2 stars, because we arrived...eventually. There is no comfort. The seats are hard and divoted from years of bootys. There is no airflow, so your neighbors tuna sandwich is there for all of you to enjoy. If you're super lucky, you'll have the extra conductors sit right behind you with their walkie talkies on high chirping every 30 seconds. Then there's the endless delays; 45 minutes one way, an hour and 25 minutes on the way back. This is true budget travel, so do not go Amtrak if you value your time or your comfort. read more

New Amtrak terminal in East Lansing is a vast improvement over the old one. Parking areas are still under construction but Amtrak kindly arranged close parking for riders at MSU. The question I have is who approved the use of the so called benches for seating? The benches are angled down so you can NOT sit comfortably no matter you do. Perhaps they were installed upside down but in any case the floor is much more comfortable to sit on while we wait for the train which usually is late 50% of the time read more

Amtrak is unfortunately the least reliable mode of transportation on the planet. I've taken the train several times from Chicago to Detroit and have yet for the train to be on time within 60 min of original arrival. It is never on time. Always an excuse. Elongated stops. Freight train delays. Doesn't matter which train you choose it is delayed. Sad really. Don't make a 6hr train ride an 8hr train ride. We'll there is few times in life that you believe that you are screwed up by the irresponsible companies. Amtrak is definitely one of them. FYI I will never use this transportation again, and I recommend everyone who is reading this avoid Amtrak all the time. Last Thursday my girlfriend and I left from East Lansing to catch up a flight from O'Hare Airport, Chicago at 3:15 pm central time. The train was scheduled to arrive at 10:55 and delayed for 3 HOURS! And of course we did not made it to catch up with that flight. Here is what has happened that day: 1. Passengers were informed that the train is delayed for 30 minutes when I got on the train. I thought well that is OK, I still have time. 2. When we were near leaving Michigan, we were informed that the train is delayed for 1 hour for some train railroad system issue. 3. When we were in Indiana, I think it was michigan city, (between michigan and Illinois), we were informed that one of their sister train lost signore or power, or our train lost power or signore so they have to attach the two trains or some kind. 4. About 30 mins near Chicago, train stopped to wait for the sister train. And power went out, some place of the train got really warm. 5. I tried to call their customer service number and tell those guys my girlfriend's flight is running out of time and was informed that I can only deal with those guys after we got off the train. 6. What more ridiculous is that when you call the Amtrak to talk about the train delay issues, you have to talk to the customer relation department. And you cannot contact them directly. All their calls go to the sales operated first and then you tell them you want to talk to the customer relationship department and you got another 10 to 15 mins to wait. ( I guess their train get delayed very often according to their wait time ). So the whole waiting time is approximately 20 minutes. 7. When we finally made it to chicago, it was already 2 pm. It is impossible to catch up the flight on time. And Amtrak won't give a thing if you cannot catch up with your flight because of their delay. And you cannot get any compensation from them. It cost 800 bucks to reschedule the flight (it was international). Their customer relationship operator refuse to give and compensation. 9. I googled Amtrak delayed and found a lot of cases. I guess that is why their customer relation department is so busy. BTW, don't bother to talk their customer service, all they can say is "sorry", what they actually means is that "so what". 10. Other thoughts: When I buy a ticket, I expect the company promise two things to the customers: 1. Get customers from A to B. 2. Make it on time. A ticket should be like a contract, and these two things are what Amtrak paid to do. If they failed any of those, it should means that they failed to conduct their responsibilities. And they should be charged for that. That is the lesson that I learnt. read more

Very very clean station. Plenty of seats. Clean restrooms. Ladies that worked outside helping people were very helpful and friendly. They reminded everyone to have a mask on and if you don't have one they would give you one. Kids played with chalk on sidewalks to keep busy. read more

I have taken the Amtrak from East Lansing to Chicago at least 15 times .About 1/2 of the time it is late . I would not take it if I had a job interview or business meeting . My travel has always been for vacation or to meet up with friends . The Amtrak system is broken but appears to be getting better . Cleaner trains and more tracks for high speed status appear to be here . I think sometimes their staff forgets the customer pays their salary . Other riders I talk to are fed up with slow trains, poor air cond, unclean restrooms and wonder why Amtrak on the east coast is so much better . I for one want to keep Amtrak service as the fares are not bad . Who wants to drive to Chicago in heavy traffic and pay their steep parking fees ?? Not Me I will ride the rails . read more

Took the train to Chicago on a snowy Saturday morning. Got a great AAA rate of $24. The ride was on time-no worries with the snow. They had a nice snack car. Ok 4.5 hours is a bit boring and slow. But you can't beat it. RECOMMENDED read more

I've been using this Amtrak station since 1979. It was fine the way it was. Small, but you could park for free and go anywhere for any amount of time and your car would be there .... no cost. NOW, they have this new building with the seats that angle down -- as someone else already said, you can't be comfortable on them no matter how hard you try. Cold in winter and hot in summer and angled so you slip off. GIVE ME THE OLD STATION BACK AND THE FREE PARKING. Sometimes "improvements" are not improvements. How is it we want to encourage people to take mass transit and not waste gasoline and yet the price of your ticket can DOUBLE when you pay for daily parking? This is counterproductive nonsense. Bring back the free parking! Save the ozone, global warming all that. Who approved this? East Lansing? Give 'em hell. read more

Train station by Quality Dairy on Trowbridge services Amtrak and megabus customers. There's a small indoor waiting area with restrooms and benches outside. Beware, they have very limited parking spaces so it's easier to get dropped off here than to find parking! read more

The new station building is way nicer than the old building. The only downside to the improved area is that the local mass transit has taken the lots and charges $10 a day when it was free to park at the station before they built the new one. Kind of bull crap but what can you do... read more
