Power-tripping attendant Amanda ruined the experience. Otherwise the trip was quite enjoyable.

I save my serious bagging for Greyhound, which I can do a twenty minute stand up about…read more Amtrak is still a mess, but I can happily report the inner state carrier that suppliments Amtrak makes getting from, say, PDX to Salem is pretty doggone swell. $25, which includes my backpack and Clarice the Wonder Bike one way..well, gosh, that's gas money. FYI, I paid $5 to take my bike. If you *must* travel with your pets, add $25/per beastie. We have not reached perfection, which I assume, dear reader you would expect, but it's getting there. The bus that I took down, must have been luxurious thirty years ago, though it should be sold and shipped to Bangladesh. As I head home, our ride is more like the fancypants busses one might take to the casinos . As for the station itself, both money and care have been taken in the restoration. Salem is semi-bike-freindly and the station is a quick walk or ride into Salem's cool old town as well as the capital. The governor was not in--I had hoped to give her a piece of my mind and stiff her for the price of lunch. I look at travel like this as a fun adventure. If you are looking for a Virgin Airlines experience, you will be badly disappointed. Another big sell to me traveling by ground is there really isn't any pesky security to go through. I suppose buses and trains are considered small potatoes to Evil. If you look at this with your Greyhound/Amtrak glasses on, I think you will be happily suprised.

GETTING HERE: This…read moreis the Amtrak Eugene station, located at 433 Willamette Street in Eugene. MOOD: On the road (train) again..... REVIEW: It would be helpful if Yelp were consistent on its business pages, and it might be helpful for other Yelpers. This isn't the page to review for Amtrak.com. It's literally for the Eugene, Oregon station. Was on a road (train) trip on the Coast Starlight, and Eugene is one of the very quick stops heading north to Seattle. I ran off the train to see if there was a gift shop or a place to get a soda, etc. There wasn't, but that's OK. Inside, the station was clean and quiet. I didn't see a staff member, but as we only had 3-5 minutes, I didn't have time to even look. But I was happy to see such a neat, historical depot, if only for a couple of minutes. The Amtrak.com website has the following data for this station (good to know for next visit!): Staffed station ATM not available No elevator Payphones Amtrak ticketing kiosks available Restrooms Ticket sales office Unaccompanied child travel allowed Vending machines No WiFi Arrive at least 45 minutes prior to departure if you're checking baggage or need ticketing/passenger assistance How long before departure to be at the station if you need ticketing, baggage or passenger assistance services. Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to departure if you're not checking baggage or don't need assistance. Thanks, Amtrak Eugene. Can't wait to be back! Soon!

Our 2nd Amtrak trip, this time to Chicago…read more It's hard to believe, that the same menu, in another trip, was totally exactly like the first trip, 2 years later. We've taste everything there is! The customer service, to Chicago, was outstanding, very attentive, hard working. Manny, I think was his name. There was no hot meal, for our dinner. Instead we got: a cold salad to-go container, not to be expected, for the price of our room. It was a long wait in line. On the way back, it was poor. He didn't do anything for us, no information, unless he asked. On the way back, it was hard to hear announcements, they were never repeated. The toilet was hard to flush! I would flush it 2-3 times, then I open the door to leave, THEN it flushes.

Inside the station, the interior was stunning, with artifacts on the high ceiling, marble walls and lots of space for passengers to sit. There was a small cafe and gift shop in the station. We had couple of luggages that the staff carried from the train to the baggage pick up. We had them handed over to us within five minutes. Once we stepped outside, the historical building looked old and had signs of aging. It also had a huge clock tower The waiting area was also little shady. But we debarked and left the station without any issues.

This was my first ride on the WES train. Pretty impressive overall. They really should run it all…read morethe way to Salem but that's another conversation. The older I get the less I want to drive especially after dark during these cold, wet months. I grew up in Boston where using public transportation is the norm. Trimet used to be absolutely terrible and in many ways they are still not all that great. Two snowflakes sends the entire system into chaos. It's common to be on a bus and get kicked off to another bus for no apparent reason. And the bus you are waiting for will show up and immediately change signs for some other route. In most cities, this NEVER happens. You stand at an intersection easy walking distance from your home and in ten minutes or less a bus comes along. The bus takes you to a subway stop or a bus terminal where you can transfer to your final destination. Routes are laid out in a logical order and you don't have to study a map to figure out what bus to take to get where you're going. Trimet routes appear to be laid out by lunatics who were way too free with drug use. Getting back to WES and the Tigard TC. Nice terminal. It's open air so not that pleasant if it's really cold out. But at least it's a shelter. The WES train is pretty noisy but comfortable and FAST! Under 15 minutes to get to my destination. Would have taken over an hour going by bus. WES runs fairly frequently. I wish it didn't stop running to Beaverton so early but it is what it is. Ridership isn't that great so that route is probably a money loser. I'm happy that Trimet is finally upping their game. There's still the obligatory mentally ill rider on every bus and train so they have more work to do there. And there was some aggressive antifa type swinging around numchuks in a threatening manner at the Sunset TC so your personal safety is still a serious concern. But I'm seeing more security and fare inspectors so at least Trimet is trying.

The good, it's nice out of the rain. Bad, drivers advise you if smoking when you don't smoke.read more
