Loved taking the train to Dearborn. It was super easy to buy tickets and hand the tickets to the conductor when the train arrives. Bathrooms were available on the train. My only suggestion is not to get there too early. It only takes a few minutes to get access the tracks to the boarding area. read more

Pretty good place to catch a train. Ample (and free) parking and there's a waiting area inside, though I don't think it was heated. There are also some vending machines and I believe a bathroom. The setup is a little weird - you have to take the elevator or stairs up, cross above the tracks, them take the elevator or stairs back down to get to where you board the train. I'm taking the train to Chicago as I write this and surprisingly it was on time. Nice alternative to driving. read more

The Troy Transit Center was not what I expected. When I arrived for my Amtrak train, I was the only passenger there at 5:30am. There were, however, several homeless people in the waiting room. I understand their reason for being there - it's cold outside! - but it was quite unnerving for me being alone. So, I took the elevator and waited up on the skywalk that takes you to the side of the center with where you catch the train. For some reason, I thought this location was staffed but it was not and there was no security. About 10 minutes after I got there, several other women started trickling in and after they came over to the platform area, they shared that their reaction was the same. One lady's dad was so worried for her that he came in with her and I dont blame him - had my dad dropped me off he would have done the same. Although it is the ideal location for my home and for parking, I will not return. The two prior times that I took Amtrak, I was dropped off at the Detroit station and that is what I will do if I ever ride Amtrak out of southeastern Michigan again. At least that station is staffed and there is security. read more

This train station has plenty of parking for short or long term. No parking fee or advance arrangements need to be made (you do need to make advance arrangements in Royal Oak). The train station is new and there is an elevator that takes you upstairs to a ramp where you walk across the tracks then take the elevator down on the other side. Then you walk over to something that looks like a bus stop and catch the train there. It's very convenient. read more

The Troy Multi-Modal Transit Center is the new Amtrak rail station in Troy, Michigan. It has replaced a simple sheltered stop which was a short distance up the rail line in the neighboring city of Birmingham, Michigan. Though the location is a considerable distance from any city centre, it is right next to Midtown Square, a large shopping area, which includes stores such as Target, Dunham Sports, Kohl's, Kroger, Old Navy, Petco, Famous Footwear, Michael's, and Home Depot, among others. From the Troy Transit Center, trains are somewhat infrequent (6 per day) and there is only one line. Trains running westbound toward Chicago (3 per day) depart in the early morning, midday, and late afternoon. These first travel south to stops in Royal Oak and Detroit before turning west, stopping in Dearborn, Ann Arbor, and Kalamazoo, among others on the way toward the final destination, Chicago. The 3 daily trains running in the other direction (arriving from Chicago, Ann Arbor, Detroit, etc.) go only another few kilometers to the end of the line at Pontiac, Michigan. The trains I have ridden have been comfortable and not at all crowded. The conductors have been polite and helpful. read more

Took the train from Troy to Chicago. There was plentiful parking to leave your car, if needed. There is an enclosed sitting area near the elevator and a few vending machines within the area near the elevator to take up to the platform. The train arrived promptly and the conductor was welcoming and friendly. Had a good experience with Troy Transit Center as well as with Amtrak. The train ride was very pleasant. Plenty of leg room. There was room to store your luggage above your head as well as a large area for bags at the front of our car on the left for larger bags, where it seemed like a lot of people were storing their bags. The wifi was initially very good but became spotty, especially with videos as the trip ensued. Troy seemed to be the first pick up to Chicago so we had first pick for our seat. They then stopped in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Kalamazoo to pick up passengers. The bathrooms were clean and nice on our train. They also had a dining car, with a full dining area and offered soda, water, beer, and liquor as well as pizza and hot dogs. They typically offer sandwiches but there was a recall on romaine lettuce so no sandwiches were available on our ride. Overall, had a great experience with Troy Transit Center and Amtrak. Affordable, comfortable, and easier than driving. I would definitely use Amtrak again for the next time I visit Chicago. read more
