My first train ride and I got to say, glorious! I can look out the window! Drink wine (no dui!) and walk around to stretch my bones, if need be. I took the train to DC from Charleston. The staff were friendly and efficient. I rode in business class, which offers bigger seats and extra leg room. I was comfortable and felt safe during my journey. It doesn't hurt there is a food cart to visit when munchies are needed. All in all, I would totally take a train ride again. Much easier than going to an airport where people seem to be in a rush and entitled. Thanks Amtrak!

    Lounge car lounging

(Written by my husband, Michael Malec) Amtrak- thank you for an amazing train ride through and through! We enjoyed the lounge car, see my wife Ashley below, and your wonderful amenities on the Palmetto 90. But most of all, we enjoyed the amazing customer service your warm staff provided us! Thank you again for a great trip and we look forward to the train ride home! Because of our wonderful experience, we're now planning to take more train excursions in our near future. We've already recommended train travel to our friends, and na Uber driver or two! Thank you again for your hospitality, and safe and comfortable trip.

All shiny and new over here

Charleston, you asked for something shiny and you got it! You only had to wait what 40 years?! The old station complete with the sad remnants of segregation era rules with separate waiting rooms and bathrooms for whites and blacks is finally nothing but dust! I'm so glad to see that vestigial building is now longer what train riders see when they first arrive to Charleston. The new building has a fairly plain/school-like exterior. It is just a nice commercial building with a coastal nod in the metal roof and many palm trees. The parking was VERY confusing and you have to take an incredibly sharp right turn to get into the first little parking/loading area. There is also a much bigger parking area to the left of the building but the entrance was blocked by barricades. Basically there was no where to legally park when I arrived so I parked in a loading zone. (I'm assuming the parking will get better as their construction and signage is completed). There also appears to be a long loading area to the left of the building that I presume would be for uber/taxis and other folks not needing to park. The baggage claim set-up has changed from the old station too. You used to go to an outdoor area and show a ticket to get your bag. Now you wait inside and they put the bags in a large storage area and you get hand your ticket inside to the employee. This is a nicer set-up since you'll be inside where it is cooler and less buggy. The interior had plenty of airport-style seating. I didn't see very many outlets or ways to charge up devices, but perhaps those are still being installed.

I plan on visiting Charleston in a few weeks......what cab services are available to pick me up from the train station?

You can arrange for an Uber/Lyft driver to pick you up, or there are a couple cab services there. I used Yellow Cab on my arrival for a lift to my hotel, but the ladies at the station will happily provide you with the phone numbers to local cab… Read more

The Train Station is an official stop on Amtrak and came up as one of the things to see. The building seemed new-ish and well kept. When we arrived, it was pretty deserted. There was not a soul to be found and all the doors seemed to be locked. I looked up the Amtrak website and there is nothing available here, no services or facilities. I think you have to purchase a ticket online and you just show up to either ride the train or get dropped off at this location. According to the good ol' internet, the station was purchased in 2010 by the town of Yemassee for one dollar. However, while we were there, we ran into two older gentlemen and they discredited that rumor. One of the men said something about the station being purchased during his tenure as Mayor and said something that if they bought the station for one dollar, they were doing pretty good...or something along those lines. Well, how about that? Meeting a former Mayor of Yemassee! One cool fact about this station is that between 1915 to 1965, it is estimated that at least half a million Marine recruits started their careers at Yemassee train station as they passed through here to make their way to Parris Island. There is a plaque on the station wall to recognize this. I wouldn't say you should go out of your way to see the station, but it was cool to run into a former mayor and learn about the history of the station. Also, during our time there (about a total of 15 minutes), there were multiple trains and other train components (not sure what they are called, but maybe maintenance type trains?) that passed us and it was fun for my kids to wave to.

You see nice scenery (far better than 95), and can sit back and relax and watch the changing landscape, without the stress of navigating I-95. No invasive TSA. Dinner is served in the Dining Car with white tablecloths and fresh flowers. My salmon in puff pastry was delicious, and the chocolate cake is sinfully rich. I traveled only 2 days before Christmas, and I was lucky enough to have Anton as my cabin attendant. I walked the whole train and his car (5246) was the only one decorated for Christmas. There were lights and ornaments and merry greetings, adding a festive flair. Thank you, Anton. You made it a spectacular experience.

In some ways it delivered -- the Business Class seating is spacious and comfortable, and the free Wi-Fi was excellent and much appreciated. Unfortunately, the café car experience significantly detracted from the trip. The café service was consistently unprofessional, with orders not being acknowledged, requests needing to be repeated multiple times, and items handled abruptly. The café was not busy during these interactions. As the trip progressed, the experience became uncomfortable enough that our family stopped using the café altogether, despite being only halfway through a long journey. We also received dismissive and curt responses when asking simple questions about stops and timing. While the seating and onboard amenities were very good, the customer service was not. Experiences like this point to a need for stronger management oversight and customer service training, and they have unfortunately made me question whether I would choose Amtrak again for a trip of this length.
