Inside the Salem Depot on Christmas Day -- these guys drew the short straws
Lynn W.

Big, open, uncrowded -- big parking lot right next to the building! Lots of great things about this Amtrak station. And a beautiful piece of property. The people running the desk and station area were friendly and helpful in every possible way. Can I just suggest an awning or covered area outside? Just a tin roof or something.... As we waited for the Pacific Coast Starlight to take us to L.A. -- the icy rain (which started as a light drizzle) overtook us. By the time we waited for passengers to de-train (lol) and for the conductors to figure out which cars had seats still available -- we were soaked! And so was our luggage. (!) The train was sold out, and it was a crowd of wet rats that finally made it into that train. The guy waiting in front of us, hand-carrying his Stratocaster to a gig in Martinez CA, got the worst of it People were holding their coats over him to keep the guitar dry. Gimme shelter, Amtrak!

Nice sunny day!!!

I don't want to rehash the whole story, but the lady behind the counter today at noon was unnecessarily rude.

The 505 south has been on time once in the last two years. Monthly pass rider since 2016.

I want candy. But not at 2 dollars a bar. Not sure what train I was on but bathrooms need to be larger and need soap.

I wish there was a way to give no stars. Amtrak put my wife and I in a "luxury"car for a 27 hr trip that they knew the toilets didn't work.

We took this ride several times when the kids were little and just rediscovered it yesterday when they had an Open House since I'm always looking for free activities in our area. Normally the route goes from downtown Lake O to Bancroft Street in the S. Waterfront area of Portland and costs around $10/round trip for adults and less for kids. It is a 40 minute trip each way with a break on either end to allow you to stroll, shop or get a bite to eat. The trolley itself is a 1932 streetcar that was originally used on the Portland Broadway line, but restored and operated by volunteers of the Oregon Electric Railway Historical group. For the Open House the volunteers were out in full force, all dressed up, since the entire group uses the day to get re-certified for operations. Lots of nice folks sharing their passion for rail travel and local history. The trip itself gives you a great view of some amazing mansions, and little cottages, along the Willamette River. You'll go through a long tunnel, over bridges and see how the other half lives. I actually saw a seaplane parked in one garage. This isn't the most thrilling ride, but if your kids are in a train phase it is a good activity for them. Since this is run by volunteers on a tight budget there aren't any fancy touches and the gift shop, etc. is bare bones. The trolley is operated seasonally (May-Oct), but is available year round for special events (birthdays, school trips, church outings, etc.). My favorite trip was taking the trolley one December when the Christmas ships were out on the river.

The WES Commuter Train stops here on its way to Wilsonville in one direction and Beaverton Transit Center in the other direction with stops in Tigard and at the Hall/ Nimbus WES Station before reaching Beaverton. The WES Commuter Train only runs Monday through Friday and only during commute times. The trains are very comfortable with plush cushioned seats. There is a steward on board. As a new business owner, I have utilized this station a few times and don't regret it at all. I work in Lake Oswego&Clackamas and once I get to the train station by car and step on the the waiting area a WES train or TriMet Bus arrives right on time, possibly in a matter of 20 seconds give or take. It's the perfect solution to being congested on a freeway full of brake lights. Parking can fill up fast but I'm not too concerned because there's plenty of other spaces nearby that are open for use. My friends and I both stay in the Tualatin area and this is our way to go. 90% of the time it's pretty quiet here with the exception of a train horn or bus engine. It's also really safe here. I've came to this station multiple times and a TriMet cop is already nearby. I can't get anything better than this in California. The station feels like home because most people that wait with me are regulars. This is why I not only like Tualatin but the station as well.
