My first time taking Amtrak. Todays trip was from Poughkeepsie Ny to Rochester NY . 5 hrs 23mins. Things were very just a bit difficult to figure out at first. Two live people at the station: one knew less than the other . When the Amtrak train did arrive up to the very professional looking conductor, and he told me my train would be there in just a few minutes and he was correct the train came. The young lady was very precise. She took my name off the list she said if I had to step in and walk to the left, but I kept on walking all the way to the end, but there were no empty seats, but it was fine I Only stood for 10 minutes until the next time the young conductor walked up to me and told me he would find me a seat and he did so at that point there was many empty seats and the seats were very comfortable. There is a plug right here for my phone the food was a little pricey, but it was OK. I expect that, it was so quiet and very restful and relaxing. Definitely a nice easy way to get to see my grandson. I will definitely use Amtrak again I May I say very affordable! read more

The subway was terrible. I ask for extra pickle and she snapped back I can't give you more pickles, we will run out. Asked for a couple of napkins and I heard only 1 napkin for each sub. Customer service must not be in their reading matter. I know you don't expect return customers being in a train/bus station, but just some human kindness would be good. read more

This is a good railway service. It's punctual, clean including the toilets. A decent buffet car and of course you can reserve your seats as it can become quite full. Good value for money. Recommended. read more

Conveniently located in the same station as the greyhound, you know you will not be left to stand outside in the cold or be alone. If you can't find an attendant at the booth, there are monitors all around the station listing the next departures and arrivals. There's ample seating and plenty of restrooms. This location provides vending machines for your convenience, but you can also get hot food/drinks from Dunkin Donuts and/or Subway. read more

Same old story, I asked the conductor to fix the Wi-Fi so I can work while on the train. He acted surprised it wasn't working but then when I said it never works he agreed and said your right. Also got stuck behind another freight train so we were barely moving. I don't get how they don't plan better. read more

Everything was great, but the Internet, the Internet was slow.... Can't live without it... The price for round trip from Rochester to NYC is a little cheaper if you were to take the plane. Amtrak does not check for Baggage, so there no fee or weight limit. read more

This station is shared with the bus (Greyhound, Megabus, etc) in one centralized location walking distance from Destiny USA (which is super useful!). The space downstairs has some food options including a Subway. Once the train arrived, it was easy to take the elevator downstairs and walk over to the mall where I had a work meeting. The wifi on the Internet was even mostly the entire way (only one short stint where it was slow) from Buffalo to Syracuse. It wasn't very crowded on this particular train, which might be why. read more

Amtrak is obsolete. The sleeper cars do not have enough outlets, the faucets are difficult and the food is prepackaged due to Covid19. All the sleepers we were in need of updating and a good vacuuming. On our first leg California Zephyr the attendants were helpful and pleasant. The leg from Chicago to Albany is awful. We could not find the attendant to make up the room for sleeping. None of the controls worked in our compartment so we could not hear which stations we were at. I would never take this again for the amount we paid we could have flown 1st class any airline read more

I have taken the train out of SYR several times over the past 30+ years. Since I am always headed west (out of NYS), there is only one train to my destination, whether Cleveland or Chicago. Wish there was at least one more, a morning departure. I like having free internet access and being able to check estimated arrival time when I am headed out or back, as then I am able to text whoever is meeting me at the train to give them a heads up on whether we are running late, on time, or early. I like the affordability, as I can usually get to my destinations and back for less than what it would cost me to drive. I am NOT a winter driver, and so I like having an alternative to get to my destination -- usually Cleveland the past several years. I appreciate not paying extra for every bit of luggage I need to take with me. I like the space between the rows of seats -- way better than on the plane. I am not sure how well they accommodate family groups in the coach section. Usually I travel alone, and so it's not a problem for me; but I see how it sometimes is for family units trying to get seating together. Often, during the daylight hours, I enjoy taking in the scenery, especially as we travel back to SYR, along Lake Erie and through the grape-growing area. I do not understand, though, why there really is no security check for riding the rails. I also am not too sure about why this train often runs late. read more

This is about the astonishingly great customer service I received from a Syracuse station Amtrak employee and if it reads a bit "over the top," it is because I intend it to be so. My husband and I took the train from Syr to Penn station, in Business class, and found it to be a very pleasant and super convenient way to travel. As happy as I was with the Amtrak train service, itself, the real mind blowing experience came after I returned home and discovered that I had left my iPhone on the train. Using the "Find my Phone" app, I tracked my phone on to the train parked at the train depot in NYC overnight. I could not, however, get anyone on the phone at Penn's Lost and Found. So, the next day, I followed the phone via GPS on its return trip back to Niagara Falls. In desperation, I called the Syracuse station fully expecting to be told that there was no way to find something that small that had fallen through the seat cushions -- on a moving train, to boot. Boy! was I wrong. A gentleman named Jim went above and way beyond what could reasonably be expected from a busy train station employee. He figured out the correct train, its current location, and got in touch with the train conductor to ask him to look for the phone. Once the phone was found, Jim used great ingenuity to get back in touch with me as the number on file for me was incorrect. He looked up the Amtrak rewards profile, tried several different numbers until he got my husband on his cell. When the train got to his station, he helpfully boxed up the phone, ensured that the phone would be on the train back to Penn Stn the next day, and advised me about the easiest way for me to claim the phone once it got back to NYC. I am forever grateful to Jim for taking the trouble to problem solve so expertly and for making sure that I was reunited with my phone (and all its critical information). Not only did he impress us with his consummate professionalism and skill but he made Amtrak look great for having an employee of this caliber on staff. I am a life long fan of Amtrak, now. read more

Simple the best way to travel from Syracuse to NYC!!! pay the extra $20 and upgrade yourself to business class. It is well worth it. It was an easy trip and it took the hassle out of worrying about parking a car down town NYC. Well worth it. On the return leg a sleeper car was an option and my cousin and I upgraded ourselves to that. Well worth it. We were offered a private waiting room in Penn Station which offered free coffee, water, soda and snacks while waiting for our train. Once we were on the train we were provided free dinner however had to pay for alcholic beverages. We both thought the dinner was going to be similar to that of an airline. Boy were we both wrong! She had a roasted leg of lamb and I had stuffed manacotti. It was deli-sh! All the services would have been over the cost of the sleeper car if we had to pay individually for it all and the purchase of a business class seat. We loved it so much we have already made reservations to do it again! read more

Lots of snow overnight did not plow the parking lot. That did not plow the parking lot. That made it horrible to park and to get inside without getting snow on you we had to get through lots of snow to get inside. My husband and I recently took an Amtrak trip from Syracuse to Chicago and then on to Williston, ND, the closest station to the Black Hills region of South Dakota where we were vacationing. The service was great and personalized. This was our first real train ride since we were children and found it to be a great adventure. As they say it is the journey, not the destination and anyone taking the train in order to meet a deadline is going to be disappointed. The first night we slept in a smaller than closet size Roomette which we had a bit of a problem adjusting to. We were advised by an experienced traveler to call Amtrack and get upgraded to a bedroom. We did, the agent was extremely helpful and friendly and the upgrade was not terribly expensive. It can be during times of high demand. On the return trip we were even given the handicap room and for some reason I am not questioning a $150 refund. The food on the Syracuse to Chicago run is boxed but the breakfast, the only meal we needed was full of fruit and other healthy offerings. The longer run to Williston had a dining room with several choices of entrees. They were totally adequate but not what you would call fine dining fare. The staff told us that Amtrak was probably going to do away with chefs and have only boxed meals. We think this is a bad move. We found that all our fellow travelers loved the train and would prefer even more amenities. Train travel was even more popular than we thought and I think many people would be happy to pay more to keep some of the glamour of train travel alive. On the return trip a violent storm had caused a derailment of a few freight cars which caused a 14 hour delay of our train. We rebooked on the next train and had a 5 hour delay. The station master in Williston, Paulina, took care of everyone as if they were her own children getting 2 hours sleep in 36 hours. She even ordered pizza for everyone. Despite the exhaustion everyone stayed in a good mood. For us it was all part of the adventure and getting to meet so many friendly, helpful people in Williston. read more

So I took my family of five on a vacation. We rode Amtrak from Syracuse ny to Grand central st. And then had to transfer to Penn st. I paid $320 round trip for my 5 year old twin grandsons and $604 for 3 adults to go to Langhorne Pa. first off my daughter had to hold my grandsons and I paid for them a seat! Second single people were sleeping in the 4 seater for family and no one said anything. And top it off while boarding the train the gap was so wide I tried to keep my grandson from falling in between the gap of the train and platform and dropped my purse and cell phone on the tracks! Omg! People were screaming for the conductor to help. He let down some stairs and got my purse and fone. My fone was shattered!!. The worst experience in travel I ever had. Beware!! Please watch your children and oh!! No matter how big that gap is it's only let down for wheel chairs. And as far as seats they asked me did I ask the person can we sit in the family section? Yes I did and he harassed me until he got off the train in Rome Ny. They won't fix my screen but they want to give me a 100$ vouches to ride the train to my death. Never again!! I have traveled extensively around Europe and the US and unconditionally this is the WORST train service I have ever used. The restrooms are filthy, the cars smell like urine at all time as bathroom doors are left open and the on time rate is non existent. We left Niagara Ontario this morning at 10:45(already 30 minutes late) and things went downhill from there. We are now in Syracuse and the train is projecting 11/2 hours additional delays. Never, ever again. Took a train to the city for a weekend trip because Ive never taken a train, and it sounded "charming". Yeah, whadda sap! The ride down sucked plenty on it's own, but the train from Manhattan to Syracuse.. What is normally a 4+ hour drive... Guess how long it took? Wait for it... I'm gonna first tell you about the fact that the advertised free WIFI didn't work, the light above my kid's seat had no protective guard on it and burned my kid badly, the safety measures to ensure a lunatic terrorist isn't boarding with bombs does not exist- and I mean, zero bag check, metal detector, NOTHING.... The "cafe" car is really just some schlep microwaving jimmy dean breakfast sandwiches for 5 bucks a pop ... There was a layover in albany.. Wtf is a "layover" on a train? During which, the lights went out, accompanied by an announcement that the train has "lost power", and during this time we should please NOT USE OR FLUSH THE TOILETS. Needless to say the restrooms eventually smelled like a porta-potty that sat in the sun all day. ..... And the travel time from NYC to Syracuse? OVER TEN EFFING HOURS. Yep, we boarded the train at 3:45, and got off it at 2:00am! 10 hours from NY to Syracuse? What a slap in the face. Who the F ever heard of "freight traffic"? Thats what one jamoke said when I asked about one of the delays as we sat still... Absurd. If I could make one suggestion to all staff and management at Amtrak, it would be to find new work, you blow at this. read more
