I just recently had a bad experience (12/28/2024 @6:25PM) with extremely rude and incompetent staff members of AnimeXtreme. The staff members were running around the store checking floor inventory for missing items that they are unable to keep up with. The staff limited customers that were coming into the store. The staff followed me an my party around store noticeably, which upset my girlfriend and when staff asked what was the issue, I let the guy know we were being watched, and we left. I would recommend no one to ever visit this store until they get better staff. read more

Okay, I didn't wanna make this review but here we are. So I read the reviews and I wanted to see for myself and the bad reviews are true. Me and partner went here, we went to look around and as we were looking we herd in the back of us, from one of the staff that there is to many people and some of us should go.!!! What!!!! They have allot of products so it might take awhile to look around so that kinda annoyed us cuz we feel like we are being rushed and the staff kept looking at everyone and not only a second or two for awhile so that made us feel uncomfortable. However, I went up to one of the staff and asked them if they have a certain item and they told me to scan a code and check for myself to see if they have it, in that case I might as well just order online. So not only they're making people feel rushed and uncomfortable, they're also making us do their job. I am giving this store a bad review, however they do have allot of good products in the store, they just need to work on there customer service and willingness to help there customers and make them feel welcome, not making them feel uncomfortable, rushed or checking items on there own. It could've been better. My kids were hype for this shop. Imported stuff from Japan? Not that we'd be able to bring it back home with us... but they wanted to see the stuff. Got there early, thought it was closed (it was) but the cardboard on the door definitely gave off some vibes. We read reviews previously about the limit to how many people were allowed, and holding bags at the register. We circled back right after it opened. They weren't thrilled with a family of 5 coming in, but here we were. I understand why they keep bags/backpacks at the register because the goods are pricey as all heck. The reviews were also right that they make you feel rushed and keep checking on you - whether it's for loss prevention or to get you out of the store, I don't know. One of my kiddos found a Pop figure that he wanted, so we got that and got out of there. There was a line at the door when we left. Extreme rude staff, the owner threatened me because I had a convo with my friend and used swear words, worst experience, worst store ever.

Do not shop here. We showed up after a 30 minute walk to have to be buzzed in. My boyfriend had a closed bottle of water, and was told by the owner he can't come in unless he throws it out. Next thing we know after shopping for 5 minutes he says "are you guys actually going to buy anything?". ALL of the products are overpriced. We were then basically told to leave. This is my second time visiting the store and honestly it was much worse than the first. There are many restrictions when entering the store which is understandable due to COVID. However the staff was not friendly. The whole time we were browsing the staff was basically rushing us to leave quickly before our time was up. They were also hoping around the aisles watching all the customers like we were going to steal something? The prices on the figures were also significantly higher than retail price even if you take shipping into consideration. I would honestly just buy it online if possible. read more

Despite all the reviews being 1 star, the store definitely is much better than anything I have seen in Toronto. During COVID-19 they implemented safety measures allowing people to only stay for 10 minutes. I think their rule of "leave bags at the front" is pretty mandatory as the figures are some times extremely rare and hard to find. Cleary the people who say everything is overpriced have not involved themselves in the hobby. The figures would have been much more expensive if imported from Japan taking into account the aftermarket prices. Customer service was very friendly and helped me find what I was looking for. Horrendous experience! All prices of figures are 3 to 5 times as much as their original prices, and they aren't even rare. Staff and the owner will treat you like you're planning to steal, even though they ask you to leave your bag at their register, so they stalk. Came to browse? Not allowed at all, I actually was kicked out for looking around. It's either you know what to buy or you aren't allowed in, even though they sell millions of figures, and thousands of manga. The customer limit is hardly the problem, but hey, people in line won't wait long as long as people keep getting kicked out. You can't be a collector to start a store selling what you love and be snobby to customers, I don't care if you did have a history of thieves or not: no customer is supposed to be treated this way. Felt really uncomfortable since the owner kept watching us like a hawk. There were other people in the store, but for some reason he kept his eye on us specifically. We put our bags at the front like everyone else but he felt the need to breathe down our necks. We felt badly about how we were treated and went back to respectfully explain how we felt and ask for a return but apparently all sales were final (which we were not told when we purchased the items). The owner got defensive and raised his voice and refused to return the items. I understand being concerned for theft, but maybe dont treat your customers like criminals. I've been popping in and out of AnimeXtreme since I first discovered it a few years back, the only problem is I've never been able to actually buy something here. I've never really noticed the staff being rude it all, if anything the staff is pretty typical of the type of store it is. The store itself is stocked very well and features a ton of manga, an entire back wall of Gundam model kits, a whole lot of plushies, and enough statues and figures to please a collector of any age. The problem I have here is the same problem I've noticed multiple reviews, and that's the prices. The prices here can be anywhere from 30-100% higher then other places (yes, I said 100%, they have items you can purchase for $30 elsewhere going for $80). I understand prices can very, but that kind of difference is a little sketchy to me. Warning: you are not allowed to take photos of any kind here. I threw that in there because they do politely ask you to put you're phone away which has literally stopped me from purchasing from them in the past (I'm sorry, it's just a really stupid rule for an anime store). Overall, the selection is great and other then the completely unnecessary cell phone rule the staff isn't bad either. However, you'll be able to save a whole lot of money shopping elsewhere. as some one who has been in the collecting hobbies for YEARS with well over 400 anime figures/200 gundams and have been coming to this store for 9 plus years ill say this. the store has a pretty great selection of gundams at reasonable prices given most big gundam stores are farther from me and sometimes im in a rush and can wait on shipping so being able to walk in and find what i need for good pricing is great BUT when it comes to anime figures its awful and anyone preaching about it being great is either not a seasoned collector or are just straight up lying. the selection of figures is good no lie in that but some of them are greatly over priced, prize figures that normally go for 25-40 cad ive seen being sold there for 90+ and ive also seen them sell fakes in the past (i have not seen any bootleg as of current but this was an issue in the past so id be careful) not to mention that the owner ease drops and get super defensive on their pricing as i whispered to my friend that she could find it cheaper on amiami to fit her budget and they came over from the aisle over to kick us out! for me the biggest let down is manga and the over all experience, they over price their manga and pretty much charge the usd price on the back before taxes and its a shame given this store probably has the best selection in toronto . now the experience is the worst part, you can NOT look in piece they breath down your neck and follow you for 90% of the time and the moment you pick something up they'll ask to hold it at the front for you they straight up treat you like your gonna steal, none of the staff know about half the products except for 1 amazing gundam guy and 1 girl that that can narrow down your search with anime bless her other then that forget it read more

It will be my last time going to this establishment. I have went here a total of 2 times, both of which were disappointing experiences. The first time I went, i was trying to buy some funko pops for me and my buddies. From the start, I noticed the price were already higher than market value (PPG). As I proceeded to take pictures to ask my friends if any interested him - I was stopped by an employee and was interrogated on what I was doing... already an off-putting experience. I then told her that I was trying to get pictures of the funko pops to see if my friends wanted me to pick any up for him as well. She then went and got me a business card and told me to tell my friend that he should go on the website. The employee then followed me around the store while pretending to maintain inventory. I was so turned off by the whole experience that I took my money to another store. The second time I went, I was immediately told to leave my bag by the front door. Reluctantly, I did anyways as I didn't want to create a scene but after 5 mins of slight browsing... The 2 employees that were on the floor were too busy with the front desk computer or "maintaining the store". I chose to leave the store. Overall, I would NEVER recommend this store to anyone. Before you buy anything here, be sure to do a little research online to see if there are cheaper alternatives, these guys are notorious for selling stuff 2x sometimes 3x the retail price. I suppose they keep doing so because they manage to get some suckers to fall for it. Came here after a long time and had a much better experience than my last. The two employees at the front were nice, especially the girl. Right when you enter you have to leave your bag at the front with is off-putting. I understand it's to prevent theft, but it also makes me worry that someone will steal my belongings since they're just lying at the front of the store. They have a huge collection of manga and figures, though the prices are higher than stores like Amazon. It's a nice place to come and look around, though I don't think the employees like that as there are signs saying "no loitering". Shopped here twice for nendoroids. Collection was good and price is indeed 20-50% higher to those rare ones but common nendoroids are 10-15% higher. One piece P.O.P. Figures are wayyy Overpriced. At first the store from a distance looks amazing for any anime fans out in Toronto! But when I came inside I noticed you have to leave your bag in the front door and personally that kinda is a bit of a turn off from even buying anything in that store because I don't like being imply that I'm gonna go steal anything! Overall I found the place very unwelcoming! Secondly, I find some of the stuff way, way overpriced!!! I'm a sailor moon collector myself and I have every single Sailor Moon funko pop And I purchased all of them ranging anywhere from as low as $11 to the most $15. I saw the same Sailor Mars funko pop for triple the price it was $50!!! You could literally go on Amazon eBay or even EB Games etc. and don't get it for more than half the price that they are offering it! I could totally understand some of the other items because they were either from Japan or they were the limited edition but for the most part they really should considering lowering their price! Personally I don't think I would waste my time coming back here you can get other collectables for half the price they're offering it for I'm surprise this place is still even open! And pretty much the deals and everything and the service I was getting to be far better! First time I went here, the guy at the front desk was extremely rude and off-putting. My friend had came in town to visit and was looking for anime merch and so we decided to stroll Spadina and found this place. Leaving your bag at the front was fine, but the way the man had told us to was rude and said it as if we couldnt read, when in reality we didnt notice the sign. Similar to other peoples experience, my friend wanted to take a picture of a figurine to send back to his gf to see if she wanted one, but instead of a polite reminder about their policy on phones and pictures, the cashier had rudely called him out on it from afar and decided to berate my friend about whether he can read or not. I'm a Chinese girl and very very familiar with Japanese culture, so I don't think the comments which criticize the customer service are fair. My main point is that Asians are extremely shy and it's beyond most native people's imagination, and especially the ones who are fond of anime, they're the most nervous ones. I myself is a kind of girl like that, I treat people very "cold" as well, so I'm properly feel very unfair, too. It's wrong that the shop is in downtown Toronto but the people there are not friendly at all, but there is another explanation about their attitudes. Maybe providing people with the most "familiar" feelings is very important, I mean, if we go to a Chinese restaurant, we can't imagine the waitress there are local beauties, the same is when we eat at fancy restaurant in downtown area, we also expect the waitress there are charming and mostly locals. Finally, what I mean is the people at the store should be the ones who are most familiar with Japanese anime and are crazy about it. Cuz I myself is a crazy fan about it, I can just tell all of them are no doubt crazy fans. In fact, my first shopping experience there is also very strange, too. I bought a very expensive unicorn gundam mobile suit and it's worth more than $150, when I paid at the cashier, the man didn't speak anything except tell me the price. I asked him could I get discount, he answered me very seriously like "sorry, all the mobile suits have no discounts." I told myself not to laugh in the store cuz I was just kidding because I think he's too nervous! It's the first time I've ever saw someone who is even more shy than me! And the moment I left the store I laughed at their seriousness,and maybe just how stupid they are. Something about the bag things. I always go there after classes in u of t and I have my huge school bag with me, everytime I just walked very normally in it and never be asked to leave my personal belongings at the front desk. To tell the truth, I was quite surprised to know that it does has the bag thing rule.(really?) If it's about the comic books and models and lots lots of things there, I just feel "it's the only REAL anime store in Toronto." Cuz I've said I'm a fan of Japanese anime instead of American one, and I've truly investigate every store in downtown area, the conclusion is that it's undoubtedly the only one which appeals to the real Japanese anime store. Well, I give it a 4 star just because it's clear many people are hurt by its cold and ruthless(well that's true if you're quite adapted to downtown cloth store's customer service) attitude, and I myself is shocked at the first time as well:) but I like it, cuz there is no other one like this in Toronto any more. Im rating only based on gundam/hobby supplies as I only ever come here for that. The price for gunpla is reasonable in my opinion if you take into consideration the currency rate of yen to CAD + shipping costs + store profit + taxes, maybe Im wrong on that aspect but It sure beats ordering online for me as I have to use the cheapest shipping method to not overpay for my gunpla fix as well as the wait time (couple weeks to a month) due to paying for cheapest method. I guess its all convenience if you want a gunpla kit asap, then animextreme's large selection of kits got you covered. For hobby supplies, there really isnt much hobby stores within reasonable distance for me so coming here for the occasional flat coat spray or tamiya acrylics is really convenient. I went to AnimeXtreme to price reference some Figuarts, with another shops in the area. I fully intended to buy a figure before entering. I never felt more unwelcome and unwanted in a shop my entire life. When entering you are immediately told you have 5 minutes inside, which is fine I understand there is a line to get in. I told the employee that I was just browsing for the moment ( I had not made up my mind with what figure I wanted to buy). Within a minute of me browsing I was handed a business card and told "Look online before entering, we just need to get people in and out". I was kind of taken back by this, judging by the tone of the employee I felt as if I was being annoying for spending a couple minutes deciding on a $100 purchase... After the employee said that I wanted to leave, I felt as if they didnt want me there. We tried to leave but the door was locked? We were told to wait for other shoppers to finish before they could let us out?? But we were also immediately before rudely told to not be there ( essentially). Anyway, I wont be going back. I legitimately felt bad after my visit here. Anyway, I walked 5 minutes down the street and found the same figure at Meeplemart for 25% less. Note to the staff: If you don't want people inside without immediately knowing what they want to buy, DONT have your shop open. Just have people order online. Or do curbside pickup. You cant lock shoppers in your store until you decide they can leave. I found this store looking for hard to find Dragon Ball figures. The staff are helpful and polite, the prices are reasonable and fair, their selection is much larger than any other place ive been to aside from Cons obviously. Would highly recommend this store to anime lovers. As a collector finding rare items can cost a fortune on auctions so AnimeXtreme has saved me a lot of headaches and helps keep my wallet full. Really rude and stupid. The service totally suck, the Japanese woman staff didn't want to talk to me or seem happy. however, as I walk up to the cashier she suddenly became so warm and welcoming, lmfao. Someone said asians are shy, but I had lived in Japan for 3 years and have never seen any staff being so rude and changing their attitude that quickly. That is so fake and I have never seen another Japanese staff being like that. Things are definitely over priced, the box I took had three broken angles and the cashier didn't check that for me at all. I realized as soon as I walked out of the store and when I went back, they were rude and told me they were not changing it for me bc it's not their responsibility. Don't their conscience hurt at all? It's so fking stupid. They acted like they hate weeaboos but like them bc they are paying the money to that stupid place. Definitely not returning, do not recommend it at all bc of their attitude. If you are not in a rush to get the figure, I'd highly recommend to go to Japanese amazon, special deals are on there all the time and it takes about a month to ship to Canada, prob it's going to be over 1/3 cheaper+no tax. After reading all of the terrible reviews about this place, I was hesitant to go in. The window display seemed faded, and from the outside, the store looked like a shoebox. Upon entering, stairs lead to the basement where the actual store was. What a relief, too! It was well lit, spacious, and seemed to have a great selection. Many have complained about the horrible staff and service. While they were not spectacular or particularly friendly, they weren't extremely rude and unwelcoming either. I saw all of the complaints about leaving your bags at the counter, and when I reached the bottom of the stairs, I saw a sign that stated so. I went up to the man behind the counter and asked if I should leave it and he told me I could keep it on my person, which was a pleasant surprise. Other than that, he didn't seem to acknowledge my existence. Same with the other employees. From what I saw, they seemed to have a great selection of manga and figurines. My brother came in looking for a specific Gundam that we couldn't find in all of NYC, but lo and behold, they had it! It was also reasonably priced! While Anime Xtreme could stand to work on their customer service, I found every other part of the store very nice. We did not have any terrible experiences here, so I would come back. read more

If I'm looking for something specific can't find it at One Million Comix or Silver Snail then I come down to Anime Xtreme as a last stitch effort to find it locally before resorting to online shopping or eBay. They usually have some older toys and figures that other stores have long ago liquidated so it is worth coming here to have a look. The guys that work here usually pay me no mind since I'm neither a geeky guy (no offense geeky guys!) or a 12 year old fangirl - all the better because this way I can worm my way through their tiny aisles and if they don't have what I want I can leave and not have to deal with their condescending attitude. If I do have to ask them for something I'm usually met with a "Why the hell do you want that?" kind of response. My friends have told me to keep my eyes open for items of questionable authenticity here, but I've never had a problem with any of the figures and statues I've bought here. Their newer merchandise tends to be overpriced, but you can find some deals on some of their older stuff. read more

I've read a few complaints from this store, and while I felt uneasy to pay a visit, I did it anyway. Basically they carry a huge amount of manga, figurines, etc. Their manga selection is pretty good. I was looking for a specific volume 1 and they had it! They also sell mugs, and custom printed ones too! If you want one for $10 just ask the cashiers! Like others, I've heard a ton of complaints about the place. So I was a bit wary my first time around, but the staff have been nothing but nice to me. We've even talked about the products on occasion a bit before I left. I mostly go in to buy Manga and Gundam Models so I'll talk about those. -Manga- Their manga selection is very good. Much better than anything you'll find at a local Chapters or Indigo. I think that alone is worth it to make the trip worth it because the books are sold for the exact retail on the book. I've never really noticed a sale with the exception of Black Friday. But I really can't complain about prices. Probably best place in Toronto to just go down and pick up a book. -Gunpla- If you're interested in Gundams/Gunpla they have a huge selection. It's just a ginormous wall in the back. It's huge and well organized by number and series. It could use maybe a bit of signage to tell you where the different series are if it's your first time in because it's so big but past that I've never had a problem with it. You're going to typically be paying two times the price from Japan. This is mostly to cover import fees plus the bonus on top that makes it worth it for them. Like almost any gunpla hobbyist will tell you in NA. You're probably better ordering online somewhere, but to be able to go down and just pick up a model anytime I want makes it more than worth saving a bit and waiting forever. I came to Canada from the U.S. to visit my girlfriend as we were attending the Anime North convention near the airport. AnimeXtreme was one of the vendors in the convention so that is how we heard about them, and coincidentally they had this store located near the hotel where we were staying so we decided to stop by to browse. And never in my life have I been to a hobby store like this where the staff is fixated on you at all times like you're a child ready to cause trouble. My girlfriend and I could not enjoy ourselves in the store looking at things because of the staff walking around pretending to be working but really they're watching you. We couldn't pick anything off of the shelves because they would swoop right in and ask to take it to the counter for us. At one point I heard the guy at the front whispering to the attendant to take the figure that I was planning on buying away because it didn't look like I wanted it. Honestly, this store has a really nice collection of figures. And it is the only reason I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1. I was ready to spend more at this store to take home with me but I didn't feel treated like a quality customer here. I've been to hobby stores in Japan that don't even do this. So if you don't mind this type of treatment then I would recommend it only for the merchandise, because really they need to take a good look at their ethic. read more

I honestly try not to shop here, as everything is clearly over priced. The books are pretty average in prices, but the figures are painful, especially knowing you can pick up some in different places for a normal price (if you know where to look). I enjoy browsing the place and on occasion they have very good clearance items and sales. Their blind boxes are all opened and each figure is priced individually based on rarity/character. I rather pay 8$ for a blind box keychain and take my chances than pay more for the character I really want. What's the fun of that?? Cosplays are cheap looking, better buying them online, and music is normally obnoxiously loud (although a few times it's been off or very quiet, which I appreciated). Wide range of manga to choose from which is really great for any hardcore manga fan. Huge selection with HG, MG and SD gundam models. Not that many PG models sadly, as for paints and markers. Buying the single markers are more expensive but then again, they hardly even carry gundam marker packs. Oh and never preorder stuff with them because they tend to forget about it. Aside from that, if you're a huge fan of Final Fantasy, they carry quite a few action figures. Price can be negotiable for example, I convince the sales guy that a single gundam marker was worth less than what they selling so I got a discount. The employees seem very lazy except for like two of them, who are very enthusiastic and always jump at a chance to help with anything. One of them is a huge Gundam builder so asking him for what Gundam he would recommend is the best. read more

These two stars are for the collections of the Anime and related stuffs. I have been to 3 stores today, this store has the most complete collection of Japanese comic books, and a lot of fascinating toys. However, the service of this store is really bad. There are a lot of rules for the costumers: no bags (which is ok); no photo (which is understandable); no reading the content of the books at all (which is very rare--I cannot decide whether to buy the book or not simply by looking at the title and the face of the book). The sellers just stand still and watch you. When you ask them for help, their attitudes are very cold. This is not Asian style. However, if you'd like to buy Japanese comic books in Toronto, you have to go this place, since the collection is really good. read more

I am about to completely out myself with just how big a nerd I am. Will is correct, they are over priced. They are snobs. They will put you down and look down on you for buying something they don't think is cool (or was cool when you could only find it in Japan or Usenet groups). It's not a pleasant place to shop but they do have a great selection of stuff and give you the ability to rent-to-own movies. If you've rented something several times the cost of your rental is put towards your purchase should you decide to just buy it and save yourself a walk. The shelves are packed with books that are in my opinion, not very good but I don't like manga that's aimed at 12 year old girls, and they have a lot of it because that's what sells in North America. At the same time they have a lot of books made in North America in the style of Japanese manga and those don't work at all. They're like the book equivalent to Asian countries trying to make "Hollywood" movies. The look is there but something is lost in the translation. If you're looking for toys or figures or model kits this place a pretty wide selection to choose from. However, does anyone even like Gundam anymore? There seems to be a little too much of that in stock. To sum up, the place is kind of a last ditch effort to find something if you don't see it at the snail, beguiling or hairy tarantula.
