Back to Maharaja for Christmas Eve this year. Our whole family was together this year and it was fantastic! We ordered both the sampler appetizers (and an extra plate of lamb samosas). And we always try to get a lot of different dishes around the table so everyone can try something different. The food was as usual, delicious! We were in the back room due to our large group and were concerned that service would be impacted, but they were attentive and energetic. The owner came back to check on us as well. The large round tables were comfortable for our group of 8, and we enjoyed our evening. We'll be back next Christmas Eve ( and likely sometime in between)! One thing I noticed that was new (to us) was the open to pay the bill via Toast QR code. We went to Maharaja on a Saturday night. Everyone was very kind and friendly. The space itself is cutely decorated. We enjoyed the complimentary chips and dips and we both enjoyed our entrees. The chicken was very tender and the flavors were delicious. The food did take very long to come out and it also took a while to pay as it looked like one woman was doing most of the table service. Went for the lunch buffet after Christmas, and it was pretty good! Not the best Indian food I've had in Milwaukee, but you just can't beat $15 for access to all of the delicious food. The chicken tikka masala lacked a little flavor, but the rice and other chickens were very good. I wasn't a big fan of the goat curry flavor, meat tasted odd. The waiters are extremely kind and on top of replacing food in the buffet, taking plates, and asking if you need any drinks/desserts. The ambiance is simple but clean and cozy. One if the finest Indian Restaurant i have tried in months. I loved how our server (Sarah) was very considerate, helpful and very smart. I lived the way she introduced herself on the table that she will be making sure everything is taken care of. We went there in a party of 8 after my sister's engagement. Since we went for the lunch, there was buffet or we could order Ala-Carte. We chose the buffet as it so many options - both in vegetarian and meat. Couple drinks were included in the menu. I ordered Mango and Orange Mimosa and few others on the table ordered Taj Mahal Beer. From what i could recall - they had Mysore masala dosa, pakoras, sambar, fish fry, paneer tikka masala, noodles, lamb curry, chicken curry, matar paneer, Manchurian, Pani Puri, salad. - i am still missing 5-6 items. What a FANTASTIC Authentic Indian Food!! After Visiting Temple, I took my family to Maharaja Restaurant as I had heard much about that . Waitress explained the menu Very nicely. We ordered some drinks and we preferred to go for the buffet. I liked crispy Punjabi style pakoras and manchurian. Noodles I didn't like. They could have been made much better. Potatoes and peas vegetable was very delicious. Even I liked Shahi Paneer preparation. Others in my family liked non vegetarian food too like Lamb curry, chicken tikka masala, Fish Fry but being vegetarian I was happy with very yummy garlic naan . All dishes were fresh and it tasted like homemade food. My son loved the Mysore Masala dosa with the sambar. They serve Gol Guppas in the buffet but need improvement. The drinks (certain type) were included in the buffet Dessert like gulab jamun and kheer was perfect and they also served Mango ice cream on demand. I love the food and love the service. I've been coming here for years. But today I showed up solo for the buffet and was automatically charged a total of $51 dollars for a Mother's Day special. There was no difference between the regular buffet, which is normally $25. If this had been disclosed when I was seated, that would have been fine and I would have left. But it wasn't. Are these really the economic times to not disclose a 100% markup due to an occasion not everyone was there for? Not good business practice. I will think twice about going back. read more

Outrageously expensive for a normal buffet. The 3 kids hardly ate a single plate of food. They automatically charged $36 tips because we were a large party. I used to love this restaurant, and went to the buffet very frequently for lunch. I recommended it to others as well. It was my go-to for workday lunches with friends. I understood when they stopped having the buffet the first year of the pandemic. But now, I am not sure why it hasn't come back. In its place there is a limited menu at lunch where you can choose a few items. The itself food was pretty good. BUT They don't allow you to take home your leftovers. So I paid for the food, but they refused to give me anything to take the rest home. So perfectly good food went into the trash. If they had let people know at the start of the meal, or on their website, I could have brought my own container to take the food home. But the weird way this was handled really soured me on this restaurant. Tip: bring your own container. read more

I have been to their lunch buffet several times in the past two years. Their quality has been consistently awesome. Great service too. Recently tried their Mango lamb dish. Even though the food taste less than okay, their customer service was great. Staff was all making sure the customers are taken care of. STAY AWAY! For New Years we ordered butter chicken and it was all dark meat chicken that looked horrible. Almost all Indian restaurants use white meat chicken but not here. It Looked and tasted horrible. When I complained she spent 30 Minutes defending how they made the food. They finally refunded this plate but not the other issue we had with our meal. The owner is too cheap to even refund meals that are horrible. Will never come back here. There are many other Indian places that understand not to argue with customers and make them happy. Wow, it's been 4 years since my last visit and review. I heard that there were changes and improvements, so when a friend invited me to join her here for brunch, I thought it was a good time to see for myself. The first thing I noticed was how bright it was inside. I remember dark lighting and colors on my last visit, so that was already better. The buffet stations were also different. The free standing stations with canopies have been replaced with tables topped with chafing dishes. Maharaja advertises 20 items for the lunch buffet and 40 for the brunch buffet. I didn't count them, but there were three large tables filled with soups, salad, appetizers, entrees, desserts, and chutneys. The food seemed to be at adequate temperatures, but remember that if you put hot food on a cold plate, the food will get cold quickly, so time your visits and portions accordingly. It's tricky to keep plates warm in the winter, but it would help keep the food warm longer, if they can make that happen. Of course, cold foods should still be on cold plates. Highlights for me included the Chicken 65, the Chicken Tikka Rolls, which I've never seen before, the Fish Pakora, the Chicken Tikka Masala, and the Goat Curry. All were very good! The veggie biryani and chicken biryani had great flavors, but weren't spicy at all. I understand that the masses don't like spicy foods. I don't like foods that are too spicy either, but biryani is expected to be spicy, so I think it should have at least a little heat to it. Those who do not like spicy foods can enjoy the other items. I was also hoping for samosa, but they were not in the buffet. The brunch costs $18 and includes unlimited Mimosas, Bloody Mary's, and non-alcoholic beverages. I ordered the Bloody Mary, which was served with a garnish of lime. The flavor was ok. The texture was a bit watered down, but it was included in the price, so I can't complain too much. I think it would be best to charge extra for the Bloody Mary and make it a good one. My friend let me try her Mango Lassi and it was delicious! I would go that route next time, or maybe try the Mimosa. Our service was excellent from beginning to end! The naan arrived hot and fresh within seconds of us returning from the buffet line, and the server checked on us often. The owners also stopped by to check on us. Overall, it was a MUCH improved experience over my last visit 4 years ago. I would like to come back for dinner and order off the menu sometime. Got lunch delivered the other day. For one thing, I got my food close to an hour later than I was promised, which was frustrating in itself. I ordered from EatStreet, which I believe let's restaurants contract their own delivery people, so I might go with UberEats in the future. The food itself (once I warmed it up, because of course it was cold by the time I got it): the lunch menu is a good deal- $9 for 2 mains, rice, and an appetizer. I got Chana Masala, dal, and vegetable pakora. I do appreciate they clearly label what on their menu is gluten free and vegan. Portions were ok, I guess, what you would expect for a lunch menu (think about the size of scoops you get at Panda Express), but nothing to write home about. Everything was ok. Ok, as in, good but not great. Somewhat bland, but not disgusting. Just ok. I also got a masala dosa, which was again, ok. Somewhat bland, and tasted burnt, and the dosa lacked that fermented, slightly sour taste that makes dosas so good. Tldr: A good, if lackluster, option for cheap lunch. I was a bit disappointed, as this isn't going to be the go-to, fantastical delicious Indian place I thought it would be, but it was decent. Maharaja has delicious Indian food. We had lived in the area for years and this was our go-to for several years. They have great weekend buffets with over 10+ options which makes it a great place to try out Indian cuisine if not before. In the last year, I believe they started the bottomless brunch options on weekends which allows you unlimited food and certain unlimited alcoholic drinks (mimosas I believe) and non alcoholic drinks. Because of this they increased their regular buffet prices. It would have been ideal if they had the option for one to chose the bottomless option or get regular one, but they don't. Either way, food is really delicious. I also like their ala-carte menu and we typically get the Chicken Shahi Korma which is a creamy chicken dish (not tomato base) and it comes with rice. I also like their Dosa which comes with various Chutneys (sauces). If you are visiting in a group, it makes sense to order a few things and share, simple because Indian food is so diverse and it's always a good idea to taste as much as you can. The service has been always great and the owners have been exceptionally kind and attentive. They have always stopped by to ask how was everything and attended to any needs if at all. They have their own parking (opposite street) and that makes it so convenient to park in the east side area. I see now that the many "Best of" awards in the entryway are no lie. I was looking for an Indian place that could compare to eating on Devon St. in Chicago. Several years of awards and critical acclaim meant that I had to find out for myself. I brought two friends to scout the place out. Armed with a glass of water and several orders of naan and chicken appetizers to start, I was ready to launch the campaign against my hunger. I found the Sixty Five and chicken pakora to be excellent; served scalding hot. Not quite as spicy as I had expected. Incredibly effective at dulling the sharpened edge of my all-day hunger. The naan were all super fresh, aromatic, well seasoned; the heat distorted the air above them. First, to cement the foothold made by chicken: traditional goat curry, extra spicy, with basmati rice. Another very effective method to destroy hunger. Huge chunks of meat floating in a very fragrant, yet balanced curry; a great way to dispose of several pieces of naan and keema. The meal ended with an order of comforting chicken tikka masala to bring everything to a smooth, satisfying finish. Hunger retreated quickly, it's forces routed by a pincer attack of bread and meat. I find the decor appropriate, but I continue to be somewhat confused by local restaurants and their fixation with barely-on lighting; as if to create this mood of romance and confusion. Sure, it's intimate, but I can't figure out if the naan is tan like bread, or red like blood. The goat curry looked almost black in the dim lighting. Despite being barely able to see, our server was able to deftly maneuver through the restaurant without tripping over chairs or running into walls. Our water never ran dry. It was cold, I was hungry, I was lazy, and I LOVE Indian food - add this all up and you get takeout from Maharaja. I went in and sat at the bar and was greeted quickly. I said I'd like to order takeout and have a drink while I waited. I started with a glass of the Pinot Grigio (Principato). It was a good pour, but unfortunately it was well above room temperature. That's fine that they didn't have one chilled I just wish she would have said something so I could choose a different, chilled white instead. Oh well - I drank it! I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala spicy and the Chicken Makhani medium. I added on some garlic naan as well. While I was waiting they brought me out the complimentary papad - this was very light and airy, plus the green chutney had the perfect amount of fresh herbs and spice. I enjoyed this while I waited. It was only about 20 minutes before my food came up. $50 with tip for one glass of wine, two entrees and naan. When I got home the food was still nice and hot. Plus I noticed that all their containers are eco conscious which I loved. They seemed like small portions but like others have said, you fill up fast. I was disappointed there was only one naan that was cut in half for four dollars, I would have liked a whole one to myself. The sauce for the makhani was seriously fabulous - I loved it. I found it a little on the sweet side so I just added a little salt and it was perfect. I didn't try the tikka masala, but let's just say there wasn't any leftover. The main reason I knocked off a star was that there were a ton of "undesirable" chicken pieces in my meal. There were lumps of cartilage and even a couple bones. I just hate the feeling of biting into something gross, having to fish it out of your mouth and stare at it on your plate. Besides the undesirables - this was a fantastic meal. I ordered in via Uber Eats in town. I knew nothing about the restaurant but the reviews on Uber were decent. I love Indian food, so I am always excited to try new places. I ordered a variety because I wanted enough to heat up for lunch tomorrow. I got garlic Naan (fantastic), Samosas (typical and reliable, nothing special), Malai Kofta (brand new to me, very rich and I couldn't eat much but good). I also got some Murgh Tikka (so good) in case I didn't like the malai kofta. The servings are very generous and I have enough left overs to last for 3 more meals if I want.
