2.75 Checked the menu before going and it sounded good, though kind of pricey for a fast casual place. We ordered at the counter and got our table, which they have ample of. The place looked well-maintained. No restroom. The food was brought to us. We ordered Fried catfish with a side- picked mac n cheese; honey fried chicken with a side- collard greens. Both came with cornbread and condiments. Can opt for 2 sides at a higher price. Food was served in to-go containers and first impressions weren't so good. The catfish said swai on the menu- upon reading on it, it isn't the same as the American catfish at all, but an inexpensive and lower quality option (why priced high on the menu?). There were 4 thin pieces, lightly breaded, was the most flavorful in our order at least. The chicken looked dry and we could tell it's not freshly cooked, esp after taking a bite- the outer part was hard and chewy. Too much honey too. The mac and cheese wasn't creamy, just ok. Collard greens were just ok as well. The cornbread was good, soft and buttery. read more

Hopped on a train outta New Haven headed to NYC for some soul food. We landed at Amy Ruth's... walls covered in Black legends definitely set the vibe. Menu had some creative names I went with the Ludacris: jumbo fried wings + 2 sides. Mac & cheese + collard greens. Off rip... food looked But that first bite? Mac & cheese had a weird garlic taste. Sweet potatoes (that I didn't even order) tasted straight out the can. Only things that really hit? Fried chicken Collard greens On top of that... orders were getting mixed up & it was HOT in there Couldn't even finish my tray. Hate to say it... but this one wasn't it for me. 6/10 might have to take that trip to Harlem next #GoodEatsInCT #NYCFoodie #SoulFoodReview #FoodieFinds #HonestEats read more

I've been to the original uptown Amy Ruth's and was excited to try this. It was...meh. It's counter service, no waiters like uptown. The service was great, but my hot chicken sandwich was dry and stringy, and not spicy. The fries tasted like frozen fries anyone could make at home. The "Ludacris" chicken wings were not great either. The collard greens were tasty. read more

Newly opened in Chelsea so I had to stop by. I love Amy Ruth in Harlem and they use to have some of the best collard greens I've ever tasted. I haven't been in a few years so I don't know if the quality is still the same. Love their chicken & waffles. I stopped by during Thanksgiving weekend so the restaurant was completely empty. I love the ambiance and wall art. Representation matters and it screams black owned as soon as you step in. I love the tables and seating but I don't like the big open spaced kitchen. I feel like there should have been a wall separating the counter space from the kitchen. I was so distracted by it. The price is suitable for the area but it's a little pricey nonetheless. I got the fried catfish dinner with 2 sides which was $26. you have a choice of 1 or 2 sides and it comes with a slice of cornbread. The fried catfish was lightly breaded which I loved but it was just a tad bit too salty for me. The Mac & cheese & sweet potatoes were also yummy but I didn't care too much for the collard greens. They were seasoned nicely but a little too rough & chewy for me. They wrapped up the container in plastic wrap to avoid any spillage and gave me an abundant amount of condiments. Overall the food was pretty good. I would definitely stop by again. read more

Always wanted to check out Amy Ruth's, and no better time than when you are starving! Upon entering the location, loved the atmosphere. The music, art on the wall, the warm friendly, inviting atmosphere, and the service was hands down the best. Sharmaine is wonderful, knows the menu, answered my questions, very friendly service, that makes you feel welcome. This location is more of a take out spot, but there is ample seating. The food is prepared fresh, served hot, with generous portions. The restaurant prices are fair considering the large portion sizes. My food was generous enough for two meals. When I say fresh, I mean freshly cooked. The food is not salty, or overly sweet, perfect balance. Each dish is named after a famous celebrity entertainer. The honey friend chicken brought me back to the good old days of the Shark Bar, and my Grandmother's kitchen! Have not seen Kool Aid on a menu in ages, definitely a Southern thing, because my Grandmother's both were from the South and Kool Aid was a staple whenever we went to visit. The baked mac & cheese definitely takes you back in time, it was delicious, absolutely perfect! They did not miss a beat with the taste, everything was perfect. My friend got the rib's, mashed sweet potatoes, and green beans. Both of our meals were delicious. Tip: Discounts are given to City/Government employees, and College students must show ID read more

AMY RUTH ON WEST 14 st betw5&6 Ave has permanently closed- it has been a few weeks. Set up was not pure restaurant- more arranged as fast food or quick eat in or pick up. I was always concerned about the fact the food was fried-in today's world. read more

Well now yes I am so thankful Ms Ruth came to my parts of Manhattan. The staff are kind and helpful and I love the decor inside just giving you power and strength I love the significance in the menu names because I just love greatness in African American culture. The flavors in the Obama meal I had made me have to sit down and properly put my paper napkin on my lap and eat the food slow to enjoy every bite. This is a place that will have you catering to your house just to impress the in laws. I loved it and will be back to try everything on their menu. read more

One of my favorite restaurants! They have opened up a small location in Manhattan. The menu isn't as large as the Harlem, they don't have alcohol, but they still have a great product. I opted for two sides, along with Banana Pudding. My friend had turkey wings and two sides. The service was excellent and the food was great. I will say I did not care for the Banana Pudding tasted different than what I was used to from here but that was okay. Overall, the food was good, the staff was very courteous-- it's a bit of a different being here versus the Harlem location but definitely more convenient to come to this location, for me. read more

My husband ordered through delivery service and was impressed with the packaging. It almost looked like it was shrink wrapped. Upon opening it up, the food was super that he had to wait to cool it down a bit. The fish was very flavorful as well as the candied yams Amazing! I felt like I was in harlem. The mac n cheese was very good also. Good portion size so I can only imagine dining in at this location or in Harlem. I wish he would have ordered the greens. Very impressed and would try again. read more

I'm generally more of a roasted chicken guy than fried chicken, but when I heard the beloved Harlem institution Amy Ruth's expanded to Lower Manhattan, I had to get over there to try it out. They're known for their authentic southern soul food, and every now and then I just desperately need some soul food. This new location offers a streamlined menu featuring their most popular dishes, and is more geared toward takeout or a quick meal. When I was asking the lady at the front what the move was, she was appalled when I told her I'd never had catfish. She said I had to get the fried catfish sandwich, so I got that and the honey-dipped fried chicken plate with 2 sides. To be honest, the catfish just wasn't for me. But I think that's more of me just not liking catfish in general. I couldn't really get outta my head I was eating a catfish. However, this chicken was BANGIN. It had a crispy, crunchy exterior, with tender meat on the inside. The well-seasoned crust was the perfect compliment to the moist chicken. For sides, I got the homemade baked mac n cheese and the homemade candied yams. Some good Mac n cheese and yams are like the Kobe and Shaq of sides, and these did not disappoint. My nickname in high school was Big corn bread, so you can imagine my exaltation when they threw in some cornbread with this meal. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__ read more

Just a short comment on each dish. Beef ribs. Too much sauce, too much fat. Fried catfish. Soggy. Too long on the steam table. Collard greens. Very little flavor. Needed bacon or something. Tasted canned. Corn bread. Fresh and good portion but lacked flavor. Hope uptown is better ;cause you won't make it in Harlem with the downtown menu. read more

This is a casual location and that means no public restroom. We arrived hungry and parched. I ordered the Catfish meal after initially ordering the Catfish sandwich which included fries. The meal provided a choice of two sides. I opted for macaroni & cheese and collard greens. The quantity was sufficient to fill my belly and leave some for lunch on the next day. The cashier presented the food/beverages at our table. I was pleasantly pleased with the taste of everything. read more

So when I heard that my favorite uptown soul food restaurant ( Sleep in Peace Carl Redding) had finally opened a downtown location, I had to try it out! I went on a Wednesday ight and ordered to go. The staff was super nice and my food was ready within five minutes. I ordered the bbq pork ribs dinner with Mac n cheese and candied yams. As soon as I smelled the bbq sauce my mouth was already watering. And the food did not disappoint! Now if you are looking for traditional, overly seasoned and high caloric food to make your arteries cringe, THIS AINT IT! The yams were very light and naturally sweet. And the brick sized portion of Mac n cheese was delightful filling and tasty. The ribs were a good portion( about 4-5 pieces with a lot of sauce- which is how I like it ) The meal came with a big piece of cornbread that was very fluffy and had enough honey on it that I didn't use any butter. I also saved half the cornbread for my breakfast the next day. And speaking of the next day- I had enough leftovers for lunch! Now price wise- keep in mind that Union Square rents are not cheap. So the food was a little expensive. But I had leftovers so it's all good. I know Carl would be proud read more

I was in hanging out in the area and to my surprise this location was recently opened. I've been to the one in Harlem. And this place will become a gem. It's in a great location and management & staff were super friendly! I had the catfish sandwich with fries and their Kool-Aid of the Day, which was grape, my fave! Catfish was nice and crispy like I asked for. I wanna come back to try their desserts read more

Overall our experience was split. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food quality was very disappointing and the price was somewhat expensive. The price for sides was ridiculous. $9 for a small cup probably 8oz. Of Mac n cheese. The fried chicken was definitely not fresh, probably refried. The meat was chewy and stringy. Waffle was overall ok Nothing special. The best part of my meal unfortunately was the french fries which were hot and fresh And the half sweet tea half lemonade was good if you like it sweet. Overall a very disappointing food experience. Maybe the Harlem location is better. read more

Yum! Greeted very nicely. I got the Fried Catfish w Mac and Cheese and Collard Greens (With half leftover for lunch the next day!) My friend got the BBQ Pork Ribs with a side of coleslaw, which she said was excellent. Very very clean. Excellent Service. Welcome to downtown Amy Ruth! read more

The service was great and the waitress provided hospitality as I waited for my food. The food was very delicious. My order (the fried chicken meal) came mostly on time; the sweet potato pie came a little late, but it was dessert so not so surprising. Overall, I definitely recommend this restaurant. read more

Can't serve Swai and pass it off as catfish! Real fish eater know the real! Stop being cheap and do better

Good, but not great or perfect. Ordered the fried fish and chicken wings. The batter on the fried fish was salty. Green beans were fine. The chicken wings were alright, not bad, not good. The mac & cheese was decent. Cornbread was phenomenal. No cocktail sauce available for the fried fish (is that just a Southern thing?) The sitting area inside is small, but enough to seat different parties. The air-conditioning is lacking. It needs to be colder inside, as all the customers inside at the time I was there were talking about how hot it was inside. read more

I never write reviews but this meal was so bad that I feel compelled to save others the trouble: I ordered a chicken thigh and leg to go. By the time I got home (A really short walk) the foil wrap and insulated bag were soaked with oil. The chicken was inedible as it had been fried or refried rendering the meat actually black and stringy. The corn bread was hard but the cole slaw was great though questionable regarding its freshness. Needless to say I was very disappointed. read more

Service/Management * Prices on the paper menus don't match the prices on the screen. * Meals don't come with a drink--cool. Think the cashier would ask if you want one? Nope! * Cashier asked, "This is to go, right?" So, am I not supposed to dine at these tables? * I dined in--nobody offered me water. * Nobody checked to see if I needed anything. * Nobody said a word to me after I paid. Ate a whole meal and walked out without so much as a "thank you." Food * Cornbread was hard on the top and sides, like it had been sitting out for hours. * Candied yams? Not candied. Just a baked sweet potato. No syrupy glaze. DRY. * Fried chicken wings--food came out in four minutes, so I know these weren't made to order. The inside tasted old, most likely sitting for hours and flash-fried. * Greens were chopped super fine (like canned greens). Flavor was halfway decent, but they were overcooked and too soft. This location feels like a money grab expansion. Judging by the fact that "management" only replies to positive reviews on Google, it's clear they DGAF about representing our cuisine and culture properly. Yo, Ms. Ruth! They're on 14th Street playing with your name. read more

The good... The service. The employees were really sweet and helpful. The place was clean and the artwork was a nice touch. Now the bad... The chicken leg was very salty and over cooked. Only half of it was edible. The other half (thigh meat) was completely dried out. The mac and cheese had a day old look. It was gummy and burnt. The collard greens tasted like it was from a can. You can tell the difference between home made and something that came from a factory. The sweet tea was good, and so was the candied yams. I've had several dinners at the original Amy Ruth's, and it was nothing like this. If you want good southern cooking, head to Amy Ruth's uptown restaurant. The flatiron spot needs some serious improvements. read more

My son and I visited today Amy Ruth's at 14th St Sharmaine was our greeter and was always looking to help other customers by giving them menus and welcoming them in. As good as the original on 116th Street. Chicken is crisp and moist.

Disgusting! I just ordered $30 worth of food for 2 burnt pieces of turkey wings and unseasoned yams. No sugar, butter, or cinnamon in these yams what so ever omg. Go to harlem. They season their food up there. This is a waste of money and so gross lmao smh. I'm sad af It's $27 for one side and 2 burnt turkey wings. I normally dont do this but no they can not get away with this. Unless you're an important figure, expect this quality. read more

Okay, so it breaks my heart to have to leave this review as I always want to patronize and support my community but I spent $26 tonight on refried chicken, a block of macaroni and cheese that was tasteless and the greens were okay - which was all that I ate of my meal. Not having money to throw in the trash these days and during this economy, I had no choice but to trash this disgusting meal. I have been to this establishment twice and both times the only folks in the building were the employees. The first time the meal was fresh and delicious and this time I expected the same. The meal tonight was soulless and a disappointment. Do better! Should have gone to Popeyes! read more

A mixed bag. Two visits at this new 14th Street location. Same cheerful reception. Very different food quality: Like a sunny Autumn day and starless night of the living dead. Last Thursday, I enjoyed the delicious catfish sandwich. The seasoned batter was delicious and the fish was moist and tender. The fries were crisp and not greasy. Even the bun was great. This Thursday (Thanksgiving 2024), I ordered the honey glazed fried chicken with collard greens. What a hit and a miss, which namesake Reggie Jackson didn't do often. The chicken was tough and stringy. The collards were oddly sweet. The cornbread fell apart when I tried to spread butter on it. I would definitely warn anyone who, like me, enjoys moist tender chicken legs and thighs against ordering this plate named for the legendary MLB National Hall player. Batting .500 is ok for baseball, but not for a restaurant that has a specialized short menu, meaning each dish should score at least an 8 out of 10. I got one 9.5 last week and a 1.0 today. Very inconsistent. Bad. read more

I popped into this place unexpectedly as I was walking by. I didn't even know Amy Ruth had a spot downtown. I literally did a U-turn. My server Taneeshia was friendly from the moment I walked in the door, in a very genuine way. She laughed because she saw the U-turn I made after seeing the sign 'Chicken and Waffles.' She was very helpful with suggestions on the most popular dishes. She checked up on me through out the visit, but not in an over bearing kind of way. I knew I was being well looked after. I ended up going with the smothered Turkey wings with collard greens and candied yams and cornbread. It was all seasoned properly and delicious. Those Turkey wings were falling off the bone they were so tender. I was so hungry that I forgot to take photos. But much love to the cooks and all servers there. read more

Terrible experience. Guy at the counter was clueless. He ended up overcharging us for our meal. He was not able to figure out how to reimburse us, so he had to call the manager over.
