them, it would be perfect. read more

Office staff, including the manager, were insensitive to my critical health needs and my appointments got put off after going in for an emergency. They are either ignorant, uneducated, lacking in work experience and mismanaged to make decisions. Doctor is too busy to deal with anyone critical. They were better years ago, but not now. read more

In my experience/opinion, Annapolis Endocrinology, has been unethical in their visits/billing. My 20 year old daughter had an appointment with them to review blood work done by LabCorp or Quest. She called in advance of her appointment to be sure that the blood work had been received and it was good for her to come in. (There was a previous visit where she went and the blood work was not done, so she was double checking.) She was told yes. When she arrived for the appointment, the blood work had been lost. There was nothing to review or to go over without the blood work. The doctor still charged for visit even thought my daughter asked the office to waive the charge. She was given the run around being passed back and forth between office members, and the Dr. herself. She spoke with the Dr. and the doctor refused to waive the office visit charge. She called the COO of MedStar and left multiple messages, without the courtesy of a return call. I then called the same COO and let him know that he now has lost TWO patients, my daughter and myself. read more

Great staff, friendly and helpful. Never wait long, in fact you hardly have your butt in the chair and they are calling you back. I am shocked to see the reviews on here. The NP and Dr were very nice and have me on Track with a medication plan. She asked what I had for breakfast and when I told her she said "never eat that again. It's too many carbs." She was right but not mean about it. I feel so much better since I've been going there and will continue. read more

I have been with this practice about 10 years and am sad to say that will be ending. I have even seen almost every doctor in the office with hopes of meeting my healthcare needs in one location, despite the fact that I now live almost an hour away. The lack of professional courtesy from the front office in addition to the lack of communication from the practice as a whole has definitely led to their decline. I got a card in the mail telling me to reschedule but NOT mentioning that my doctor had left the practice (2nd in a row to do so); when they called me to reschedule THE DAY OF my new appointment, they didn't even leave me a message.. But instead rushed me in for an earlier appointment, only to sit and wait and be told there was a chance I wouldn't be seen. It's truly a shame, there have been amazing doctors to practice at the two Annapolis offices I'd regularly gone to, but it's no longer feasible to spend almost 2 hours driving to not be seen after the office fails to do their part.. Nor communicate via phone or other means to save everyone's time. I hope they can eventually turn things around, the facility is great, but new management is definitely a must. read more

Dr. Cantero enjoys power and judgement. My blood sugar was out of control - I made an appointment with an endocrinologist. I had discovered my diabetes a few years earlier and had a doctor who gave me no training on the issue - just started giving me meds. Eventually I wound up on insulin, but needing more training and support. Diabetes isn't about just taking pills - it's a lifestyle. It's eating correctly (or at least, not poorly =). It's at least walking for exercise. Dr. Cantero scoffed at my blood sugar, commenting on the fact that I was on the best insulin (lantus/humalog), shaking her head and demeaning me with her eyes, body language and words. I will never forget how small she attempted to make me. Upon leaving and speaking to the nurse at the desk on the way out, I mentioned that Dr. Cantero was rude. She, the nurse that worked there, responded that some patients indicated Dr. Cantero was wonderful while the rest were degraded as well. I have advised other diabetics of the situation I had with Dr. Cantero and will continue sharing my experience for as long as I see that she's in business. The doctor there is so mean! When I first saw her, she proceeded to yell at me about my weight. She said that if I was serious about it, I would have gotten the stomach surgery already. Anyone who needs to see an endocrinologist, please stay away. I'm going to Baltimore next week to see a doctor who knows what he is doing. read more

My initial experience (3 years ago) was 5+ stars, but it only went downhill from there. I loved Dr. Cantero my first visit. She was great, and I'm sure she still is!! But after your first visit, they only have you meet with nurse practitioners unless you DEMAND to see a doctor. One visit we specifically asked to see a doctor. They sent in an NP, and we refused to speak with her. We asked for a doctor again, and reminded them we didn't mind waiting. They sent in ANOTHER NP! It's like they weren't hearing my mom and I. We refused to have her conduct the appointment as well, and finally the doctor came in. Sidenote: Their office staff used to be a bit rude, but it seems like they're a little better after possibly replacing a few people. My very last visit (a few months ago), I knew I needed to be done with them when a doctor I had NEVER met before came in thinking we knew each other. She barged into the room with no introduction, and I thought: hmm, pretty rude for a doctor who's meeting with a new patient... then she proceeded with the appointment and said something to the effact of, "we talked about this last time, right?." NO I have never met you until now! So then the lack of introduction made sense because she thought we had met before. I was amazed... she truly thought I was her patient. Talk about disorganization and passing patients around. By the way, before she came in an NP told me I needed to take my new medication only as needed. But when the doctor came in and mentioned the dosage, she said I had to take it religiously twice a day! Soooo they think their NPs are so great and helpful, but I received complete misinformation! AND to make matters worse, when I told the doctor the NP told me a different dosage, she brushed it off!! Had I only seen an NP that day (like usual) I would've been taking the completely wrong dosage, which really could've been detrimental to my health!!! So, I'm officially done Annapolis Endocrinology. Endocrine issues are far too sensitive and serious for them to be so disorganized, negligent and unprofessional, treating patients like numbers on a chart. read more

The wait time (with an appt) is unreasonable. Most scheduled appts run close to an hour late. The only way to get bloodwork results is to make an appt; they won't give you the info by phone. This means you come in for 1.5 hours to have 5 min with a NP or Dr who gives you your results. I've stayed with the practice long enough and my patience has run out. For example I had a 3 pm appt and here I sit in the office at 4:25 pm waiting for the doctor. My advice: choose a different practice. read more

Do not go to this practice! I was told by my GP to see an endocrinologist, so I made an appointment with Dr. Cantero. She had all my lab work, medical history, etc. She told me I was a hypochondriac and because I was skinny there was nothing wrong with me! However less than a week later I went into hypoglycemic shock and fainted! I saw a different physician who actually LISTENED TO ME and read my chart and diagnosed me as hypoglycemic. I had heard horrible things about Annapolis Endo before, but was willing to give them a chance. HUGE MISTAKE NEVER USE THIS PRACTICE IF YOU VALUE YOUR HEALTH! read more

My experience here was just awful. I was there for two hours and most of the time was on waiting for the doctors. Poor planning and the doctors do not take in accountable the patients time. Both Nurse Practitioner and Doctor were very arrogant and rude. Never once consider how they were making the patient feel. I was very upset during my appointment and they could have careless and just sent me on my way to get more treatment done. I would not recommend this place and if you do need a Endocrinologist, please go somewhere else, drive as many hours as it takes. You will be happy you did. Was referred for multiple abnormal lab results (cortisol, ACTH, potassium, calcium issues) Waited 3 months for the appointment. Dr. Cantero came in after a PA "interviewed" me. She barely sits down and proceeds to tell me that she can tell just by looking at me that I am not ill. That especially with white people the skin will darken and mine hasn't and so she can tell I don't have adrenal issues. She hadn't even LOOKED at me yet. She had just sat down which made it feel like somehow she had made up her mind before entering the room. It was very abrupt, A matter of fact... but without facts. I was told that fatigue isn't a symptom of adrenal issues.... that there would be many more symptoms. But yet I HAD other symptoms, I never said I was there for JUST fatigue. I had a LIST of things going on such as low blood pressure, dizziness, body aches, headaches, weight loss, including multiple abnormalities in my bloodwork that SHOULD warrant a closer look. Maybe it isn't my adrenals, which is totally fine.... but SOMETHING is not right. It is not normal to have high ACTH levels, or high calcium levels etc. I could tell if I tried to clarify or ask any questions it was an annoyance. Then she starts telling me how the only thing that really concerns her is the chance I have of developing metabolic syndrome because I have in her opinion higher than she would like fasting glucose and high triglycerides. What doesn't make sense with that statement is that my fasting glucose was within NORMAL range. it was NOT high, it was within the normal limits. And my triglycerides were 151 and the range is up to 150 so I was 1 point over. WHOA! 1 point over, and we are alarmed? ALL my other levels were great, my good cholesterol was super high which is great, and my bad cholesterol was low. I can't believe that was her focus. Plus I have lost 60 pounds and my #'s are actually way better, and much improved. But she didn't ask about that history at all to know this. *** She is the type of doctor that makes SNAP judgements and doesn't care to ask questions and research and understand the history. I WOULD NEVER EVER RECOMMEND HER I was a corpsman in the Navy and the #1 rule in patient care.... LISTEN.. the patient history is the MOST important thing. This gives you those subtle clues to help you figure out what should be a concern or not, like this 1 point over in triglycerides is actually a HUGE accomplishment for me and very good! SO frustrating to wait 3 months for this... NOTHING. read more

Never (and I mean NEVER) go to this practice. This is the fourth endocrinologist I've seen since having my thyroid removed in 2008 (military, we move around a lot) and this entire practice is the worst by far. My genetic condition is exceedingly rare and I never expect a new endocrinologist to know what I'm talking about but I do expect them to take me at my word and do their research in order to provide me with the best possible care. Apparently, that is simply too much to ask with this practice. One doctor at this practice started our conversation by being clear that she had never heard of my particular genetic mutation and then followed it up by saying that I was clearly wrong in thinking I was at risk for adrenal cancer . . . when you don't know anything about my condition, perhaps you should do a little research before telling me I don't know what I'm talking about. I have been cancer free for almost 8 years now. Despite this fact, they have been sending me in to get an ultrasound done of the area every 6 months. This is completely unnecessary and a comply waste of time and money. Perhaps they are trying to gouge the insurance company because there is absolutely no reason to send me in at all, let alone every 6 months. The practice was always mediocre but the last 3 months have been the absolute final straw. I went in for my appointment in early November. I had my toddler with me because he had a cough and I didn't want to risk getting my sitter's children sick. I brought snacks and toys to keep him occupied but we sat there waiting for almost 2 hours. Apparently my normal doctor was taking longer than normal with a new patient (which is completely understandable and acceptable). After asking repeatedly how much longer I'd be left waiting, they finally sent in a different doctor. It was only a follow up appointment and fairly quick. Afterwards, the doctor insisted I sit and wait for a blood draw request (rather than simply mailing it to me later). I told her that it was well past my toddler's nap time and we needed to leave. Her response: "Maybe next time, don't schedule your appointment during nap time." Are you f---ing kidding me?! That is a completely unacceptable response. I don't care what your title is or how much you get paid. I scheduled my next appointment for this past month, three months after my appointment in November. The office sent in a prescription to my pharmacy for only 1 month of my medication, with no refills. I didn't realize this until I only had a couple of days left and called in the refill request to my pharmacy and was informed I'd have to contact the doctor. After fighting with the doctor's office to have a refill request sent over (that in itself was a headache), they sent over another month with NO REFILLS. This office is incompetent and rude. I will be switching doctors and hope they go out of business soon because no one should have to go through this in order to get proper care. read more

I agree with the previous reviews. You will wait up to 60 mins for your appt. But to be fair, the last time I went I did notice my wait was only about 30 mins. When I first started going to this practice, the front desk people were awful - rude, cold, and would make mistakes with you appt times. Just had my appt. was quick and precise. Dr was friendly and listened to what I said and voiced his opinion as well. I've seen a few endo' sober 8 years and I left feeling good about my experience and where I'm going now! Which hasn't happened in awhile. Wait time was 30 minutes total til he came in. Was checked in and taken to a room within 10 minutes. For me totally acceptable. Ladies at the front desk had smiles and were personable as well as who took me back for vitals. I don't even think they deserve 1 star. I have been going there for two years to track nodules on my thyroid, and each visit I leave mad. Not because of discussions with a particular doctor, but because of the way I am treated as a patient. Doctor switching, unprofessional front desk, a co-pay and required office visit for normal biopsy results, and essentially being told the doctors time is more important than my time (I live 30 minutes away and work in DC so it's two hours out of my way for a visit). DO NOT GO TO THIS HORRIBLE PRACTICE!! Let me start off by saying if I could give zero stars, I would. First off to start off my appointment, my regular doctor did not even show up. Could they not have called me to reschedule? I then was first "interviewed" by this physicians assistant who seemed nice but was a little harsh with her choice of words. after she left the room, Dr. Cantero entered. Not even a "hi nice to meet you" instead the first thing she says when enters is "you aren't taking your medication correctly"...Now Dr. Cantero unfortunately is the head of this group which means she can not get fired which could be the reason she's unbelievably rude to her patients. She then goes on about how its unfair to her as a doctor to have someone like me as a patient who doesn't know or care about my medication. Now a little background is I was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 14, I am now 21. I take my medication EVERY SINGLE DAY! I am very worried for my health which is why I make sure to always take my medication. She then proceeded to say that because I'm young she knows I don't care about what I'm doing with the medication. She was so rude and mean to me I almost cried in there. Never should a patient have to go into the doctors and be treated so horribly. She is a horrible person and should not be a doctor. I truly believe no one should continue to go to this practice unless they want to walk out crying and extremely mad. I could go on to say so many awful things about Dr. Cantero but I will leave it at this, she is not meant to be in this profession. read more

Jasmine the person that answered the phone needs customer service training. Her tone and manner in which she speaks is unprofessional. She honestly sounds as if she is preoccupied and that your call is an interruption to her day. I called to cancel and reschedule an appointment. Which I have a right to do. Jasmine asked, so when do you think you can make it in? When I gave her my selection she says well we don't have anything. At that point I'm a little confused because she asked as if the schedule were wide open. I told her to just let me know the next available appointment. Jasmine then responded with a date, but didn't provide a month, as if I should have known what month she was talking about. I think if Jasmine were given the proper training she would have known to let me know what was available to include month, date, and time instead of us playing the guessing game. Jasmine if you read this understand that there are other people out here jobless that would be more than happy to replace you. As the receptionist or first person that patients or potential patients come in to contact with you should be pleasant and helpful no matter what type of day you might be having. You should provide all of the information necessary to handle a request like scheduling an appointment. I hope after this review the doctors at Annapolis Endocrinology that I trust with my care train you properly or replace you with someone that values having a job and does it well. I can only imagine that Jasmine mishandles other responsibilities based on my experience with her taking my call, if the responsibilities go beyond scheduling appointments. read more

After 4 months I have had to finally to give up on this office. I was referred to them by my PCP in December and found to have thyroid cancer. Each time I called and left a message with the nurse's line I had to leave multiple messages to get a return phone call. I had a horrible time getting them to send my ultrasound results and lab work to Johns Hopkins prior to my surgery. Then when I visited after my thyroid was removed I was referred for radioactive iodine ablation which would be done at Washington Hospital Center. At my next visit with Annapolis Endo 2 weeks later I found out that no referral had been sent to Washington Hospital Center - it was like they couldn't remember we had just discussed it two weeks ago! I am now (finally!) set up to to visit WHC next month for RAI and this past week I called Annapolis Endo and left 3 separate messages to make sure they had sent preauthorization status to my insurance company. No response. I finally sent an email basically laying out all my concerns and the fact that when dealing with a cancer diagnosis the last thing you need is added stress from poor management at your doctor's office! That finally got me a return phone call from the head nurse. I also had questions about the lab work they ordered and said that WHC suggested I have additional labwork following RAI. The nurse basically told me they didn't care about those numbers and if I had concerns I could discuss it with my doctor at my follow-up appointment. I plan to be under the care of a new and hopefully more caring endo by that time. I don't know how well Annapolis Endo deals with other patients but if you have thyroid cancer I DO NOT recommend going here! I have been a type 1 diabetic for almost ten years and have seen many endocrinologists for routine check ups. Never in those 10 years have I visited a practice that was so unknowledgeable. The assistants didn't know the basics about insulin usage or pumps (which I have). They do business with Medtronic and since I have an animas pump, they couldn't download my software and didn't know how to help me program new settings. These were only a couple of my issues. I was very dissatisfied with their lack of knowledge and will have to find a new endocrinologist for my needs. read more

I agree that the wait times are excessive, but I wait a long time to see any doctor these days. My complaint is that, once a doctor arrives, she gives the patient five minutes tops. And all the doctors in this practice are very by the books. They are dismissive of symptoms they can't account for by looking at the few tests they are willing to order. They don't seem to care very much for their patients either. While waiting in an examination room, I heard the doctor next door yelling at a patient, accusing her of not trusting her medical expertise. I have certainly felt that lack of trust the other patient was accused of, but I never had the guts to express it. read more

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE I only went to this place cz my PC refereed it. There office service is HORRIBLE. They do not answer the phone because they don't even have one except in their Annapolis Office. They will not return your messages either!! And will try to charge you cancellation fees because they only check their voice mails every 2 hours according to the office staff. I had an appointment and was late cz I got into a fender bender on my way to the doc. I called them and left a message. No one called me back and when I made it to the office they refused to see me even though I was only 30 mins late. I can understand not accommodating people who are late but not showing compassion towards a person who was in an accident is what wall street does and not something your doctor should do. I was only there to get prescriptions and the doctor had said it would be a 5 min appointment to go over my labs and send in the prescriptions during the last visit. For them not to have 5-10 mins for a patient who had an accident and still showed up to their office shows that they don't even deserve to be doctors. They need to be bankers. They are in the wrong business. PLEASE DO NOT PUT YOUR HEALTH IN THEIR HANDS. THEY HAVE NO COMPASSION FOR THEIR PATIENTS!! read more

Admittedly the office staff in this practice used to be entirely indifferent to the point of rude - never mind the consistent 60+ minute waits to be seen! Currently, however, that is not the case. The new office staff is absolutely lovely - truly kind & very helpful (& I only waited a matter of minutes the last time I was there). It is the incredibly angry head doctor who is remarkably arrogant, dismissive, & ill-mannered that is the problem with this office. DO NOT waste your time here. She doesn't want to hear what you have to say - will only talk over you (even when it is your turn to speak) - & then tell you how your symptoms don't exist, because you're too young. smh Oh My God lol I was trying to praise Dr. Cantero with a good review after reading so many unfavoring ones but I have to agree with the other 1-star ratings. This in my 3rd time seeing her within 3 months and again, she didn't bother to ask about insulin-to-carb ratio, bother to make any other adjustments, or inquire about how I was dealing with the prescriptions she assigned me from the previous visit. Per her requests, I brought in any previous pumps or CMG devices with me to my appointment, and after waiting almost an hour after my scheduled appointment time, she makes a slight appearance, telling me that my sugars are terrible and that the 1 month update of my A1c shows no progress. It's only been a month. She tells me that she doesn't want to be responsible for making any more decisions that may put me into ketoacidosis and then upon her leaving to see if a Dexcom rep was in the area to "train me" on how to use another CGM device, she sends her assistant back to my room to inform me that the rep was not available and that there was nothing else they could do to help me (including refilling any prescriptions). I would have appreciated her taking the time to ask any additional questions, dismissing her self with a good bye, scheduling me an appointment with the rep to go over use of the device, informing me of a follow up appointment, something. Nope. Beware. I immediately scheduled any future appoints with a different endo at AAMG as I was walking out the door. read more

I would like to rate the physicians in this practice but we never saw one. My husband and I arrived 15 minutes before our 4pm appointment. Went into the exam room at 4:30. We walked out after 5. Never saw a doctor. Never was told of a delay. I have a strong hunch the doctor had even left. As a healthcare management consultant I probably should have left behind my card. This practice is absolutely terrible. Maybe because these doctors have graduated from some Rough city schools they have lost all manner of care but I have now seen 3 different doctors and have had the same experience with all of them. They are condescending and do not listen to their patients. The doctors send you for lab work upon lab work and don't get their doses correct. I wasn't even able to switch my medication for a comparable without seeing the doctor twice! Shouldn't the doctor be able to read a lab without you and prescribe the medicine you need after you've had a consult with her? They are money-grubbing rude women who believe that their 5 minutes is worth your valuable time. read more

I have been going to Annapolis Endocrinology since my primary care physicians found nodules on my thyroid back in 2013. Due to the increased chance of cancer after a biopsy, they referred me (and my first choice) to Johns Hopkins where I had a total thyroidectomy in 2014 and have been seeing them ever since. The staff is always courteous, I've never had a problem with anyone. They've adjusted my meds several times, once even giving me an immediate appointment when I was having trouble adjusting and called them for advice. I don't mind the NP's seeing me at this point. I do have to state that I always was given an appointment with one of the doctors during my diagnosis and after my surgery for almost a year. My levels are under control now so there's no use in me not having faith that the NP's are monitored by the doctors. The negative reviews puzzle me because I've always had a very good experience here. I highly recommend them. read more

Have hypothyroidism? Don't waste your time here. The doctor couldn't get us out of the door fast enough after taking our money. She didn't listen to anything my wife said, dismissed all the tests we requested (we're paying for out of our own pocket mind you), completely ignored all of her ailments and just really couldn't care less about how she felt. It was hard to believe how arrogant and uncaring she was. As far as she was concerned my wife was making up her headaches, muscle aches, random weight gain. It isn't uncommon for women to have these issues with hypothyroidism but she didn't even waste the time to pretend to care and acted like she was making it all up. The doctor requested her own blood work then had the nerve to mail us the results stating my wife's thyroid was 'perfect'. Really? Well listen to this. Thankfully, before her results came in the mail I had already pulled them online from LabCorp and made an appointment with another doctor. We got lucky and there was a next day cancellation. Guess what? The doctor diagnosed her with hypothyroidism and started her on medication. The very same day. He addressed all of her ailments one by one and even noted some things he didn't like from the blood work and recommended some supplements. Needless to say I called back and cancelled our follow up appointment.
