I just love the Auto Train, which goes between Lorton, VA and Sanford, FL. It's a relaxing way to travel. You see nice scenery (far better than 95), and can sit back and relax and watch the changing landscape, without the stress of navigating I-95. The sleeping cars bring you back to another time, when travel was more about the journey and it lacks the hectic pace of the airport and all the stresses of getting through security, gates that change 5 times before the flight, and the whole airport experience. No invasive TSA. Dinner is served in the Dining Car with white tablecloths and fresh flowers. My salmon in puff pastry was delicious, and the chocolate cake is sinfully rich. I traveled only 2 days before Christmas, and I was lucky enough to have Anton as my cabin attendant. I walked the whole train and his car (5246) was the only one decorated for Christmas. There were lights and ornaments and merry greetings, adding a festive flair. Thank you, Anton. You made it a spectacular experience. read more

We traveled on the Palmetto train with Amtrak from New York to Georgia, looking for a relaxed alternative to flying. In some ways it delivered -- the Business Class seating is spacious and comfortable, and the free Wi-Fi was excellent and much appreciated. Unfortunately, the café car experience significantly detracted from the trip. The café service was consistently unprofessional, with orders not being acknowledged, requests needing to be repeated multiple times, and items handled abruptly. The café was not busy during these interactions. As the trip progressed, the experience became uncomfortable enough that our family stopped using the café altogether, despite being only halfway through a long journey. We also received dismissive and curt responses when asking simple questions about stops and timing. While the seating and onboard amenities were very good, the customer service was not. Experiences like this point to a need for stronger management oversight and customer service training, and they have unfortunately made me question whether I would choose Amtrak again for a trip of this length. read more

This Amtrak station is either the beginning or final stop of the Palmetto train between NYC & Savannah. I had taken it as an economical one way option to Charleston. There are two other lines coming through here that head to Miami. The station has next to nothing, so don't bother coming here more than 15-20 mins before your train. We Ubered from Savannah and it was like 15-20 mins away. Just keep that in mind in case you end up getting into Savannah late. read more

We just took the Amtrak Floridian from Chicago to Savannah. Our only problem was the train gets into Savannah at a little after 3 am. The station is in an industrial area, miles from the historic district. I was worried about getting transportation to our hotel at that hour, and I was right. My Uber app tried for half an hour to find a car, but finally gave up. I tried different taxi companies and finally found one to pick us up. The personnel at the station were friendly and helpful, it's just the transportation at that ungodly hour WAS a problem. read more

We recently took the Silver Meteor to Savannah and back for a three day trip. Rail station in N Charleston was okay, staff were somewhat cordial. Train ride there was fine, Amtrak staff were communicative and pleasant except for the special folks that just make their job difficult. The trip back was "different" to say the least. Fellow travelers decided to clog three toilets and have difficulty understanding rules of the rails. Loud passengers, phones, music and expletives from others. Didn't make for a pleasant trip back but Amtrak held true to their times and we arrived home on time. Will ride again but will upgrade accommodations next time. read more

This was our first time to the Savannah Amtrak Station. The station was decent sized and clean. The employees were helpful. We waited about an hour for our train without incident. The station is in an industrial area. Lots of big truck traffic depending on time of day. Also, early in the morning there was a foul odor in the area. We'd use this station again. read more

Surprise, Amtrak is a great and cost effective means of travel. Plenty of leg room in coach, arrived on time.

I've never traveled by train so this was a whole new experience for me. There's no luggage check like the airport so it was pretty quick and simple process to get checked in, and even faster process to board. It does stop at stations along the way so it's not a quick way to travel but very scenic. Once on the train, they direct to available seating which was a bit confusing when you see people already sitting at the spot. Would have been good to know that it doesn't really matter where you sit so long as you don't hog a seat. Wi-Fi and cell service was horrible but it is available. Widow seat has the power outlets to charge your phone. Food service was awful, so I'd recommend bring your own food for the trip, which you can and a full size bottle. Bathrooms were very small, but were kept clean and stocked. read more

Traveling on the auto train from Lorton, VA to Sanford, Fl. As usual there's always problems with this service. Today it was a bridge that was on fire and we were delayed for 8 hours until daylight could assess the situation. It was okay to pass and then we slowly meander to Savanna,GA where we are advised that we needed a new crew. Apparently it wasn't coordinated correctly and we now have to back up and idle the train for a hour or two. Not good. Hopefully we can continue the trip without further delays. This hopefully puts us in around 6pm or later. Once the car's are off loaded it could take up to 2.5 hours. I've waited 3 before. Here's what the real problem is: most of the passengers are elderly and shouldn't be driving for hours in the dark. Hopefully no one gets hurt as this has become a 28 hour ordeal. I'm aware of the uncontrollable situation, however it's always chronically a bad experience riding Amtrak. I have plenty more to say about other past experiences with this train, but at my age I have no other choice. Best to forget the details and pray that everyone makes it home safe today. It's really a good place to rail-fan and travel to Charleston without highway traffic, i always going to station to see train watching past through the station each day, but for others trains like palmetto northbound by morning, they just departed to New York or Washington DC to go. We just watched other Amtrak trains when they got on time or getting late to see it. But for the station looks pretty nice. read more

I don't know the history of this building, but the interior is in need of fresh paint and a deep cleaning. It doesn't smell dirty which I greatly appreciate. Everyone keeps to themselves or their group; no commingling to be had amongst the passengers. The restrooms smell very fresh and are impressively neat. There's only one person working the ticket window with a longer line, but perhaps that is due to the early hour. Overall, not an uncomfortable place to be during the overnight hours waiting on a train. I feel safe in this location and may take another train if unable to make plane reservations. read more

I'm sure it would have been fine if my husband would have been able to use it. We lost our money and his trip because the departure time was changed. Yes, you sent me an email about the departure time changing but it was too late. I didn't have access to my email when it came and didn't see it until after the fact. Amtrak needs a better notification system than sending an email. What about an automated voice mail system or even a text. So disappointed. We've never used Amtrak before but thought we had a good solution when traveling between Florida and South Carolina. Too bad it didn't work. Won't try it again since he had gotten up at 4 am which allowed him plenty of time to get there for a 7:30 departure. read more

The Amtrak Auto Train I have found to be one of the most uncomfortable ways to travel. The temperature inside the cabin was freezing such that all had blankets on them in July. When you say something to the conductor you are met with indifference and assured nothing will be addressed. read more

Gorgeous on the inside, feels like a step back into the 50s or 60s The lady working over night wasn't the friendliest. The station isn't in the best part of town, but wasnt' too too scary in the middle of the night. The is a "strict limit" on your bag size and weight, so I had to repack and shift items around so I could check my large suitcase. Once boarding the train, we found out it really didn't matter. I didn't need to check the big suitcase to begin with. As long as you can get the suitcase on the train and in the overhead rack, no one cares how big/heavy it is. read more

Leg room and seating is much more comfortable than airline travel, but the delays aren't worth it. While traveling from Chicago to Savannah, Amtrak decided that my luggage would enjoy a side trip to Los Angeles!! This was on a Saturday and here it is Thursday and still no luggage!! Thanks Amtrak. You kinda ruined what was to be my only vacation this year plus you cost me a lot of money having to buy all the extra clothing and stuff that was in my luggage. Needs an ATM. Location is a little horror movie at night. The price of taking amtrak vs other forms of transportation? Really doesn't compare. It's pretty cheap. I'm kinda wondering why it isn't more popular? I know it seems like an outdated form of transportation considering technology, but you really can't beat the price. I rode from Savannah to Washington DC. Agents or whatever they are called on the train were polite and efficient if not a touch brash. Prices in the Cafe Car are horrendous, but you do get free non-alcoholic drinks if you're business class. WiFi going up was only decent in the Cafe car, but on the way back down south, it was pretty decent in the Business car. read more

D(name abbreviated) an employee of Amtrak was very rude, condescending and belligerent when my father (93 yrs old) asked for his luggage. She yelled that she was told that he didn't want his luggage, that they didn't have time to go back and forth....etc. I have never experienced or witnessed such behavior. Picked my dad up here, then the next day dropped him and my son off to go back to Ft Lauderdale. The inside was nice and clean from what I saw and the employees were nice. read more

Can't decide if Amtrak is purposefully going with the retro look or if they won't spend money to upgrade the facility. Waiting area seating is padded but you can't tell. The station is clean and well lit and seemingly in good repair but the TV didn't work and there aren't vending machines inside. read more
