Long term parking at 6:15am on a Wednesday. (First train is at 7:15am)
    Chris N.

This is my second time taking the Amtrak from Ann Arbor to Chicago and I wanted to share what the long term parking lot looks like 1 hr prior to departure (6:15am for a 7:15am train) on a Wednesday. As you can see, there were plenty of open spots. I'm always paranoid that there won't be enough spots at this location based on other reviews, but again today, there were plenty of spots. I think it just depends on how many people are parking a car. Ann Arbor gets a lot of students that walk, take the bus, or get dropped off by an Uber.

While my experience taking the train to Chicago was "OK" it started out on a really bad note and ended on a bad note. The ride itself has delays too, but this review is about the station itself. That bad note is the Amtrak station in Ann Arbor. They should be ashamed of themselves because this is not handicap accessible, not luggage accessible, and it's poorly designed. When I parked my car and went to head to the station I realize that there was a huge huge staircase ahead of me. I was heading to the Chicago Marathon. I am physically fit. But... I had a suitcase with a lot of stuff in it. It took all my energy and strength to try and hike my suitcase up over each of the stairs. It was dangerous and risky. But there is no option. There are no porters, and there is no ramp. Granted I figured out a way to get it done but what would I have done in another situation... Well I will tell you. Fast forward past the weekend where I completed the Chicago Marathon. I was very sore the next day as you can probably imagine from running 26.2 miles. Additionally my knee was flaring up a bit. And, guess what... I still have the same suitcase to get back to my car, Up a ginormous flight of stairs and then down a ginormous flight of stairs. Not a small flight like you see in a house, a huge huge staircase. You can see the picture of it in this review. This is not even funny. It was a cruel cruel joke. I actually had to call a friend who lives in Ann Arbor, have her come to the train depot, put my luggage in her car, and drive me across to the parking lot. The dilemma is there a train tracks in the way and you cannot cross those. Ann Arbor... Amtrak... Get with the program and put some ramps in. This is not OK!

List of Chicago recommendations from Terry Smith - Amtrak Conductor.

My first ride on an Amtrak. Visited a friend in Michigan and decided to take the Amtrak to Chicago. I was a little bit hesitant but the train was clean and the staff were courteous and friendly. Terry Smith, a conductor, chatted with our group. We expressed that we didn't really have plans for Chicago. He said he would write down some recommendations. When he returned, we had a list of sports bars, restaurants, and shopping places. He had something unique to say about each one and provided us with traveler tips to get the most out of our trip. This was the highlight of the ride. Bathrooms are located in each cart. The food cart is at the very back of the train. The train goes 110mph after the Kalamazoo stop. The train was late about 10 minutes but the train station kept us well informed.

I travel to Michigan between…read moreChicago several times a month and know every nook and cranny of what each transportation service offers. I'll offer a brief summary of the pros and cons. PROs: - Megabus is EXTREMELY punctual. It is BY FAR the most punctual method of transportation between CHI and AA. I have never had my bus be delayed by more than a few minutes (compare this to Amtrak, which averages ~50 min delay every single time I take it. Greyhound, on the other hand, is a whole other animal... if your bus actually shows up, the timeliness is in between that of Amtrak and Megabus.) - Ronny, the most incredible bus driver you will ever meet, works for Megabus and is truly a phenomenal asset to this company. Trust me when I say you'll know who he is if you ever have him as a driver. I've never met someone who loves their job as much as he does! - You get a rest stop at Love's-- a gas station that, I am convinced, survives purely off of the business that Megabus provides them. Bathrooms are clean and they have many snack options. No complaints! --- CONs: - Space is cramped (it's a bus after all!), so if you're taller than 5'7", you'll likely be a bit uncomfortable. In comparison, Amtrak seats are significantly roomier and Greyhound usually sells fewer tickets (for their own reasons...) so you have a higher chance of having an empty seat next to you. - Bus drivers are not consistent with checking who reserved their seat. I've had multiple instances of other people sitting in my reserved spot, but did not want to make a scene asking them to move. - There was that one really angry bus driver lady (you all know who she is!!!!) who threatened to leave you on the side of the road if she heard your cell phone beep. That was fun. Good thing she changed her haircut and pretends to be a different person now because so many customers complained about her lack of professionalism. --- MAJOR TIP for anyone who has LOST LUGGAGE ON MEGABUS: Always, always, always contact the company that Megabus rents their physical busses from (Lake Front Lines for Ann Arbor). When we accidentally left an item on the bus, Megabus failed to contact the driver and the customer service representatives told us there was nothing we could do except wait for them to return our calls. It was miserable. But within 15 minutes of speaking to a 24-hour Lake Front Lines emergency dispatcher, I was in contact with our bus driver and drove to a nearby hotel to pick up the items. SUCH A RELIEF.

I could just say ditto on Roshan's review…read more Time was when you could get a ticket on this thing for a song. Then I could put up with the crappiness that is a MegaBus experience. Last time I checked though it was a mere 10-20 bucks more for the train for the dates I was travelling. Hmmm. Do your research, if its not an absolutely amazing deal then skip it. Because yes, you wait around like a bum in the elements for an endless amount of time before the trip ever starts, you are then put into uncomfy seating on a bus that is packed to the gills, there is no real service, things are never on schedule and ultimately there will be some miserable moments. Unless you are extremely flexible about travel and willing to be a bit less than satisfied overall, MegaBus may not be a bargain you are willing to suffer. If you are cheap, skinny, short and prepared for any and all issues it can work I guess. Me I am just too freaking old and fat to deal with the hassle. Plus my ride where the air never seemed to work and I arrived at my destination looking and feeling like I had survived an unprepared trek through the Sahara kinda put me off the idea for good.

When I arrived, I didn't take the tram and headed toward baggage claim and it seemed like forever until I got to the center where the exit is. Flying out, I was more smarter after sitting in Vino Volo for a bit, the tram was close by and I made it to Gate 72 within a few minutes with a lot less walking. Definitely a good idea after wining it up. Pay attention as there are only 3 stops so look at the signs to see where you're going next in order to avoid the surprise of a long walk (or run if you're in a hurry to make a connection). Thankfully, the designers of the DTW airport included this Tram. This Tram gets a Stamp of approval... a Tram Stamp!

As I'm a loyal Delta flier, I've connected here in Detroit over 70 times since 2007. Sometimes, the arrival gate is near the departure gate. Sometimes, it is not. When CLT-DTW arrives at A4 and DTW-DEN departs at A74, you've got two choices: walk or ride. The walk will take about 10 or 12 minutes from end to end (if you use the slidewalks and they're not blocked by idiots). Or you can take the tram between the South Station, the Terminal Station and the North Station. The Express Tram was the first tram to run *inside* the terminal. Most other airports that have a tram operate underneath or outside. This one is entirely inside the terminal and not in a tunnel! Also, it's basically a horizonal elevator. The trams are pulled by cables and they ride on an air cushion like hovercraft! [Review 19016 overall - 378 in Michigan - 2540 of 2022.]
