I had the privilege of joining Saffron for a night taste testing their new spring menu and let me tell you - it was insanelyyy delicious! Saffron remains one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in MKE I love so many things about it. The ambiance is spot on, moody, yet energetic. Their cocktails are always ahhhmazing. Each dish that comes out is somehow better than the last, there's not one thing on the menu that disappoints. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, offering great recommendations when we are choosing between items. It's a great spot to go with a larger group so you can try lots of dishes! It's not impossible to get a reservation which I appreciate, but it's always booked/lively. The food presentation only enhances the experience, but the flavors and textures are really what make this menu shine. We were seated right away but we had yo wait. then we observed staff members actually fighting amongst themselves and we were seated for almost 15min. 4different servers were changed for us, there is no level of training or communication amongst themselves. Came here two years ago when the restaurant was fairly new for Father's Day brunch, the food was amazing. We loved each and everything that we ordered. And today we are back here after two years and the food is not even 1% close to what we had two years ago. The service was horrible. We wete given one brunch menu and we asked if they have a naan or any kind of bread, the server told us NO and then we heard them serving naan, chicken biryani and other things that were not on the menu and when we inquired, they said oh yeah, we have another menu which was not given to us and now this other menu is a full day menu. What are we as a customer we supposed to know there are two menus? The second menu had all the items that normally a person would order at Indian Restaurants. Their chole Bature number one in the country. According to me today they were one of the worst Chole Bature i had. Railway Anda curry was horrible. It was supposed to come with Maska bun but came with burnt Pav. Paneer tikka wrap was not great too. It was served in frozen parantha. 4 different servers served on our table and none of them knew what was going on. Each time different person came, we gad to start over again as they had no idea what we ordered. Came here to celebrate my friend's birthday after hearing so many good things about this place, and it definitely lived up to the hype. They book up pretty fast, so reservations are a must. Parking is downtown style, so you'll have to find your own, but that's expected for the area. The food and drinks were spot on. They offer such a unique variety of cocktails, and the presentation is honestly next level. One drink came in a tall tube with bubbles like a science experiment, another had smoke, and one had a bubble on top, super fun and creative! Even though Chicken Tikka Masala wasn't listed on the actual menu, they do offer it, which made me so happy since it's one of my favorites. We ordered it spicy... and when I say spicy, I mean SPICY. My girl friends loved it, but my palate might need a little refresher after that heat lol. They did bring us a side of yogurt to balance the spice, which helped. The flavors were incredible fresh, bold, layered with spices and depth. We also ordered garlic naan, which was delicious. It comes with two pieces per order, so we ended up getting a few more because it was that good. The Gunpowder Calamari was another hit, crispy, well seasoned, with a flavorful sauce at the bottom of the cup. Inside, the restaurant is beautiful. Perfect lighting, stunning decor, and although the space is a bit narrow, it doesn't feel cramped at all. We were seated near that back and loved the ambience. It's perfect for romantic dates nights, birthdays, or a nice dinner with friends. The rice was seasoned perfectly too, which tied everything together. For drinks, we ordered the Elderflower Blossom cocktail (with the bubble), the Saffron Old Fashioned, and the Ooogy Lava Lamp 2.0 (longer drink photo) all were creative and delicious. For her birthday dessert, we got the Argoori Gulab Jamun, and it came out with a sparkler, which made it feel extra special! Very nice allocation at downtown and have a fine dining setting. If I could do a simple comparison, this is more like PF Chang for chinese food. Very nice setting with very good selection of traditional dishes. Great presentation and modified for the local tastes. I do have a crave towards goat curries, dosa and Biriyanis. Saffron is really good with those but lack a bit kick for me. If butter chicken is your favorite dish, you'd enjoy here. If you want a fine dining with Indian food, this is a great place too. We made a reservation through OpenTable on a busy Friday night. However, when we arrived, our table was ready quickly. The service was attentive, but not hovering, which made for a relaxing meal.. The portions are perfect for sharing.I thought vodka and chai tea served in an elegant teacup was hilarious and delicious. We had the lamb dish, fig naan and the sweet potato dessert. Love the food and had excellent service this time with Javier! To start, we ordered the Truffle Lamb Keema Sliders and Gunpowder Calamari. The sliders were very tasty and the buns were nice a crispy to contrast the soft meat inside. I didn't really notice any truffle flavor, but the pickled onions were perfect for the meatiness of the lamb. A great start to our meal! The calamari was crunchy and served in such a cute lil pot. I was thinking that a dipped sauce would be nice, but there was a small spread across the bottom of the pot. I think it would have been nice on the side so I could dip each piece, and because there didn't seem to be much at all on the bottom. For my main, I got the Branzino Malabar Curry. It was a delicious fish with a nice pour over table-side presentation. Not spicy, but very flavorful and plenty of fish and sauce for each scoop of rice. M'lady got the Saffron Butter Chicken, a classic choice! The chicken was moist and flavorful, with big chunks being served. She ordered it with Butter Naan and enjoyed each handheld bite dipped in the rich sauce. As our past birthdays have been, we had an excellent meal on our visit. We did not receive a birthday treat, but I account that to me rushing the process to get on out of there, so no worries there. I fear I am running out of new items to try! We saw on their social media that they were doing an Indian style Thanksgiving meal that you could pre-order. Let me tell you... We will be doing this again. Not only was it delicious, but it was the most flavorful Thanksgiving meal I've ever had and has renewed my faith in Thanksgiving meals. My wife and I just had a delicious brunch this Sunday at the quaint restaurant, Saffron. IMHO MKE's best restaurants are Indian. We have the amazing India Garden, Taste of India, and the outstanding Nawabi Hyderabad House in Brookfield. Now, we would like to add Saffron Modern Indian Dining to this illustrious list. The place is in a beautiful early 20th century brick building overlooking the river. Everything is elegant and perfectly appointed. But, the real star is the food. So let's talk about Saffron... AMAZING!! We've talked about it for a while and my son's Indian co-workers highly recommended it so we made reservations for Mother's Day lunch. This was a 3 course pre-fix menu with several choices. Everything we ordered was delicious and we tried to choose several different options. The dishes were all beautiful. We ordered several of the craft cocktails including some of the non-alcoholic options. We weren't huge fans of the dessert but it was presumably a more traditional Indian dish and more likely just not our taste. The service was prompt even though they were very busy. Went here on a Tuesday night. We ordered the samosas and crispy cauliflower for the small plates - both were delicious! Ordered the buttered chicken for the main entree and it was melt in your mouth. Dessert was assorted Kulfis which reminded me of a delectable fancy popsicle and the chocolate coffee stones. Those were so fun - bite into chocolate and a burst of coffee in your mouth. A couple of things: How are you going to charge $30 for butter chicken and not give utensils for To-Go.... The Chicken is the star. I appreciate the quality of the chicken and the way they prepped it. Butter Chicken is tender but the rice was cold and a little tough. If the rice was steaming it would have just complemented the Butter Chicken. The sauce was a little of the sweeter side. Overall, this place does get packed. Saffron is an upscale, high quality Indian dining experience. It is quite expensive but they can get away with it due to the lack of quality Indian options in the area. Saffron has nailed the ambience and presentation of food. They also deliver on quality. One of the dishes I tried was the butternut squash Bharta (spinoff of Bhaigan bharta) and it was phenomenal. I will definitely be back to try their chefs tasting menu which ends up being worth it when considering their prices, 70 bucks for a small plate, entree, and dessert. If you're new to Indian cuisine the Butter Chicken is a can't miss. Anytime I take a new guest, this is the go to order and they are always so pleasantly surprised! Entrees come with a side of rice.
