They have people make sure you get on and off the right train. However, the text and email notifications are slow on updates. Trains are fairly clean with a free snack station, free sodas and water bottles, water bottle refill station and bathrooms. Seats are comfortable with tables. There were barely anyone on coach on a Thursday evening so I sat at a table watched Netflix. My train car barely had anyone in it and was extremely clean. The restroom on the train was clean and spacious. Better than an airplane restroom. It was delayed on the way to Bakersfield, but not too long. The train was the most packed I have ever seen it. They no longer have a working dining car so a bunch of us sat in this car with the snacks all around us. The snacks are free so once everyone loaded up on the freebies, we were able to get a seat. The senior price from Sacramento to Fresno is only $27. Had a great time on a Saturday round trip from Fresno station to the Colonel Allensworth State Park. I've ridden Amtrak from Fresno to SF, Merced, and Sacramento before-all good experiences. Secure parking and a spacious waiting area, inside and outside of the Fresno station. Friendly service there and during the train ride. The missing star is because of the lack of maintenance and cleaning at the station-seems like there might be a staffing shortage. Hopefully the station can be a more welcoming place to visitors to Fresno in the future. read more

Amtrak: 28 Nov 2021 My 80-plus year-old mother-in-law visited us this past Thanksgiving weekend. She got a ride to our house but had to take the train back to the Bay Area. Mary C (ID #90019338) who took my call was friendly over the phone. When I asked if the location is safe for a 'elderly lone' traveler, she remarked that it's 'pretty save, staffed, with no issue'. Mary was wrong regarding the 'staff'. We did not see any uniformed staff on duty. Perhaps they're in plains clothes to catch any wrong-doings. (4 of 5) We live an hour away and decided to set out earlier in case of traffic. We got to the train station with plenty of time to spare - but, when we got there, an announcement was made. The train is delayed... by two hours. The 3 hours and 13 minutes train ride from Fresno to Martinez - which was supposed to leave at 2:16 PM did not leave until around 4:15 PM. It took a toll on everyone - especially the elderly. My mother-in-law did not get home until way past 8:00 PM. This incident reminded me of our train ride to Reno. It took over 6-hours and the train ran out of food and even water. That was a horrible experience. read more

I live in Los Angeles and frequently take the Amtrak to Modesto, where I still have family. Recent trips have been delayed 2-3 hours each way because of equipment and scheduling malfunctions. But after my last trip on September 29, I will never take Amtrak again! We left Modesto late that morning, then half an hour into the trip south the engine broke down. The crew spent two hours trying to repair it without success. Then they announced that another train going south would arrive and would push us to Bakersfield. It took another hour to get that train connected. During all this time, we were mostly without electricity, so there was no air conditioning and the toilets were locked. This breakdown also meant that other trains on that route were affected. While we were being pushed to Bakersfield, we constantly had to go to a siding and wait long periods for various reasons: (1) so other trains could go by; (2) because the crew said there was trouble on the tracks ahead; and (3) because the automatic rail switching was not working, which meant the crew had to stop the train, get out, and manually switch the tracks. With all these various equipment malfunctions and delays, the four hour journey to Bakersfield turned into a ten hour nightmare. There was nothing to eat on the train except salty snacks and warm soda the whole time. The toilets ran out of toilet paper, were not restocked, and there were no other paper products of any kind available on the train. When we finally arrived in Bakersfield at 6:00 pm, we immediately had to board the bus to Los Angeles, adding another three hours to our trip. This three hundred mile journey from Modesto to Los Angeles took 14 hours to complete, without decent food or beverages provided at any time. Based upon my years of personal experience, the Amtrak transportation system is clearly falling apart. Save yourself a host of terrible travel experiences and find another means of transportation besides Amtrak. read more

I used to travel on Amtrak fairly frequently. I now have a Service Dog and was a bit anxious to travel with her. (I knew she does well on busses, and she's been to the Train Museum and had been on a simulator) I was worried that we would be hassled because I couldn't find anything online about what to do or what to expect. I bought my ticket online and waited at the transportation hub in town for my bus. It was running late, but the app never updated. When it did arrive, we were checked in as usual and not one word was said about my dog. I loved it. My anxiety disintegrated. The drive was uneventful and relaxing. We arrived at the train station in good time. We should have had a 30 min layover but it turned Into an hour and a half because the train was delayed. The app and station stayed updated, but it still stank to be there so long. The train was just as easy for us as the train. No issues at all. The lower level was packed and my anxiety climbed as I saw how crowded it was. We ended up in the dining car. We had a nice chat with one of the conductors and enjoyed the short hop. I'd have given a full 5 stars of they had been more on time. But the rest was a really good experience. People with Service Dogs can relax, this was a really good experience all the way around. read more

Let's hear it for public transportation! We need more in Fresno to make it easier for people to get around the city, but the Amtrak trains provides a good way to make it out of Fresno, and it's cheaper than air flights from FAT. The Amtrak station is in downtown Fresno. There is parking for you to leave your car. There are metered slots if you are meeting someone or dropping off a passenger. It's easy to get in and out of the station. The station is not large, but the service is good and it's easy to travel from here. Going north is much easier than going south. If you want to get to southern California, you will have to change from train to bus in Bakersfield. read more

Agree with much of what Sara and Delaine said in their reviews below. Very convenient location in Downtown Fresno close to the courthouse and the convention center. However at night the lighting is poor, and there are some druggie weirdos hanging around the station, so beware. This is not a reason not to take the train; just be aware of your surroundings and stay where it's well-lit. Limited food options after dark, but there is a 7/11 open 24/7 on Tulare Avenue walking distance from the station. Many of my reviews deal with public transit, but my itinerary yesterday easily got me from Downtown LA to Fresno and back the same day with no problems. It's greatly preferable to driving for all the usual reasons, especially reduced stress and the outrageous price of gas, you just have to map it out ahead of time, and leave time for delays and getting used to the various connections. read more

My 15 yr old son rode the train from Fresno to Stockton on the 23rd of December. The ticket sales staff were helpful and professional. To no fault of their own, the 3:21pm train was sold out. I had to purchase a ticket for the next train. I would have bought the ticket online if it wasn't for the fact that because he was an unaccompanied minor; you cannot purchase the ticket online. Keep in mind that during the holidays, trains might fill up quickly so buy online if you can. A word of advice is to wait inside the station, especially after dusk. There are some scary looking characters pacing in front of the train station entrance and homeless people sitting down by the doors. Keep your belongings close to you and just be aware of your surroundings. Thankfully nothing happened to us while we waited for the train but you just need to be smart. read more

I am really surprised that Fresno Amtrak has such a low rating! However, my experience was really awesome. Since it was my first time taking the train it was confusing on where I should go to check in since Greyhound station and Amtrak are in the same place. Once I found the location I was about third in line then all of a sudden people started to pour in! About 20 people in line behind me now....I got lucky!!! While waiting I had an opportunity to observe the place, the people and the atmosphere. In order to use the bathroom you need your Amtrak ticket to get in or you can't use it. There was a cute small dog running around that got loose from a customer waiting in line and everyone fell in love with it and the kids were playing with it. Finally I am next in line and my helper was really sweet! He checked in my baggage and gave me information on the time and location the train will be and arrive. I went outside and as a Fresno native I am no stranger to the high temp but it was blistering. I would recommend taking the train if you haven't yet! The train ride was amazing and fast! The "Sante Fe" Amtrak station in Fresno seems to work well enough. I have helped my girlfriend board trains here (& greeted her on the return legs) several times. Each journey has commenced (or concluded) in a timely fashion with no hold ups or issues. The station is neither beautiful or welcoming. It could have been painted and renovated in ways that took advantage of its potentially interesting buildings - but it seems that nobody considered doing anything like that. After dark, the station's location leads to the encroachment of homeless, rootless and substance abusing people. Downtown Fresno has an army of vagrants and addicts; the wooden seats make functional beds and the station's archways provide cover and hiding places. During the day and early evening, this issue is less in evidence. This Amtrak station does what it says on the label - without frills, but efficiently. read more

As a grandma of two grandchildren ages 3 and 5, I decided it was much easier to keep them real busy on the days that I get to sit for them. This past Saturday, I decided that a trip to Hanford (my grandson calls it Hamster) on the Amtrak was in order. We arrived in ample time as I knew that I had to check the kids' car seats as a friend was meeting us in Hanford and we would be riding in her car. The baggage check in process was SMOOTH! We first stayed in the station to wait as it was pretty warm outside. The station stays very comfortable as they don't skimp on running the air conditioner. I have noted on various occasions that the grounds and the interior of the station are quite clean, considering the number of people that pass through there every day. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. There were MANY people waiting for that train to Hanford. It seems that Fresnans believe that a day trip to Hanford for ice cream at the Superior Dairy on a Saturday is a great way to entertain the kiddos. We all clamored onto the train and jostled for position. We found ourselves in a car that had a multitude of kids and a few parents/grand parents as well. Pretty soon, one of the adults sitting at the table/booth space on the car pulled out a deck of cards for the game "Go Fish!" My grand kids gravitated toward the group and soon all the kids were circling that table area and the card game was going in full force! It looked like a group of mini people in Vegas circling one of the card tables there! Such fun! After a great time in Hanford, we once again loaded onto the return train to Fresno. The kids by now were a bit subdued - simply wore out from the fun day. Upon arrival in Fresno, we went into the station to claim our car seats. The clerk directed us to one of the roll up doors outside and told us that she would have a gentleman there waiting to deliver the seats to us. There he was, ready and waiting with a welcoming smile. Off we went to our car to head for home. Once I got the car started, and turned onto Tulare Street, by the time I hit the second street light, the kiddos were both sound asleep in their car seats. This is a review of the San Joaquin train system on Amtrak. Just to let you know this station in peticular is a really nice station and the people are always friendly. I have been traveling between SoCal where I live and NorCal where my family is for years now. From my point of view there are only three ways you can do it. You can fly, take the train or drive. Flying is really expensive and so much of a hassle especially if you are not right next to the airport. Driving is what I do most of the time but then you have to worry about your car breaking down in Boon Honkie Hill and things like falling asleep and gas. I started taking the train some years ago and now I do it every chance I get. With the San Joaquin trains there are ones running every few hours from early morning to late at night. The conductors are very helpful and don't give you much grief. It costs me 40 bucks or so to go from Stockton to the Santa Barbara area which is about the price of gas. Two things to remember: Bring your own food and snacks. Yes there is the dining car but a microwaved hot dog is like 6 bucks. Get to the station early so you can check your luggage and stake out a good spot on the platform so you can be one of the first to board and get your pick of seats. If you are traveling alone at the ends of each car are a couple single seats where you can ride in peace and not have to worry about some random Fresnoite talking your ear off about corn. And dont forget to find a seat with a plug and charge your phone so you can pass the time posting reviews on Yelp just like I am right now! read more

This Amtrak station is centrally located and easy to get to/from! As usual in train stations, the surrounding areas are not the best. Can get a little sketchy at night, but you shall be fine. There are not many dinning or shopping options, even inside the building. Stop by a grocery or convenience store beforehand to make sure you have all the supplies you need for the trip. This Amtrak Station occupies the Sante Fe Passenger Depot, which was built in 1899 and has been renovated several times since then, and it is in the National Register of Historical Places. If you want to be economic, it's a good way to travel if you're traveling alone and have the time. I usually travel from Bakersfield to Fresno on the Amtrak train. It's a smooth trip. Plenty of seating and it's comfortable. I usually travel alone and sometimes interesting people sit next to me and we have conversations. A lot of times it is a non-social trip. I like how they have power outlets to charge my phone or computer. I don't generally eat at the snack care because it's pricey for microwavable food, so I usually bring my own snacks and water. Our trip was horrible starting on December 22,21 ending on December 27th 2021 this was the dates that were planned but we didn't get home until the 29th at 1:30 am they lost our luggage they didn't care about my health issues. They disregarded our feelings on everything treated us like trash. When we told them our luggage was missing they said we should have watched it that they were not responsible for it. I was nervous about taking the train from Emeryville to Fresno because I am ALL about research and couldn't find much information on the train I would be riding on or the station. I arrived at the Emeryville station 20 minutes before my train was arriving and was pleasantly surprised by how easy everything was! There is a board inside the station showing the next 3-5 train arrival times. Your train number is on your ticket so just pay attention to the board and the announcements. There is a little cafe in the Emeryville station that sells snacks. Cash only. I rode the San Joaquin train. It was VERY clean and the ride overall was so easy! The food car was located in the middle of the train and I grabbed a bag of chips and a drink there. There isnt a place to lock up your stuff so bring any valuables with you if you're nervous. The conductor comes by once you are on board to check your ticket. There is an overhead bin above your seat to place your belongings that you don't need during your ride. Each seat has lots of leg room and also has a pulldown tray like in an airplane. An announcement comes on at every stop reminding everyone that all seating is open seating upstairs on the train. I was lucky and didn't have to sit next to anyone my entire ride. The announcement also says they have a "strict" one ticket one seat policy which means no bags on the seat next to you but I noticed not many people followed that rule. I love traveling by train. You can sleep, watch your own movie, read, get free wifi although sometimes it's a bit spotty and you can have a cocktail/cold beer! BONUS! Shockingly, the bathrooms are always clean. Thankfully! The food car is okay. Expect to pay $2.50 for a bottle of Crystal Geyser water. I usually load up and bring my own bag of goodies/snacks. I loved Amtrak previously, but I guess Covid has done them in. The routes no longer cover via train substantially, I had to sit in a horrible bus for 3-1/2 hour's instead of the usual one hour, (i've been in their buses previously many times and never has one been this bad, they are usually like a luxury bus this one was SO cramped, old, and VERY uncomfortable). Im disabled in my shoulders, showed proof when ticket guy came around, told him I'd need help, but no help appeared and then they CLOSED THE DOORS before I could muscle my baggage off by myself. I had to shout, thankfully someone heard me before the doors were completely closed, then he made me feel like it was my fault! I understand delays, but my Uber was waiting an extra 15 minutes for me, and I was tired from over night train venture. Don't really have an option other than train plane or car, but come on Amtrak, my career depends on travel and punctual scheduling. Wifi is always a joke on Amtrak I don't know why they even advertise or give you a password, it takes my whole trip for a page to load. Having said that, the trains and station have electrical plugs. Took the train for the first time with my wife and kids and must say overall it was a pretty good experience. The staff at the Fresno location were helpful but not very friendly. The train was clean and well maintained, but it was hard to find a seat for all of us in one section. The staff on the train were professional, but sarcastic at the same time. A little over a year ago I went on a spring break vacation to San Francisco. I know, I'm late. It was my first time being on a train so I was a little nervous since I get motion sickness. First of all, the station was very nice. It has an old but well taken care of feel to it. It was easy to get dropped off and there were plenty of seats for me to wait in. I went early in the morning, about 3 or 4 AM. I must say that there are indeed a lot of weirdos there, but if you just keep to yourself you won't have any trouble. This particular station has a staff that is discriminatory to its elderly and disabled passengers. It would not honor the policy that a medical scooter is not considered luggage. My elderly mother cannot walk very far without this and the staff required that she count this as one of her baggage. Attended the Fresno Convention center, hopped on Amtrak in Modesto, destination Amtrak Fresno. The one way trip was $25.00 dollars and less on my return. The station was a classic, clean restrooms, benches while waiting, and a speaker system that told of the trains arrival. I was able to walk form Amtrak to the convention center via a pedestrian walkway, small shops, restaurants. Arrived feel fresh, no gas or wear and tear on the car. On my return enjoyed talking and meeting UC Merced students, who were using Amtrak to return home for the weekend. read more

This review is for the Amtrak San Joaquins, my newfound favorite way to get to and from Fresno when I visit the 'rents in my love-it-and-hate-it home town. Well, Amtrak is pretty much the same: I love and hate it. If it's on time I love it... comfy seats, smooth ride, a pretty unending supply of beer. If it's not running on time, I pretty much loathe it... stuck for hours in the middle of nowhere with pretty much nothing to look at.
