It was a 15 min ride from Rome to Utica. It was only a 2 minute stop. Only one passenger entered our car. There were no seats left on our car so he had to find a seat on another car. read more

the utica amtrak train station is one of the coolest and cleanest stations i've been to!! when taking the train, i always get to the station early to give myself extra time and this is one of those stations that you actually wouldn't mind sitting/waiting in. the staff is very friendly when asking questions about track assignments and arrivals, and the restroom facilities are very clean. they even have soft drink and snack vending machines if you want to pick up something before your trip. there is also plenty of parking so you don't have to worry about parking your car on a random street. love this station!! read more

I had to take the train for the first time. I was a little anxious. Utica train station was very nice, clean and well staffed considering a winter Storm. It wasn't too difficult to navigate with a little bit of help for this newbie, but overall quite easy. The staff at the station as well as on the train or helpful and friendly. The café on the train was delightful. And you can even have a cocktail if you so choose. It made this 4 1/2 hour trip to Buffalo stress-free and enjoyable. Only downfall was the limited number of trains. I'm sure there's a reason for that. I'm just saying it was something that may prohibit me from taking the train more often. I'm heading back from Buffalo to Utica today and will post a review on the exchange Street train station in Buffalo and my experience returning to Utica. Overall glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and will definitely take the train again. Turns out it's a nice way to travel, especially long distances. read more

I am not sure if this is a review for the Amtrak Union Station or the Amtrak rail passenger service. I have plenty of experience with both, though my review will be focused on the station. I have been coming here for the past 30+ years. I am a railfan, and my grandfather who lived in Utica would always bring me here to watch the trains. I have seen the station in the 1980s when it was run down, when it was empty, when the underground tunnels to the interior track platforms were visible, and when it was dirty. I watched it be reborn in the 1990s as the city began moving in and using the space, and the interior was cleaned up, the tunnels were safely partitioned away, and civic pride began to grow. I saw the 2000s when the Adirondack Scenic Railroad moved into the station and the expansion of the station over the tracks to the interior loading areas took place. And even now, I have seen it on weekends when it hosts farmers markets and people come here to ride the trains. I miss the little train store in the station, though to be honest I just usually bought magazines there. Their models were highly overpriced. But, it was nice to buy something to take with me back to my grandfather's house. Whenever I am in Utica I always stop at the station. Even if I know a train isn't due I stop by to check the schedule, use the restroom, and walk through and reminisce about the times with my grandfather. Sometimes I go on the elevated portion of the station and watch the trains roll through. It makes no difference of the event. Funerals, Christmas and Thanksgiving, day trips... whatever the reason, my family knows I cannot drive through Utica without stopping at the station. read more

So tonight i took the Albany, NY to Utica, NY train home, as i have done a few times when visiting my mom. Well tonight they forgot to let us off in Utica and kept going. The train employees told us which door to go to and then they didn't open the doors. And there was no one around to help us. They continued en route and we had to alert them they had prevented an entire train car from exiting the train. They had to make a pit stop in Rome, NY, dropped us off (about 20 of us), stranded at a closed train station and told us to "figure out how to get back to Utica". No apologies for not letting us off the train, no cab/Uber fare, nothing. It was insane. When asked if Amtrak was going to pay for our rides back, they said "absolutely not." One of the gentleman that was in this predicament with me asked for the employee's name and the employee not only wouldn't give his name, but obscured his name tag. Our conductor was Dan, and he was the one that said they would stop in Rome to let us off. They left us stranded with no way back to Utica. The Rome station was not only closed, but at 9:10pm on a Sunday night, it was desolate, and not in the best section of town. This is completely unacceptable! read more

This 1914 NYC station is gorgeous and no wonder, it was designed by the same architect who designed NYC Grand Central, Buffalo Central Terminal ! In later years, other railroad companies relocated here. Fortunately, the building houses a number of city government offices so the future of the building will not be in doubt. Inside is a barber shop and the Adirondack Scenic RR office and a very good restaurant (lunches). As a railfan location, the Amtrak platforms share the line w/ CSX and they speed by at 60 mph. read more

Tonight we shared dinner with a Vietnam vet. At first I was hesitant on how eating dinner with a stranger would be. However, it was a phenomenal experience. My girlfriend is a current medical student. He has 4 children all in the same field, which was an easy talking point. As he shared his stories you could see he was a proud father. He continued to share stories about his time in Vietnam, which were extremely moving. Your service to our country doesn't go unnoticed. After dinner he insisted on paying for our bill. We begged otherwise, but he was unmoved. Thank you Bill Bush for a great experience. Pay it forward. read more

It's the best train station in New York State outside Grand Central Station, with a bridge over the tracks and plenty of activity from the Polar Express... It's fun to take a train out of here, much better than Buffalo Depew or Rochester. read more

Okay, so before I start my rant id like to say that I downloaded the yelp app just for this. I want to start off by saying the complete experience of Amtrak is similar to watching grass grow or paint dry. It felt like I was living in my own personal hell. I chose the train to travel for the novelty of it, but as the trip continued, it came apparent that the novelty was only for the beginning of the trip. I was going to Trenton from San Francisco and my first train took about 2 full days. The problem was we were starting and stopping from Denver to Chicago. We were 4 hours behind schedule and I missed my connecting train to Pittsburg. So they put me on a train headed for New York instead. I am currently on that train now. We are 2 hours behind because of track construction. So all in all 6 hours of my time has been waisted so far. The train themselves are nice, not the best but it would do. The problem I had through out the trip was the fact that each car I was in was colder than Alaska in a snow storm. Idk why they insisted on putting the AC on because I couldn't feel my feet, I wasn't the only one too. This was continues for 3 straight days, making it very difficult to sleep or get comfortable. I currently am running on no sleep and when I do sleep it's only for like a 30 minute intervals. The food on the train looks like something I wouldn't even eat and I eat pretty much anything. The Italian sandwich I had looked like rubber and they charged me 7.50 just for that. You really are at the will of Amtrak, cuz they won't let you bring a lot of food on board, maybe some snacks. Finally the service, the people of the train were very rude and didn't really take time to explain why we were running late and sometimes had something sarcastic to say. I am 21 years old and I'll be traveling a lot in my life, but Amtrak has lost thousands of dollars in future profit from this experience from me. read more
