Dr. Andrew Gore is fully deserving of my 5 stars. He is unbelievably patient, thorough, and kind. I have been his patient since 2015. During an eye exam today he grew concern that I exhibited symptoms suggesting a possible retinal detachment. He took it upon himself to: (1) Call my primary care physician to recommend that she authorize a same-day appointment with an ophthalmologist due to the urgent medical situation; (2) Call my HMO Member Services, and then later, Provider Services, to advocate on my behalf for the medical services I needed when my PCP would not authorize it (because she hadn't directly examined my eyes); (3) Call a retinal specialist who he personally knew and respected, whose office was near my home, and arranged for me to be seen on an emergency basis. He sent his notes over and got me a same-day appointment. Those calls took about 45 minutes; he was put on hold a few times and given the runaround. Yet not once did his patient and gentle manner change. He doesn't know it, but I decided today that I need to emulate his patience. That's not where this story ends. On my way to the ophthalmologist's office, I get a call from my PCP telling me that they managed to authorize a same-day appointment with a retinal specialist who was in network. Great, I say. I call the first office to let them know. I arrive at the retinal specialist office and am told that he won't be available until the next morning. They tell me to go the ER. Suddenly I get a call from Dr. Gore's office. His assistant tells me they're aware that I had cancelled the ophthalmologist appointment because I had found an in-network provider. What is their contact info so Dr. Gore can send over his notes? I relay the whole kerfuffle and tell them I'm headed to the ER. A few minutes later, I get a text message from Dr. Gore's office with the contact info for three specialists in the area. (Mind blown.) I am so thoroughly impressed at how Dr. Gore went above and beyond. The kindness he showed me can only be matched by his competence and professionalism. He listens carefully and takes his time. He takes pride in his work, and yet he leads with a palpable humility. I wish doctors like him were more the rule rather than the exception. He really does stand far above the rest. His office is well equipped, and his staff helpful and knowledgeable. The way he treats his office staff is the way he treats his patients -- with respect, consideration, and kindness. When I saw all 5 star reviews, I was skeptical. But after meeting Dr Gore and now seeing him for 2 years, I am so happy I found him through Yelp. Make sure you call ahead of time as he's normally booked up for weeks. Be prepared to wait at least two weeks before an opening date as he is popular. They validate parking, so just park in the bank parking structure in the building. I have been wearing glasses since I was 10 and he is of the nicest docs I've encountered in LA. He is really patient and does a thorough job with the eye exam. He takes his time and you never feel rushed in his office. Dr. Gore is extremely patient, kind, knowledgeable, and efficient. I highly recommend him. He is very thorough in his eye assessments. I have a congenital eye condition and he deserves my highest recommendation. I have always been impressed with his diligence to keeping a clean exam room. I have noticed this prior to the pandemic and appreciate that he wipes machines down before and after patient use, reminds patients to wash hands before contact fittings, wishes his hands frequently, and a clear and professional sign noting patients will be asked to reschedule if arriving to appointments with cold or flu symptoms. I've been to at least a half dozen diff optometrists and he is, by far, one of the most thorough screenings I've had and he also offers that photograph thing of the back of your eye for another 25$... cool stuff! My husband and I both needed new prescriptions and made appointments with Dr. Gore, referred by The Society of the Spectacle Eye Glasses shop (an absolute gem of a store). I have never had any issues with my eyes except needing occupational glasses after I turned 40 a few years ago. Dr. Gore was so thorough and spent an entire hour on my eye exam. My mother has macular degeneration so I appreciate this very much. After taking retinal images, he discussed that I had "narrow angles" and showed me the images while explaining what this meant. He told me my eyes looked very healthy except for this particular issue which caused him some concern. He urged me to see an ophthalmologist at my earliest convenience for further examination. That was one week ago. Today, I had my appointment with Dr. Morgan and Dr. Song at the USC Roski Eye Institute who both confirmed that yes, I do indeed have narrow angles which puts me at risk for glaucoma. They were both extremely impressed that Dr. Gore had discovered this during a routine eye exam... Thanks to Dr. Gore, I was made aware of a potentially dangerous situation concerning my eye health and was able to get the laser procedure (iridotomy) done today as a preventive measure in avoiding major eye problems down the road. Without Dr. Gore's exam, who knows how long I would have gone before finding out I had narrow angles! Dr. Gore gets all the stars! read more

As a Doctor myself, it always is amazing how great or poor your experience can be in another Doctor office. Dr. Gore's office is easy to find, clean, inviting and straight forward. His paperwork is brief and to the point. His website is easy to use. His staff is friendly and the scheduling process was without a problem. I like that he spent time with the exam and explained what he was doing and why. Pupillary dilation was something I did and I did the retina photo on recommendation but never feeling pressure. I kind of hate anything in my eyes (including when my wife tries to put makeup on me for halloween.....TMI?) and I must admit there was a time during the exam with the blue light that I thought I was in Minority Report and I was a little freaked out but he was kind and talked me through it. Positive straight forward exam with what I would expect from a doctors office, punctual, professionalism, friendly, educational, and reasonably priced. See you next year. read more

One could be forgiven for seeing all these 5 star reviews of Dr. Gore, and (perhaps) suspecting that people just have low standards these days. . . that maybe we're all just dumping hyperbole on this guy because we're relieved to find someone who is simply competent, qualified, and articulate amongst a sea of sub-par options. However, the truth of the matter is that Dr. Gore is entirely worthy of all these 5-star reviews and then-some. . . he's just THAT good. I think a lot of what sets him apart comes down to how he's able to inspire confidence so immediately. If you want to inspire confidence in your patients, regardless of specialty, there are two baisc ways to go about it: you can employ a carefully-rehearsed combination of eye contact, body language, speaking tones, and conversational keywords. . . . OR (if you're lucky enough to be a truly gifted individual) you can just execute your duties in such a precise and excellent manner that your cognitive gifts and sincere passion for what you do are all that's needed to inspire confidence. Guess which strategy Dr. Gore relies on? (don't worry, he's very engaging, pleasant, and articulate and carries himself as a confident professional at all times as well. . .) Upon leaving his office for the first time, I found myself questioning why I don't encounter more Doctors like him. . . Doctors that seem gifted enough to also excel in pretty much any other area of study they choose, be it a grant-powered research scientist or top-shelf software engineer. . . Perhaps I'll get to meet a few brain surgeons and other such elite specialists once I'm on the other side of middle-aged, but so far in my experience, I really thought that medical professionals THIS good at their job only existed on TV. On top of all that, the guy seems to be working his ass off. If Dr. Gore says he'll call you if an appointment opens up on the booked-up day you're hoping for, he means it. It would seem that he's well-adapted to accommodating all us flakey, procrastinating Angelenos without sacrificing any of the depth and thoroughness he's known for. .. (which means he's probably sacrificing things like lunch breaks and his dinner plans instead). Honestly, there isn't much I can say that hasn't already been said in previous reviews. I originally found Dr. Gore on Yelp for my boyfriend late last year. He had a great experience and I went with him several times to check out the office for myself. It's very boutique-ish which I love. They are definitely there to give you a one on one experience. When it came time for my exam, I knew exactly where to go. Be prepared to wait two weeks before an opening date because they don't overlap appointment times and everything is by appointment only. My exam was very routine and not as high-tech as my last one. (The last doctor had some crazy gadget that took pictures of my eyes) Still, Dr. Gore is very professional, thorough and goes step by step. Because I was getting contacts for the first time, he did a test to check the dryness of my eyes. Lo and behold, my eyes are pretty dang dry and my tears evaporate as soon as I produce them. Something no other doctor has ever told me and I definitely never felt like they were dry enough to cause me concern. I had a follow up appointment for contact fitting/training tomorrow but today, I got a voice mail from Dr. Gore himself letting me know that he has been sick and asked me to reschedule my appointment. Because I missed his call, he also sent me an email with the same message to make sure I got it. I don't think I've ever heard of another doctor calling his/her patient them self. Last thing, you deal with one receptionist and one doctor. No having to deal with some new person every time you come in. Neither me or my boyfriend has any kind of insurance. We both pay out of pocket and feel Dr. Gore is worth it. I'm sure you will too. read more

Very, very attentive and spends a lot of time with you. I needed an eye exam for new contacts and he also went over my current glasses prescription with me to make sure everything was okay with them. He did a very thorough eye health exam and entertained all my random eye questions. Sorry, but there are lots of weird questions that I come up with in a situation like that... should your contacts move on your eye?... yes, because tears need to get under the lense and there are things you don't want to build up under the lense cause they'll irritate your cornea. But you don't want the lense to move too much cause you need to be looking through the center of it. Anyway, attention to detail, didn't rush me, very kind and patient. Not the greatest selection of frames, but you can go frame shopping elsewhere... read more

Believe the hype. The 5 Star rating is very well deserved. This is the first optometrist that I would say I truly enjoyed visiting. Dr. Gore has a super cool personality and makes you feel instantly at home. I mean, he has a StarFleet badge on his jacket (So cool). It was definitely easy to relate and connect to him right away. These days, optometrists are like factories, churning you through the machine to increase their volume for profits. The doc shatters that paradigm with personalized service and the old fashioned patient doctor approach that has long been forgotten in this industry. I didn't feel rushed or pressured at any point in my appointment. It was simply a relaxed and enjoyable experience. As for the selection of frames, I was quite pleased. His optician Socorro was sweet and incredibly knowledgeable about both style and the tech specs on all of their hardware. Prices were reasonable and they didn't have any of the cheesy selections you find at a lot of the big box places. Something about that cold puff machine must have freaked me out, but no more!! Alas, a land free of puff and full of the kindest, most knowledgeable doctor one could find. My exam was greated by Dr. Gore himself, working in a quiet little office in Pasadena. Your parking is free, he offers cookies and tea. A genious of optic science. His attention to detail is unmatched. Even when it came down to choosing frames, where I admit I'm horrible at making decisions, Dr. Gore walked me through every step. AMAZING!! Deserves another star or two! I have worn glasses since I was 14 and in all my 20 years, I have not found an optometrist I like this much. The wonderful ladies in this office, not only know their stuff, they are passionate about eye wear. They are way into the design elements that make a great frame, understand the importance of a great fit and a frame that suits you, but also the technical details that go into lens durability, scratch resistance and wear - and let's not forget, how to save money well getting what you need most for your lifestyle - i.e if you're hard on your glasses like me :) So not only are the peeps here delightful, the frames are really affordable and they all look good - because they carry prodesign - who I learned while there, really know how to design great, well fitting frames. (There is a reason why prodesign have one of the top 3 selling frames in the US!) Anyhow, I couldn't be happier and I will definitely be back. If you have ever been terrified of going to the eye doctor then Dr. Gore is the Doc you should go to. Here's why: 1. There are tea, and cookies when you arrive. Trader joe's dark chocolate chunk cookies and some Tazo tea? What a great little pick me up. 2. He is very mild mannered, friendly, and he has a very soothing voice. He may have missed his calling as a voice for guided meditation. 3. He has a retinal eye camera! It's so cool. It does cost around $20, but he takes a picture of your eye then explains where the optic nerve is, the veins and arteries in your eye and a lot of other fun facts. 4. He does not make you do that weird blow in your eye thing to check for glaucoma, just a blue light with some yellow dye, much less painful. 5. His receptionists are super friendly. I happened in on their anniversary sale where there was cupcakes, and some mighty good deals on sunglasses. I had a really great time chatting, and trying on sunglasses. I'd never really thought of the eye doctor as a shopping experience, but I ended up with two pairs. End result: If you are in Pasadena and you are looking for a high quality, high integrity, truly excellent eye doctor, then come see Dr. Gore. read more

This should really be 4 and 1/2 stars. Dr. Gore is wonderful. He's kind, incredibly informative, and he had a Starfleet coffee mug in his office, so that makes him pretty cool. I had been avoiding going to an optometrist for a long time due to bad experiences and poor customer service, and I chose this office because of it's glowing reviews. I'm glad I wasn't disappointed. One of the receptionists seemed a little cold. Not rude, but just not very personable. The second receptionist, however, was very nice and made me feel a bit more comfortable when I spoke to her. So, although I was slightly put off at first, in the end my experience was a pleasant one. I'll be going to see Dr. Gore again for my next eye exam and contact lenses. read more

I saw the specialist and I was negative for a tear in my retinas, and he said that what Dr. Gore saw was not a tear but looked like one, and only 10% of optometrists could have seen what he saw. He said you have a very good doctor. Also if you have a medical necessity to see him, such as if your eye hurts, he will accomodate to squeeze you in if he is busy. I was super excited to discover that Dr. Gore is in Pasadena, now! I used to be a patient of his in Santa Cruz when I was in grad school (and oddly, I had much better insurance as a grad student than I do now as a university faculty member... hmmm. but that's another issue.) I haven't gone to see him here in Pasadena, yet, but my husband is trying to schedule appointments for both of us soon. When I saw him in Santa Cruz, I needed new contacts and I had been having a lot of headaches. He was the first eye doctor to discover that I had actually been OVER prescribed for distance - and my headaches were being caused by my extensive computer work. With correction, I was actually seeing better than 20/20, and he convinced me to cut back on the prescription so that my close vision was less affected. I did so, and problem solved! He was thorough, patient, and the only eye doctor I've ever been to who also recommended a line of cruelty-free contact lens care products. Those are not easy to find, and I appreciated that he cares enough to recommend those. I'm looking forward to continuing my eyecare relationship with him after an almost 10 year hiatus! read more

Most thorough optometrist I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. I've always had trouble with eye doctors. You know when they have the big machine up to your face and they switch lenses back and forth asking if one or two looks better? I feel like I never answer those correctly. Especially when they get close to the right prescription. But after living in LA for a while, I realized it was time to bite the bullet, find a doctor, and get some prescription sun glasses. I do not regret it one bit. Dr Gore takes his time with his patients and as a result, you get an accurate prescription. It's one of only two times where I've come away from the optometrist with glasses that don't give me headaches. I feel like he and his staff really care a LOT that you have a comfortable experience and you walk away feeling like it was worth your money. It's like visiting a family that just wants to include everyone. His office carries eye glasses from this company called ProDesign and they are just the coolest glasses I've seen. I love them! An accurate prescription and cute frames? Yes please! The ladies at his office are very good with suggest colors for frames, and adjusting them so they fit just right. And they seem really passionate about this, which I had never encountered before. Clearly they love their jobs. Parking is available but the entrance is a street north of the building and it's a one way street, so look into that before you go. It's free with validation, which they automatically do at the office. If you're a first time patient you have to go to their website and print out some forms that you bring filled out to save time. Their website is clear and easily navigated. I've recommended them to co-workers, neighbors and friends, and everyone has come away satisfied and impressed. I have been wearing glasses/contacts for over 20 years and have never had an eye doctor like this. He actually spent my entire appointment with me, performing the examination. He didn't step out to see other patients (or attend to other things), he didn't have his office staff performing the tests, he did it all himself. What a treat to find a doctor that gives individual attention to one patient at a time! I had pink eye and was going to Kaiser doctor because I have their insurance for general stuff. My eyes were taking too long to get better. So I paid out of my pocket without insurance and went to see Dr. Gore because I trusted that he could help me better than my Kaiser general doctor... And yes, he gave me good suggestions! Dr. Gore is a phenomenal doctor. I've been seeing him for years and have sent family and friends to see him. They've all come back impressed. Like everyone says, he is thorough, knowledgeable, and kind. He outdid himself on my last visit. He noticed a change in my eyes and suggested I go to a specialist as soon as possible, whom he immediately communicated with. It turns out, he was onto a condition that required quick care. If I hadn't seen Dr. Gore, well, perhaps I wouldn't see much of anything at some point. I am forever grateful, and cannot recommend him enough. I found out about Dr Gore thru my fellow yelpers, so I decided to give him a try and I have to be honest, this man goes above and beyond the call of his duty, he was very informative and even broke it down for us normal folk to understand. He gave me some mild prescription driving and reading glasses and it has helped me out tremendously . I wanted to try contacts for the first time and they were able to get me in for a fitting in the same day when another person cancelled their appointment. Dr. Gore was patient in teaching me how to use my new lenses and tried several different brands until we found the ones that fit my eyes best. The ladies at the front desk helped me pick my frames - it was great to have a second opinion since I came to my exam alone. Great discounts if you buy products the same day as your eye exam. I've had glasses since I was in elementary school so I've gone to quite a handful of optometrists. Dr. Gore is the best thus far. The eye exam has been the most comprehensive one that I've had. My other optometrists spent about 15 minutes on the exam and Dr. Gore spent at least 45 minutes this time. He was patient, detail-oriented, and answered all my questions without rushing me. Aside from that, he provided great patient education. He reinforced contact lens hygiene/maintenance and reviewed what my insurance covers. I left his office very satisfied and was happy that parking was free after validation. Two days after my appointment, my boyfriend lost his glasses and needed to replace them right away. I called Dr. Gore to see if he had any openings for an exam and unfortunately, he was booked up until the following week. Dr. Gore went out of his way to offer me various time slot options to accomodate me. He even called me back to tell me about an appointment cancellation. I was able to see photos of the inside of my eye and learn quite a bit about eye anatomy. It was so interesting and pleasant that I wanted to stay and learn all about optometry. I hate going to the eye doctor--mostly because I'm so nearsighted that trying to read that eye chart is so humiliating. Wait...I can't read the eye chart! But, Dr. Gore's professionalism, knowledge, and general friendly manner makes going to get my eyes checked worthwhile. He also alerts me to eye concerns that may need to be examined by an ophthalmologist, which shows to me that he also has a great deal of humility and knows his limits. But if it weren't for him, I wouldn't even know about those concerns in the first place. (Note: I am not your average patient and have more severe eye-health concerns than most, so in your case, he most likely will be able to care for all of your optical needs.)
