We stopped in last night and enjoyed an incredible dinner at Anmol. This was our first time there and we didn't know what to expect. Our server was very kind and helped us navigate the menu and help make some suggestions. We ended up ordering 4 dishes and shared them amongst the 4 of us. We ordered the Chicken Biryani, Frontier Chicken, the Afghani Kabab (Chicken Skewers) and the Palak Paneer along with the Mango Lassi to drink. The food was amazing!!! Well seasoned and cooked wonderfully. The aroma and flavor were incredible and we enjoyed every dish. I recommend giving this place a try if you haven't. We will be back soon. read more

This place is excellent. A friend brought me here recently for what he said was the best East Asian food in the Milwaukee. I think he may be right. The small dining area was empty when we arrived at opening time and full by the time we finished. He ordered a lamb korma and said it was amazing. The naan was fresh, warm and fluffy. My malai kofta was light, tasty and had a rich, nuanced sauce. Now I want to try everything on the menu. The food is also halal. You can pull up the menu on your cell phone and vegetarian and carnivorous options abound. No alcohol is served. read more

Pro Tip: Don't worry about ordering too much. The leftovers are even better the next day Anmol is a great restaurant with a lot of vegetarian and vegan options. The curries are packed with flavor and even the basmati rice is flavorful as you can tell by the aromatic spices like whole cloves and cinnamon that you'll want to pick out before eating. This restaurant also offers #halal options for those with dietary restrictions. Prices were fair and I feel like we got a lot of value in quantity and flavor based on what we paid. I will admit that I buy a ton of food and then eat it for lunch all week. Normally I am lazy and have it delivered but today I made a quick stop. I ordered the obligatory Chicken Makhani, Palak Paneer along with chicken pakora. I liken chicken pakora to Indian chicken tenders. The flavor is incredible and I swear I could eat a few orders. I love all of their food but like many other Indian places you have to order rice separately which just doesn't make sense to me at all because Asian restaurants don't charge for rice at all. This spot right here is legit! It's great that Milwaukee has a place that serves Pakistani & Indian Halal cuisine and they don't disappoint. I've ordered from here many times and have always been satisfied with the wide assortment and array of dishes they offer. The Chicken Tikka is one of their most popular dishes and the tandoori masala it's marinated in is rich and flavorful. If you want to try a number of things I highly suggest ordering the Anmol Platter: Chicken Tikka, Chicken Boti, Seekh kabab, and Reshmi Malai. The Vegetable Samosas also rock! Regretfully, I have to give this place 1 star. This used to be my absolute favorite Indian restaurant when I lived in Milwaukee. I've lived in many cities in many states and nothing ever compared. I wished I wouldn't have tainted my memory with this visit. I ordered my usual dish, Shrimp Masala, and it was awful. The once red creamy &red curry was orange and oily. It had zero flavor, smelled funky, and the shrimp tasted off. When I informed the owner, I was simply met with a smug, "nothing has changed" as he walked away. Disappointed is an understatement. On the way back from Madison to Chicago I wanted to stop by Milwaukee for a dinner break. Randomly searched for halal restaurants and Anmol came up as an option with good reviews. At first I thought this is the second restaurant of Anmol in Chicago but the owner confirmed it's not. I didn't have high hopes hearing that but the food quality and service at this restaurant beat all my expectations - chapati, naan, chicken makhani, chicken/goat karahi and bhindi were all great. Even the chai and dessert (gulab jamun) was freshly made and amazing. This is a hidden gem in the area and highly recommended. The best Middle Eastern food I've had in the Midwest! This little restaurant is perfectly located on Historic Mitchell Street and the staff is warm and welcoming. I went here last night and I'm honestly still dreaming about the food. I went with my friend and boyfriend and we got 4 massive dishes to split and each left paying $15. It can't really get any better than that. We had garlic naan (amazing), a chicken app, a veg and a shrimp dish. Sorry I'm not being specific with names. While having dinner they had about 30 take out orders go out of their kitchen. Service is fast, but the quality of food is incredible! Can't wait to spend more time here and most likely have this be my go-to takeout place from here on out! read more

Our first time at Anmol was by chance. We were on a drive to Door County, wanted something Indian and dropped in based on Yelp reviews. An hour later we trooped out - happy tummies and totally wanting to revisit. That first visit we had Garlic Naan, Onion Kulcha, Shahi Paneer and Dal Makhani. Delicious, Comforting and Honest food. We stay 1+ hour away from here but I would make that drive just for their breads - the Kulchas and Naans are really one of the best around here. Soft, not chewy and every bite full of flavor. During another visit recently we had the breads, Channa Dal and Mutton Biryani. The Channa Dal was different but a good kind of different. Mildy tangy, Well spiced and comforting. I could imagine someone lovingly making it in the kitchen. A tad oily but I was ok with that considering the taste. The biryani was good too. Tender meat, Perfect separate long grain rice and a wonderful blend of the masala. If the food won us over, the friendly welcoming service is an added bonus. Anmol is a great place for authentic, fresh and delicious Pakistani food... NOT middle eastern food. There's a big difference. Upon arriving, you'll walk into a small space that's is bustling with people, and the aroma of spices filling the air. When you get here don't expect amazing service- you won't get it here but that's okay. The food makes up for the less than average service. Pro tip: order the Nihari with garlic naan and you'll be pleasantly surprised. I came with a group of 7 during Ramadan and it was really great to see them providing a special table of appetizers and dates for those who were fasting. The spread included rooh-afzah (Rose Drink), chaat (yogurt dumpling), Somosas and fruit. If you're in Milwaukee and like south Asian food, definitely check it Anmol!! read more

One of the best Indian Pakistani food can be found here in the Milwaukee area. My favorite is their mutton and chicken biriyani, mutton handi and hiked korma. They make is decently spicy so it's very enjoyable. I have to add that the food is very rich and therefore can be heavy on your palette. We often get food from here or even get it catered for events. They have a good meat platter as well offering tons of different meats and fishes grilled in the tandoor. The veg food here is not my favorite but this is a meat lovers haven with variety of flavors!! They also have their own parking and usually you do get street parking too. The staff is very friendly and always caters to your needs. Highly recommend coming here for a wholesome delicious meal in the Indian/Pakistani cuisine. read more

Anmol has been on my list of places to try, and my only regret is not trying it sooner! I was able to try this place twice in the last month. First time it was a group order, and second time it was just me. The food is fresh and well-packaged. When ordering online, you can choose your spice level. I went with the most mild option because I wasn't sure how spicy it would be. I will definitely be increasing the spice level next time, since I think the mild/no spice option was true to its description--not spicy at all. Items that I tried both times-- chicken boti, Malai kofta, and chicken biryani. The chicken boti reminds me of a more tender version of tandoori chicken (if that makes any sense). It was very flavorful, and I liked the grilled taste. I never tried malai kofta, and really glad I was introduced to this dish! It has a nice sauce to go with it, so it tastes really good with rice. The chicken biriyani is also delicious. The chicken is tender, fall of the bone, and flavorful. The rice itself has a great texture, and is perfectly seasoned! Please don't forget the naan-- would highly recommend the garlic naan. It has actually pieces of garlic on top of it, which I personally really like. My food had to survive a 20 minute car ride, and the food stayed warm. Additionally, no spills! I think it's fair to say Anmol did a great job with packaging. Definitely plan on coming back again and am looking forward to trying new dishes (although wouldn't mind eating the same thing again). read more

So here's the deal, Anmol is no-frills and damn good food. That's about it. But.... I'll try to elaborate more. It was the first time I've had the paneer grilled and then added to the palak. Hm. I like it when things are different an still "work". It's small in there. I've only ordered takeout. And a thing happened, I started taking to other guests dining. It was fun and nice ;) The next time I was there for takeout same peeps I chatted it up with last time were there again! So we chatted some more. It was fun, again ;) The staff is also pretty conversational when they're not too busy working to get a bazillion takeout orders out the door. I'm ashamed I haven't been back in a long time. While creating an International Dining list, I wondered why Anmol didn't come up. Apparently, it is one of many places I have been to but never reviewed. I failed! I LOVE Anmol. It is my favorite Indian/Pakistani restaurant! I've dined here at least 5 times over the years and the food is always great! Some of my favorite dishes include the Chicken 65, Chicken Korma, and Seekh Kabab. The biryanis and garlic naan are also delicious. Now I have to get back to take photos to post. Ugh! Shame on me for not doing so before. I'm sure I have photos somewhere among the thousands of photos on my phone. :/ The important thing is that I am one more person, among many, that love this place. I was craving one of those ground meat Mediterranean kababs and its not a normal crave for me so I didn't know where to go and I ended up here. The area is a little sketchy but that never stopped me. There is a lot next to the place so parking was easy at noon. To my surprise there was only one person in the place at noon and now I wondered if I made a bad decision. The place is pretty generic looking with brick wallpaper columns and light wood all over except the floor which was dark. This is not a place if the ambiance is as important as the meal but I was getting carry out so I didn't care. I ordered the seekh kabab and a butter naan to fill my crave. The naan was moist with that slight chewy texture. The kabab is three kabobs and was very flavorful with a bright citrus flavor and a creeping hot finish from the jalapeño. The cilantro just pulls all the flavors together in my opinion just plays well with others. There was a salad and a green dressing that came with the kabob, see the pictures. The salad was nothing special until you squeeze the lemon and pour the green dressing on it and then it becomes a bold citrus/spicy bright burst of flavor. I liked the bright fresh citrus favors contrasting with the hot and spicy of the meal and I can see the four star rating. This is definitely a don't judge a book by its cover place because the food was very tasty. I would definitely go back and try some more of the menu. read more

I was working after hours support tonight and thought about ordering in from some place different. Normally on nights like these, I'll order a pizza or Chinese, but tonight, I thought I'd give Anmol a try. Now, it came highly recommended by my boss, about a year ago, and this was the first time I thought I'd take her up on her recommendation. I ought to preface this by saying, I'm normally not the biggest Indian/Pakistani food fan. Normally, I think to eat it only after a bunch of other cuisines. That changed tonight. I ordered qeema samosa, garlic naan, butter naan, and mutton korma. First things first: the qeema samosas. Crispy on the outside, warm, savory filling, I could eat about 12 orders of those. If I were Forrest Gump, they'd be my Dr. Pepper. A million and a half, down the joke-hole. Second: garlic naan. Wonderfully delicate, delightfully garlicky. It was like a head of garlic exploded on top of this naan and I wasn't complaining. Finally the mutton korma. Now, when I was at Brazillian BBQ, I had a lamb pop. That lamb pop wasn't nearly as good as this mutton korma. Everything came together in a wonderful dish and I would gladly order it again. The storefront is a bit small, but the woman working the counter was so nice. I was greeted with a genuine smile, and she already had my food ready. Driving back to Chicago from Wisconsin, in search of random place to eat. Ran in to Anmol and since they had very good reviews on yelp. I decided to give it a shot. Was welcomed very nicely by possibly the owner.. As far as the service, and complimentary papads. It was a good start. Green chutney and sweet chutney were OK. Ordered tandoori roti, and garlic naan. Naan has no garlic on it (no big deal, so didn't bother complaining) roti was a bit chewy.. Also got Chicken biryani and paneer karahi. Chicken biryani was pretty good 4/5 Paneer karahi tasted a bit sour and was pretty oily. They were nice enough to switch it with malai kofta. But didn't taste very good either. Possibly, would like to try more items next time to give them a second chance since they have another franchise in Chicago. read more

I got enough food to piss you off. Paid all that money for a small "platter" that was half done. Halal or not, I'm NEVER going to them again nor do I recommend them. We got delivery- naan, fish pakora, masala fries, Punjabi samosa and Bihari kabab roll. First for all, they put all items in little bags and everything within a big bag. So basically, nothing is sealed or closed, not even folded or stapled to close it off. That was kind of gross The naan was good, fish pakora and fries were okay. Samosa was below average. And the kabab roll was HORRIBLE. Taking a bite, I thought there was cheese inside, but nope, it was the meat that was coated in a spice that was mushy. Literally no texture to the meat whatsoever. Like baby food. That went in the trash. Overall, disappointed. One star for the naan, but would not recommend. read more

Tonight my husband and I stopped for dinner. The food (chicken makhani and Bihari kabob with rice) was wonderful. We also had Gilman jamun for dessert. It was a popular place with people coming in and out for take out and half the seat full at 7:15 on a Wednesday night. The service was above great. We will come again! read more

I was engrossed in a newspaper while enjoying my meal when I suddenly became aware of a loud commotion. I looked up to see my waiter standing by the kitchen door shouting across the restaurant. With dismay I realized he was shouting at me. Waiter: KYA YEH AAP KO PASAND AYA? Me: Huh? Waiter: KYA YEH AAP KO PASAND AYA?!! Me: I'm sorry, I don't understand. Waiter: FOOD, HOW IT IS? I wanted to reply, "This mutton korma is amazing! How in the world do you make it so flavorful? And this naan is so pillowy soft; it's among the best I've ever tasted." But, all I managed to get out was, "It's good, thank you." Later, as I was paying the bill, I was tempted to tell the waiter, "Dude, it's not cool to shout across a restaurant like that. And it is really poor form to stare over a customer's shoulder as he totals up a credit card receipt with your tip." But then I thought to myself, "Who am I to deprive future customers of an authentic Pakistani dining experience?" So, I didn't say a word. Not sure why I didn't put it together before yesterday, but! Anmol is a mere (maybe) 6-7 blocks from my house. GUESS WHAT EVERYONE GUESS WHO IS GOING TO TAKE ALL YR DUKEDOMZ. (It's not even a question, so it doesn't warrant a question mark, period.) I can haz, because sweet Peter Paul & Mary. Holy nutsack. Oh my gah. It's because it's all true. The Chicken Makhani? Delicious, tender, amazing... I've never had chicken cooked more perfectly from any restaurant ever. That sauce! Creamy, flavorful, buttery, and even a touch spicy. The chana dal? Flavorful, complex, lentil-y goodness. You won't regret it. The palak paneer? Killer, killer, killer. An aside: I like paneer a lot because you can add it to a bit of basmati before going in for the kill on any other dish and it sort of acts as the most delicious catalyst that helps to create an all-encompassing, perfect bite. The food at Anmol is amazing. We got it takeout, and the guy behind the counter? Pretty nice! (I expected complete and total disinterest based upon other reviews, but was very pleasantly surprised.) Oh Anmol, how I love you....from your grubby dining room to your inconsistent (but still friendly) service. I dream about your biriyani and chana dal... We've been making Anmol a regular stop lately and the food has never been anything short of excellent. They don't skimp on the spices either - I'm forever picking whole cardamom, cloves, bay leaves etc out of the biriyani which is the best I've ever had. I feel like you're either going to love Anmol or hate it. You'll love it: *If you like Indian and Middle Eastern and want to try something in that ballpark *You're a meat eater (see below). They are proud that all meat served here is Halal and that their chickens are hand fed by Amish. I'm serious. *You like hole in the wall, cheap, slightly sketchy places *You aren't bothered by somewhat awkward service, takeout menus standing in for the real thing or a complete lack of atmosphere *If you go regularly - it seems like they warm up to you after a few visits. *You want something completely unique. Brains masala? They've got it. You'll hate it if: *You're on a date. They've replaced the "100% stains" carpet for wood floors recently but if Milwaukee had a contest for the Least Romantic Restaurant, Anmol would be a finalist. *You are a vegetarian. Hate is a strong word but there's only a few veggie choices here as most Pakistani dishes are meat based. *A little grubbiness freaks you out. I've never had any "issues" after eating here (unlike, for example, a upmarket spot that rhymes with "Naxie's") I'll leave you with this...I'm not a leftovers person. I dutifully take them home, let them sit in the fridge for a week or so and then quietly dump them. Sometimes the star system fails. The food here is excellent, and cheap, the best dal in town, tasty biriyani when they have it, and if you ask they'll make any of their dishes nice and hot and spicy, cab driver style. In fact, you often will find cab drivers parked out in front. Much cheaper than the nicer atmosphere Indian restaurants in town, and yes the neighborhood looks a little scary, but it's not really that big a deal, you can sit down and eat in here. But why only two stars? Well, the service is really incredibly, astoundingly, unbelievably, bad. So bad, I've gone back because it's entertainingly bad service, sit-com level exaggerated bad service, so bad, I went back to see if it was really as bad as I remembered. If you call in your order, they find the oldest man who can't speak English to take your call. Even if you're ordering the food as written on the menu, he will make you repeat your order, piece by piece, a good dozen times, and still screw it up. They won't put your to-go order in tiffin to save on non-recyclable packaging, in spite of the fact that they're all obviously from Pakistan, they act like they would never deign to use traditional tiffin. They won't apologize when they screw up your order, it's always the customer's fault. They don't like to talk to women. Did I mention it's the best dal in town? The service is so poor, I can't really recommend this restaurant except for the few of you out there who 1) love Indo-Pak Halal food, 2) don't like paying the overpriced bills you get at the two nice Indian restaurants, 3) aren't afraid of the non-White people you'll encounter on Historic Mitchell Street, 4) have a strong sense of the absurd, watched a lot of Seinfeld, and can be entertained by really bad service, and 5) know what I mean when I say, "authentic cab-driver Indo-Pak food." Update: We've been experimenting with Anmol, the service is better when you go as a couple, let the man do all the ordering, and eat there. If you want the food to go, don't order ahead of time, send your husband or butler to order and pick up the food (with a book, or kill some time shopping next door at their supermarket). That can be entertaining as you can watch how, out of the many people who work there, they find the oldest, least fluent-in-English fellow to answer the to-go phone in food orders! Also, double check what they are selling, freshly made in the supermarket. They sell fresh roti for a dollar a (big) piece in the restaurant to go, but sometimes, they have 8 freshly made roti in a plastic bag for sale in the front of the supermarket for 5$. Same with the deserts, like golub jamun, it's freshly made but refrigerated in the supermarket for less than they charge to go in the restaurant, but either way you need to microwave it after dinner anyway. The supermarket also carries much higher quality chili, turmeric, Indian tea, cumin, and some other spices that South Asians use frequently, than you find in regular or even upscale supermarkets. Just be very careful when you do open the plastic bag of red chili powder, it is dangerously potent. I keep a bag handy for home defense instead of a shotgun. read more
