This is a fascinating relic from the glory days of railroading long gone. I have been coming here…read morefor at least 30+ years, and my earliest memories are of my grandfather bringing me here to watch the trains. During the 1980s, it was run down on the outside with abandoned tracks and platforms and connecting subterranean steps to nowhere. The inside was filled with huge with stone pillars, long smooth heated wooden benches, and small hobby and newspaper stores. As a kid, it was as close to an abandoned castle that I would ever see. And it had trains! Fast forward to today, and things have changed. A scenic railroad operates out of the station. The city has revitalized it and now houses some of their municipal offices. A nice restaurant has moved in. A glass walkway connects the far track to the station and offers great views of the tracks. A farmer's market meets here on Saturdays. While other large stations have been destroyed for "Amshacks," it is wonderful to see this building get a new lease on life. The New York Central Railroad may be long gone, but its history remains.

We went to ride their rail bikes. We road rail bikes before in Cooperstown. Loved it! Much better…read morebikes. These bikes were like someone made in a garage. No bottoms so you cannot bring anything with you at all. Just a cup holder. Black flies were terrible. You stop to turn around and it's just 2 picnic tables and black flies. You have to wait until everyone gets there. Well the people in back where 20 minutes behind. The rest of us waited while being eaten by bugs. My chain came off the rail bike on way back. Had a nice time but would never go back with family. Should have sign use bug spray or go in shop behind station and buy the electric fly swatter to kill the bugs. Very unpleasant. Would not go again. If you are not in shape maybe ride the train.

Terrible experience Traveling out of Utica we were delayed…read morefor 1 hour. Upon arriving at Old Forge we were told we were not going to be able to leave the train, just going straight back to the Utica station. Once informed of the situation we couldn't even get food or drink as they had already closed the kitchen. That, though, was apparently misinformation as other passengers were walking back with drinks. Although their food was unavailable. The only bright spot was an attendant named Lois. She was very personable and fun. And seemed to be the only one to know anything. Doubt we will be doing this again. Won't be doing this again.

We took Amtrak from Buffalo, NY to NYC. It's an 8 hour trek which sounds like a long journey. It…read moreactually went by quickly and was very scenic, I liked that I could get up and stretch my legs. Each stop was 2-5 minutes at most. What I thought was strange is that the portion of the train with the food closed down just around noon. Seems to me that would be the high time for folks to what a nibble of something, The seats were comfortable, conductor was pleasant and everything was orderly. If you're not in a rush, it's a nice way to travel.

Amtrak, Amtrak, Amtrak... what can I say? For one, though my departures from this station are…read moreusually no more than a few minutes late, freight traffic usually means I arrive at my destination an hour late. With the comfortable seats, adequate leg room, and free wi-fi, I usually don't mind the delay, but your time might be more important than mine. Still, Amtrak is a convenient, affordable option for those medium-length trips. Regarding this station in particular, it's pretty barebones. There is a small waiting room that will seat maybe six or eight people as well as restrooms for men and women alike. There is no ticket counter or attendant, but since Amtrak has smartphone apps to buy your tickets and then show right on your phone, the frontier-like, unmanned train shack in the wilderness (or just outside Amsterdam city limits) isn't bad. It also offers free parking and has room for maybe a dozen cars. I've never had any trouble leaving my car there while going out of town for a week, but, if I had left it at the Albany-Rensselaer Station, for example, I'd have to spend another $30 to pay for parking, so free parking is a nice plus.
