In the summer, I'm here for late-night meals, and in the winter, I become an Uber Eats regular. They're probably used to seeing my order come through with the note "no green onions please" every single time My forever favorites here are the yukhoe (beef tartare) and the shishamo. Both are non-negotiable and always hit. We still like to switch it up sometimes, and this visit we tried a few different dishes: * Kataifi-Wrapped prawn tempura: crunchy, and the wasabi mayo was my favorite part. * Nagasaki Champon with ramen: cozy and comforting. * Grilled Squid with butter: simple and done right * Beef Brisket Yaki Soba: savory and satisfying, with bonito flakes doing their little dance on top. * Karaage: coming from someone who doesn't love greasy food, this one was not greasy at all and still juicy inside. Lowkey missing their grilled beef intestine though Great highball selection as well. We got the peach highball for the one who likes sweet, and the yuzu highball for the one who likes sour. I went with the Snow beer Sapporo, topped with shaved frozen beer. Such a nice way to keep the beer cold without diluting it. Out of the dishes we ordered, my favourite would be: grill pork belly, taro chips, yaki soba, and the fried shrimp prawn. If you want some chewy squid, then you could order the squid. The sauce tasted good but I could imagine cooking it to its perfection is hard, especially when the izakaya was actually pretty full due to the beer happy hour! * Porting this review over from my 'Anzenchitai Izakaya' review (which I've told Yelp to merge to this business listing) * My gf took me here for my bday back in January and then we returned for valentine's day. Completely nonchalant storefront and signage. No parking (we had to go park at Galleria across the street and walk over). Lived in Richmond Hill for the longest time and never knew about this place LOL. I loved the decor and seating arrangements the minute we walked in. It's not a big izakaya but every table is like its own private booth because they've sectioned off the tables. You get to have your own privacy and it feels cozy which is cool. The highballs are fantastic at this place. They stuck out right away when we sat down and looked at the specials plastering the walls of the booth. My gf got an earl grey highball while I got a yuzu highball (both at Aly's recommendation). They're also $13 each which is pretty solid value I think. The ice blocks were also chipped properly (good bartender). Wasn't clear ice but that's fine. I believe I also saw some VERY good value specials going on for happy hour! We collectively figured that we'd order a bunch of dishes since a lot of izakayas out there basically serve these tiny ass portions (tapas/small plate). Imagine our immense (and pleasurable) surprise when the dishes arrived hot and with nice, generous portions. And to boot, the food was absolutely delicious. The grilled beef tongue was sooo juicy. The butter sauce for the grilled squid was a perfect compliment. The creamy udon had a crazy amount of umami. My gf can't eat spicy at all and Aly said the chef could accommodate! The udon bowl was also pretty deep. Tori nanban was like a half chicken portion which was awesome. We were absolutely STUFFED after dinner (felt like I was gonna explode lmaoooo) and we had some leftovers to take home. I would be remiss if I didn't mention Aly was awesome. Service was very prompt and she was extremely helpful with the menu. I'm not sure if she was the one handling their IG dm's but my gf and I were SUPER late for our 7 pm res time due to unforeseen circumstances and we messaged them to give our res away but they were so kind to let us keep our res! A+ service. I also don't usually say prices are fantastic in this economy but for how many mediocre izakayas there are these days, this one really rises to the top in terms of pricing as well. Delicious food w/ generous portions, nice strong highballs, prompt service (thank you Aly) and great prices. I've thought about gatekeeping this place as I feel like not many ppl know about it at all due to its location (especially when I talk to friends) but it's probably my fave izakaya now. The employees are quite nice but expect to stay seated for hours if you don't have the courage to ask for something or the bill. we were seated for an additional 30 minutes after our table was cleared because we didn't ask for the bill and so no one showed up. also, make reservations otherwise you won't get seated especially during the dinner rush the place is semi spacious. read more

This IZAKAYA joint was great! The atmosphere was really cool and reminded me of IZAKAYA places in Japan. The staff were awesome, they recommended some dishes and what type of noodles would work best, but most importantly they warned us of the spicy levels for spicy beef tendon. The izakaya vibe was evident when you stepped into the restaurant. We had a booth tucked away in the corner so it was a private space. We lucked out and got $5 happy hour beers, loads of spicy and sweet dishes and sat there for several hours catching up. I highly recommend the fried shrimp and nabe! We had an amazing time at Anji Izakaya. It surely does give me the vibe of Japan. We ordered some of the popular dishes like spicy beef tendon, brisket fried noodle, Nagasaki champong, chicken donburi and beef tartar. All of them were done super well, flavorful and delicious and easily shareable. My fav dish has to be the spicy beef tendon and it comes with a bowl of rice to mix in and pickled veg to enjoy on side. I'm so glad the server recommended us to decrease the spice level on it because he says he likes spicy and he found the tendon to be too spicy at regular level. So I'm glad we opted for less. I like that the champong dish I can choose to between udon or ramyun and fried noodle I can do udon or soba. For the champong, we actually had the original in Nagasaki. I wouldn't say it's the same taste but certainly delicious. 5-stars all around though the only catch is the wait. We came around 8pm on Saturday and had to wait 30-45mins for a seat! So this time, I decided it was time to actually give this place a try. The place had little individual booths which made it much more relaxing to chat and eat. I personally am not a fan of cramped spaces where I have to sit and eye what the next table is eating or listen to their conversations so this place was perfect. I had a gin tonic, while my friends had a suntory highball and beer. We didn't expect the food to have such a big portion! Living in Japan I've kind of expected smaller portions for cheaper prices, and then growing up in Toronto, I've learned that though small portions remain the same, the prices can jump up to catch you off-guard. This place had really good portions that were fair for what they charged. I think the egg omelette was good, the pork they used inside was a bit on the fatty side but mixed with the bean sprouts, was quite good. The only thing was it lacked a little flavour, which wasn't a huge deal because the other dishes made up for it. I don't eat intestines so I had the vegetables and glass noodles. The dish itself was nice and flavourful and from what I could tell they don't skimp on the ingredients. There were definitely a lot of intestines in the dish and my friends were very happy. The chicken and cheese we actually ended up ordering two because it was just so good! The cheese pull was unreal, I pulled so high that I hit my hand on the lamp above us at the table. It was definitely the most flavoured dish of the three and the chicken was so tender. They also gave us a side of peppered radish. I have to say that these definitely had a kick to them but they were quite good that we asked for more three times. We picked this Tapa because we've never had Yuzu flavour before...but I'm sad to report that I did not taste the Yuzu flavour at all We also got French fries (random but I was craving it) and Nagasaki Jjampong Udon Noodle with Seafood which was delicious! Anzenchitai or Safety Zone is the name of a crazily popular Japanese Band back in the day. A band more from my parent's time, but I'm old enough to remember the name (exposing my age a little bit I guess). From a North York (or Toronto) context, it's a longstanding Korean operated Japanese style izakaya. The place is ironically named Safety Zone since you can't really see what's going on from the outside. Is it really safe? Or is it one of those places where you are swimming amongst the Korean mafia and never to be heard from again? Kidding aside, the inside really has a nice vibe. Despite arriving at 12am on a Monday (they do close at 2am), the place feels really lively. Kpop is blaring. You can also hear the sizzling pans from the kitchen and the loud chattering of other patrons. A small sake and grilled octopus in butter are what was on the card tonight (or shall we say this morning). I'm not a huge fan of the sake since it really didn't go down that smoothly, but it was $6, no complaints. Pickled cabbage and radish came with drink. As for the grilled octopus, for $19, you get three legs (tentacles). The waitress brought tongs and scissors (although the scissors didn't feel nearly sharp enough) upon the dish arriving at the table. The octopus had some char on it, but I think it's lacking a bit of that necessary smokey taste. I do think that it would help if they squeezed a bit more lemon on the octopus. I tried to eat it on its own and it just doesn't have the fresh seafood taste. Definitely the frozen variety. But the drizzle of sauce on the plate as well as the butter sauce complimented the octopus well. It's a sweet and sour, creamy kind of sauce. I wouldn't say the food is excellent here, but it's a decent place to hang out with friends late at night (assuming you are young enough to still have friends who will hang out with you at this time of the day/night). Tried this place for the first time while looking for a late night spot on a Monday night. We arrived at 12am and the service and vibes were great! Food was excellent. Definitely recommend all of their raw/cold dishes. I loved the beef tartar and tataki. The cheesy chicken was also very good, but would probably pass on the beef yaki noodles next time as they tasted a little burnt and flavourless. Other than that, i loved everything. Their menu is small, but it is absolutely worth trying. I got a total of 4 dishes and every one was delicious. I'm very happy that I tried this place and will definitely be coming back. It's a little difficult to order since the staff members seem to be fluent in Korean only, but they were patient in taking my order and I was able to order in English with some patience. I definitely recommend this place instead of the more popular Izakaya's in the area. I got 20% off when paying cash, but I'm not sure if that's only a COVID discount. It's 1:30 AM and you've just been drinking for 4 hours at a wedding reception and you're looking for something to eat in Markham = How I came to discover Anzenchitai Izakaya Service: They are open until 3 AM in the morning every day which is very Vegas/hometown like which I love. The Japanese servers were assigned to us were both very friendly and gave us a heads up for last call on the food. The kitchen got our dishes to us quickly and we were very appreciative of that Food: We were glad to have some high quality dishes so late into the evening. The beef brisket Yaki Udon was on point as both the noodles and beef were very tasty. The Rice Cake Skewers get you 4 very big skewers. The Fried Squid legs was fried well with the right amount of oil. The deep fried chicken thigh with cabbage and tangy sauce came with a piled with sliced cabbage which complimented the taste. All dishes came out in portions much bigger than we anticipated which was a pleasant surprise. Ambiance: Japanese pop music was pumping late at night but not too loud where it would disrupt conversation. Decorated with lots of Japanese lamps, wall decorations and the booths and tables were mainly composed of very dark wood. It definitely reminded me of the small Japanese restaurants I came across during my Tokyo visit. What a great yelp find so late in the night in Markham. Anzenchitai Izakaya does looks a little sketchy from outside. I was not even sure it was open when we drove by as all the windows were covered up by heavy shades. Tapas? Izakaya? My friend probably thought our late dinner would cost a fortune as a lot of small plates needed to make him satisfied. Spicy Seafood Noodle ($10) was surprisingly good. The heat came from Gochujang Korean Chili Paste. I love the chewiness of the wheat noodle. What impressed us most was the abundant of seafood which was more than noodle! Fresh PEI mussels, Half Blue Crab, Squids, Shrimps! And at $10? (4 star) Grilled Skewers Chef Choice ($10) was really disappointing. This place was bumpin' for a Tuesday night. The vibe is the perfect drinking setting; dark, loud, and private. Drink prices were dangerously cheap for an uptown bar ($16 for domestic pitchers *insert flying away bill emoji*) and their menu offered a variety of dishes to accompany your (binge) drinks. We ordered 4 menu items: the Pork Belly and Beansprout Dish, Beef Yaki Udon with Vegetables, and a Fried and Grilled versions of Chicken Cartilage (my partner loves the texture and crunch of this part of the chicken). I liked the overall environment of this restaurant and the vibes it gave off - there was great music (mixture of top 40 hits, jpop, kpop lol), a casual atmosphere, and friendly servers. However, the food was either mediocre (beef yaki udon) or just plain awful (seared tuna sashimi). The sashimi in particular was pretty much frozen and didn't really taste like anything... Pretty hidden, dark ambient (standard Izakaya), enjoy the music (mix of pop of English/Korean/Japanese), booth seating, pretty chill, love the vibes here!! Have parking lot in the back behind the restaurant and there's an entrance there too. Ordered the Beef sashimi (recommend), Beef tartar (recommend), large bowl of udon soup (meh but good filler food), spicy cheese chicken, stack of takoyaki (recommend), octopus (meh), wasabi beans (recommend), bowl of fish balls (pls don't get this), chicken wings (also regretted). Definitely recommend coming here with at least 4 people and ordering a bunch of dishes. They're pretty decent sized, or else you won't be able to try a buncha stuff. Come here for decently priced drinks. They have $20 pitchers of Sapporo and BOGO half price house sake ($9.50 + $4.75 for two large warm sake). Not bad! We felt like their food was okay. Out of all of the things we ordered (various fried things, donburi, okomoniyaki, fried noodles, etc..), I would only recommend the Shimesaba (mackerel) and the spicy cheese chicken. Everything else was okay, but those two are the stand-outs. Shimesaba tasted fresh, really interesting flavour, okay-sized portion, it was tangy, especially with the lemon, and really complemented the alcohol and cut through all of the fat of all of the fried things we ordered. Yum! The Spicy Cheese Chicken definitely has a kick to it. It has soo much flavour, we really enjoyed the crunch that the crackers that came with it provided. We loved that the cheese was so stringy--- That cheese pull mmm! Overall, I would only really recommend those two dishes out of all of the ones we tried. I feel like the other izakayas in the area have better food, but the alcohol here is pretty decently priced! BTW: There aren't too many parking spaces behind the restaurant, so some of my friends had to park in the Galleria lot across the street. I like the environment - it is very similar to Hashi. The portions are surprisingly quite large. I was expecting tapa size dishes. We ordered the following dishes: Deep fried chicken cartilage - This dish was good but if you're not a garlic fan, do not get this, It is 50% cloves of garlic and 50% chicken cartilage. Beef brisket yaki udon - This was my least favourite dish - it was nothing special at all. I wouldn't recommend trying this dish. It was a basic stir fry with udon, cabbage and beef. I came here on a Saturday night at around 8PM, with quite a large group of 8 people. We were seated quickly in two private booths beside each other. For a Saturday night and large group I was surprised we didn't have to wait at all for a table, perhaps this is a hidden gem. We ordered the spicy cheese chicken, beef tartare, stir fried udon, spicy udon soup, kimchi stew, frozen tuna sashimi, mackerel sashimi, chicken skewers, fried chicken, fried squid, and beef tataki. I know we basically ordered the whole menu.. and we actually ordered two of the stir fried udon, tuna sashimi, and chicken skewers. Where do I even begin.. I'll start with things I enjoyed. The stir fried udon was really good, it tasted kind of sweet. Almost like chinese stir fried beef rice noodles but sweet. The spicy cheese chicken even though it told like a million years to come out the bread nacho thing that came with it was gooooooood. However it wasn't like the korean sweet and spicy favour it was just spicy. The mackerel sashimi was soooooo good. I usually hate mackerel because of its extremely fishy smell and flavour. However their mackerel was not fishy at all! The chicken skewers, fried chicken and fried squid were all okay nothing special just your average izakaya dishes. Now moving on to things I could not enjoy because they were too damn spicy! LOL I mean I'm not a baby when it comes to spicy food but DAYUM koreans food always seems to be too spicy for me. The soup udon, although may not look spicy it packs a punch, I could barely eat one noodle it was too spicy. The kimchi stew was less spicy than the udon but has a kick. Lastly the tuna, the tuna was not spicy. But I didn't like the fact it was frozen, kinda looked like watermelon... Overall it was really good! Even though we ordered a lot it ended up being 33 dollars per person, which is not tooo too bad however if you're the type to eat a lot and not be full you might not be full by the end of it. I was first attracted by the name if the restaurant. It shares the same name of a music group in Japan, so I went into the restaurant. The interior of the restaurant looks very unique. It's dark and sets the mood for izakaya drinking. The lamps look like the ancient Japanese style lamp, it is wrapped with the Japanese wo paper. The restaurant sells a variety of sake and they put empty bottles all around a corner. I ordered the following food: Beef Brisket Yaki Udon (score 4/5) It tastes good. Though it is the yaki style, i.e. Fried beef brisket udon, there's soya sauce in the base to keep moist the udon noodle and the beef. Overall, the dish is not very dry. In general, I like the dish, just a slightly sweet to my taste. Chicken skewers (score 4/5) The skewers came in a decorative fan-like plate. The presentation is impressive when it arrived. The skewers are delicious and the sauce in the side is a bit spicy, which goes well with the Asahi beer I ordered. Salted grilled mackerel (score 4/5) This restaurant really knows how to marinate and cook their food to accompany the taste with the alcoholic drinks . The saltiness of the fish blends well with the cold beer. Can't stop ordering another can of Asahi Chicken wings (score 4/5) It is like normal deep fried chicken wings you can order from a bar but just without any sauce. A friend brought me here for a late dinner, a spot tucked away in a dark plaza with a bumpy parking at the back. I thought he was taking me to a underground casino of some sort but turns out it was this neat little place with fabulous food! The interior has a really good vibe to it with high ceilings. We ordered the beef sashimi, spicy seafood udon, some dish with chicken and cheese and some dish that was "Japanese style pancake"? In any case, every dish was delicious! 3.5* knocked up to a 4 due to exceptional service. We tried coming here a week ago on a Saturday at 11pm and the place was packed. We waited at the bar with a couple drinks for an hour without a seat, granted they told us they can't guarantee seating unless a table leaves. We wanted to try our luck and stayed but left to eat at another place and decided to try again the next week. Moral of the story: call in advance and ask if they have free seating for your party - which is what we did this week. The food here is good, but not particularly memorable. They give you a big portion compared to other izakaya/tapas places. Skewers are not available on the menu (crossed out). Memorable mentions: spicy chicken cheese; nagasaki noodle soup (huge & broth super tastey); deep fried chicken cartilage; hot sake served in teapot. The service, although only had 2 waitresses working, was outstanding. They refilled our water bottle before it was empty, promptly took away empty dishes and offered to refill the free side dishes - which were really delicious. The pickled radish was perfectly salty + spicy (could be too spicy for those who can't eat spice - I can handle very little and it was ok for me) I would come back for drinks & drinking snacks, not for dinner food. read more

Came here with friends. Was excited to try but ended up disappointed with the quality of the food. The food overall was disappointing and subpar. Do not recommend any of the food tbh. The service is good however but that doesn't make up for the bad food... it's just not tasty, and tastes "cheap", as if any immature coulda made it. read more

Went on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy. The Nagasaki jampong is so good! The portion is huge- can share with up to 3 people (I wouldn't want to though). The skewers and tataki were not as good, but the jampong seriously made up for this. The atmosphere was really good, parking at the back, good for families and friends.
