I've maybe had 4 or 5 classes here and yes I am a beginner, but I truly love the vibes here. It's also a BLACK OWNED YOGA STUDIO in the heart of brooklyn. Ok on to my class experiences: I love Sunae's classes. She has a very calm voice and sometimes she snaps her fingers to keep a rhythm for the breathing and poses. My favorite part about the way she practices is that she will go around the room and correct positioning which I love. What I want for myself to to learn the poses and maybe one day become a yogi myself as there are so many benefits to practicing. I also enjoy Maya's classes, especially Khemetic Yoga. I can literally feel the energy on me while doing the poses. It's a very different and amazing experience. I look forward to taking more of these. Maya has another class which is called first Sundays where there's a special theme, and i really enjoy those as well. One thing i will say is that her classes will make you break a sweat and i love that. I love that her classes push my body's limits, but her style of practicing is very nurturing and doesn't encourage self-criticism if you're not perfectly aligned. Extra info: * I don't always have a mat because it gets busy runnin the city and they have mats you can rent. * Another plus is they have community/ donation based classes in addition to the membership options. * it's affordable * they offer aerial (I def plan on taking that class soon). * I love their bathroom and they have all natural/organic soaps Oh and the Marcus Garvey location is closed. It's just the 499 Nostrand location now Almost forgot that have a special initiative for black men that want to try yoga. I recommend going on their website for more info. I really encourage more men to do it. I feel like the classes have had an overall positive effect on my mindfulness and flexibility and who doesn't want to be more flexible. read more

Unfortunately I feel I must warn people away from And Yoga. The owner of the business is unprofessional and rude. A few months after I upgraded my membership from basic to unlimited, I discovered that I was being double charged. Rather than taking accountability for the error and refunding me, the owner blamed me and said I should have canceled the first membership when I bought the new one. Huh? Why would I ever think I had to do that? That's not how any membership works anywhere. He refused to refund my money and only agreed to give me credit to make up for it. The space was vibrant and I got to enjoy Ariel yoga for the 2nd time again! I had a lot of fun and felt welcomed and encouraged. YAS TO LOCAL YOGA STUDIOS! I loved And Yoga. Our airbnb was located only a few blocks away, and yelp lead me to this wonderful cute studio. I purchased the class online the night before, and found the process very easy. I didn't know what to expect, but as a power vinyasa yogi, I found the studio to be easy to find and so adorable. I enjoyed my morning vinyasa class, taught by Deanna. She was so encouraging, friendly, and such a warm presence on a cold Monday morning. I was visiting from California, and really missed my yoga practice. I didn't know what to expect because And Yoga's policy is only sign-ups via their website and no reservations. The instructor doubles as the entry-person for the class, and the studio itself is like a small dance room with a bar (like for ballet) and hardwood floors. I arrived late, but she was such a gem and let me in...and she also laid a mat down on the floor for me too! I guess that's the best part about having online sign-ups...then you know how many people will show up for class. The room was very cold, and it wasn't heated at all. I'm used to a 80's-90's temperature for class, so I remained pretty neutral throughout class. We did a few sun salutations and mainly faced the entryway of the studio, since the setup doesn't allow for a comfortable practice for more than 15 students. I believe there was only 6 or 7 of us in class, and the best part was how diverse the yogi population was! In age and color, it's beautiful. Thank you Deanna for letting me in and onto my yoga mat that morning! And cheers to And Yoga and the wonderful community it has clearly fostered and supported. read more

I agree with the other Yelp review. This studio is highly UNPROFESSIONAL. They leave yogis waiting in the cold on some days past class time and then one day when I was 5 minutes late and alerted the studio, they locked the doors instead of graciously waiting like they make others wait. A man named Donald, who clearly has no idea about customer service, then proceeds to tell me via email that I lack grace and compassion and that they will charge me $25 for the missed class and auto renew my membership when I asked them to cancel. I called my bank to cut off the card so that this shady business couldn't be even more UNPROFESSIONAL. Very sad indeed how they're running their space, but yoga studios are a dime a dozen and thankfully we can move on to studios that don't spend their time trying to scam and offend their patrons. read more

I wanted to take a moment and respond to the business owner's comments on my review. First of all, he is the one perpetrating the sexual harassment I referenced in my original review, so I'm not sure he can objectively "take it seriously." Just a few instances I can remember off the top of my head: he told me I shouldn't wear shorts in bed stuy if I knew what was good for me; speaking openly about wanting to sleep with other women in front of his romantic partner & co-owner as well as other clients; arguing with me that women like to be cat called; telling one of the instructors she looked "so tired" without makeup on and should wear it more often. Now, we could assume that he doesn't understand or recognize these comments as sexual harassment, but if that's the case, he needs to wake up and smell the roses, it's 2018. Lastly, the fact that he is victim blaming me, saying I'm making these things up because I'm upset about canceling my membership is just as degrading as all the situations I mentioned above. Prospective clients have a right to know what they are potentially getting into with their bank accounts and their self respect when signing up with And Yoga. read more

Everything about the studio ambiance is absolutely beautiful, warm, and comfortable - and it was the perfect setting for an intimate workshop that allowed for really profound self-discovery with the other ladies. First off, the teachers at this studio are all amazing and if the review was only about them, I'd give them 5 stars. They are all super warm, knowledgeable and all bring their own fun style to classes. Maya is a sweetheart and her Kemetic yoga class is unique and recharging. Jesse's classes are more power, but she makes it fun and has a wonderful, optimistic and energetic personality. Tochi's class was my favorite! Tatiana and Sunea are also great. Oh and aeriel is so fun! Try it, you won't regret and Wolfie is awesome! As for the management of the studio, this is where I didn't feel as comfortable. The prices are excellent and the manger gave me a discount, which I really appreciated. They did change the policy once on the unlimited pass and I wasn't given any heads up or any communication. Now the real issue for me, they are NOT REQUIRING VACCINATION. When I inquired I was told that they were complying with all NYC guidelines and that yoga was a spiritual practice, not a gym or exercise studio. I can only assume that means they have a religious exemption, otherwise they are in violation. They ask unvaccinated people to wear a mask, but its an honor system and only temps are checked before class. In a small studio with breathe being the center of the practice, even with masks I was not comfortable. I feel for the teachers as they are the ones at most risk. I was sad to have to leave but why put myself at unnecessary risk when ALL other studios in the area require the vaccine? Doesn't feel like the wellbeing of the students is the top priority. Luckily my membership was canceled with no issues. read more

In the beginning, I was very pleased with my yoga sessions. The instructors were, and remain, a true asset of the studio. The management, however, has been another story. On October 15, 2019, I showed up to a 630p yoga class at its Nostrand studio. Myself, along with five other yoga practitioners showed up and soon we learned that the instructor was late. Because this had happened before, I knew to call the number listed on the website for manager Donald Edwards. He explained that the instructor would not be showing up and that the class would be cancelled. I soon learned that this had happened to other yogis as well, and that they had experienced other issues with management, including hidden credit card charges, no response to email inquiries, and last minute cancellations. There were mentions of the fact that customers were penalized heavily for not showing up or late cancellations ($25) while the studio itself routinely cancels classes last minute. I drafted a group email and was about to send it off to the manager Donald, when I received a phone call from him. He said that he had called to tell me that theirs is a "family run business," and that because yoga is a "peace practice" I mustn't complain. I told him that I had written an email on behalf of the group and that I would be sending it and that he could respond to it directly so that everyone would be kept in the loop. After sending the group email, I received a response from Donald who said he would not tolerate "accusations of intimidation or disrespect," and "venting at or the airing of personal frustrations in a group email forum." He sent a separate email directed to me kicking me out of the studio and telling me I was not allowed to email other members of the studio. I am pasting the email in full below so you can read for yourself: "It's unfortunate that we could not meet your expectations. Any accusation of intimidation is actually unjust and quite disingenuous. You called us to alert a situation but also decided to alienate us by being belligerent and venting frustrations, and any attempts to offer clarity and peace were met with discontent and an air of privilege. We create a safe place for everyone including ourselves and any negativity around that is something we will not tolerate. We actually felt very threatened by your tone and aggressive demeanor over the phone. Everyone has a right to feel safe as well. We don't condone that type of behavior and condemn any slander that arises out of it. As a yogini, you do have the option to practice anywhere and we appreciate that choice. We've built a member-focused studio where our members support us financially and energetically. We also gladly offer yoga to individuals like yourself who have not supported us financially or energetically, but somehow feel a sense of entitlement with our studio and this community when things don't go their way. We also have a commitment to our existing members to create a peaceful third-place free from any personal agendas and unnecessary drama. Hopefully, you can honor everyone's choice and freedom. With that said, we feel that your practice can be benefitted elsewhere, the free yoga promotion you signed up for has been canceled. Please honor others and do not email or cc our members about any personal or studio issues. We have a way to address these issues with peaceful clear solution-based communication. A positive environment has been created where like-minded individuals can share and practice. It's ok if you don't agree with our policies or are even upset about issues regarding the studio management but there is a way to properly get needs addressed with also honoring everyone's peace of mind." Tl;dr: Anything And Yoga management disagrees with is considered "abusive" and "negative," thereby foreclosing on any chance or space at a dialogue. If you organize amongst yourself and speak up, you will be accused of bringing in "bad energy" to the place, and will be told it will be bad for your karma. Like Donald said, there are many yoga studios in Brooklyn. Go to any one of them instead! read more

So, I have been searching for yoga classes for about a year; 2 important factors for me with going to an establishment is that it services people of color and also if it is black owned (I have been enhancing my support to black owned businesses lately) and Locale Village Shop meets both!. I found out about Locale Village from an article I read on Blavity.com and I figured I would give it a try, it was about a 5 minute drive from my job, so I booked a class online and went right after work. (Side Note: I have never done yoga before) I signed up for Deanna's class and it was nothing short of amazing. Deanna is a great instructor who creates a safe/nonjudgmental environment which allowed for much needed peace and mindfulness. It was a small intimate group of us in a close, clean space. For these traits I am grateful. I had a wonderful first time experience, when I get my student ID I will be going back so that I can benefit from the student rates ! SHADY BUSINESS PRACTICES I asked to cancel my membership back in early September 2019. I then realized I was still debited in late September and late October. After complaining, the monthly automatic payment finally got canceled. However the money debited for September and October was not reimbursed. I was offered the option between a three (3) months free membership or the refund. I chose the refund. That was October 31, 2019. Almost 3 months ago. I've sent several follow up emails since. I am totally in LOVE with this studio, the instructor (Meagan) and the aerial yoga class!!! Megan is upbeat, positive and encouraging!! I had been taking aerial yoga but had stepped away from it for about a year and I lost some flexibility and strength but Meagan was patient and willing to show me things more than once and encouraging despite my own frustrations. And Yoga is an oasis of good vibes and thoughtful instruction. In the two months I went to the studio, every single teacher I had was kind and knowledgeable, and my fellow students were friendly. This studio's instruction is pretty form-focused, and the small class sizes facilitate the teachers' hands-on adjustments (which you can decline, no sweat). It's a great option for those looking to strengthen their alignment and breath. Unfortunately the customer service is horrible here & they're becoming known for this. After attending a grand opening event as a new customer (formerly a member of Corepower Yoga).. I left with no information on times, dates, prices of classes (because they didn't have any).. I left a message on Sandy's (the owner) IG account telling her I was looking forward to going to patronizing her biz & as a successful business owner (15years) I would be happy to give her some pointers. No response. Went to the site later, had issues booking, contacted, no response. After discussing with a friend she lamented the same issues. I saw that the post regularly on IG so I posted a message on all of the above and that their customer service needs to be better... still wanting to support a new, young female biz owner, SHE BLOCKED ME!! This is the most ridiculous thing ever. She will have to learn the hard way, this is NOT the way to treat new clients. Not only that, but I also own a service oriented business that is #1 in our specialization, and was looking forward to passing along info in my database with thousands of clients. Next time reply to people trying to spend money with you.. all you had to do was say "I'm sorry we missed your message, how can I help?". Missed opportunity. read more

I'm in town this weekend & my sister talked me into going to a yoga class. Mind you, I've never done yoga. And I'm super clumsy. So the thought of hanging upside down on a yoga hammock made me feel very uneasy. We walked into the yoga studio & were greeted by Sandy, who has such a gentle spirit. I have been a bit removed from being physically active on a consistent basis, yet alone in a class/studio session environment. It was a big deal for me to be worked out well, but eased into it, so that my muscles won't betray me in the morning. Donald Edwards and his Village Lift Light - Strength Training Class, did just that. It felt great to incorporate light weights, cardio, & stretches, while feeling a good burn. Donald has a great personality and he pays attention to your performance, which helps to make you feel like your time is well spent as you work on your health goals. I also took Deanna Green's, Village Hatha I-II class. She's pretty amazing as well. Very informative as she moves you through the positions. She let's you know how to modify, if you're an out-of-practice yogi. I felt very zen and at peace after her class. If you need a great place to get your body back into the swing of things, And Yoga is the place to be. I can't wait to take the other classes! #stoked read more

I just took a yoga class here and really enjoyed my experience!! I'm just a beginner but my instructor, Teresa, did a wonderful job of making everyone feel relaxed and comfortable at their own skill level. The yoga studio is very small and can probably only fit about 6 people maximum, but I really liked the intimate environment. It was easy to see and hear the instructor no matter where you were sitting. They have free community classes once a week, which is what I attended, and you can rent a mat for $2. I've been a member to And Yoga from almost the very beginning. When we first moved to Bed-Stuy (more than seven years ago now!) there were very limited options for exercise in the area. And Yoga was a life saver! The studio has two rooms (back in the first year, we used to do yoga in the back room, fitting 6 people in that very small space :) ) The back room is now used for aerial yoga (with silks) and the front room is a sunlit beautiful space for the regular yoga classes. Several things make And Yoga stand out in the neighborhood compared to other (more recent) additions to the health and work out circuit: - this is a black-owned and black-run business and the owners live in Bed-Stuy. - the studio takes the quality of their teachers very seriously, carefully vetting them not just on paper but on trial classes where members give feedback. I've had, and continue to have, excellent teachers who strike a good balance between the amount of instruction and peace. Teachers always ask about injuries, state of mind, etc. before class and offer modifications during. - there are many who take regular classes here, and always some new faces; a good place to meet others in the community beyond the mat. - all shapes and forms, all experience levels, all colors and creeds, all genders and expressions are welcome AND a diverse group present in the classes. - mid-day classes are great for those who can avoid the pre-work and post-work rush hour times for exercise. As with most studios now, the charging/billing system is automatic and the teacher has to check you in; if this fails, you may get charged for late/no-show. This happened to me only twice in over 2 years (I go 3 or more times a week, so that's very few times!), and both times, I emailed the studio and the charge was canceled immediately. If you use the mindbody app, you can check yourself in, too. As with any small business, the studio is run by two very busy individuals. This is not some large corporation with unlimited resources and personnel. So life happens, and if you have a problem with a billing issue or something else, your problem will probably be addressed ASAP, and occasionally, you may have to be a bit more patient. Overall, for regular and new yogis, highly recommended for a good work out and a satisfying stretch. read more

I took two classes with Sophia, and had a great experience each time. Her classes were well paced, balanced, and I always left feeling refreshed. Her classes were always alignment focused, and she clearly has a ton of anatomical knowledge and led the students in focused and safe flow. The studio was always clean, well-equipped, and full of friendly faces. I encountered some extenuating circumstances, and studio management worked with me in an accommodating and flexible manner.
