Amtrak Union Station in Portland, OR
    Cris J.

It's Portland, so you'll always encounter some level of weird no matter what. However, it's a cute station, relatively clean, & actually bustling & lived in, not just functional. It has a decent gift shop/cafe & overall the ppl & staff are alright. Amtrak is Amtrak, so there's always room for improvement there.

I had been completing before my trip on whether I should take a flight from Portland to Seattle. I researched the pricing between the plane vs train. Train was the cheapest option. I still wasn't sold and the last time I navigated a train was when I was young. I traveled with my mum and sister to NOLA. I needed motivation as a solo traveler, so I looked at YouTube videos to assist in my decision making. I was ready. I booked regular class. My last day in Portland I arrived by Uber. The exterior of the station was rust color and looked antiqued, but the inside amazed me! It reminded me so much of Drury Plaza in San Antonio, TX. I was in awe at the historic charm and character of the establishment. Even included the wooden church pews. The ticket employee wasn't very nice though, she was actually the only person I met in Portland who wasn't friendly. She did answer my questions, when I needed more answers to how things worked. I spoke with the baggage guy, he was friendly and gave a smile. Once on the train, there was no assigned seating. It was much more roamy than an airplane and the seats felt plusher than Southwest Airlines chairs. Also, there was a charging port readily available next to the seats. I realized as soon as I sat down that the right side didn't have as interesting views as the left. Since I heard a roar of, "aww cool" as we left Portland into Washington. The right side got me, suburbia and farmland. I had a massive headache and didn't move about the train as it was in motion. Next time, I'll check out dining hall. I know if you're going longer distances, they have cabins where you can sleep. The ride was smooth as we picked up several other passengers along the way.

Getting off the Coast Starlight here was easy. I was exhausted after the 30 hour train ride in from LA. I mostly was in and out of the Portland Union Station. Asked for directions to a bus stop that I can get on to go to my hotel. I got lost along the way and walked into a population of the unhoused, but I met the sweetest bus driver who helped me out as I explained to her that I was solo traveling for my birthday. The train station is a beautiful brick building, similar to Sacramento. Going back home was pretty easy as well. You just line up right in the station and hop aboard the train. The signage is easy to navigate.

Quick pit stop only, but quite nice inside and the surrounding areas. Nice staff and actually pretty on-time.

This was so much fun. We haven't rode the train in over 20 years. The train process was smooth. The train itself was wonderful. I recommend you purchase business class fair because it is a smoother ride more comfortable area and you get priority boarding.

A major stop for the Amtrak Coast Starlight Train, Amtrak - Union Station Portland provides all the major services of a 'Union' Train station, including a large waiting area, baggage pickup, and even a Metropolitan Lounge. We stopped in the afternoon of our second day of our West Coast train trip from Los Angeles to Seattle. It had a lot of people coming on or off, so it was a 25 minute stop. This gave me the opportunity to step off the train and enter the main building itself to have a look around. Getting out of the building required being checked to make sure you had a ticket (so need to bring your phone with you). Because there were multiple trains there, really appreciated the bright yellow step ladder that my attendant had put out in front of our car, to find my way back. Security here was definitely tighter than at any other stop along our way.

I love Amtrak and I love riding the train! Union Station in Portland is a little chaotic, so although we did get there 30 minutes before our train left, I wouldn't cut it any shorter than that. Otherwise, it's a beautiful building and everyone's very friendly and helpful. It's also in a great location and easy to take the max from there.

The 7:25 pm train to Seattle is 1.5 hr Late. Our train broke down, so we had to wait for another N. Bound train to arrive. It seems this happens often. Last 4th of July weekend, my train back to Seattle was half hr late. Then it broke down in Tacoma. So we waited an additional 1 hr. I still prefer to take the train than the cramped bus. The snack bar store is not open Sunday evenings so you have to get Take out or eat before getting to the station. On the Train, their Snack Bar ran out of sandwiches and could only offer Cup of Noodles after a certain time. Then they closed up and offered only cups of ice since it was late. The Train conductor did make announcement before each stop and that that they won't be staying long. So he wanted People to be by the Exits and ready to get off, since they were running late.

    Ask the Community - Amtrak

Can I speak with someone about my Amtrak reservation?

Is their a new stand or some place within the station to buy magazines, books, newspapers?

Yes, some Amtrak stations have newsstands and small shops, and calling 1-877-336-4056 can help you confirm availability at your station.

Does Union Station have outdoor designated smoking area ? I have a 4 hour stopover .

You have to walk out the front door which is a short distance from the waiting area

Alrighty then! Stand up straight, lift your head and look around (just like your mom has always told you; in this particular instance, your mom is right, otherwise you might get hit by a train --OUCH). You can jet over for a spot of tea at Starbucks in City Target or even pick up items for lunch. Scoping the Brooks Brothers' window will show you how to be sartorially splendid in Portland. Now keep turning until you've turned your back on Brooks Brothers and are now visually exploring the Boys Fort window (along with an in-house florist). You'll be able to pick up some beautiful handcrafted items for yourself or as gifts for friends or family. You will need to walk a few feet to Petersons on Morrison and pick up snacks, drinks, or cigarettes to keep you going on the MAX train westbound. The final stop on our tour is a swimsuit (and lots of other swim items) shop where you can suit up and swim out. See what I mean? You need never be bored again while standing at this stop. Yay!! My work is done!
