We recently took an Amtrak journey from Seattle to Chicago on 3/10/26. We were excited for the journey and had flown to Seattle the previous day to assure we wouldn't miss it. We looked forward to our mini vacation and even booked a First Class bedroom on the train. The previous month we had booked an amtrak roomette and enjoyed it so much we decided to do it again this month on a longer route with a bigger room. During that train ride, we had excellent service in first Class ! The attendants were awesome ! They were very friendly, attentive, and happy to see ya ! This recent journey, however, wasn't even on par. Sadly because we had expectations of an awesome experience again but it wasn't even close. I will say though, in everyone else's defense, it was really only 1 person that made the trip so miserable; Jan, the lead attendant in the First Class dining car. She was not happy. Not nice. Talked down to you if you accidentally did something wrong that went against her routine. Just not polite at all. Ever. She had a cutting , condescending demeanor toward not only the passengers but her fellow co worker working underneath her as well. Everything was done like roll call. Very routine and very strict very impersonal. No pleasure in her voice at all whether making announcements or talking to you directly. Not a good experience for us as far as dining goes. Our room attendant, on the other hand, was wonderful, and expressed care for her passengers. She was very attentive and a very sweet personality. In the end, this experience set us back a little bit with Amtrak. First Class rooms are too expensive to endure the treatment we received from her 3 times daily at mealtime. Something which should be pleasurable. I do not wish anyone the misfortune to get her as their dinning car attendant. I'm not sure if and when we will travel with Amtrak again. read more

Ticket buying was easy if you are computer savvy. We won a round trip pair of tickets aboard the heartland flyer. (Part of a Christmas package) (We did an all public transportation experience and walked a bit.) We arrived about 45 mins before departure and got situated after conductor directed us where we needed to go. Lower level reservation is what we had. The chairs were comfy. Bathrooms clean! A couple of them were spacious as well. The space in the lower level car and the plugins were pretty awesome says my daughters. Took a visit to the cafe car when it opened up. Smiles from the staff. Thank you for being awesome On the return trip A Hicks - Train conductor made the girls day/night as we boarded the train some people were seated in lower with upper level seats. We got the logistics ironed out and away we are back to Oklahoma City. The ride was smooth and swift! **Only suggestions I have for Amtrak is better family friendly schedule for return trip. Leaving at 520pm was tough to plan out from the hotel standpoint...but we managed. Girls got a picture with the train driver!!! Mr Darryl did a fantastic job. Had to book my dad a ticket from FTW to Austin and I was waiting for about 25 minutes until someone finally answered. The agent that 1st answered was rude. I told her he was elderly and needed downstairs seating. She emails me the ticket. When I get the ticket his name is misspelled so I have to call back. On hold for about the same and I explain about the name. The agent is nice and makes the changes and I repeat myself that he needs downstairs seating. She confirms. Get to the FTW station and they make us walk far to get on the train away from the train station. Then the train gets here and backs up to where we normally board so we end up walking to the first area we were. We ask a gentleman if this is the correct train and he is so rude with his response. Every person that asked him a question he had a rude tone and response. I can describe him to a tee... Hispanic male, black beard, about 5'6/5'7 in Amtrak uniform and a conductor-like dark blue hat and wore dark shades. Once he scanned us in he, he rudely says... Austin... go to the next car behind me! We just go so we can get my dad a good seat. Once my elderly dad is seated he comes around and says aloud.... If you are not assigned in downstairs seating you don't belong here you need to upstairs and I'm going to check every ticket! So, I ask how do you know if it doesn't say on your ticket? He looks at ours and says you are upstairs. I said well we paid for him to be downstairs because he has a defibrillator and his legs are weak. He just replies he's upstairs. The train was already late and it was about to leave, so we helped my dad upstairs. This was my dad's first train ride back home. What happened to sympathy for others. It wasn't even full downstairs. He could have offered to help and give suggestions of how we could fix his ticket. I hope this gets to Amtrak management. read more

My wife likes riding the trains. When I worked the RR in central Texas, we would take the Amtrak back and forth from FW to OKC where our home was. It's a great ride. Much better than a bus, tho a bit more expensive than Greyhound. Plenty of room to move about if needed. Seats are ok, not the best cushioning. We had USB ports to charge our devices. This particular route from FW to OKC is on a BNSF line, and sometimes the trains get delayed. Leaving OKC in the morning isn't usually an issue, tho leaving FW in the afternoon sometimes is. We've always had a great experience. We did have to stop once for a tornado that rocked the train a little bit, that was fun, other than that, the rides are fairly uneventful and worth the extra cost as opposed to the alternative. read more

We took the Texas Eagle from Chicago to Ft Worth, Texas in September 2024. My wife and I booked the sleeper cabin. It is a room for two with two bunk beds, a chair and toilet and shower. All meals were part of the price. The train left about before 2pm and arrived in Fort Worth the next day at 2pm. The carriage, our room, felt dingee and old. It was in the upper level. Towels were snuck in wall panel gaps to stop rattling. The rooms need a good thorough deep cleaning, the room did not smell clean at all. Boarding was not a good experience. In business class and first class by air, the passengers get priority boarding, less crowded and in separate lines. Not so with Amtrak, hundreds of people are bunched together and had to wait in line to get to the platform. If you're older or with children and with more than 1 luggage it is difficult. Amtrak could take some lessons from the airline on how to check in sleeper ticket holders who pay 3 times or more the normal fares. De boarding from the train in Fort Worth was just terrible. The train did not stop at the canopy but after the canopy and it was raining when we arrived. We had to get off the train and there was no direction as to where to exit the platform, there were no assistance available like carts or porters to help with the luggage. There was no management of the platform for the passengers. The worst part of the trip was the food. It was micro waved over salted over cooked food. It was just terrible and the food servers are not trained. We were not seated at the designated time, the entre in a foil plate was served first followed by a salad. After waiting awhile and I asked for water or a drink because I had to take medications before eating and the server told me to be patient! This was a terrible trip and I will never recommend and try it again. I did travel about 9 years ago on Amtrak from San Francisco to Fort Worth in a sleeper carriage. Used to take the Amtrak to and from Austin back when I didn't own a car. Surprisingly, it only added an additional half-hour to get there. Even now as a car owner, I would take the Amtrak in a heartbeat. There is a food car with snacks and beverages, even beer. There are also fold-down trays on the backs of the chairs for computer use or eating. (Sleeping and reading are also other ways to help pass the time.) I absolutely love Amtrak and wholeheartedly recommend this mode of transportation to anyone. read more

My family of four (2 adults,4 year old, and 18 month old) decided to take the Amtrak to San Antonio for our summer vacation. I was nervous at first because I wasn't sure how much room we'd have in the seats. I was pleasantly surprised at how wide the seats were and how much leg room we had. The kids were able to walk around between our seats. It was very convenient. The restrooms were fairly clean but tight. We sat on the top section and didn't have any problems finding a seat when we got on. Everyone near us were really nice. We walked to the lounge/observation car a few times which was the next one over. We did eat at the Dining Car for dinner on the way to San Antonio and had breakfast in the Dining Car on the way back to Fort Worth. The food was pretty good but expensive. They had snacks & drinks for purchase as well which we utilized. I took plenty of snacks on the way there to keep the kids preoccupied. I really enjoyed Amtrak and will consider it for future travel. It's convenient for the kids. It takes a bit longer because of the stops but it was fine with us since we were not on a tight time schedule. read more

Many tracks are in the sun and without shad, but traveling today in a train headed south a worker drove many of us to the waiting train and helped us climb in our waiting train after checkin. My room attendant even was lovely and personable and brought me water. I am really impressed with Amtrak and look forward to using them again. Definitely upgrade to room or roomette. Texas Eagle! The Amtrak train is slloooooowww. I rode the train in from Oklahoma City on the way to San Antonio, and we stopped (for a long long time) at Fort Worth's train station to hang out for a while. I picked up my cell phone, and looked at the schedule. It's a nine hour ride from Fort Worth to San Antonio. Now, keep in mind that it's a four hour drive, one way. That means I could've had someone from San Antonio drive all the way to Fort Worth, pick me up, drive back, and we'd still beat the train by an hour. Ridiculous. The passenger trains apparently have the lowest priority on the rails, and must pull over and stop whenever another train approaches and needs to use the tracks. It's frustrating to look out the window, and see kids on tricycles and little old ladies in walkers out pacing the train. It was, however, a pleasant ride. We got to go pretty fast through parts of Texas I'd never seen before. The train doesn't exactly follow I-35, it takes a meandering route. The train was comfortable, and had outlets to charge devices and a dining car. The train cars are air conditioned. It's a nice option if you have lots and lots of time on your hands and not much money. Amtrak will let you take a bike on the train for an added surcharge. read more

Horrible - unable to upgrade as they no longer carry a dorm car for employees. Thus, the employees take up rooms on the only sleeper car available leaving scraps for us. I met 3 people unable to upgrade on my journey. I traveled from San Antonio, TX to Chicago and the restroom upkeep is horrendous at best.!!! I've used better conditioned outhouses at state fairs to give an idea. Coming back from Chicago was more of the same, 2 groups wished to upgrade and the bathrooms were even worse. Then, a derailment forced us onto buses from Ft Worth to San Antonio... My vacation was wonderful (Indy 500) but my travels were horrible. NEVER AGAIN Amtrak.!!! read more

Took the train from the Fort Worth station to Oklahoma City. The Fort Worth station is really well kept and conveniently located in downtown Funky Town. Greyhound and the Trinity Railway Express have stops at the station if you need to use public transportation to get to your next destination. There's a Subway sandwich shop inside the station if you want to grab a bite to eat before boarding the train. We booked reserved coach seats on the Amtrak train route headed to Oklahoma City. The seats are comfy and have leg rests that pull up. Electrical outlets are at each seat so you don't have to worry about your lap top or phone pattery running out. There's a snack bar on the first level of the train with candy, chips, sandwiches, snacks, beer, wine, and liquor. read more

I didn't notice this was in my notes, so it's a little late. I'm going to say that this was a fairly typical Amtrak trip. This winter, we took the Texas Eagle from Ft Worth to Pomona, CA. We had older sleepers both ways, and they did need cleaning with Lysol. The food was the same as on the Southwest Chief. That being said, the staff wasn't nearly as nice on this line. The kitchen staff was flat out rude...I went in at one point to ask about our dinner reservation and one guy said, "What?" in a rude tone. Not, "Can I help you?" or "We aren't open yet." "What?" Apparently I interrupted a very important gripe-fest about the way Amtrak treats their employees. The sleeper stewards were also curt. Normally, when you tip someone for their initial help, they at least pretend to be nice. Not our guys. And let me say, we didn't ask them to put down our beds or anything...this was just in passing or as they took meal reservations. Now, the thing that is odd about the Eagle: If you get on before San Antonio, and plan to go west, you will be given the chance to wander about San An in the middle of the night, or stay in the car. They have to take the car OFF the Heartland Flyer (which is the N-S part of the trip) and put it on the Sunset Limited (the E-W part of the trip). This causes the air and electricity to go off for up to an hour, which means no restrooms. Luckily the kids were out and the constant bumping and jarring didn't wake them. But it did wake us. Also, you end up on the end of the train. So when you want to go eat, you walk through 3 passenger cars to get to the observation car, and then through that to get to the dining car. Annoying. Also, being at the end of the train means that you aren't anchored, so the bumps are far more dramatic. At night, they tend to push a little faster if they are late, and I truly felt like we were going to end up off the tracks. I didn't feel like that on any of the other journeys. read more

Texas Eagle This is the way to travel. The trip was smooth, comfortable, relaxing and got us from Fort Worth to Austin in about 4 hours (2:30 p.m-6:30 p.m.). This was my first Amtrak trip and we took the Texas Eagle from Fort Worth to Austin. It was one of the most enjoyable travel experiences I've had. On the way to Austin, my wife paid to upgrade her ticket (for approx. $45) to a roomette sleeper car. This entitled us both to travel in a sleeper suite which had room for 2 to sleep or just relax with plenty of space. It also included 2 dinners (minus alcohol). On the trip back to Fort Worth, she upgraded us to a full sleeper car ($90), which was a larger room with room for 3-4 sit and relax or 2 to sleep. The larger room also included a bathroom with a shower and a sink. The larger room was cool, but for only $45, I'll take the roomette. The train staff on the way to Austin was very friendly and helpful and the on-board meal was delicious (the menu selection is very limited). The staff was a little less friendly and helpful on the way back to Fort Worth, but still not bad at all. I'll take Amtrak as a travel alternative any chance I get. read more

Overall I had a wonderful experience. There was only one MAJOR problem. It's was my first time riding the Amtrak a little over two weeks ago and I was not sure, which train to get on. I went up to this order lady named LYLA and said "I have a quick question," she replied "No!," I said "excuse me?" and she replied with "You said you had a quick question, I have a quick awnser, NO" and then proceeded to walk away. It was extremely rude and did not completely ruin my experience, but it was a big red flag for me. Other than that I had a fantastic experience. read more

Amtrak Train 21 was pretty cool to ride from Ft. Worth to San Antonio on 3/17/16. Called us by name upon boarding. Pleasant employees and the dining experience was wonderful. The staff during the full 9 hour ride were very accommodating and treated us like royalty. Checked on us constantly and were very happy. Amtrak Train 422 from San Antonio to Ft Wirth 3/20/16 however was not a pleasant experience. I needed assistance in our bedroom suite with the beds and no one ever came from the call. At the smoke break stop, I stepped out and sure enough, I found the employee who was suppose to be assisting our room which was "D". I stepped down to let him know the call button was depressed and he said "okay". I asked if he could assist me and he said, "okay". I returned to our room and after his cigarette break the train departed and ten mins later he strolls by. Then I went and asked the dining area representative what time lunch would be served, and she said 6 more minutes and would not let us wait in the car. She was texting on her phone and clearly did not want to be interrupted. We decided it was best to skip lunch and return to our room. It is as tho the passengers are a inconvenience to the employees. Trail passengers are treated like less than important by this 422 train. read more

First time Amtrak experience (from FW to OKC)...Was a bit nervous and unsure...Had 2/two pieces of luggage, attempted to offer the larger 1/one to personnel for placement down below on the train. Was abruptly informed to carry on both (personnel extended no explanation, looked right past, and moved on to the next person and spoke abruptly to them)...Found seats comfortable and the ride somewhat pleasant EXCEPT for the children that were allowed to walk back and forth and back and forth and back and forth from one passenger car to another (personnel offer NO accountability to parents whom allow their children to walk/run freely), therefore on the return trip -found seating at the end of an End Car- thereby eliminating heavy traffic flow with accompanying noise...Did find the café cart personnel very friendly and personable...Don't envision taking Amtrak again, tho (am glad had the experience, just to say tried it). read more

Nice, convenient, and safe station. The station is really busy with Greyhound, TRE, city busses, and Amtrak all being served. There are always lots of folks milling around, but my family has never had a problem so don't hesitate to visit. There is long term parking available across the street. The electronic parking meters allow you to select multiple days for about $5 per day. Amtrak staff members are always helpful and there are usually volunteers track-side to help you get onto the correct train. The train is great fun for kids of all ages! read more

The worst experience I have ever had was on an over night trip to Ft. Worth, TX on an Amtrak train. I will NEVER ride an Amtrak train ever again. We waited an hour 10 minutes from the station for 2 trains to get out of the way. The guys who helped us on were not friendly. When trying to get home the next day, we waited an hour on the train to leave, then were told we would not be leaving because of a derailment in Ardmore, OK which I have yet to see on the local news. We waited till 9pm for a bus to take us home. 4 hours in the train station on a hard wooden bench with screaming brats everywhere. I have traveled the entire western US and have never before experienced such a horrible trip. Also, never take a cab in Ft. Worth...they are horrible! They don't even open the door for you! read more
