The man who owns this store was NOT nice to me. He either doesn't like Asian people or is just rude to new people, because he was perfectly kind and affable to people he knew (who were also not Asian). So I was in the neighborhood and wanted to patronize a local store to support local business. I wanted a pet brush for double coat fur dogs and a harness. There was no one else in the store, but when I asked for some help on which of the many options would be appropriate for the dog (which I had with me), he was gruff and couldn't be bothered to give me any guidance or info. I ended up standing in front of the carousel of brushes and googling reviews. Then, after paying for the brush, I asked for his opinion on the size and choice of a harness. Without hesitation he recommended a medium size for my small shiba, and let me try the harness on her. However, before ringing up the purchase, he again was blunt and pre-emptively said, "no returns on this one, okay?" I wasn't planning on returning it, but it surprised me that he would say so and say it in this way. Was I being profiled? I'm not sure. It didn't feel good to be treated this way. I reassured him I don't live nearby and didn't plan on returning it anyway, and we wore the harness out happily. It wasn't two weeks in when my dog started wiggling out of the harness on its tightest setting. Come to find out, she really fits a small (because I got her a size small in the same model, and that fits her perfectly). I think the items I purchased were very basic things for a dog, and the lack of care and customer service on the part of the owner left much to be desired. I will not be back. read more

Visited today and found guy working there to be super helpful and kind. He was on the phone when I came in, but almost immediately HUNG UP (I know, right?!) and asked if I needed anything. So I tested the, "They said they'd stock it for me," testimonial (see D.N.'s review below) and- sure enough! My bunny's recycled Yesterday's News litter and Oxbow Oat Hay are in the works for their next order. Plus, they do FREE scheduled (often same-day) deliveries. LOVE. And though not a huge store compared to one you'd find stranded somewhere in suburbia (eww), it's definitely a BK luxury to be able to move freely in between aisles without getting tangled in a leash or chew toy. Yay, space. BONUS: They have pics of customer's pets (Greenpoint cuties!) taped on the wall inside the door; as I was leaving guy says, "Make sure to bring us a picture of your bunny!!!" Thank god for Animal Planet. The prices are affordable, most of the time beating those at Petland 'Discounts'. The owner and his sons are beyond nice, they really take pride in what they are doing. You can find almost anything you need for all kinds of pets here, and it's super clean and organized. If they don't have what you are looking for, they'll order it! They even have a wall of pets in the neighborhood, inviting people to post pictures of their pets. I recommend this place above all pet stores in the city, it's really a great selection of products! read more

This is why we need to support small businesses. The owners are super attentive, friendly, and knowledgable. They special order items and give discounts on bulk purchases. After reading all the good reviews, I decided to cross the Pulaski bridge with my dog and come over from LIC to see what this store has to offer! Unfortunately, I didn't get the same service as some other people did. I didn't feel that my dog was welcome into the store as the owner told me he had to stay close to me because of the cats. Instead of putting the cats in a different room or area, he told me I shouldn't go into the aisle where the 2 cats were because they would attack my dog. Then I felt bad about just checking the store out without buying anything, so I figured I would get a toy for my dog. I asked some questions to the owner, who didn't answer any of them because he didn't want me to come back to him saying he gave bad advice. All I was asking were questions like, which toy is the strongest between two, or what's the most popular toy he sells, which ones he gets good feedback on, etc. Nothing! He didn't even try to show me other toys, he just said that all toys are the same and they will get destroyed at one point or another. I agree, but please try to help me out! One more things, and this seems to be the same at every small pet store apart from the big Pet Smart or PetCo, everything is so dirty and full of dust! I ended up buying a dog toy, but I washed it at home before giving it to my dog, it was just so dirty! I will stay on my side of the bridge in the future and go to Pet Island where the owners are really trying to help! read more

What a great store to open up just a couple of blocks from my home! They have just about everything that you or your pet (cat, dog, bird etc.,) could want and many other items that you may not think of. Plus they will order in anything that your 4 legged baby may want and deliver it to you for free -- woohoo! The store is very clean and well laid out, the staff are incredibly friendly and obviously animal lovers and their 2 cute kittens are to die for. The pet store around the corner from my apt was totally out of my dog's brand and were not restocking until three days later. After getting nowhere with two other pet stores that were slightly more conveniently located, I took the B43 up to Animal Planet. Super nice owner and their prices beat out even what I could find online. EVO is not cheap food -- Animal Planet cares about providing a healthy selection for your pets. Not sure of their delivery area but they were very nice about coming down to me by McGolrick Park. A+ service. read more

This place offers exactly what I need for my cat. It has a nice selection of nice organic hard and soft food as well as the less expensive varieties. Two sweet cats follow you around as you make your purchases and the two guys, father and son, who own it, are really nice and very helpful. It's purrfect! read more

There are quite a few locally-owned pet stores along Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint, and this one is my favorite. It's run by three guys (presumably a man and his two sons), and they were always so friendly and helpful whenever I went in. More pros: - As another commenter said, they're open until 9PM - They have 2 adorable cats there, Kobe and Cece (Kobe, the orange one, is very inquisitive and affectionate) - They post photos of their customers' pets all over the wall by the door, and have encouraged me to bring one in of my own - They almost always had what I needed in stock, and if they didn't, they'd offer to order it for me This is just a really great place. They stay open til 9:00!!! I work in retail and so most of Manhattan Avenue is closed by the time I walk home, but I can always get to Animal Planet by 8:40. Phew! The prices are reasonable, the family are great people. I love not having to carry heavy bags of litter more than half a block home. Sure I could get my canned catfood a few pennies cheaper at some chain store, but I would rather those pennies go to this store and it is worth it to not have to schlep 40lbs plus cans of food on a bad ankle more than a block. Also, as my cat ages, he needs more specialized stuff than in his youth. Animal Planet has a fantastic selection. read more

This place is legit. I've lived all over Greenpoint for the last five years, been to all the pet stores many times. This one is by far the best. Solid prices, but honestly that isn't even why I go there. The store is run by good guys who like animals. Friendly vibe. My Stella always pulls towards there when we walk. A couple times a week I allow her to pull me in. They give her a treat, I buy a bone, she carries it home proudly. Animal Planet has become a place we both really like to go. What can I say that hasn't already been said? This place is a gem. I'm in almost every day since I live next door, and my dog is obsessed. They never care that I usually come in just to do a lap with my dog on our daily walks. When I do need something, the prices are the best in the neighborhood. This is a great pet supply store. They have a full inventory of a wide variety of food and litter, etc. including excellent healthy brands of food like Wellness, Weruva and Kats in the kitchen, and eco friendly litter. The man who owns this store is very friendly and helpful, a person who creates a neighborhood feel and means it. Two silly store cats and a few squeaky birds greet you when you cross the threshold. Hubby and I have a menagerie at home, at one point 3 cats and a demon in the shape of a dachshund, we're now down to 2 cats and the demon. We were so excited when Animal Planet opened two blocks from our place, now we wouldn't have to wait and get deliveries from NYCpets in Williamsburg. What we didn't know was just how friendly and caring the owner and his sons are. Anything you need that they don't have they will order it for you. Recently another customer had mentioned holistic frozen pet food and the next week the brand was available in the store. I love that they also deliver so I don't have to try to juggle 2 bags of pet food, 25lbs of cat litter and the demon on a leash. The demon loves Animal Planet because he always gets lots of treats from the owners. Animal Planet is the type of establishment that has disappeared, great product selection, friendly caring owner and a very pleasant environment. I wish more businesses were like this. read more
