This was my first time trying Peshawar, and it was amazing! I got take out for my husband and I (totally forgot to take photos) and everything was delicious. The staff were very friendly and the restaurant was decorated nicely for Ramadan! We got the chicken biryani and butter chicken (two of our favorites when ordering Indian food). A recent visit to Peshawar provided BF, my mom and I with an excellent dinner. It was a little before the regular dinner hour so we shared the restaurant space with just one large family table and one other table. That suited us as we were low on time and on our way to an event. Service was efficient and polite - a one man crew up front had everything easily under control. The atmosphere is spare and pretty basic, but that doesn't take away from the food experience. My mom's beef dish came out sizzling and spicy. She enjoyed it and the generous portions means she brought a lot home for an additional meal. BF had chicken tikka, which he also enjoyed. He's usually a lamb guy, but he finished his dish happily. I enjoyed my paneer - it had a good heat level and abundant fresh , whole spices and fresh ginger spears. It was not the more common creamy, mushy spinach, but a fresher version that I presume was more typically Pakistani. I had plenty for two meals. Our breads were good. My cheese bread tasted like cheese pizza and couldn't be terribly authentic, but hey - cheese and bread can't be wrong. Mom enjoyed a plain lassi. I did order a side of rice and was happy to have it with my dish, and while it was a generous portion, the price seemed a little high for a side. I would certainly eat at Peshawar again. Second time around and it did not disappoint. So delicious. Service was good and fast. The touch of ginger and jalapeños in the chicken gives the meat the perfect flavor. I have never in my life been this sick from eating food. I came this this "restaurant" Sunday, just trying something new. Ordered the butter chicken, rice and garlic naan. Now this is my go to as a basic American while ordering Indian food, but the first thing I noticed is how bland everything was. Not a hint of spice and very little seasoning. I can deal with that, live and learn, but about two or so hours later I noticed my stomach starting to hurt. Nothing I'm not used to but I was a little worried. Few more hours go by and fluids rush from every hole in my body. It's been two days and I'm still incredibly sick, all for some bland butter chicken... Avoid like the plague. read more

TLDR; Your not missing much, not necessarily worth the time stopping in at this location I was here a year ago, and since then the dining room appears to be updated and the menu as well. Prices are up 30-50% on most items, but there's been a decline in quality from what I remember. Kind of disappointed. We were welcomed to sit anywhere as it was not busy. The waiter set bottles of water down when we got menus. I thought this odd but assumed maybe the kitchen water was funky. Only after I open the bottle I noticed the menu price on back was a dollar, and a quick look at Yelp showed others were charged unexpectedly. I thought maybe things had changed, only to find out when we get the bill that the water was not free. This is shady business practice. If I'm going to be charged for something I didn't ask for then i need to be given the choice to accept or pick something else. Service was fine, place is clean, little bit of a wait on food is to be expected. After ordering we were given a "salad" of raw beet and raw carrot slices with a lemon wedge. It wasn't bad, just different. The Samosas were small, didn't have much filling or seasoning, and didn't look like the traditional pyramidal pouches of potato and veg that I'm used to. These were more like the thin flat ones that can be purchased at the market. They were hot and crispy, just not a lot of filling or flavor. Food was just the meat. Luckily we ordered butter naan on the side. I had the more expensive Bihari kebab - "sliced pieces of tender meat" - and was told it's soft. I expected really tender, as would be expected from a more expensive meat. It was more like pate vs sliced beef. Not my favorite texture. The naan was crispy and not soft. Again it wasn't my favorite texture but it was at least nice to have something to eat with the kebab meat. The Bihari was unexpectedly spicy and also dry. If it wasn't for the cilantro sauce and yogurt dressing it would have been more difficult to eat. I've been to other Pakistani restaurants, I have high praise for them. I love Indian and Pakistani cuisines. This place just falls short. I took an extra star off because of the water issue. Seriously, the fee needs to be disclosed beforehand. read more

This was my first exposure to Pakistani cuisine, and I am now sold forever. I came for dinner on a Thursday evening with a group of 5 colleagues, including someone from Pakistan. They seated us right away and provided menus. The friendly server answered all of our questions and helped explain the menu. I ordered the chapli kabob which was delicious and came to the table still sizzling from the kitchen. I also tried someone's BBQ mixed platter which was moist and flavorful. I tried a lot of the other dishes at the table as well and enjoyed everything. The dining room is small but comfortable and the service is excellent. Our server was beyond helpful and accommodating. I called yesterday to place a big order and made it clear to the guy that I needed two of the butter chickens to be non-spicy. He replied, "So, two spicy and two non-spicy?" and I confirmed that was right. But when the order arrived, two of the butter chickens were marked as spicy, and the other two had no labels at all. I had some friends from Pakistan rave about Peshawar. When I arrived it seemed like it was in a sort of transition. There were boxes stacked around. No one was greeting people and it took awhile to be noticed. Still, I came for the food. And, even though I ate there a month ago, I cannot recall the food. It wasn't bad nor was it memorable. Came by for lunch. Ambiance was casual, service was pleasant and the food ranged from great to excellent. Genuinely surprised to find one of the best Indo-Pak restaurants in Milwaukee versus NYC, Chicago, Boston or Atlanta. I got tired of looking at this place and not seeing any pictures so I thought that they needed a Steve stop by. This place has been a few different restaurants over the years and the last place was oddly a Mediterranean style restaurant. The menu has a lot of great options and I was torn between something curry or a Kabab but the Seekh Kabab won. My food was ready in 20 minutes and I was on my way with take out, C19 habit and the place was empty and I don't like eating in empty restaurants. when I opened up my food I was completely surprised that it was just 3 Kababs and a pathetic looking small salad Which was mostly lettuce. I believe that this is my first Kabab entree that didn't come with some sort of rice like every other Kabab order I have received in the past. The Seekh Kababs were on a bed of onions and green peppers and looked good. The Kababs were cooked perfect and not dry at all and tasty with spicy green sauce on them. I'm disappointed that for $14 all you get in the Seekh Kabab entree is Kababs and a pathetic cheap small salad. read more

I went to Peshawar Indian Restaurant. As I seated, they gave me a salad with green and yogurt chutney . I ordered the chicken samosa. It was delicious with an outer crunch, soft and savory inside. The samosas were really well cooked. A bit of oil stained to the hand but delicious nonetheless. The samosas went really well with the green chutney. The cilantro flavor suited the samosas really well. the yogurt chutney did not hit the spot. I also ordered the Peshawar combo platter, biryani rice only, and the naan garlic bread. Given that the samosa did not disappoint me, I have high expectations of what to come next. The biryani was fluffy and smooth. You could smell and taste the cinnamon. The meat platter was fall off the bone quality. Really soft. The garlic naan was texturous and garlic bread quality. The food was delicious. The naan goes really well with the yogurt chutney. Making a sandwich with the naan was fantastic. The meat was good. There was a small kick from the spiciness of the meat. The kebabs was dry but savory at the same time. For desert, I had rice pudding. The sweet was more of a cinnamon and creamy sweet. There was a hint of ground ginger in the pudding. The taste of the pudding really linger in the mouth. The only bad part for the pudding was the appearance and texture. It's not a good look. The flavor was fantastic. The texture need improvement, maybe a crunch factor. The appearance need to be enhanced. Overall, my favorite will have to be the chicken samosas and biryanis. read more

There were some weird service issues. Not terrible, just weird. They forgot to order my roti and it came out after we were done eating. I asked for no cilantro on my Peshawar kabob and they came out covered in cilantro. They fixed both issues so no harm but they tore hard. The food was fantastic. So excited to have this place few minutes away from my house! I've tried multiple dishes from them - mutton biryani, Peshawar karhai, chicken karhai and charga. They were all amazing except chicken karhai. It was okay. I wouldn't get it again. Their naans though are phenomenal. Absolutely delicious, soft and warm!! Really hope they do well and continue to keep up their quality. They are definitely on the expensive side. I hope I get to try out more items from their menu! From their desserts - the falooda is real yummy. It was really nice to have some good desi dessert! The mango lassi was aight, I wouldn't get it again. Will keep updating more as I try more of their food. Ambiance: They renovated the place fairly good. Liked the lighting and set up. They should be putting in more efforts in maintenance. The windows, doors and chairs had finger smudges. Nothing dirty but not clean either. If you're going for a nice elegant sit down environment then do it all the way. Quick review: bad food, bad service. Cute place and clean at least. Longer review: I used to love this place. Truly I am sad that it's fallen so badly, and I'll probably never go back. I was surprised when I walked in that I didn't smell any spices, but the dining room was lovely and new, so I figured that might have been the issue. New paint can cover the smell of a lot of cooking. Our order was handled by three different men, who argued over the tablet for taking orders, but hey, a new point of sale system is always a challenge so I let it slide. The food was not good. The beef samosas were bland, greasy, unsalted and not tasty. Our mains came out- well, one of them (in the multiple people taking our order mine was left off and I got it later). The beef kabob was inedible. The meat's texture was like it had been cooked, cooled, and recooked multiple times. It was bland, greasy, stringy and despite being really hungry we just couldn't finish it. I got the butter chicken. The chicken was over cooked, the sauce broken and grainy and the worst part- zero smell, zero flavor. Despite being hungry I couldn't eat it. I've had better in frozen dinners and out of a jar. The naan was also bad, which I didn't know was possible. The frozen naan at DesiMart on Oklahoma ave is all better. I took it home and my wife, who was also a huge fan of Peshawar in the past, took two bites and couldn't finish it despite being hungry and was shocked at how bland it was- you literally could not taste anything. Three hungry people, a moderately expensive meal, and we all went hungry because the food was just bad. If I was looking for food to keep me on a low calorie diet this would be it, because I just could not force it down. I felt like I would have been better off getting fast food. It's a shame because Peshawar used to be fantastic and I'd talked up how excellent it was before we got there, and my companion is a chef. Met my Dad here for lunch to try something new. We didn't really know what to order so our waiter was able to guiding us thru the menu to choose something we'd like according to our taste. This was so helpful!! I hade chicken karahi and my dad had the mix platter. Everything was delicious! Portions were huge. The restaurant was very clean and the wait staff was on top of everything!! This is an absolutely fabulous Indian/Pakistani place, and it's unreal it has a ~3.5 star rating here on Yelp. It turns out the negative reviews are a) complaining about pricing, b) complaining about something being removed from the menu (Yelp - that ridiculous review should be removed!), c) whining about lack of face diapers. (Guy goes out to eat then sits in his car - if you're that afraid of life, it's best to stay home.) I have been eating Indian and Pakistani cuisine here in Milwaukee as well as in San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and London for nearly 20 years. You will not beat Peshawar's food *anywhere.* It's absolutely perfect - everything. They even have stuff for the kids, and they don't skimp on it - their french fries are fresh and superb! No, it's not exactly cheap. That's why we go only once a month. Make it a special occasion - you will not regret it. It has its quirks but is still very good. My "go to" is the mixed grill platter. The fact that everything is grilled fresh does make the wait worthwhile. The one thing that should be noted is that rice is not part of any of the platters. It must be ordered separately. They don't skimp on the quantity, but it would be nice to get a meal size portion with the platters. I do recommend Peshawar. read more

I walked in and sat down with my girlfriend. Two bottles (not glasses or cups) of water were placed in front of us and we were given menus. This is when we noticed a small child watching the TV in the dining area. It was blaring quite possibly the most annoying children's programming ever (surprisingly not Barney or Caillou). I understand a family business may not want to pay for childcare, but I don't want to witness it over dinner. Quite a bit later, too long in fact in light of the horrible TV show, we were asked if we'd decided what we would like to eat. We asked for a vegetable pakora appetizer. It actually came out fairly quickly. And it was very good. We asked for a mango lassi, which was good. A bit thick, but good. We were also later asked what we'd like for dinner. We asked for channa masala and a sampler platter, neither with cilantro. The channa masala came with cilantro all over it. We picked it off ourselves. The sampler platter came covered with cilantro as well. We sent it back and they clearly just scraped it off the top before returning it to us. Now, I can handle spicy food. Especially Indian and Asian. But my girlfriend cannot. At least not from these regions (she can handle devilishly spicy Mexican, though). The menu did not address spice levels of these dishes, so one would expect them to be not too hot. WRONG! Both dishes were way too hot for my girlfriend to comfortably handle, to the point she was miserable. I could handle both dishes well enough, but I was not aware I was ordering spicy dishes. It was unpleasant for me because simply because it was not what the menu said. It was downright painful for my girlfriend. We finished the best we could and waited a really long time for the bill. Only to find we were charged $1 each for the water bottles placed in front of us. Incredibly shady. I can afford it no problem, but to "give" them to us without mentioning their cost is downright deceitful. Overall, this was a very poor dining experience. I will never go back, nor do I recommend anyone even try their luck with the service or food. Go to Taj Mahal in Hales Corners (Hwy 100 & Edgerton) instead. read more

Excited to try this place. They had ample parking. As we walked in we were a bit disappointed at the mask situation, but persevered nonetheless. Inside was about six tables set up for service with one group eating and a couple of employees working. We grabbed the menu, which offers a good selection of delicious sounding grilled meats and curries with beef, chicken, mutton and vegetable. Ordering for take home to the family of four we looked for something that would give us a good representation of the food for future reference. Selected the "Mixed Platter" with Reshmi Kabob, Seekh Kabob, Chicken Tikka and Chickin Boti all grilled and served with sauces. We also ordered vegetable and beef samosa and vegetable pakora. Told it would take 25 to 30 minutes to prepare, we said we'll wait in the car and the dude told us he'd bring the order out. Well, thirty-five minutes later, I go inside and they go to check on the order. Guy comes back several minutes later. He's nice enough says he added a salad for me, maybe for the extra time - don't know, whatever I take the bag and head home. That's a ten minute drive. Gather the family, start talking up the delicious lunch that will be forthcoming. Unloading the to-go bag I pop a pakora and it's cold, like out of the refrigerator cold, not at all fresh and kinda soggy - I'm thinking WTF. Keep going and set out the samosas and pull out the mixed grill container, but I can see through the clear plastic top it's not a mixed grill 'cause it's all the same thing. Okay, move forward. The flavor of the pakora was what you would expect, but again - cold. There were three of each samosas which were smallish and turned out to be chicken not vegetable and beef. The outside was the pastry style with a crispness and they were warm. The beef samosa didn't have a great deal of flavor that you might expect, but the chicken was good. The grill dish was was five pieces of boneless chicken. After referring to the menu, it might have been the Chicken Frontier described as boneless chicken strips with fresh onion, bell pepper and mixed with special spices. It was flavorful, spicy-hot, but obviously not what we ordered. Tossed the salad which was iceberg, two cuc and two carrot slices and a lemon wedge. Not sure if this was a fuck up or intentional, but it wasn't close to right - felt like we got what they had available, not what we ordered. From an economic standpoint I paid $34.41, but lost $6 on the grill switcheroo, and then gained $.50 on the vegetable samosa change. The salad aint on the menu and is valued at $0. Over all lost $5.50 on the transaction and didn't get what I ordered. Bottom line I'm not going back, cannot recommend this place to you, unless your willing to take a shot on the roulette wheel of outcomes. read more

As one might expect from a restaurant named Peshawar, this is more Pakistani than Indian. Northern Pakistan. The food is good, the curry is more rub and marinade than gravy, and mild by South Asian standards. Avoid the Anglicized Pan - Indian desi dishes and stick to Khyber-Pakistani cuisine (lamb with spinach, dum pukht, namak mandi karahi, chapli kabab, kabuli pulao, mantu) to be most satisfied. They like their meat tenderized, so you might be surprised by the textures if you're not prepared for it. Like a lot of South Asian places, don't be surprised if their children are around, Across the subcontinent we think family belongs together whether at work or on the move. It's a compliment, they think of their customers as part of the local community and neighborhood. It is a little pricey, but some of the authentic ingredients are limited and expensive due to supply chain logistical problems. read more

I live a short distance from this restaurant, and the location has changed over 3 or 4 times in five years. I'm very excited that Peshawar moved in, and hope they can make it work here. I am not extremely familiar with Pakistani food, but the meals we have had (all carry out so far during COVID-19) have been excellent. We've had vegetarian dishes like malai kofta, kebabs, an interesting meat and lentil stew, and on a recent order we ordered a kebab "roll," which was more like a wrap. Everything has been excellent - spicy, delicious, fresh and interesting. They also have good phone customer service, their own delivery drivers, and you can order through phone or by texting them on WhatsApp, a nice option. read more

Greeted with a friendly smile Peshawar started out on a good note and continued to get better from there. From the nice relish plate of fresh veggies to the veggie samosa the meal started out great. The steaming hot veggie samosa with the cilantro and yogurt dipping sauces was a great appetizer. Then the butter chicken with "yellow" rice and chicken karahi with jasmine rice and beautiful tegrant and tasty garlic naan. The host was kind enough to dial in our desired "spice/heat" level, being first timers @ Peshawar and to our surprise he did an admirable job. We both could use a little more "heat" but as our host said, we didn't want to make it too hot and you wouldn't come back. The mango Lassi was also extremely refreshing! We ordered the mixed grill, and while the flavors were good, the textures were very off. The kebabs were more like paste/liver, and two out of the three chicken styles were completely over-marinated and mush. One of them, we weren't sure if it was fish or chicken until we took it apart. The green chutney was good. Pakora was mediocre, samosas small and unremarkable. The butter naan was soft and pillowy, but tasteless. So, like I said, eh. read more
