I like Welcome Centers.  I like them a lot.  Whenever I pass a state line and one is near by I head…read moreright for it.                 I do not recommend this Welcome Center.  It has all the basics - there is a public restroom on the first floor and there are piles and piles of magazines featuring wonderful things that you can do in Michigan - all of which, except for a handful, appear to be very far away from this particular welcome center.                 It is located very near to the on ramp of Interstate 75 - so, if you are already in Michigan it is very easy to get to.  If you have just come in, however, you would need to drive past it for some distance, take an exit and navigate through some dodgy neighborhoods to get back to it.  If you are heading into Canada then it's a little more difficult to get to - but not much, just a little more difficult than it normally is.                 This particular Welcome Center is located in 'Mexicantown' - so, let's say you're coming from Canada and heading into the United States to enjoy your stay in Michigan - the first place you get to is 'Mexicantown'.  I don't get it but maybe there's a backstory I missed somewhere.                 The building itself isn't just a Welcome Center.  It's got other commercial ventures in it.  There is a Michigan Secretary of State so if you are heading into the United States you can stop by and get your Michigan Driver's License in Mexicantown to save time - however, if your intent is to save time that's not going to happen in that SOC Office.  It's nice to dream though.                 On the second floor of the building are offices for the Mexicantown Development Corporation or some thing like that.  The offices run most of the building.  Inside, at least right now, you would find one banner announcing that you had arrived at the Mexicantown Development Corporation and a sign that says the public bathroom is downstairs.   That's it.

The terminal is always clean, there are options for eating and drinking and also travel shops for purchases pre or post flight. The terminal is way long so they have a tram that will take you from one end to the other. A nice feature if you have a disability, small children, or are just lazy and don't like to walk. I walk, get those steps and stay fit. Flying home tonight on a Delta flight back to vegas. It's a little stormy, so it should be a bumpy ride. Think space mountain at Disney for about the same cost, but a way longer ride.

The Rosa Parks Transit Center in downtown Detroit is the best transit center I have seen anywhere…read morein the country - this includes New York, Chicago, Richmond and other small locations.  It is a little bit 'hard used' but overall the location is well run and efficient.  You can get just about anywhere throughout Wayne County by using this hub.  The busses move in and out on time.  They are kept in good operating order and clean.  They are roomy and many of them are ecologically sound.  The building itself is very interesting.  It has modern lines but at the same time seems to have been here for a long, long time.  The windows are attractive from the outside and the steel and glass combination is classic 'Big City'. From within the building the windows provide a pleasant light throughout the place.  The interior of the building is kept neat and clean.  There are places to eat nearby.  There is work close by.  There are reasonably priced and elegant apartments nearby.  The design of the building area includes what appears to be sails coming up which cover the outside waiting area.  They are picturesque when viewed from far away and a technical marvel when viewed up close. For $1.50 a ride the Rosa Parks Transit Center is a great point to jump into adventure!

It's relatively flat so even with a shorter runway, the approach isn't too difficult in a light piston. iKea is only a few miles away, although Uber and Lyfts can be tough to find in the area. The best part about this airport is the community feel. It can take you back to the golden age of general aviation in the US. People coming in who are interested in learning how to fly and everyone is really friendly. An older man gave us a ride nearby since we couldn't find a car. Really cool little spot and I'm glad it is there for the community. Pilots - keep kind and no right turnouts for noise abatement!

Holy Crap! What a life saver! DTW (Detroit) might be one of the longest airport terminals I've…read morebeen in. It's about 1 mile from end-to-end (yeah, google it). When I arrived, I didn't take the tram and headed toward baggage claim and it seemed like forever until I got to the center where the exit is. Flying out, I was more smarter after sitting in Vino Volo for a bit, the tram was close by and I made it to Gate 72 within a few minutes with a lot less walking. Definitely a good idea after wining it up. Pay attention as there are only 3 stops so look at the signs to see where you're going next in order to avoid the surprise of a long walk (or run if you're in a hurry to make a connection). Thankfully, the designers of the DTW airport included this Tram. This Tram gets a Stamp of approval... a Tram Stamp!

As I'm a loyal Delta flier, I've connected here in Detroit over 70 times since 2007. Sometimes, the arrival gate is near the departure gate. Sometimes, it is not. When CLT-DTW arrives at A4 and DTW-DEN departs at A74, you've got two choices: walk or ride. The walk will take about 10 or 12 minutes from end to end (if you use the slidewalks and they're not blocked by idiots). Or you can take the tram between the South Station, the Terminal Station and the North Station. The Express Tram was the first tram to run *inside* the terminal. Most other airports that have a tram operate underneath or outside. This one is entirely inside the terminal and not in a tunnel! Also, it's basically a horizonal elevator.
