It only took a short walk and an escalator ride to get to the train platform. Passengers were able to wait comfortably inside the station until the train arrived. The train arrived on time, and it was very clean inside. The power outlets at my seat worked perfectly, which made the trip more convenient. The seats were comfortable, spacious, and offered much more room than airplane seats. Overall, the trip was smooth, relaxing, and enjoyable.

It's hard to manage luggage with either one and worse with both. The red caps at the station are absolutely fantastic. They help us board the train, help us off the train and today they let me go down to the tracks with them to find my mother who was traveling alone. They're friendly and cheerful and polite and kind. They take a lot of the stress off of me by being such great people.

Warning: the new taxi rip-off situation at Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak station by "Fair Deal Car…read moreService". They have taken over all taxi service (despite what's imprinted on the side of a cab) at the station and charge top-dollar Uber limousine rates. They are NOT a local a taxi company, but a fancy car services one. What used to be a $15-20 ride across the river to the city center is now a whopping $45! The dispatcher guy who I dealt with clearly struck me as a fast/smooth talker con man who was overly gratuitous as he ripped me off, despite my objections to the rate. Once I got on the road, the kind driver explained the whole backstory to me. He told me next time to just make an offer of at least half of what i would be quoted and they might settle for it. Or to call a local cab company ahead of time. He said he used to drive his own cab for a local company, but this is a new company that came on the scene and ran all the normal taxi drivers out of business and he then had to go work for them. This one gentleman named Mr. Ainsley, on the Lakeshore run to and from Chicago was so busy and professional it was like poetry in motion. He escorted kids safely back and forth to bathrooms, parents etc., and you could tell they were relaxed and trustful. He flew past collecting garbage from various areas, looking to make sure everything and everyone was cared for and safe. I think he puts in more miles than the train does ! He clearly is dedicated to keeping Amtrak clean, safe and efficiently run so passengers ride happy and the company is well represented. That said, every employee I met from getting tickets to greeting people as they got on or off trains was caring and positive and a tribute to their professionalism. Good people, all.

The station building is,…read morethese days, a limited-hour ice cream shop (which is lovely though not helpful for the most part). There is an overhang area that is nice to have when it's raining. No restrooms. Plenty of (free) parking is available for travelers, and I've never had an issue with leaving the car there for a couple of days. With connections to NYC, Canada, and Vermont, this quiet station is well-located for northern travelers.

Amtrak usually provides parking...otherwise what would be the point. I parked my car left it and hoped all went well. It did and feel confident to do so again. We opted for the upgraded tickets with meal service (afternoon tea), and we loved it! - The actual experience at the station was smooth, and the conductors were upbeat and friendly. - The three course meal, which was handled by a local cafe (Cafe Mornings), was tasty and filling, and the two people who handled service were warm, welcoming, and friendly. Things to note: - Not sure if this is is how it works for all rides, or even if there will be different routes available, but FYI, this was essentially the same route ( out and back), done twice (so the same actual route 4x). - There were no restroom facilities available during the ~2 hour ride, but what they did was return to the station at about the halfway mark, at which point people could debark to use the facilities and then get back on. Overall, this made for a great mother-daughter outing, and I would gladly recommend this dining and sightseeing experience to anyone looking for something a little different for a future outing in the Catskills.

My boyfriend rode this train back in 1991 with his grandparents and loved telling me about it when we take trips upstate, I'm so happy they were able to get back open to the public after being closed due to COVID. We are excited to hear about more events and bring our friend and family.
